  • My Cane Corso puppy training is going very well, I've been very open about the frustrations that a puppy brings but it doesn't change the fact she's doing brilliantly and in today's video I go through some of the amazing progress we've made as well as discussing some very important training principles that you must understand.

Im a husky owner and ive had him since he was a pup. What i found thats interesting with northern breeds is that they are more cooperative than obedient. I found treating him with a pack mentality worked so well. Of course being stubborn resulted in more physical correction. Which by that i mean make him sit and put him on his back the way his mom does when she is staying with us. He's now 5 and though he tells me every reason he should not do this command, he does the command. Positive only didnt work what so ever. However once the point was made im pack leader and mean business rarely do i have to do any kind of reinforcement. I give him 3 chances to obey with my voice getting more serious each time before i do anything physical. I trained him by alot of positive reinforcement with only a small percentage of physical. Once you find their motivating factors(food, toys, etc) you're gold. Even my pitty who was very dog aggressive(rescued from a fighting ring at 10wks) was trained the same way. She was not as stubborn as my husky. All i had to do was find some cheese and she was off. It got to the point where all i had to do is use hand signals and she did that command associated with that hand signal. Her training was very different than my husky mainly due to having to go through behavior modification. But like i said once i found her motivator (cheese) training was easy. She would have been put down had my friend not pulled her from the shelter due to the aggression she displayed. One of the many reasons i foster and retrain bully breeds. They most misunderstood yet incredibly sweet and trainable. Wish more people would take the time to research them.

I don't have a big dog. I have a mini Aussiedoodle that I've been training since I brought her home when she was 9 weeks old. She will be 9 months old in 2 days. I just wanted to thank you for something you talked about in this video. I have been training my dog from the day I brought her home and I train her daily. I am disabled and my goal is for her to be able to go everywhere with me and to be classified as my service dog. Here in the US, you can train your own service dog and given that the waiting lists to get service dogs are super long and the cost to get them or to pay someone to train a dog is simply out of my budget, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I have used several different dog trainers I have found on TH-cam for different purposes, including you, so when you brought up this subject in this video, it reaffirmed what I have been doing. I would love to go beyond simply training my own dog and become a trainer to help others with disabilities train their dogs as well. I cannot afford your professional dog classes but I'm going to see if I can go through our local vocational rehabilitation program to see if they will assist me to take them so that I can use the skills to help others. I love working with dogs. I really do believe that having a well trained dog gives them a better life.

I have a rescue dog that was kept in a crate 90% of his first 4 years, because his previous owners were not as smart as he is. Poor boy. Zero socializing, training, or the basic things they would learn in a natural family, such as what smells are. I feel so bad for him. He's had a couple years to adjust to normal life and basic training, and he's an absolutely brilliant dog and eager to please. He's really too smart to be owned by dumb people, and I'm so glad he's not with them any more!
If you don't have time or ability to give your puppies not just love, but training, please don't get a puppy! I love that you give that message, too!

Thank you so much for your content! I got a GSD 11 years ago and went to the “treat” school for his first year or so. It was not until I went to protection training, that the trainer explained to me how to really talk to my guy/The lightbulb went off for Zamp and me :-) he did not want food, he wanted my praise and excitement for good behavior and wanted my calm correction for poor behaviors. Thanks again 😀

I'm glad to hear that, that you don't rely upon one training style. Positive training is great, in theory, but that doesn't work for every dog. I have been trying to find a trainer who is going to use different types of training styles. Some training only uses clickers, some only use collars. I'm really having a hard time finding a trainer who is skilled in all areas of training styles. I really love Robert Cabral, he talks about all styles of training and you need to be open to that, every dog is different.

I totally agree with what you say I'm a dog older women trainer have shown & breed the odd time for myself when I want for temperament structure show and good alround stable personalitys for kids and family's are my main thing.im wanting in my puppy's/dogs .I've always used differnt styles of training depending on the pup / dogs breed temperament etc as what's good for one may certainly not work with all so we have to adapt & be ready a train certain dogs the way that works best for them and us at that time but the main thing is that we are the leader over them no matter what and never let them.get the upper hand over us or they think they the boss & can try & dominate that's where problems arise if allowed and of course the older they get the worse things can because ..Thanks Will your videos are very helpful and informing for people that are just starting out of need extra advice ..but we all.have our own ways when having had dogs for a life time but like anything theres always something new to learn as we never stop learning & can to.take away what advice we choose from another dog person that have been around & have seen and known dogs & tunned into them so.much longer & forsure
can learn something new that may help with your own pup/dog when needed yours in the dogs ✌❤🙂

I have a 35lb and 65lb dog, i taught them "nice to meet you" which is shake. But then i got a dog that turned out to be 100lb. I taught him "nose" which is a target training because i don't want him to think that a hand down towards him is a signal to paw at people. I never thought about safety of others until i got a larger dog. I've put so much more work into my big guy and really fell in love with training.

I got my cane corso when she was the same age you got yours. She just turned 3 and is 135 lbs . When I got her I figured she would be an average 90 lb adult. She gained 22 lbs in the first month. I have had and lived with many different dog breeds over the years. And I definitely agree more now after getting this dog than ever. That consequences are important almost as important as positive reinforcement .

So great to hear another great trainer say to always have a line on her. I have had two trainers tell me that whenever she is out of her crate she must have on a leash so that I can correct her immediately. The amazing Robert Cabral and the owner of Sirius K9 Academy, Caroline Haldeman. If she can't be with me she must be in her crate. I ruined all the German commands because I did not understand this and I yelled the command over and over. Kinda like my kids and horses...first time obedience. So now, because I also speak Spanish, I use all Spanish words for all formal commands. Ha! So now I have a tri-lingual dog!! My friends don't get it and think I'm mean and all I can say to them is thanks for your concern...my dog is very happy.

Looking for our 2nd Bullmastiff pup now after losing our first just over 2 years ago. I enjoyed training him, and he responded brilliantly to positive only training. However, watching your techniques has shown me how much easier certain behaviours could've been to train by including corrections at the right time. Massively enjoying learning from you.

You explain everything you're doing so we'll with Mabel even though I can see she can test your patience no end...lol! Tom Davis, Robert Cabral, Stonnie Dennis, McCann dogs, Zac George and yourself are all up there with the best as far as I'm concerned. My breeder texted me today to tell me that her next litter will be ready on 5 February so you cannot imagine how excited I am about that. I have done so much valuable research that I hope I can put everything I've learned into practice. Enjoy Christmas and birthdays with your family. All the best and keep doing what you're doing - you do an excellent job.

She learned the simple commands early and did very well. But as she grew up she began to challenge me more and did not respond to rewards at all. Then I got a training collar . The beep was enough, after the first time using it . She preferred the reward more than the beep . And now responds appropriately whitch has made more complicated training much easier.

@Sean Smith.Hey man , I am Canadian too... can you help me-
I am a first time dog owner. I want a watchdog but I will socialize it so that it knows the difference between friends and foes. I will train the dog and I am pretty good at training as I’ve tried training a bulldog ( Scotsman) before and a golden retriever. I want a large dog who is not much expensive. I do not like blowout shedding breeds and I am okay with drooling. I do not want a dog Bree with curly hair because then I would have to take it to professional groomer. And it costs a lot in Canada. Also, I need a cold tolerable dog and I have a bit more than semi active life as I can give the dog 1-2 hour exercise and 30-45 minutes of training. The dog will have to be kept alone for 4-5 hours, however.
Is a Cane Corso right for me? Please help.

My dogo argemtino puppy is not supposed to get outside due to vaccines but after the second one we are slowly started to walk around the neighborhood. Today we got the third one and the microchip. What are your thoughts on the ear cropping? I’ve read that this is mainly done for medical reasons and to help eliminate ear problems when they’re grown. I read that the long flappy ears help to retain moisture in the ears causing problems and infections? I’d like to know your thoughts on this.

Have you an opinion on Joel Beckman? I like the way that he puts emphasis on the attitude that you should adopt when you are dealing with your dogs especially for those who do not naturally have the leading energy. He doesn't use a lot of tools it is just down to the core dog behavior and using all four quadrants, although he doesn't put it into context like that it is down to the basic knowledge that anyone can understand.

Couldn't agree more about verbal corrections! There are too many snowflakes that don't like being told no these days! Its not bad to tell a dog that thats not the behaviour you want! Then reward when they choose to make the right decisions! Well said!

I have a bichon shitzu was very hard to train so independent. Positive training didn’t work but a small smack worked well to get her to pay attention and later I started using cheese which she’ll do anything for!! Now I’m getting a lowchen my other dog has a heart condition and won’t walk anymore! I’m going to train my new puppy with your methods

Great video, day one these are the rules. I am fortunate that my next dogs will have the space to be what comes naturally to them.
Brilliant about dog on the sofa, jumping up and unacceptable behaviour. I agree with you absolutely not allowed. Shame people get an animal based on looks can we nurture nature?. Hundreds and thousands of years breeding trait's then send to dogs gone because the massive guard dog is a bit bitey.

It is the little things that interest me ..IE at 18.25... you explained the wait etc , but when you motioned to the crate with the food having just been placed , Pup was great , but as you motioned to the crate AND Stepped back ,the Pup nearly lost the stay, you corrected but even so that is a natural indication that Stepping Back is an Indication of relinquishment....if that is even a word ,! Do you get where I am coming from and your thoughts please... liked n Subbed great channel.

Just had to tell you because I love your program I just found it and I have aCane Corso and you were spelled B-R-E-A-K. started laughing because they know how to spell lol probably think I’m a nut but I can spell BOnE and he knows what I’m saying. You got a good free because they are very intelligent and I’m in Florida my husbands in Virginia for the last year or so and Drago Has protected me more than once and he loves to go out and go around the fence and do a perimeter check. And his nose is greater than my Rottweiler or Newfoundland. Love your show keep up the good work.

Question Will, I just recently got a Caucasian Shepherd puppy. In your experience with dogs , are herding breeds such as the one I have different from mastiffs in terms of their behaviors or are they pretty similar. Because in my research of the CS they’re very protective over the family but it seems he’s VERYYY protective over me and right now he’s still a lil furball. For example my friend came over the house the other day and he didn’t bark once he got in the house but he went to shake my hand and he started trying to move in between us and was death staring at my friend. I was wondering if when you first received Mabel did she do this when you first had guests over ?

I'm 16 now, i have a one year old purebread Old English Sheepdog and and a mix breed old english who is about 5yo.I have had a few other dogs in the past also.I live in the country side with a very big garden.I keep chickens aswell and socialising dogs with chickens has been very easy with all of my dogs so far.I am hoping to get my own dog between this summer and next summer, (all the other dogs have been and are family dogs)I want to get an english staffie and im ready to keep this dog for its whole life and im not the type of person to get a status dog.I will train this dog independantly and have been practicing on my dogs recently.I was wondering if you had any tips or things that you dont think will work out with this.

Discipline, I am 50 when I was a child the local Bobby " elvis" on his pedal bike. More times than I like to say pulled by the ear ( running, he was on his bike ) to be presented to my parents. Big red ear and a 🤔 disciplinary action, from the doorstep down hall up stairs. A child kicked my wing mirror off not just mine and it is a group of children. Apparently they all have some problem so it is not thier fault and allows the parents to rant, scream and become super aggressive towards any victim of the bad behaviour of thier child. I can't even make this up last week a dog a Japanese Ankita that roam free in my street. Went for a two year old child in the front garden. Dog jumped the fence FYI. I still don't believe it blazing row, the grandmother said she would stab the dog if it came near again, the owner defence was they have kids so the dog won't attack kids. The parent " I wouldn't get a dog put down for any reason". I think I have a pretty good idea when a dog is going to attack, I jumped the fence and booted that dog in the face just in time, two seconds later that child would have been disfigured for life or dead.

    • @willathertoncaninetraining

Great question, she wouldn’t make as good personal protection or attack dog as other Corsos who are more confident and outgoing but she will 100% be enough of a deterrent and natural last line of defence should the worst case scenario happen

I have a 5 month old cane corso, he loves to bite smaller things but once i brought a sleeve he only bites the loose parts like the tip and just by the elbow. I tried to use the "skin" thing you pull over only and also the arm itself. But he wont bite in the middle. What do I do? I want him to be able to grab an arm not only a toy..

Our Doberman recently passed away at 5 years old and I am looking into getting a Bullmastiff. I have found a 1year old Bullmastiff that a breeder is trying to re-home. 1- Do you think this is a good idea rather than getting a puppy? 2- Should I go through your boot camp program with her just to get us on the same page or what would you recommend?

    • @willathertoncaninetraining
      @willathertoncaninetraining  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sorry to hear about your doberman! It's great your re-homing, it's totally dependant on the person on if a puppy or rehoming is better. Both will need a lot of time and training, it might be a good idea to look at our Bootcamp course as it will help establish a good relationship from day one and help them learn to trust you. Hope all goes well with final bits of prep!

My 5 month old gsd puppy is nearly 5 stone and a large puppy. For no reason hes started pulling like a pit pony, wont sit anymore and all he knows he disregards. He walks great when noones around but as soon as someone shows an interest in him he goes crazy. We had all this down to a tee and now hes decided not to do it all. When u say make him sit if hes not responded to an ask or a tell even with a treat, how do u make him sit?

Hello I'm in need of some help training my cane corso puppy. He is 5 months old and I have had him about 2 months and I am struggling with him being timid of everything. He does ok 1 day and the next he has a very hard day. Such as potty training, he let's me know he has to go but as soon as I get his leash he begins to run scared peeing as he goes as if he is writing his name. I use treats when he finishes his business, what's left of it, once we come back in and he knows this so immediately goes to the kitchen when we come back in. I am also struggling with his running and forcefully hiding whether under my table or in the bathtub whenever I get up and move around the house. He has been this way since I got him from a kennel breeder he is even timid to eat or come when I call but when I take him outside he is overly friendly to anybody. Please help my husband is fed up and wants me to get him another home but I believe he can be the guard dog and loving pet we were looking for.
