Food processor is a useful tool for pie dough, pasta dough, pesto, romesco, falafel, and pretty much anything you want minced or pureed that is not too liquid. For really liquid things, it’s best to use a blender.

I cannot remember how many years (over 15) I have had this very same Cuisinart 14 cup processor. This machine is a never-fail, solid kitchen appliance. I have purchased every accessory blade available for it and I keep a spare work bowl and chopping blade in the cupboard for "just-in-case" anything happens. This food processor was one of the best purchases I have ever made for my kitchen.

So true, these things are freaking tanks. I was gifted the 11-cup size of this model when I got married 10 years ago (white base), and the only reason I got rid of it a couple years ago is because I wanted something larger. But I also grew up with one of those white base ones as a kid (born in '88), and it always worked flawless. My mother still has it and it runs like new, and I'm pretty sure she has had that same one since she first got married, too!

I also have had mine for over 15 years but I’ve had to replace the bowl twice because the plastic near the lock keeps breaking off. That’s over 50.00 each order. Now I have to hold down the lid with one hand in order to keep it working. So inconvenient!

I love this food processor! th-cam.com/users/postUgkxuxrxet7NpWgQWK7mCww2lBlrKBcUIrtv I was really hesitant when I placed the order, because it is cheap as compared to the higher end ones. I debated on getting a higher end one, but decided not to, because this one had great reviews and honestly, I didn't know how often I was going to use a food processor. Little did I know that I was going to use it pretty often and it is amazing. I don't use it every day, but at least a few times a month, and so far, it works! And grinds up things pretty fine. The one con would be the slicing and shredding blade - I don't really use it, because I don't think the veggies come out that pretty. A higher end food processor would probably do a better job, (but I really don't know). Anyway, I mostly use the S blade to grind and finely chop food and so far, it meets my needs and I'm very satisfied! Especially for the price that I paid for it!UPDATE! I have had this processor for over a year now, and I still use it constantly and it works perfectly. Such a great purchase!

I don't remember where I got this tip from (I don't think I can claim it as my own genius) but anytime I use the food processor, I take a square of plastic wrap or parchment and put it directly over the bowl before securing the lid. It keeps all of the lid pieces clean and you can still stream in liquid if you poke a hole in it. Only downside is waste, but you can reuse a parchment one multiple times, and I'll often just use the plastic wrap I had to use for covering a mixing bowl. Haven't had to wash my lid pieces in a long time!

I may have to start doing this. Sometimes it is so damn annoying to have to clean the lid just because of a little bit of splatter that got on it. For larger jobs with constant lid removal and reattachment, I might just suck it up, but for a smaller tasks where I just need to blitz something up really quick, I'm stealing this idea. It'll make me more prone to reach for the right tool for the job, and I'll wince less now when I reach for the food processor, because cleanup will just be that much easier.

Cry once. Buy the 14 cup Cuisinart and get it over with. When comparing the cost of the smaller food processors the price difference was about $40 to $50 more and the accessories are easier to find for the most popular size (14 cup). And America's Test Kitchen gave it their seal of approval. In my opinion, you won't regret buy the 14 cup Cuisinart food processor.

    A few tips and hacks:
An easy way to clean systems with lots of irregular nooks and crannies is right after use add some water and dish soap to the mixer and turn it on. The soap will seek out whatever areas it can reach and will allow the following rinse to get everything clean. I use this on my Bullet blender and it makes cleanup a snap. Tip #2 if you have hollow cavities that are causing a problem, consider filling them with a clear food safe resin. It will make the handle a bit heavier but no more problem.

    • @lawrencekellie

Bought the same processor in 2002. Have had it ever since and it's rock solid. Reason? It's not all that different from the one my mom bought in the 80's! We don't fuss with the feed tube safety and don't have anything weird growing in it.
Helen's comment is spot on too. There's no one company that's good at EVERYTHING. None. Anyone that has a full line has a star product, some good products and some below average products. Don't be brand loyal, seek out the best in category (at your price point) for that particular item. There's no shame in having mixed brands in your kitchen!

I doubt you will read this but here goes- Always love your videos Helen. Great info and recipes.
Since I have been in the food biz for over 30 years I have owned many food processors in different sizes. Like you said, some are good, some are not.
The one you chose is also my favorite and after shopping around at a local kitchen store I was able to purchase for $189. But you have to search around. Sometimes they are not the color you want for that price.
Also I must mention that one of the best extra items I have ever bought is the flat lid. Or it used to be called a baking lid. It's only used with the steel chopping blade. It does not have all of the extra pushers and is simple to operate. No clicking of different sections together. Just slap it on, and turn it and it works. It cannot be used with any of the shredding type blades because they are too high. But I end up using it 90% of the time.
I am not sure if Cuisinart still sells them but they are available on line by other companies. Take a look. Thanks Helen xo

This is incredibly useful info. I didn't know they make flat lids. I just googled for them. They look great, but it looks like many people with the new processors couldn't get them to fit. I'll try to call cuisinart to see if they have an update that fits newer models. Thank you :)

    • @dirtyketchup

Here's the thing about that. When I was first gifted the 11-cup model and it came with a flat lid, I thought it was amazing and I used it all the time and I was really bummed when my 14-cup model didn't come with one. But now that time has moved on, I actually wouldn't buy the flat one even if I could. For one, it's just one more thing to store, and I have learned that consolidating is more and more valuable these days. But also, now that I have found a way to modify the "feeder" lid so that it can run without the feeder tubes/pushers, it's kind of a moot point (yes, it's a little dangerous, but I have no kids). I would much rather have one part that can do all tasks than have to store slightly different alternative parts that only marginally excel at different tasks. Superfluity is something to be avoided in the kitchen.

Thanks for the recommendation! I have a KitchenAid pro series food processor that I bought in 2006. The handle is similar to your old processor, but I always tossed everything in the dish washer and let it deal with the crevices and nothing bad ever grew in my handle; however, either it's the nature of the clear plastic or the heat from the dish washer, but parts of the mechanism inside the handle broke and parts of the bowl itself is cracking. The worst part is they discontinued the model/line and no longer make the bowl. A perfectly fine and robust motor will soon have nothing to connect to :( You are right about there is no one brand that's a go to for kitchen tools. Back in 2006, I bought the Kitchenaid pro stand mixer, food processor, and blender. The blender was terrible, but since I didn't use it that much, it was fine. When I started making kale shakes, that's when I decided to see what all of the Vitamix hoopla was all about. Yeah, the Vitamix has been going strong since 2014 (requiring two free shipping label services to replace the brushes within the 7 year warranty period) and I use it daily.

    Great informative video!
When my old (1970’s model bought at estate sale for $10 in 90’s) Sears FP finally broke last year, I couldn’t wait to finally get my hands on a cuisinart. The same 14 cup in this video because it was recommended over and over everywhere. I got mine, a gold one, from Bloomingdale’s for $129 I think it was. I ALMOST hate it. While I admit yes, it is heavy duty/well made, It’s way too big unless cooking for a crowd and way too heavy. Also, lining up the bowl and lid correctly and in order with its overdone safety features, its so aggravating I barely use it. Hard to clean as well, I do not put any FP parts in dishwasher.
So I went on eBay found my old processor thankfully and bought it, still in the box! Not only that, I bought a second one for a back up 😁 you just pull it out, attach bowl and lid in quick fashion and it washes up so easily, no crazy handle with parts and springs that possibly get food inside, it doesn’t weigh a ton either. Maybe it’s just what I prefer after using one so long idk.
I still have the cuisinart for huge jobs around the holidays and such. Cause the Sears is only a 7 cup, but I find that size works 95 percent of the time.

Yes, I have the 14 cup Cuisinart, but the downsides of cleaning and scraping and uneven chopping have made relegate it to only BIG production tasks, like once or twice a year, Often, the attachments to my Kitchenaid stand mixer are more appropriate and easier to clean. I have even gone back to a box grater for a lot of shredding/grating tasks because in the end it takes less time and effort than using a food processor.

The 11 cup original can be found on sale most of the time between $110 to $140. Resist the 8 Cup! A basic mini chopper $20-40 handles small tasks. The bottom of the safety interlock will eventually trap gunk that can't be cleaned. However, it doesn't come in contact with food. If you burn out the motor (Overworking heavy dough or processing dried fruit). You can pick up pre loved replacements for less than $30.00 from that E auction site. sometimes new replacement bowls as well. Top tip when making dough or cake add liquids as the machine is running otherwise it can escape the bowl due to the syphon effect. In my next life will consider a Robot coup!

The model I own is a Cuisinart 14-Cup Elite Collection 2.0 FP-14N. The only retailer that sold it near where I live in NW Indiana was Macy's in both Calumet City, IL & Merrillville, IN. Few reasons why I chose it: 1.) It has the huge 14 cup bowl & a smaller 4.5 cup bowl that inserts inside the 14 cup bowl AND ALL MATERIALS THAT COME IN CONTACT WITH FOOD IN THIS MODEL ARE BPA-FREE. The fit for them both is snug so food stays in the mini bowl when in use and it processes just as well as the bigger bowl. 2.) It comes with a dedicated storage box that holds all outer accessories from both big/mini bowl blades, dough blade for kneading, and the additional slicing blades it also comes with for potatoes chips & other required cuts. NO OTHER BRAND OF PROCESSOR I'VE SEEN EVEN TIL TODAY COMES WITH A STORAGE UNIT FOR ACCESSORIES! The pusher has a drip hole to emulsify with no problem for stuff like homemade mayonnaise, which since has kept me from ever buying store bought mayo when homemade is way easy to make at home & tastes 1000 times better...you may find your homemade mayo works as a dip for snacking as we do. 3.) Its nearly 25 lbs at the base which means it won't vibrate, rattle, or move at all while in use. 4.) If you look again at the model FP-14N...I originally was looking to purchase the FP-14 (without the 'N' in the model name) but after reading deeply at reviews on different sites, I found the model without the 'N' had bad remarks considering it had a rubber seal in the lid (unlike the model featured in this video that has no seal in the lid) & food would get caught inside the seal in a way that made getting trapped pieces out nearly impossible given the seal wasn't removable. A user made a more recent comment about Cuisinart being aware of the food seal issue & ACTUALLY REDESIGNED THE ENTIRE LID SYSTEM WITH A REMOVABLE SEAL THAT IS STRONG AND ROBUST ENOUGH THAT CONSTANTLY REMOVING IT DOES NOTHING TO IT FOR ADDED WEAR & TEAR. I've owned mine for 6 yrs & the seal is good as new after all that usage. No cracks or tears or visible sign of multi year use. So when they included the removable seal, they changed the model name from FP-14 to adding 'N' after 14 or FP-14N. Hope all that information pertaining to '14' or '14N' helps others with making a decision because the only difference between both models was the seal. Besides that, they're both identical. Finally it has a retractable power cord so its never in the way after you're done using it and the retractable mechanism inside still works like day 1. Considering that the 14 cup model featured in this viddy was a $250 price point, for $299 (I paid 6 yrs ago) you get SO MUCH MORE. I would've bought it for $299 for the storage box alone. Considering its 6 yrs later, you may be able to get an even better price depending which retail or auction site you shop for online or which walk-in retailers you shop at physically.
Thank you for taking time to help people with better awareness with not only brands, but your honest take on your own personal experience with previous & new processors. I'm always eager to view your content when it drops or when suggested in the home section of TH-cam (you get alot of suggestions by the way 🙂)

I may have the oldest Cuisinart in the comments. In 1980 I saw a 9 cup one in the back corner of the refurbished section of a department store (May Co., Southern California). It was expensive, but I had just gotten married and got it for myself as a wedding gift.
It's still going full strength, over 40 years later. I expect it will easily see 50 years, probably more.
I use it for everything from shredding carrots and cabbage, to making pizza dough, to grinding Parmesan cheese - then using that cheese in pesto made in the machine. And hummus, and falafel, and ... it's traveled up and down California, across to several East Coast cities, and now lives in the Upper Midwest.

I've had a Cuisinart DLC-7 for about 25 years. Unless changed, I think I would alter your pros/cons as follows:
    1) I've never had a problem with crud collecting in the feed-tube-assembly.
    2) Oh Boy -- wait until you have a lot of liquid in the bowl -- unless your new model has corrected this -- liquid will shoot out between the cup and the lid, and go all over! I've put a towel around it sometimes.
    3) Cuisinart USED TO HAVE all kinds of slicing blades -- I have two racks of them -- about 14 total.
    4) I have one other smaller Cuisinart model which has a Continuous Feed attachment. So your food slices go into the largest bowl you have.
    5) Did you know you can put the metal "S" blade into the upturned feed chute, and it stays upright?
    6) Cuisinart older manuals used to have excellent recipes, in full-color, with them -- I really like the "Vegetarian Chili" recipe!
    7) If you just chop a lot, did you know that Cuisinart has, or used to have, a plain cover without ANY feed chute at all? You have to buy this as an accessory.

Great review, though I would add two things to it. This 14 cup version, while amazing, is one heavy sucker. Just something to keep in mind.
The other, and more important for me, is that this one just FEELS like it's commercial grade. I've tried others and the motors have a loud, high pitch whine, and sound like they're struggling though any type of dough. This one clicks on and there is just a confident, low-pitched hum of a motor that feels built to last. Adding anything difficult and it's just "brrrrt" as things are chopped to bits with no strain and then goes back to a quiet hum. Highly recommended.

I am so happy with this food processor. My mother in law gave me her old one and I had it for 20 years until it broke. (She probably had it since the 70’s because it was yellow mustard color 😆). Then I felt bad buying a new one because I thought the vitamix I bought 2 years ago could do it all. I’ve had a hard time making things like pesto in the vitamix. Helen here is a piece of advice: I have the old 14 cup processor by cuisinart and their newer model, after 2017. The old model is even better, the blade is nearly flush to the bottom bowl and can handle small batches as a result. It is also less engineered, so many of the features are not present making it easier to clean and dry. They look nearly identical, only problem is the old model was such a success they are difficult to find and may be discontinued. If you do find one I would grab it as a gift 🎁. Did I mention you will save $60 atleast:)

If you buy a food processor, there’s only ONE to buy and it’s Cuisinart. Period. End of story. Next. My mom had the very first Cuisinart, purchased sometime in the mid-‘70s and it was the only food processor she ever owned. When I bought mine, of course I went with Cuisinart. With all the safety enhancements it took some period of adjustment, but I quickly adapted. The secret to the Cuisinart is really the massive high torque Hitachi motor. When I bought my first power miter saw, I bought Hitachi. Still working 30 years later. And my DLC-7 Pro Cuisinart is still humming along after 40+ years. You’d have to pry it from my cold dead hands before I’d give it up.
