    Honda's K20C1, better known as the engine powering the venerable Civic Type-R, is a powerful turbocharged 2.0L engine that is now available as a crate engine from ScienceofSpeed.
    Producing in excess of 300 horsepower and 300 lbf/ft of torque, with a package weight that weighs less than the S2000 F series engine, the K20C1 is the ideal replacement for the factory engine for your S2000 race car.
    In this video, we break down the nine categories of components required for installing the K20C1 into your S2000.

    Great job to SCIENCE OF SPEED for creating such a well put together engine replacement option!
    The legendary F20/22c1 used replacement engine is close to extinct. This is a breath of fresh air to s2000 owners!

      @@ScienceofSpeedLLC hi, i am from the mini cooper community. With the aging 1st gen(1.6L with supercharger) and 2nd gen (1.6L with turbocharger), our engines are high mileage and getting hard to source reliable replacement motors. We wonder about the 1.5L in the current civics or the k20 as viable options. Would your company branch off doing hondas and possibly create engine mounts for us to use honda modern engines?

    For me, the heart of the car is the engine. My s2k will forever have a F20c (ap1) engine in it. That's what makes it a S2k for me. But for those who loves Frankenstein, all the power for you and good luck.

    This is awesome Chris. I used to own an AP1 years ago when I lived in Tempe. I now drive a 2018 CTR but really miss my old yellow convertible. It's so great to see your guys' work and passion for the S2K, NSX, and now putting the new Honda heart into the S2K. I hope one day I can get back into one of these beauties or at least see them at the track.

    This is very sick. I have a FK8 and I always loved the S2000. But I have to say. This will be a very very expensive swap. For the F20 and 22 engine are Honda king 4 banger engine. And on boost the s2000 make crazy insane power. I love seeing the hard work of putting a k20c1 in a s2k. But replacing a s2k engine when its already a amazing set up from stock. The k20c1 is amazing motor but so it the s2k fseries.

      Air conditioning is not currently supported. We do recognize the need for AC even on race cars (for example, the NSX GT3 EVO race car is currently available to teams that run the cars in hot humid climates). That being said, there are two factors. 1) packaging 2) ECU control. Packaging will be challenging, as the steering rack and other accessories interfere with the factory K20C1 compressor (which uses a different refrigerant any way). 2) The HPD ECU does not support AC. It's possible with MoTeC, and another solution we are exploring. These issues are something we are exploring, but do not have a time table, or guarantee, that it will be offered in the future.

      But don't you think if you develop a similar kit for the K20c that comes in the Accords and Acuras RDX for swap them
      Into street going S2000 AND The triples
      FRS/BRZ/GT86/GR86
      Could bring even more profit???
      Especially if that swap kit comes to mating to a CD009 transmission in said plaftforms??
      Ppl are screaming in the streets for a setup just like that
      And since you guys got all that knowledge into conversion already
      Is a mayor,mayor,mayor,mayor deal

    If you have an S2k already you're looking at 7-10K for this kit plus the price of the engine, which they pretty much don't exist on the used market at this point. HPD crate engine is another 7k. So that's 14k minimum on top of the price of the car if you are gonna do the work yourself. If not I'd say another 2-3k at minimum. So in reality you're looking at 20k to get this done unless you have a number of special circumstances. Now if you didn't already an s2k they don't come cheap these days. A decent shape one will set you back mid 20's at best, maybe even 30. So just to be clear if you thought of this is as as ground up project you need about $45k minimum. That's the price of a used Civic Type R, you know a car that was made just a few years ago and is loaded with tons of nice modern features..... Don't get me wrong I love my s2k, but this seems like a silly option to me. It's for rich people that exist in a tiny niche market. The f-series that comes in an s2k is an amazing engine even by today's standards. If you find yourself with a s2k w/ a blown engine, you could swap a normal k20-k24 in the car for a fraction of the price and there's already a huge community that supports that swap. You could even toss in your choice of forced induction and never come close to this type of crazy money. At the end of the day this kit is for someone that wants to say "yeah I got an s2k with the type r swap".

    I wonder did you do before/after runs on track to compare the timing difference between the F20C and K20C1?

    • @ScienceofSpeedLLC
      @ScienceofSpeedLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We have not done timed comparisons, however, have compared an S2000, Civic Type R, and now this K20C1 powered S2000 (S2000R) at the same track (our home test track, The Podium Club). Impressions are 1) the amount of torque generated from the K20C1 transforms the S2000. Main straight top speed is about 20 MPH higher for example. 2) The lower weight of the S2000 (of 300 lbs) makes a significant difference in braking, cornering, and of course improves acceleration performance. 3) the cooling efficiency is dramatically improved over the Civic Type R - which is limited by packaging (stacked intercooler, condenser, radiator and proximity of downpipe to radiator), especially compared to the v-mounted S2000. Driving in 90 deg F ambient weather, we're seeing a coolant temperature range (directly from the cylinder head) of 180-190 deg F. Hope to share more of these impressions in a future video.

    I'm interested. How does this effect the 50:50 weight balance? when I had the super charger I didn't like the front weight increase, it created understeer during corner entry. Then the heat soak for street use was bad so I removed it. If I could test drive this it would help me decide.

    Whats the rev limit? Whats the final drive u use? Stock 4.1? Would a 4.4 be too short for this engine?

      Oh definitely. My car currently has 4.77s, but I'll be swapping to a 3.90 when I do the K20C swap later this year.

    Does any of this kit work with any other motor besides the one from the type r?

    • @ScienceofSpeedLLC
      @ScienceofSpeedLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question. The engine that is most comparable is the K20C4 (2.0L turbocharged engine from Accord). This engine uses a very similar block with a different turbocharger, sensors, and ECU (Keihin instead of Bosch components used on the K20C1). Physically, it should fit the same, and we believe that the engine mounts, coolant manifold, intake manifold, transmission mating, and flywheel mating would be the same. The different sensors will create some work for engine control and engine lay over harness compatibility. We hope to verify all this in the near future. This engine is compelling because they are reasonably inexpensive.

      This is what i mean in the other comment
      That one can be register into a street going car(maybe not in cali,sorry guys)
      But the street going S2000s and the Toyota/Subaru triplets definitely can benefit from that swap

    How does this conversion compare to a similar stock s2k w turbo kit. Cost to whp/ft lbs tq

    • @ScienceofSpeedLLC
      @ScienceofSpeedLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good comparison would be the ScienceofSpeed TS-MAX kit. Depending on the year, and configuration, in general it's about $10,000 for a turbocharger system, fuel system, and engine management. A built engine generally runs about $7,000-9,000.

    Hey Chris, we spoke a bit at Honda meet (had the camera, Angel hat, FK8 It black shirt). Something to mention on the website or upcoming video interview is including in the package a OTS differential with that being a weak point of the S2ks.

    • @ScienceofSpeedLLC

      We've actually had good success with the factory differential with turbocharged S2000s when properly cared for (primarily, reduce shock from things like burn outs). The J's distance rigid collar is a good option to consider when rebuilding the rear end to keep the pinion stable relative to the ring ring, regardless of what engine is in the front of the car.

    What's the MPG on the standard tune? Dumb question, I know.

      Sorry, this isn't something we have tested. We'd expect it to be similar to Civic Type R.

    Looks amazing but would a supercharger kit do the same job?

    • @ScienceofSpeedLLC
      @ScienceofSpeedLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A supercharger or turbocharger system on top of the F series engine is always a great option (ScienceofSpeed offers both) . This conversion is intended for a customer needing an engine rebuild (worn out S2000 engines are a definite thing as the cars progress in age) and wanting a forced induction system which meets or exceeds the torque delivery possible with forced induction systems being used on the F series. For example, an engine rebuild is ($7,000-8,000+) and requires an engine that is still serviceable. A forced induction system with engine management is ($6,500-8,000+). This puts you at $13,500-16,000+, plus the cost of tuning. This is comparable to the K20C1 conversion, which provides a new engine designed for forced induction from its inception with factory reliability. This option becomes even more compelling when you consider the resale value of the F series engine being removed. At the end of the day, there will continue to be a place for both bolt-on forced induction for the F series, and this new replacement option. Thank you for the great question!

      @@ScienceofSpeedLLC $18k would put the f20/22 in the sleeved, built long block with turbo kit, and supporting modifications category, good for 600+whp. I think the k20c swap is a good option, but for someone looking to just make reliable power, it’s not the most cost effective nor the easiest.

    Does the kit work with right hand drive vehicles?

      @ScienceofSpeedLLC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have not been able to verify RHD fitment, so we are listing this as for LHD for now. If a RHD vehicle becomes available for test fit, we will update this information then. More details are available on the FAQ page: www.scienceofspeed.com/blog/faq-scienceofspeed-k20c1-civic-type-r-engine-conversion-for-2000-09-s2000/
