The Sky May Be was made for Doom 1/ The Ultimate Doom. The missing textures will ONLY appear if you're playing with Doom 2/Final Doom.
Really? In the past I've had quite a few mods fail to start with Ultimate Doom so I've become accustomed to just playing everything in Doom 2. Thanks for bringing that up.

I played that wad in my living room and goatse popped up and I immediately went to the room where that specific boss was to avoid my parents seeing it.
I said in the video that the new Doom's multiplayer was dead, but then the "Ultimate Doom" patch came out after this video was released. The multiplayer is much more lively now. Unfortunately without annotations I cannot add this info to the video.

As soon as you said UAC Labs I knew what it was leading up to. It's just weird playing it when you know who made it, and it makes it kinda eery.
I know that feeling. That's why I deliberately avoided mentioning the creator until after I explained the level. I wanted to emphasize that, taken on its own, the two levels aren't really notable. But when I was playing them I did feel a little uneasy, like I was stepping into a madman's bedroom. Even if he isn't there, knowing the room is his is bad enough.

Imp Encounter was originally a (very short) "fanfic" in the DW forums, the wad was made afterwards. "That" sprite was a meme in the Doom community for many years afterwards.
The Casali brothers are brilliant. I remember flying through their levels for hours in total awe.
I really hope that, when Doom Eternal comes out, the game starts as we've seen... and then the late title card appears... and is then wiped away and replaced with "MORDETH: EPISODE 2". I mean, at this point, that's about the only way it *could* come out without being a disappointment. Either that or have it be a spiritual successor to wow.wad.

It's almost funny how TNT Evilution was one of the first instances of paid mods as a concept and to this day that same concept is still recieved exactly the same way, and ironically enough, now perpetuated by the company that now owns DOOM.

As someone active on the Doomworld forums back in the day, I quite liked the Doomworld Forums series. The disturbing imagery, iirc, was Goatse. Didn't know it was the same "Anonymous" as Imp Encounter, lol. I imagine the Doomworld Forums wads would be... kinda lost on people who weren't there though. It's in-jokes. In-jokes all the way. But I still fondly remember them. Especially the third one, where you go to New Doom - which is a pretentious Roman Forum. Literally.

I am SO SO SO PISSED!!!! that I created doomWADs in 1993 at 18yrs old While in Navy Officer Candidate school ....but...... I deleted them ALL when I bought a new computer in 1995. I made levels, huge ass maps, and rendered new 8-direction pixelated versions of all monsters in the form of MORTAL KOMBAT characters. I replaced enemies with Raiden (Imp sprite), Johnny Cage (Pinky sprite), Scorpion (Baron of Hell). The other demons I left as is. DAMMMIT IF I DIDN'T SAVE THAT SHIT! I had NO CLUE there was a world of DoomWAD creators. Shit! I'd be famous!!!!!! Dammit!!!!!!!!!! PISSSEDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't believe you. The first known wad was made in march of 1994. Doom was literally out for 20 days in 1993.

As someone who's getting into Doom hardcore for the first time, I loved this video. Makes me wish I could have lived out the 90's a bit differently.
I think in a way you're lucky to be getting into it now, Doom is as accesible and easy to run as ever. You have 20+ years of work to discover and creating your own maps is easy as cake.
I'm also just getting into it now and these history videos are really interesting.

The Story Behind The Imp Encounter Wad:
As many have noted, the Encounter story is written in such a manner that the absurd nature of the subject matter takes a back seat, in many ways, to the author's commentary on the degradation of mental capacity that occurs to soldiers exposed to prolonged periods of combat and warfare, such as veterans of Vietnam. At the outset of the tale, the Marine is engaged in desperate battle against overwhelming odds, and must resort to his chainsaw in order to defeat the first wave of enemies. The parallels between the Marine's use of the chainsaw - "in, and out ... in, and out, and the dead cacodemons piled up around him" - and the physical act of love, and indeed between the chainsaw and the phallus could not be more explicit. The tale further affirms the mythic connection between orgasm and death at its literal climax, wherein the Marine's joy at achieving sexual fulfillment is quickly overwhelmed with disgust, self-hate, and a desire to destroy the object that perverted his desire, murdering the Imp and trying to convince himself it was just a momentary lapse in judgement.
Many of the WADS in that list are nothing compared to some of the ones we have today. Shit like Moom Man, HDoom, Grezzo 2 and /pol/

Actually Imp Encounter or Impcest is a literally telling in engine of a really intense bit of doom fanfiction. You should seek it out. It isn't just some basic pin porn schlock it's actually a pretty good insight into isolation and complex ptsd.

Pretty dumb to answer a two year old comment, but, yeah. Sonic Robo Blast 2 is very well regarded in the Doom community due to how technically impressive the game is. And of course, most Sonic fans agree that SRB2 is sometimes considerably better designed than some 3D Sonic games.
Ugh... Doom 2016 multiplayer was sorely underrated. Should see if I can get my friends together and give it a go sometime.

You can't just run over the demons. That's only possible through source ports. In the original game monsters would block your path no matter how far below you they were.

PrBoom+ can actually smoothly run all 3 nuts wads with 0 issues.
This is so good, I rewatched it twice. So well done; could you please show me how you manage to have the motivation to keep editing a 30 minute video yet have such good video/audio quality? It must tear up your hard drive.
My audio quality is something I'm still working on actually.
The trick is to just find something you already do and then make a video on it. Like all these Doom videos came about because I was just playing Doom and decided to record it and later on I made the video. I'm doing this all the time, just recording stuff in OBS and then working with it later. 1920x1080 60FPS of course.
It does actually tear up hard drives though. I actually have 2TB dedicated to doing this work but honestly like 1TB would be good enough if you just keep the finished product.
UtterSpartan I record in OBS too but I have a very big problem with it: it keeps recording through VLC which I can't change, even by redownloading it. VLC makes the video quality terrible and I need your help please.
I fixed it! Woo! Now time to find a way to make OBS record without it slowing my PC to a crawl.

The thing with NUTS.wad isn't that your computer can't deal with it (though computers would certainly choke back in the day), it's more that you just hit bottlenecks in Doom's engine, because the game just was never intended for this kind of wild and ludicrous shit.
Monsters trying to pathfind towards you will constantly be making visibility checks over linedefs (what makes up the geometry of the levels, walls, ledges, elevators, windows, railings, solid pillars, stair steps, etc), they check if they can move towards you and if they can attack towards you. If there are a LOT of monsters 'awake', they're all going to be making constant checks to try to see if they can reach and attack you, the more monsters, and/or the more linedefs there are between you and them to make checks over, the more it'll add up, and eventually the engine will start to hang up as it can only think so much at once, and as they will keep making checks even though the engine is busy as hell computing everything it's currently 'thinking' about, all regardless of your hardware's strength.
Thus particularly crowded levels can slow down, and particularly detailed levels may as well, even if it isn't actually that densely populated, and this is why the game can potentially slow down at only certain parts of a map, or at certain times.
GzDoom similarly hits engine bottlenecks with NUTS.wad
It's not. Prboom+ has been able to run Nuts perfectly, and this since 2008. gzdoom is not the end all be all to Doom's history

nuts.wad runs really nicely on prboom+. it's laggy on zdoom-based ports and crispydoom has about a 50/50 chance of having all collision break entirely

Also an omen pc struggles to run nuts 3.
You get so little FPS on NUTS because you are running it in GZDoom that processes entities differently.
Run it on PRBoom with no problems.
wow.wad wasn't special, however making a pit with a floor texture and blank walls was adopted as a common technique by map makers to hide monsters, as the untextured walls made the hole invisible. Set a linedef to raise the pit when the player gets close and no need to teleport the monsters in.
It'd be more interesting (to me) to see a compilation of actually well designed and difficult slaughter maps. Slaughterfest, chillax, holy hell, okuplok, sunlust, etc
Is there any way to play the original 1993 game @800x600 or any other resolution larger than 320x200 ?
This is just a thought, but it would be cool if you made a part 2 and that part would be the worst wads of the year cacowards ^^

No UAC Military Nightmare?
The original Terry WAD was UAC Military Nightmare. It came out in 2008. This list was published in 2003. UAC Military Nightmare did win worst WAD at the Cacoawards, but it was released too late for this list.
You have to do this again. With all the newer maps since the creation of this video
