⤈ WHO WE ARE ⤈
We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But now we are back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and have now made our way to Japan. We are starting a Japanese road trip and excited to bring you all along.

One cat can have a dozen owners and a dozen different names. Saw a documentary where the put a tracker on a cat and it had different names in homes all over the place. 😊

@Philly & Keely | Chapter By Chapter bless you Keely, I know, the what ifs,but her being so friendly, she probably was someone's cat, with ye feeding her she wasn't going to go home. Once the food cart was gine( as in ye) she probably ventured home. So many cats in our locality go missing for a while,turns out being fed elsewhere,my friend has had eight cats in her lifetime,all lived to great ages,snd says that they will go where the food supply is,even had to ask a neighbour to stop feeding one,ascot overweight ha ha. I know re colder days harder,ha ha I hear you loud and clear 🤣🤣🤣. Sending love from our very first St.Brigids day bank holiday weekend.

Love that you are able to have a temporary cat and dog outside your van to love on and feed. I know it's hard to leave them when you go but it's for the better the animals, that they don't get so attached to you because then they feel betrayed when you leave after giving them all that attention. Hopefully your kitty friend had a home to go to when you left. Your trip to Mt. Olympus reminded me of your winter in Japan....snow again! Keely, you so love your coffee! How old were you when you started drinking it? I never could acquire a taste for it and it makes my heart rhythm go wacky. Philly I hope you're getting some warmer weather on down the road, I can see you really wanted it in the worst way. Take care, have fun!

Greece is 80% snowcapped mountains, 16.000 km of the most crystal clear coastlines, 32% forest cover, highest biodiversity in Europe, extremely complex geography and topography, 800 natural hotsprings, 15.000 caves, 400 wetlands, and so much more. You have no idea. From snow capped mountains all the way to the only natural palmforests in Europe. And from some of the least degraded virgin forests in all of Europe, to geological paradises, a whole arc of volcano's and everything in between. Greece has so many types of landscapes you can be in almost all of the world in Greece. And I have been there 60+ times to know this. It's a stunning country and if you know about it's secrets it will blow your mind every single time.
Wow you made me want to stay here forever. Now I want to experience it all!! If you had five very diverse recommendations where would they be? I would love to showcase more than just beaches here (but expect alot of them haha)
@@phillyandkeely So. I have a family house in Macedonia province in Halkidiki.
1. What can you do with having a house there to base yourself in this area?
-You can visit Halkidiki itself for incredible beaches and sandy coasts like the Orange beach. First and 2nd finger.
- Not even 15 minutes away you can be at lake Koronia which at the perfect time can be full with tens of thousands of flamingo's.
- You can be in hikers paradise with 1 hour drive to the mount Olympus which you can do multiple days of hiking. The mountain has extremely diverse biodiversity and has 1700 species of plants which is more than some countries as a whole! Unfortunately you covered it only very minorly. Mount Olympus is a very impressive mountain to be hold from driving towards there and also the hike from actually Litochoro to Base area and the upwards to the top is an incredible hike which in itself is 2 days. And there are multi day hikes worth hundreds of kilometers.
- You can be at river delta's like Delta Aksiou or Delta Aliakmona within 30 minutes.
- You can be at wonderful waterfall regions like Edessa within 1 hour of driving
- You can be at the wonderful Pozar natural hotsprings within 1.5h of driving
- You can be at 1 of the 2 most important birding places in all of Europe by going to lake Kerkini, full with hundreds of species of birds among which the Pelicans. Also the Asiatic Waterfuffalo can be found here.
- many wonderful historical sites all around the province can be found like Vergina, Dion, Phillipi, Pella, Olynthos, Amphipolis, etc
- 2 truly Incredible caves like the Aggitis cave and Alistrati cave can be visited just 1 hour and 1.5 hour away from Thessaloniki
- Soon Europe's largest tomb will be open to the public within 1 or 2 years. The Amphipolis tomb is likely dedicated to the mother of Alexander the Great or to his friend Haephestion. The tombs is truly special with incredible architecture and many forms of arts in a combination not seen elsewhere and the circumpherence of the tomb is 500 meters. Truly gigantic
- You can be at Sani resorts for a perfect luxury leasure within 1 hour from Thessaloniki
- You can be at wonderful wine regions and do wine tastings by going to Halkidiki within 40 minutes or going to Naousa within 1 hour from Thessaloniki
- You can be at the only Monastic state in the world: Athos Holy mountain within 2.5 hours of driving. A truly unique world of it's own not found anywhere else on the planet.
Also visiting the Prespes lakes is really wonderful and a unique world. I visited it last February and it was perfect.
Then you have the Rhodope mountains in Greece which is truly one of the lesdt degraded forests in all of Europe.

2. Epirus region
You could partly base yourself in Ioannina or just go on route the whole time.
- Mount Tymfi + Dragonlake on top there.
- The Vikos Gorge. Hike or just see it from some very good view points.
- rivers like Voidomatis, Archeron, Sarantaporos etc
-Kalamas natural bridge but i believe a section collapsed.
- visit and explore Ioannina
- explore Dodoni theater
- The Aoos gorge which stems from the Aoos lake one of the highest lakes in Greece on a altitude of 1400m.
- mount Grammos
-Tzoumerka mountains and the Baros Bass. The twin waterfalls, the theodoriana, and also the Rema Marks. Check them all out
-Louros springs (a blue eye lake)
- Kokkinopilos
- from Dodoni and louros you could make a 1,2 day escape to Lefkada and visit the beaches of Egremni, porto Katsiki and others. Just to escape mountain life and see some outstanding sea scenery.
- zalongo(dance of zalongo, fierce women who defended till their last breath. Did the dance of Zalongo and danced into the abyss 1 by 1 ),
- there at Zalongo also Nikopolis historical site and Cassope historical site on the mountain
- archeron river
- Koronisia water wetlands. And the wider Amvraikos gulf
- Zachorochoria in the Pindus national Park. 46 stone traditional villages
- Pindus mountains. Hundreds of kilometers of mountains
Many many more secrets. Like the many rivers, deltas gorges and so on. Im only just pointing various key things.
There is a incredible Route I did that went to South Pindos Rema Marks, then to winding roads to Acheloos river Valley. A region noone knows about. From there along the Acheloos valley along that river to the Kremasta lake. From Kremasta lake to Karpenisi which lies in varioue mountains like mount Tymfristos, Chelidona etc.
From Karpenisi with lovely villages also in the valley to Proussos(monastery), up over the mountians, along Lake Trochonida to the Corinth gulf shortly touching it and from there go back up again to lake Mornos, passing the mountains of Mount Giona, Mount Vardousia.
From there go out of the mountains and pass the valley with mountains like Parnassos.
That can be a crazy (in a good way) but wonderful and very diverse route.
I did this route specifically actually with a longer section passing Prespes lakes and Mount Tymfi, passing Tzoumerka. Bur you get the point.
And from the end of that route near Parnassos mountain you can choose to base yourself in the nex place: Naflio
But before Nafplio you can also do the island of Evia and then along the mountain+sea coasts of mount Dirfi for some wonderful coastal mountain terrain with dense forests. Although its winter and therefor not all in bloom it is lovely.

3. Base youself at North East Peloponnese. At Nafplio.
- explore Nafplio extensively
- there is a secret sea hike route just behind Nafplio with some wonderful mountain and sea scenery. Especially wonderful also with sunset
- Acrocorinth Castle
- Ancient corinth
- Nemea vineyards
- some special twin Dolins of Didima. Inside a garden of eden + small church
- Methana springs with white blue waters
And volcano there
- Epidaurus theater
- make a 1 day island escape to Hydra or another day to Spetses. Both incredible
- Lake Stymfalia and Lake Feneos in the mountains Interior or Arcadia. Mount Kyllini and mount Aroania and so on
- also wonderful caves at Kastria cave and Mega speleo monastery.
- Boufouskia geology
- Strofilia forest but its further out and more likely to base yourself at another region
- Leonidio perfect for mountain clinbers. But there is a monastery hidden there I believe its called Eleonora
- Monemvasia
- Taygetus mountain and the site of Mystras there.
That is in very short writings what you can do basing yourself around nafplio.
I wrote this generally very very rapidfire
But inbetween all these areas and regions there are many more secrets allll around
I would then still give a indication for other regions to base youself but this alone can be worth many many weeks (months even)

I can also get a range of emotion in a few minutes. I went from laughing to having a little tear 😢 when you had to leave the cat. I can so see myself in Keely’s sadness and pain to leave him there.. But Kevin”e” probably have a good home and loving family. My “rule”, does it have a collar. Yes, it has a home. No, it’s a stray cat and I have to either adopt or find a “refuge” for it.

Philly I think if you see a hardware store you should stop . Buy some Di-Cor scrap off the silicone and replace with self leveling Di-Cor . It's been my experience silicone doesn't do well in the cold weather . So many people with RV's use it on the roofs of their homes .

People, let’s say non-Balkan foreigners, tend to only imagine Greece as the beautiful islands in the summer. Yes, the islands are gorgeous, but the mainland has a lot too offer as well. I’ve driven to Greece 18 times and I absolutely love it, being from Serbia it’s an easy drive down, and my parents installed that love into me from a young age.
And I don’t think it’s ridiculous getting so emotional over a cat, when I’m down there I almost always make a nice connection with a cat and then get sad because I can’t take it with me. I still think about this beautiful kitty, looked like a mix of a Russian blue and tabby cat, that I’ve met in 2018. It was a real scaredy cat, but would cuddle and play with me.
If you have the time, I would recommend you to visit Meteora. There are these breathtaking Orthodox monasteries built on huge rock formations. When there is fog it feels like you’re floating in the sky. It’s truly breathtaking, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s about 240km South from Thessaloniki.
I hope you’ll have fun in Greece, it’s really a beautiful country and the people are very nice. ❤

@@phillyandkeely Don’t worry about the weather, yes, it was August when I went, but it’s was quite cloudy and rainy and it gave it such a surreal charm! Just make sure to wear good footwear because there’s a lot of climbing and the steps can get quite slippery! 🥰

Well done for getting up for sun rise. In the winter you really have to make the most of when it's light! I was going to suggest you went to Mount Olympus! You found the same path I hiked! Definitely too icey though. I walked about 3 hours up that path, to the first base station. It would take a very long time to get to the top of the mountain. You got pretty much the same views from the road so don't feel bad about not making it further. Mainland Greece is not like the postcard Greece, I think most people just go to the islands. It's clearly not a wealthy country but there are some beautiful places to see. Go see Vikos Gorge after Meteora if you can. Oh and most of the toll roads can be avoided to save money, just use then to avoid crazy mountain passes or roads that aren't actually there which caught me out!

@@phillyandkeely Hi. If you want to live the experience of a Greek island affordably by van there are some options. I would suggest Lefkada and you can approach it by car/van , also Euboea (2nd largest Greek island), elafonisos (tiny island in the very south of mainland in Peloponnese)you should take a 10min ferry to get. Poros and salamina are also islands that you can get there in a couple of minutes by ferry and are affordable.

Unless you end up on Island of Crete, keep your winter gear handy. Even, Crete it was cold. Good news, less tourists and more kitty purrs to be have. FYI in Asian cultures, any type of black & white cats, bring good luck 👍. Philly just keep a lucky cat, can only help the maintenance health of the van life. Just saying. I haven't driven at all on this trip, but I did last time.
I can assure you, any seemingly stray cat or dog you see in Greece has not one, but multiple "owners" each, who will miss it and get worried.
Also, they are most probably vaccinated, and even neutered.
Every cat and dog we met was so friendly, you could tell the people in Greece are great animal lovers that they felt safe around everyone. It's not the case in all countries sadly.
Did the kitty come back before you left ?? I have so many questions. Don’t feel bad I wouldn’t have wanted to leave it either 😂

Especially with Keely being accident prone and not totally stable on a concrete sidewalk under normal conditions . I'm so ready for winter to be over . It's really not been a bad one here but I just want to run around naked in the backyard . I'm not going to worry about all these people in my apartment complex . It's going to be a celebration of winter being gone . Probably get a visit from people in blue uniforms and a few in white coats but I'm really ready .
