- In this video, we're exploring Athens in Greece with our van! We're looking at the city from all different perspectives, including from the rooftops of the old town, Acropolis, enjoying sunsets over the city and eating plenty of vegan food.
One thing we realise is we are too old for this city malarky. We end up back in the van with a takeaway after an exhausting day exploring the very beautiful city.

We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But now we are back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and have now made our way to Japan. We are starting a Japanese road trip and excited to bring you all along.

Ah, Athens and my '70's memories of getting rob with no place to stay,. So group of us climbed the wire fence and slept 2 nights in cave opening under the Acropolis. We crept up on top under the moonlight for free , then climbed back down to the the cave hideout. Always left early before sunrise 🌅, avoid being caught. My memories was Athen being a big polluted bad smog air quality city. First chance, got boat passage out to outer islands for work. Ended in Crete for 3 mos. working odd jobs. Finally worked cooking & cleaning in a Norwegian owned beach house and the owner offered me a job back in one of his hotels in Norway. Had earned enough cash to get back to Scandinavia. I loved the beautiful outer islands.🌞💛🌞🐈💛🌞

I'm in the process of watching your video, I will be in Athens in April, Greece is my favourite country, and I want to suggest a few places you would really enjoy. You can drive to Nafplio, Epidivoros, Tolo and all the amazing places along the coast of the peloponnese heading to the Kalamata, all along the coast to Koroni, Methoni, Pylos, Voidokilia beach, in my opinion the most amazing beach in the Mediterranean, move onto Filatra they have a smaller model of the Eifal tower! Then Kyparisia and all along the amazing west peloponnese coast of mainland Greece. Also taking a ferry to Aegina, Poros, Hydra and more!

The west coast of Peloponnese from Patras to Kalamata has numerous pull-offs for van life. Athens to Delphi to Patras is the prettier coast to drive out that direction. Many shops are seasonal so a lot of things are closed so it's super chill. Corinth to Tripoli to Kalamata is really nice through the mountains.

It is amazing how you can communicate such wonder and beauty in less than 20 minutes. It must be a painstaking process to choose what makes the cut. Aside from that, Keely I totally share your amazement of the area. Seeing and hearing stories it's so hard to fathom that modern day is existing smack dab in the middle of ancient ruins. Nice one guys, brought back a lot of memories from my time there. I watched the sunset from that spot too, but not going to lie, I drove up, well done walking, its so steep!! You are so right about the Acropolis, get there for opening time and do out of season, dread to think how busy it gets in summer with all the cruise ship passengers. Return of the blue dress from so many previous videos, thought it had been retired it, but glad to see it back, great for every occasion in the warm or cold!! Drone shots were awesome too.
If the weather stays this beautiful that dress will be a staple lol. Yeah summer would be insanely busy!! I think we got the perfect time of year!!

I have always found when visiting a city that I don't realise just how far I can walk in a day. It's like oooo I must go see that, then ooooo must go see that etc etc. Becomes a very long day with epic amounts of walking. Pounding the concrete is hard going on the hips. I am sure it is a female thing! Loved all the food you ate. Not sure I would have walked anywhere after the wraps, would have needed a nap.

But when you aren't used to walking that much, then gosh how tired you are after.. 😂

We did the same thing, got to the Acropolis right before it opened and then it was so much more less crowded, not many people at all. Loved Athens! Such a great city to ramble around in. I'll have to try vegan ice cream for breakfast next time. Hey, walking around big cities, will wear you out, even young people. You just want to take in so much in a short space of time that you are just going non stop. Take care of those joints Keely, keep them moving but switch to low impact exercise and do some hip joint, hip space opening stretches. I love this youtube channel, Bob & Brad, they are physical therapists and have stretches and movements for anything that ails you. Okay, yes, I'm a bit of a health nut, but do take care of yourselves, you have a lot more traveling to do. Have fun you two!
Defo need to take care of our bodies more, we never warm up for climbing haha, we are too keen. But need to learn to pace ourselves and do stretches etc. Will check out Bob & Brad cuz we genuinely do want to protect our bodies so the work better for longer haha

We just returned from Athens, via Istanbul in our Vivaro, the rest of our Greek visit was in the countryside, not liking cities too much, but Greece was great, lovely weather mid 20s.

@@phillyandkeely you loved Istanbul, it was the craziest place I have been to in terms of drivers, people standing on a 6 lane highway selling bread among erratic lane changing. I have felt safer riding bikes in Hanoi or Bangkok.

Y stuff. On a more serious note, how did you manage to fly your drone in the centre of Athens, specifically the Acropolis? Did you not need special authorisation? Also, since you are so close, come visit our little island of Malta. Cheers.
Thanks Terence 🥰 yeah it's an optical illusion on Acropolis, you can't take it off there because it's restricted, so we took it off in a park where it's allowed and flew it as close as we could before reaching restricted zone, we filmed in 4k so we could zoom in. Quite alot of Athens is actually allowed to fly as long as you don't go above a certain height. Well that's what my drone says anyway. It literally won't take off or fly in zones that are restricted thankfully so I can't get in trouble by accident it won't fly if it's not allowed. Tried to take it off to film some dolphins a couple days ago and turned out it was a restricted zone, so was devastated about that, surprises me sometimes the places that are allowed and aren't.
