Wild Swim Regrets!? (VAN LIFE in Northern Ireland)

  • The hidden gems of Northern Ireland. This week we take a trip down memory lane to explore two of our favourite places in our wee home country, starting off with my favourite wild swimming spot of all.
    Nestled amongst the Mourne mountains are Newcastle & Castlewellan, two spots that have a special place in our hearts. After many years it's time to return and see if they live up to the hype of our childhood memories.
    Bloody Bridge is our first stop, and it certainly doesn't disappoint! This is a must-see video if you're ever planning on traveling to Ireland - Bloody Bridge is truly a hidden gem and one of the best wild swimming spots in Ireland! Not only is the scenery breathtaking, but the swimming is top-notch as well. If you're a fan of wild swimming, then this is a video you won't want to miss!

    ⤈ WHO WE ARE ⤈
    We are Philly and Keely and we live full time in our tiny home on wheels Martha. After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. Then we took our van further than she had ever been before to the very beautiful Turkey. Enroute we stopped off in Spain for a few weeks where we experienced every van lifers worst nightmare, we were robbed and they stole all valuables in our van. But now we are back on our feet, fully MOT’d and back on the road through Europe before we experienced another vanlife nightmare... our van caught fire! After the trauma of that we had a massive change of plan and have now made our way to Japan. We enjoyed a three month Japanese Adventure and are now back in Martha ready for some more European Adventures.

    As for my best childhood memories, they are in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA 🇺🇸 (where my parents took us on vacation every Christmas). However, I live 2600 Kms away so my chances of going back are slim 😉 as I’m in Montreal, QC, Canada 🇨🇦

      Aww lovely ❤️❤️ so glad you feel all the emotions with us in the videos 🥰🥰 my one memory stand out memory from the time we were in fort Lauderdale (we stayed for one day on our way to South Americaa few years ago) was how high the bottom of the cubicles were in the toilets 🤣 in UK our doors are right down to the floor, but in FL they were like at my knees, I was convinced everyone could see my butt 🤣🤣 funny the memories that stick on your head. Also a 80year old guy on a bike carrying a surfboard wearing American flag hotpants stuck in my brain too lmao

    We use to take the train from So. Calif. to Oklahoma in the Summer with my mom to visit her parents and sister. I did the first trip as a baby with mom, dad stayed home and worked. Later when my brother was born it was the 3 of us. We had so much fun roaming around from car to car. At home, mom would take us fishing during the week on to the pier and then on the weekends when mom and dad were sailing in the boat, my brother and I would fish from the dock inbetween riding in the boat as well. There was a park where my friend I would take some cardboard, climb up the hill and then go sliding down on our bums....and hopefully not getting injured. We rode our bikes to the beach and played in the surf. There was another park in the Summer that had a huge fountain of water coming out of the middle that we could play in and escape the heat. And, we loved camping in the Summer, usually heading up the coast or inland to a favorite lake. I still like to do what I did then, travel and camp, hence, the campervan. Enjoyed seeing your shared childhood adventures, cheers to the good old days.🥰🤗

    We moved around a lot while I was growing up and most of those places suffer (IMHO) now from gentrification, so there's no going back...BUT my favorite place was a big old farm our family rented; the house, high on a hill; the gigantic garden that the owners leased to a man who was father to a childhood friend of mine; and 300 acres of high and low fields, leading to a pine, hemlock and other firs forest, through which a lazy river ran. There were wide, flat rocks I would wade out to and just lay there in the dappled light, cooling down from the hot and humid summer days.
    Butterflies and dragonflies were everywhere.
    When I climbed back up the hill, I'd visit the landlord's stepdaughter's horse in the barn and maybe brush him down or attempt to ride him bareback through the rows of tomatoes...at which point I usually fell off...no matter, it was lovely...especially the horse's beautiful brown-eyed, empathetic gaze toward my prone self, which always made me laugh.
    The house still stands, but is not the same due to upgrades. And the bulk of those 300 acres is now home to wealthy Seniors. I'm happy for them, a little sad for the way land gets gobbled up in this country, but oh, so grateful for this memory I'll have forever.
    Love you guys; keep sending out this awesome content from your generous, hilarious selves❤

    • @phillyandkeely
      @phillyandkeely  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow what a beautifully described memory 🥰🥰🥰 really enjoyed reading that. It always is a shame to see land and nature gobbled by property developers. I really hope some of the world stays wild, because it's the same in UK as the US, feels like every inch is owned and exploited for maximum profit. So it's very special when you find places that don't feel that way.

    Born in Omaha, and grew up in the village of Silver Lake Ohio, a private lake for residents only, spent part of Kindergarten through 8th grade in Silver Lake grade school. Know one I know still lives there. I have outlived my childhood friends and haven't been back except for a weekend in 1987 which was my fiftieth anniversary of graduating from grade school.

    As a kid in the 70s we used to go to different seaside places in Norfolk UK (one week 7 different locations) but my favourite was always the hidden gem.. Brancaster beach because just miles and miles of sandy beach and no tourist attractions.. I currently live in Norwich Norfolk and I go back to this beach on many occasions just for the peaceful tranquility and knowing even on a hot summers day you can cop a squat and not be close to any other visitors... I've always rated this as the best beach in the UK that I've been to

      Great vlog, looks awesome, so fun! Keeley glad you didn't get injured , water hole looked really nice but BURRR Great day of fun and laughter 😂 Honestly didn't do any traveling as a child 😢, although my favorite memory was at my aunts farm, it was on a side hill, so you had to walk up a hill from the rod, had an open porch with a water sistrin, fresh water running in it from the hillside, Honestly the best tasting and so cold, had a wood lid on it , with a metal dipping laddle. Sadly not there anymore, went back when farmhouse was still standing, it looked so much smaller to me but the water was still running in the porch well.

    Love you both to bits. So glad Keely wasnt hurt. Try a cold rootbeer with vanilla ice cream sometime and if really adventurous add a hotdog on a bun. Its soooo freaking good. Love your channel both. Stay safe.

    Aw, that was just great... loved all those places - isn't Newcastle just a lovely town. You are too young to remember The Pierrots - which was a 'stage' set up on the main strand where performers would come from all over...music, comedy, magic shows..Punch and Judy shows.. It was so neat that from Lurgan, we could be in Newcastle in about 30-40 minutes, just out for a Sunday drive...So lucky to have been brought up there. Thanks for all the lovely memories. It really is a beautiful country. I remember my brother and his friends diving at the Bloody Bridge - but they wore wet suits. The sea is sooo cold there... From start to finish, a very enjoyable video, thank you. Loved every minute of it. So funny, Phily,"I live making videos with you, even though j want to strangle you sometimes" such a great way to sum up a great relationship. So beautiful all the places you both took us too. Great choice of music in the background and top-class editing. Drone shots were fabulous, seagull, and all. We used go to a strand, in latter years, no one swims there sadly,busy with boats, another swim place, as my kids got older I took them there, they now take their friends there. Some places have been built on,but one cool place is a old graveyard, we still love going there,it's a great walk to it. Walked there once in the night, our old postman,was sitting on a pillar, let's just say I had to go home as my pants go wet,over the fright I got 😂😂😂😂. Loved watching your trip down memory lane. 🤗 I'm guessing if your folks took you to the same spots again & again while you were growing up it makes sense you would still enjoy them as adults.
    Those onion rings looked delicious! My main criteria is that the onion is as easy to bite through as the breading - if they just slide out it's an instant fail. 🫤👎 The chip curry looked amazing, too! We don't have anything like that in the states. ❤️❤️😎✌️xx

Like yourselves, every time we went to Newcastle we simply had to go to the Amusements, Bon Bon for sweets and our chippy of choice was The Broadway Cafe. I now bring my kids to do exactly the same traditions. I discovered camping (and cider) in Tollymore & castlewellan forrest parks in my late teens/ early 20’s along with the numerous hiking trails through Tollymore & Mournes. It really is a unique and special place. I really enjoy Castlewellan for paddle boarding, Philly you look as if you need a longer paddle for when you stand up. If you haven’t already, you could check out the Mountain Bike and Electric Mountain bike shop in the Courtyard next time your passing, it’s excellent craic! We are currently in Lake Almanor California which is my husband childhood home. We’re in our new home on wheels 23’ Winnebago Ekko. And I totally get how quickly a small place gets messy. California has had a drought for years and we’ve had rain every day for a week! Love you both! Always a smile!

    Hi Philly and Keely. What a great video packed with memories of when you were a child. Those chips with curry and onion rings looked amazing. One of my childhood memories are from when my Nan had a static caravan at Prestatyn in North Wales. There used to be a train that went along the promenade up to Frith Beach. We’d then go on a massive bumpy slide on mats and on motorboats on a lake. There were amusements there too where we’d spend our pocket money. Take care. Nick

    Love the childhood nostalgia. Query on your paddleboarding though, did you check the pressure with the Manuel pump after? Just concerned they looked a wee bit soft. Enjoy your next adventures ♥️

    • @phillyandkeely
      @phillyandkeely  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah we found out after it was soft haha. I thought when the pump said 100 you stop, but apparently that's when its actually stating to properly fill haha

    Great video and lovely to see NI getting the promotion it deserves. Your childhood memories are mine too. Thanks to the local tourist board, I was able to experience a luxurious version of my childhood (2-3 bags of chips shared between five or a picnic on a day trip out).
    Went back more recently with our campervan and enjoyed the simple pleasures of van life just as much.
    Loving the N. Ireland banter.

    This was such a great idea. I will say it again... I love you guys💞! Your maze adventure took me back to a memory of me getting lost in Hampton Court Maze on a school trip. It was traumatising, honestly. I can't remember the event, only that I was so upset and the hedge😬! So I really connected with Philly when he said how long he had taken without any supplies. I grew up in South Wales and I have childhood memories of Southerndown beach, Barry Island (Gavin & Stacy land),, Porthcawl and Ogmore. Fun times... and we had holidays in my aunts cottage near Baltimore, Skibbereen, Co Cork. I can't remember my childhood but I can remember some events. Thanks again Philly & Keely, 💚 a great video. Ps. you both look so beautiful in the wedding shots. 🤩

      I imagine it would be traumatising as a kid being lost in a maze!!! I think I would be traumatised as an adult lmao. Skibereen is such a beautiful area! Cute wee vintage book store, what a lovely place to have memories of.

    I am saving these videos for my next trip the the Emerald Isle. As kid we would spend as much time as we could at the beach on the northern east coast of Florida. One day, I want to swim on the coast of Northern Ireland too. Did you ever go to Malin Point? What a beautiful walk/hike that was!
