“Make every tank similar” 😀 what an AWFUL SOLUTION. To bring up an idea that removes the identity and remove everything that makes each character special it’s crazy.
Wouldn't making every tanks role/play style overlap just mean that you end up with one tank whos better at that role than everyone else? Truly a 🤓 solution of all time
“Make every tank similar” doesn’t mean not making them unique. Junker Queen and Ramattra are quite similar, however, they are still unique and play differently. Make every tank similar means that every tank would have some sort of sustain, mobility, and mitigation tool. That doesn’t necessarily mean that make every tank able to poke, brawl, and dive.
@@mrgoldenreset9590 Making Tanks more similar wouldn't be completely bad at all and I agree JQ and Ram are well designed Tanks. However, if every Tank in Overwatch just revolves around those same three buttons (sustain, mitigation, mobility) you end up making the Tanks already designed for it obscenely powerful with no real option other than counterpicking. I would argue the very concept of mitigation and sustain for Tanks as it stands *is* the problem, at least if it's condensed to one player. Orisa, Sigma, D:VA, Zarya, and Mauga all have this issue in their respective kits becuase they're simply overkitted for what they're able to do. The others constantly rotate in and out of meta mainly off the viability of other roles + Tanks; Tanks like Ram (Sustain) , Rein(Mitigation) and Wrecking Ball (Mobility) tend to live and die off of only ONE of the attributes we'd given them here and I firmly believe giving every Tank all three would just make them oppressive raid bosses like Mauga was on launch. Neither 5v5 or 6v6 will have any longevity without a fundamental rework of Tanking away from what made Support healing so powerful in Season 8 and before.
And on top of ALL THAT, the community tends to flame the tank player even more when they force their pick, instead of counter swapping. Thus, making the role even less enjoyable...
Exactly, most of the verbal abuse from players is instantly targeted at the Tank role, t his is why you hear "Tank Diff" more then anything else. Make Overwatch Great Again 6v6
I'm not great at the game, like mid gold, and this tank swapping makes playing tank so unfun. I'm glad Ramatra seems to be usable versus most tanks, but even then, you see a Mauga or Orisa and you are in for a tough go. Its unfortunately brainless and unfun overall now IMO.

the only new playstyle to rein is to go to spawn and press H to literally pick anyone else because you literally fucking explode when you drop your shield.
"Rein got a brand new playstyle" -meanwhile the number 1 Rein player who famously endured all of OW1 CC and sustain with his creative approach to Rein, has now stopped playing Rein because nothing's viable with him anymore. Rein didn't gain a playstyle. He got a mobility scooter because the game now treats him like a retired elderly person who needs assistance for something as simple as getting around.
Even Aaron Keller has admitted that 6v6 is a better gameplay experience than 5v5 (check Flat's interview if you havent). The only real reason we have 5v5 is queue times. People are coping when they try to argue otherwise. Removing a tank doesn't add to the game, it LITERALLY removes depth from the game.
@@OO-il6slthe first had 6v6 AND an lfg but playing solo is always gonna be a skill diff with 6 new players every game but the matchmaking was way closer in ow1 anyway
@@OO-il6sl That take just ignores all of the intricate ways that having +1 tank improves freedom and playstyle expression, and balances a lot of the game's problems
@@OO-il6sl How about 6v6 AND guilds. I've advocated for exactly that on the OW forums on bnet for literal years. It's what the game needs, and what the players deserve.
They'll say this and then in the next breath, say that 100 million active accounts have signed on their game alone. Even 10-15 million accounts would be well enough for players to accept a new Tank playstyle without messing with ques. Why _are_ we comfortable leaving 1/3rd of our players to play a completely different game than the other two thirds? And we expect them to keep playing?
The video is basically: "Oh you have a problem with this hero in 5v5? Ok well then just rework their entire kit and it will be fine. If we change their entire identity they will fit prefectly."
I honestly think queue times are longer right now than they would be bringing back 6v6, we got more players now, but even though there is one less tank per team i bet there are more than 50% less of the player base playing tank because it's that bad of an experience. Number of tank players would go way up with a switch to 6v6, maybe by 300+%@@xRichieeex
@@TooEaxyAlso, I play on Switch. Support is almost always the fastest que to get into, even when they were incredibly powerful pre-Season 9. I've seen in real time the Tank role que get lower and lower overall with 5v5's playstyle. Nowadays, Tank and Support ques are in virtual lockstep; 1-3 min que times are the norm. I really wouldn't take the argument too seriously with that in mind.
nah this is proof that even some top500 players dont know what they are talking about. Dps que was 20-30 mins for top 500 in ow1 tank que times have never suffered in 6v6 or 5v5 because there is still a fraction of the tank players that there is for other roles. Even in 5v5 there isnt enough tank players going back to 6v6 now would literally kill the game. dps and support que times above diamond would be 30 mins to an hour. The game would die
Counterswapped existed in Ow1 sure. But the beauty of it was, my tank countered the enemy tank that countered my tank partner, whose tank countered the enemy tank's tank partner. So it evened out, and the victory went to whoever had the best skills and/or synergy.
People against 6v6 often say how it was necessary because "not enough tank players". Then what's the logic behind 5v5 then, because literally everything that makes 5v5 work is inherently designed to make tanking MORE miserable than it already was pre 5v5. *In actuality the only thing that made tank players leave, were 3 fold:* 1. No real dev/balance team for 3 whole years, coupled with a "crawl-walk-run" mentality that meant we'd often go 2-4 months with no proper balance patches 2. The primary tool that the late OW1 skeleton dev/balance crew used, was power creep through CC, and then sustain to combat CC, in an endless cycle. And who is hit the hardest by CC? The frontline, aka the tank role. 3. Bloated heroes were put into the game and left unchecked for months (see point 1), which after players learned to min/max their kits, developed unhealthy comp styles like GOATS and Double Shield. This was never a 6v6 issue, it was a hero design bloat issue. Brig took +20 nerfs just to bring her in line with other viable supports. Sigma is still better on a tank-v-tank basis than pretty much all other tanks. Orisa got a full hero rework (originally intended for 6v6, but was kept for OW2 among other hero changes, to add on as another upsell to make the sequel title seem worthy)
People who argue Q times and numbers also ignore how we have more players than ever, plenty of which would probably play Tank if it wasn’t miserable and with every content creator rightfully saying so.
@@malicious8767 Yep and they also ignore how shoddy the matchmaker is now that the range of matchmaking has been loosened severely to ensure the semblance of low queue times. I mean, those same people keep asking "why is this high rank player in my lobby???" yet they can't add 2+2 together and see queue times would be in the gutter if the game actually matchmade fairly like it did in OW1.
@@Real_MisterSir and they also conveniently forget that they are playing against Overwatch 1 players that vastly outrank them in gamesense across ALL SKILL LEVELS and wonder why the DPS passive needed bigger bullets, or why entire teams still get spawn camped by a lone Genji in Platinum, or why Rein supposedly can't be reworked depite him being dogshit?
@@kingplutoxiao1 For real. It always ends in a conclusion like "5v5 is easier to balance, we just have to make the game worse and voila, it's balanced!" like are they even doing the 2+2 equation to their own words??
@@jjdefenderin both really. Tank reworks are necessary in both formats and I don't want every Tank becoming Mauga in 5v5. Zarya doesn't even need to aim right now.
Reworking every single hero who isn't designed around 5v5 is definetly waaaay more work then just bringing 6v6 back but it is the most likely path for Blizzard to take since we all know for a fact that they don't want to admit their defeat by bringing 6v6 back.
@nailinthefashion What was a common factor behind each of those metas? They could be fixed with a patch. They were all hero balancing issues and were fixed by solely changing ONE hero. Lack of tank synergy, counterswapping being much more impactful (even at lower ranks), lack or hero identity, tanks that are impossible to 1v1, not being able to add that 1 extra friend to your play group, much more boring tempo to fights, less value/chances for skill expression, less teamcompositions, less team cohesion and communication, massive pressure on one player to play well, all these issues are format based and are MUUUUCH more harmful to the game than solely a bad patch that can be fixed. Funny thing is, even after all of this, tank STILL is the worst role to play, in fact much worse than overwatch 1. I mained tank in overwatch 1 and I literally cant even bring myself to play the damn role in overwatch 2, it's so bad. It was not worth the content drought in overwatch 1, and has caused many of my friends to flat out abandon the game forever (even I abandoned it for about a year and a half). In my opinion 5v5 is overall a much worse experience, made just because bobby wanted a new shiny game to sell for his investors. I dont even think queue times is a fair argument, because during 6v6 the game wasn't free and and the end years of overwatch 1 barely had new content because they were building a story mode that we will never even fucking see.
@@nailinthefashionand im not even going to get into the fact on how worse the "new hero metas" are in overwatch 2 compared to overwatch 1 as a whole, or how those heros are locked behind paywalls in a competetive game. But yeah, defend this shit I guess. They even had to increase everyones hitboxes in the game, lol, holy shit it is crazy how many changes they had to do to justify this format that are utterly insane, and yet people will still defend it (in a smaller span of time compared to overwatch 1 also). @Bken96 its why i quit like a year ago The gaslighting is what gets us People didnt think tank syn was OP, the meta always mostly has been support driven but what gets me is if you take a Game Theory class, you realize Samito is 100% correct. 18:50 literal truth spoken from Sam here, ive been saying since the start of the whole 5v5 vs 6v6 debate that to balance these hero's that were created in 6v6 is like going around you elbow to get to your thumb. its just an ego issue from Blizzard where they cant and wont say that they were wrong with this format and fix it. Blizzard needs to be held accountable and take responsibility. Quit lying to your consumers and give us a WORTH product. Either way, thank you for the video Sam and Coach Mills.

Sometimes, I want to play a certain hero and launch the game. In 6v6, most of the time that was fine, and when I found a loosing matchup, I still had a decent chance to win. In 5v5, I'll be lucky if I can play a single game without being told "swap or face almost certain defeat and get flamed by your whole team." I want to have fun playing this game, it's fine if I have to swap once every 10 games, but when it's almost every game I can no longer have fun playing what I want without spending a whole evening hoping to have a single game where I don't get counter swapped. And then people are surprised the tank player base is dwindling.

They're really just trying to pick away at technicalities here, without getting to the core. You can't remove counters. Every game ever has counters. It's not realistic to remove them. You can, however, reduce how much counterswapping ruins your fun, and this is MOST possible in 6v6. It doesn't matter if it's PARTIALLY possible in 5v5, 6v6 is STILL going to be better in this regards.
LOL expecting 4 randoms in ranked to swap to help the tank being hard countered by the enemy team is a hilarious point. Kajar has not been in low ranks before where they won't swap then quickly go tank difff.

5v5 defenders are to the point they are calling for REINHARDT AND ZARYA reworks... nobody for 6 years had a problem with them until now... i wonder why
When he talks about how dps and supports can also swap to help their tank, he assumes that your teammates will swap or know what to swap to lol. And doesnt help to disprove Sam's argument that the tank has to counter swap.
Thanks to 5v5, having mastered "only" 8 out of 12 tanks means you're THROWING the moment you queue. That's how bad counter-swapping is. Sometimes there's only one solution to the enemy tank problem, and I don't wanna know how many people stopped playing tank because of it. Tank is the least fun role as is. Now you make us do it ALONE and force us off the 2-3 tanks we actually enjoy playing. Blizzard's stubbornness is gonna drive me mad
Rein rework idea: Remove pin and give him an ability where he spins his hammer around and blocks all incoming damage and can knock back enemies while also gaining a small speed boost to himself. Remove fire strike and give him an abilty where he throws his hammer and if he hits an enemy they take damage, get knocked back, and get stunned and if they hit a wall they get stunned longer. Change his shield to just be a protective coating around himself that blocks 60% of all incoming damage while making him immune to cc and critical hits. Remove his swing to instead give him a projectile minigun that overheats after a while. Remove earth shatter to instead give him an ult where he spins his hammer above his head sucking in nearby enemies while charging up to a slam that changes damage depending on how long you charged it for. If they did all that and finally fixed his character, he would be playable and not be terrible all the time in 5v5 😊
The funniest thing about the guys opinion is that he literally at points is word for word giving exact reasons for why 5v5 doesn’t work then does some weird whataboutism to justify why we shouldn’t do 6v6 and just deal with 5v5… like what?! 😂
Bro thinks reworking the entire cast instead of going back to 6v6 would be easier and better💀 and let's be honest even if you reworked them they would still counter each other unless they are all the same hero.
And doesn’t acknowledge that if they’re all similar, they all fall over the same DPS and Supp counterswaps so even less control as a Tank in combating those
Didnt the original developers before choosing 6v6 try 7v7 and 5v5? I'm pretty sure I remember Jeff said they tried those but it just didnt work, so they chose 6 v 6 in the end.
The point of needing your team to counterswap is also just not a viable option. We're talking about RANKED TEAMMATES HERE. I'm a doom player, I can get my team to run dive maybe once in every 6 games. There's nothin I can feasibly do about that, so the enemy tank or dps counterswapping me, still exists and is an unsolvable issue. Putting solutions behind something like team coordinaton, which hardly exists outside of pro play (and also using pro play as an example for it) is just silly. Also low rank would probably where counterswapping is at it's best because people don't know counters as well, can't play against counters as well, ANd... you don't need to fully understand or have a grasp on a hero to be able to counterswap and get value. That's the thing with counterswapping, it's so low effort and low skill expression that you don't NEED to be amazing at the hero, you just need to know "this ability, shuts down that hero on the enemy team" and just profit off that.
The ultimate argument from 5v5 is just "play better", like of course if you ENTIRE TEAM helps you out, then you can play into your counters but thats asking too much from 4 random people
How can a company do so well, then pivot completely into making the worst decisions FOR FOUR YEARS STRAIGHT? The balancing of Overwatch will confuse me to the day I die, I think…
38:24 yep its why me and my friends started playing open q it has more variety and a higher skill expression then role lock, you get to play a variety of comps like 4 tanks 1 lucio or all dps or 4 supports enabling 1 tank or dps and my friends who dont play much tank can play it because they dont have to worry about making all the space they would have to do as a solo tank which give them time to learn the character
People don't understand the point, they keep brining up high rank/low rank, Winning and Losing but thats not the point. I played yesterday and won 8 games in a row on tank, And I can't say that I had fun in a single game. Win or lose, High rank or low. The tank experience is just overall worse in 5v5.
flats had a really good observation recently that part of what makes counterswapping so prevalent is the new popularity of tiktok and youtube shorts. it's easy to tell people "if the enemy orisa is rolling you just pick zarya. if you're struggling with a winston pick bastion" in a tiktok. it's obviously possible to communicate ways that you can counterplay those switches, but it's way less suited for the short-term content most players consume. the sheer popularity of the media form has artificially increased the prevalence of counterswapping because now, even little timmy in silver can know that zen does well into rein even if he doesn't watch "educational" content beyond his tiktok feed.
I just can't play tank in overwatch 2 love playing support and dps but I use to flex all 3 and now on tank I just hate it. I miss overwatch one 6v6 would be my dream come true if it ever came back. If a game like overwatch comes out with that better format Imma dip.
I legit had a game the other day where I had a tank that was brand new to the game. They played one game of dps in the season before and came into ranked. They got put into high gold off drop and played Reinhart and got destroyed. I tried to talk them through it and help them make better decisions but it just didn't go well and it was gg. That wouldn't happen if we had an extra tank because then our brand new tank might have had more space to learn the ropes instead of everything being on them.
this is just an argument about how overwatch 5v5 should be if the world was a perfect place and everyone played the game like they used to. they don’t. everyone wants to win no matter and the tiktokers will pick the tank that owdaddy445 said counters the other and ends up making more people switch to feel like they have a better chance to win. also im a master tank who doesn’t even play tank that much compared to the other roles and it sucks cause i loved off tanking until all the main tank players suddenly disappeared and i had to fill the role. i dont even know how to tank in this game anymore besides playing a wall and watching my dps kill or die off cooldown

As much as I agree that 6v6 is better, they're not going back to 6v6 because of the esports Situation of 5v5 being the default setup for esports and OWCS having already started. Also the tank queues are going to be unsolvable because they cannot make tanking appealing enough. I think we have to give up on the 6v6 debate and move to 5v5 Open queue with additions like min 1-1-1, max 1 main shield tank, max 2 tanks, etc. (ofc tanks will need to be reverted/changed to allow multiple tanks like in 6v6)
10000% true that the snowball games i had in overwatch 1 i can tell are WAY WAY WAY less in the 7 years of gameplay, that, i had in OW2 in 2, like everytime i play i have one or more games that are a snowball to my team or we do to the enemy team, in just two years of game is insane the sheer quantity of games like this.

He did get a new style
It's called death. Don't pick the hero. I beg of you.
Yea reins new playstyle is go back to spawn on cd.😂
Queue times aren’t a problem if they make tank fun to play. There’s also wayyyy more players now with free to play
Blizz's refusal to go back to 6v6 is basically them just refusing to admit they were wrong with 5v5.
It's obviously just queue times but they are burning the players patience that play tank it will be too late eventually.
queue times are a very strong argument for 5v5, You gotta give them that at least. Everything else tho I think 6v6 is the format.
My queue times right now are long as fuck anyway. I’d rather wait a little longer to play a significantly better and more fun game.

nah this is proof that even some top500 players dont know what they are talking about. Dps que was 20-30 mins for top 500 in ow1 tank que times have never suffered in 6v6 or 5v5 because there is still a fraction of the tank players that there is for other roles. Counterswapped existed in Ow1 sure. But the beauty of it was, my tank countered the enemy tank that countered my tank partner, whose tank countered the enemy tank's tank partner. So it evened out, and the victory went to whoever had the best skills and/or synergy.

What we actually need is Torb wall climb
🤣🤣🤣🤣
People against 6v6 often say how it was necessary because "not enough tank players". Then what's the logic behind 5v5 then, because literally everything that makes 5v5 work is inherently designed to make tanking MORE miserable than it already was pre 5v5.
*In actuality the only thing that made tank players leave, were 3 fold:*
1. No real dev/balance team for 3 whole years, coupled with a "crawl-walk-run" mentality that meant we'd often go 2-4 months with no proper balance patches

6v6 was boring af. And I’m a tank player.
Actually insane. Reworking zarya? Thought she transitioned to 5v5 more smoothly than most tanks in concept. Your genji gets to RP as winston
@nailinthefashion but why though u just say blanket statements without explanation...
@nailinthefashion Yes. In the 5v5 format.
@nailinthefashion YEAH..... for mercy, YEAH, it's totally worth it.
@@jjdefenderin both really. Tank reworks are necessary in both formats and I don't want every Tank becoming Mauga in 5v5. Zarya doesn't even need to aim right now.
Even then I wouldn't say Zarya transitioned well. She's either too broken are too weak. Same as Roadhog and D.V.A.
Sometimes, I want to play a certain hero and launch the game.
In 6v6, most of the time that was fine, and when I found a loosing matchup, I still had a decent chance to win.
In 5v5, I'll be lucky if I can play a single game without being told "swap or face almost certain defeat and get flamed by your whole team."

I don't trust this team to rework ONE hero and make it better!
Didnt the original developers before choosing 6v6 try 7v7 and 5v5? I'm pretty sure I remember Jeff said they tried those but it just didnt work, so they chose 6 v 6 in the end.
Yep
I love you doom players, every time I get one on my team i swap to tracer to help him dive squishies.
How is it possible to that limiting hero design is the solution before 6v6

i really will never understand the 5v5 copium. like its just objectively worse 😭
38:24 yep its why me and my friends started playing open q it has more variety and a higher skill expression then role lock, you get to play a variety of comps like 4 tanks 1 lucio or all dps or 4 supports enabling 1 tank or dps and my friends who dont play much tank can play it because they dont have to worry about making all the space they would have to do as a solo tank which give them time to learn the character
thank you samito for defending the 6vs6! i hate playing tank now. the counter swap issue is in every rank. even in silver now people counterswap.
Hes an easy way to disprove 5v5. Imagine the power creep if they took away the healer and not the tank.
Ah the classic "I'm a philosophy major" therefore ik what I'm talking about
the education system is baby food nowadays. Only respectable fields are probably STEM.
OW should not have counterswaping. Becouse 99,99% of audience can or want to play 2-3 heroes in a role at max.
I just can't play tank in overwatch 2 love playing support and dps but I use to flex all 3 and now on tank I just hate it. I miss overwatch one 6v6 would be my dream come true if it ever came back. If a game like overwatch comes out with that better format Imma dip.
Yo shoutout to both of you for keeping your thumbnail guy well-paid and fed
