I'd part this one out. It's a basket case with all broken plastics. After rebuilding the engine you'll have a lot of time and money into it and it will still look like crap.

I say part it out to help others repair their machines that were not so mistreated. Heck this is not some collector's item or even a classic, it's a quad that was beaten to death.

As a kid I rode the hell outta my aunts 185s. I'm almost 50, and I now own that Honda. It might smoke like a 3 acre tire fire, but it runs!
I'd part out this one Joe. But don't lose your content, film the process.
I think in this case I would part it out. Alot of money in the engine not including the plastics. Repairing or buying new could cost $$$. I love watching you rebuild engines you've taught me alot . Ultimately it's up to you . Take care loves seeing your wife and baby girl in the boat video.
If your plan is to fix it, get all new plastics and do it right. If your not going to get all new plastics, you might as well part it out.

Joe, judging by all of the body damage and statements by the seller, I think that it’s possible that the kids who were riding it just before failure , abused this machine and may have over-rev’d it which could have caused internal engine damage. Just a thought…. Thanks for your content.
Part it out. Transmission, clutch, flywheel, lower end, EFI \fuel rail , computer, wheels you will definitely make some money over your initial purchase price. Good luck.
When you ask why there are no access points on the machine, is because Polaris wants you to have it serviced at the Dealer. I worked at the factory that built these engines on the line, and they are built well, but from an engine perspective they are not good quality for long life like a Honda, or Yamaha. Even though they are built in the US, many of the parts to build the engines come from many other countries, to save money. Many times I have seen no work on the lines, because they were waiting for parts from Japan, or Europe. That bike was beat to death from the first minute the owners had it. The easiest way to bend a valve in any engine is to over-rev a four stroke engine, no matter if it is a small one cylinder, like this one, or a V-8 race engine. The tolerances are not forgiving, and I cringe every time anyone starts a rebuilt engine and rev it high right away. Seen many in my 69 years, explode. You have a good engine and machine for your channel, but the cost to put it back to a serviceable machine is much more than it is worth, so parting it would be my recommendation 😊
Truth. Especially the part when a fresh rebuild gets revved to the moon on the initial startup, YIKES! I cringe same as you, there's a break-in period for a reason folks.. those parts need the lubrication to do its thing and there will be a little metal in your first break-in oil change. Things have been that way since the beginning of engines and NOTHING has changed in 140 years or so.. Please take care of a new engine, seriously, if you do and it was built properly, it'll last a long long time with some routine maintenance. Beating your motor and not providing it with service will surely end up just like this one.. 900 something original miles and shot. Completely shot.

@@AnthonyRBlacker Funny thing is, if you plan to use a RZR for desert conditions, the manual recommends you drive it at full throttle right from the start and for the next 25 hours of break-in period. I cannot imagine many having a long life with that kind of treatment.

That machine sure could have used a good wash before taking it apart. I'd be concerned about dirt falling down the spark plug hole.
In this case no need to worry about dirt getting into the engine half of piston is already in there 😂

I think this machine needs to be dropped into a scrap yard, not cleaned lmao. That's not worth $500, certainly not the 1500 he paid or 8000 he claimed.

You need your own powerwasher and clean that dirty engine before working on.

These engines are zero time engines. That is do it perfectly and run it for a month, then worn totally out.
Many episodes ago back in the winter I thought I remember him saying he bought a power washer but it was to cold for him to set up. My guess would be why he never power washes his vehicles at his home, is where would all the oil and dirt go? He would be killing the grass and messing with environment. I know oil comes from the ground. But there is ground water to think about. Who knows? Yes he could take it to a Mr. Bubbles power washing station. I don't know - for me it would be hard to work around the dirt. He is a pro though. Who am I to be critical, I enjoy the content.
Would make a donation for him to get a parts washer.
Wounder what he does with the waste by-products. As closely as it is regulated now a days.

I watch almost all of your videos, and you’ve taught me quite a bit about small engine internals.
I’ve seen some comments about cleaning these things off before you tear into them. I would absolutely give these rides a power wash on my way home.
The main reason I comment it that you put so much time and effort into rebuilding these engines and making sure everything inside “looks really good”, but you put no effort into the outside. If I were buying a used bike/atv and the seller told me the engine was rebuilt I’d expect it to look fresh on the outside too. I’d bead blast or “vapor hone” the outsides, or at least a coat of matte black paint could really up the resale
I’m with comment 34. It bugs the hell out of me because you work on these engines with dirt falling off every thing you take off. It’s a few bucks to spray it with the rinse cycle.
Yeah, he's got a power washer. It would take 10 minutes to wash and dry.

it maybe just a stuck valve i wonder why you have still not purchased a bore camera. They are cheap and they can look to the sides.

I can’t believe that you don’t pressure wash the engine at least before you start to disassemble the engine. That is a major cringe factor for me.

Paying $1500 for a machine a lot of people would have to pay to have hauled off is the cringe for me.

Honestly, if you want something that looks nice, you'll be in quite a bit of $$$ for all of the plastics, but if you just want something to beat on, I'd just rebuild it and do some basic repairs on the plastics. Parting it out would probably make more financial sense though.
I enjoy the rebuilds… but don’t go broke. Sometimes parting it out and moving on is wiser. But I’ll support whichever you choose.
If you want to just make money part it out....for show proposes I want you to fix it....I am thinking of MEEEE. lol
Go for the rebuild and keep it for yourself a lot of money into it just what you need to you’re definitely gonna see one for parts down the road and you definitely have the shop to fix almost anything keep up the hard work love the videos got a Yamaha Kodiak in the shed right now I paid 200 bucks for it

I owned one of these machines I had a 2014 Polaris ACE 325 and it only lasted me 3 years before the engine died can't find parts for these machines so I just scrapped mine

Looks like parting it out is the best and easiest way out of this . Depends how much you can get for it fixed. SO if your a busy guy then sell the parts. Great videos .Always enjoy the trouble shooting when you get a new build. Cheers.
valve's can be easly bent by over reving, going down a steep hill and over reving the motor...seen it a lot with kid operators back in my shop when ATV's first came out.
We live in a world where people will pay 10 grand for a toy but wont spent 20 bucks to change the oil. People have become so lazy. My last 2 bikes were disasterous money pits ! Lesson learned !!
Facts, and they blame it on the brand.
When you buy used, you're probably buying someone else's problem child. In few cases, you get lucky but in many, you don't. Rarely does anyone get rid of a perfect machine for real cheap, almost never.
throw away economics moving us toward rent/subscription model where you own nothing.

Drives me INSANE that you never clean engines before you start working on them. Or carbs. You just wipe them down. They make pressure washers and Chem dips for a reason.
Joe is a clean person. His home and shop are clean I’ve seen guys never clean the floor and spend hours searching for lost parts The dirty machine will be cleaned -he probably thought it would run . It’s not like it his only machine ! Now he can put it outside and clean one part at a time as they sell. Now he can get on to the next bike! In fact he is cleaner than most!
In rural Alaska...these vehicles are your daily drivers year round. In the Alaska winter they are only driven in the villages. "Snow machines" (snowmobiles)...as the native Akaskan's call them...are used in both the villages and out in the tundra. Blue Sky's.
I would think if you buy something like that you would pressure wash it first the motor and that way you don’t have to worry about stuff going down inside the motor I mean, that’s what I would do. Pressure wash first that way you have some sort of idea what you got
Money pit restoration!!! Plastics spent, Ghost head light spent, tires way spent, motor astronomical Bucks not spent YET!!!, Labor hours of time not spent Yet!!! Time involved ahead? is it worth the quick rewarding fix, and time going fast on the Land???????
Razor ACE, NICE LITTLE TOYS, BOUT IT. Check chassis well for cracks, if it was nose dived common break point behind cockpit on cage. Good luck Joe, you're gonna need it.. 😮
Pump air into spark plug hole and listen where the air comes out. Intake and or exhaust
Omg all that gunk is falling into to the engine. Are you trying to make a statement of some kind with never cleaning anything at all before you open up an engine?
I like the channel but for the life of me will never understand why he never cleans anything before he works on it. A simple 5 minute pressure washing is all it takes. I never once worked on any of my bikes without pressure washing first. Bizarre especially when you're going to open up an engine like that.
I am tearing my hair out shouting at the TV. What is wrong with this guy and working on dirty engines. Also after rebuilds always revs the shit out of new cold engine and no warm up.

From what I saw , 2-3 brothers rolled it in the mud. It sat there for 2 weeks and they tried to start it but there was no oil and it started. Revved it up and piston was dry. Thats my theory, part it out. Great Job. Ted- Colorado

It does not have to be out of time for it to bend the valve if you have valve float and the valve stays open because it can't return fast enough the piston can come up and hit the valve even though it is in time
OG subscribers will remember when you would buy a bike and all it would need was a carb clean, service and WD40 on the plastics then good to go.

watching lots of TH-cam videos helps but you have to go and buy an old bike and fix it to start really learning
always love that joe does tell us the buy price... that makes it fun to watch and see if the money was worth it or it was a hassle and money wasted, just sad we never seen anything when he sells it (not that its interesting to see how much he sell it) its better to see how much he paid and how much he spend on it, so you can judge if it was worth it.
alot stoped posting buying prices cause poeple complain when they sell that they made profit on it. but its more helpfull to know buy price spend price on parts and time to see if you can get a good deal or not
Usually a loss of coolant causes the bore to distort, piston seizes, rips the skirt off and it wouldn't have been very long before the rod sticks through the block. It didn't look like oil starvation because there was oil everywhere. You are a good producer of videos, well edited, I enjoyed the carnage. Its summer now, lets see some jetski action maybe!!

get yourself a pressure washer and CLEAN it before disassembly....!
If you think you will enjoy rebuilding them do it. Also keeping old machines alive is cool as nothing is built to last now days. Really love the videos. Thanks for taking the time making them. All the best 👍
Leak down test would have been helpful.
Air out the air box= intake valves.
Out the exhaust= exhaust valves.
Out the oil fill cap= rings/piston.

Never use a magnet on internal engine components! I creates magnetism so metal shavings sticks to it. Not good.
I'd say part it out. As other's have pointed out - you may rebuild that engine and get it running perfectly, but doing that _and_ replacing all the broken plastic covers would be way too expensive and not worth it. One option would be to rebuild the engine since you already have it apart and sell it as a complete engine and junk the rest.
He makes a crap ton on $$ off this video. Why would you not repair it? He'll make more money doing another video on the repair and running of the machine. 2 videos making $$ vs 1 and then parting it out. If he wasn't making videos on the repairs, then yes, it would make financial sense to part it out. However, the 2nd video will make more $$ than parting it out so in this case, it makes financial sense to fix it.
Ive never thought “this could be a good parts project” before on any of your videos… a couple old stuff just seemed to be give away or take to dump but this is fugly and the parts are easily worth a lot and most of the work is already done taking it apart so part this one out!
Some Polaris engines run a bit lean from factory, to meet emission targets.
That check valve may look good but it still could be out of spec. Any little play can make it stick under pressure if it doesn't travel perfectly straight
That filter looks filthy, thus there could have been dust ingestion through intake boot if it was not performing at its best.
My best guess is the thing ran too lean and destroyed itself. And really... a leaky boot in my above scenario would make the lean condition worse than it already was from factory, accelerating its death at just 900 miles.
I'd say fix it. Just make sure previous owner didn't grenade the transmission or diff

You'd probably be better off just parting that thing out, but considering you've never had one before and I'm pretty sure those things are quite fun to rip around on, with how cheap you got it, it's probably (not really) worth fixing and then selling it after you have some fun with it and make another video out of it!
Joe seems to be very talented and makes interesting content, fixable or not. I don't think 'cost' comes into his decision making for the most part, this is a free hobby for him that we all get to enjoy. That said, given that money is not the primary motive for these vids, I'd be super keen to see if he could buy a cheapish boring machine and bore out the scratches on the cylinder wall, and maybe even deal with the warping. It would most likely be a fail, but we could all get to see how and if this would even be possible. If he was successful, could he then find a new piston and rings to suit, and get it all back together again and working? Thanks Joe for your fantastic content!
I enjoy your approach. Sometimes u get huge deal. Other times u get a heap but its all great to see u do the dreams u love doing. Everyone should have passion for crafts. The parts for everything are outsourced now except Honda or Toyota or A few others.
You need a bore scope, it’s always nice to see in the cylinder and check valves that way.
U can use a torch to checl the thermostat i stead of brinfing it i to the housr
I have one just like it on the bench right now execpt the piston is turned sideways in the bore and locked up the rod and crank look fine along with the cases. Most carnage i have ever seen
Part it out ... show the prosses of how and what you do like what would be useful for other projects like the tires and rims on another quad or such . Just a idea of everything that could be salvage and or have so valuable things.

I would rebuild it! But that's me! I can see that the idea of parting it out is tempting, but then that would mean surrendering to it! I do NOT surrender or quit unless it's hopeless and this machine is FAR from hopeless! But hey, it's your money and time! Whatever you do I will still see you on the next Video!

You definitely seem knowledgeable on engines and electrical and even the mechanics, but you should watch a few videos on how to properly secure a vehicle with straps! Other than that, keep up the great work young man!
Love your videos... I have learned so much... enough to start buying fixing and reselling a few myself... you should consider teaching or interning preparing individuals to work for dealerships...on to the next one...
It's been rolled a lot. The ace is very easy to tip over and it takes a driver to know how to keep it upright. Fun little machine when running correctly to be honest.
When a motor has alot of time on it the valve springs loss spring pressure and you can float the valves at high rpm and can hit the piston and bend them
I think it'd be nice to see you fix it and get it running then build a diamond plated flatbed on the back
It's hard to make a profit if you can't find a similar broken one cheaply where you can get the parts you need, but on the other hand, there's always a use for that one on the farm
Rebuilding it & keeping it for a couple years will make you some good money! Lots of plastic available for them New! They stopped making the ACE platform they are very desirable! Great for kids to grow into! The 150,325,570 & 900 are worth fixing! IMO
You mentioned how the spark plug looked like it had been running lean. It would only take a little bit of detenation to shatter a piston with that thin of skirt material. If you plan on rebuilding this I would suggest that you make sure it is running much richer to prevent future detenation issues. Also, since there was no signs of contamination in the oil pump I'd just thoroughly clean the oil passages in the crank and rod and reuse them. Just my 2 cents on the matter. 🤓

With the shape the plastic is in, replacing the tires and fixing all the unknowns I’d part it out and save money and the headache!
