- In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges Gowher Rizvi, the International Affairs advisor to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, on the state of the country’s democracy and whether it is heading towards authoritarianism.
Once one of the poorest countries in the region, Bangladesh’s economy has been booming over the last decade, with economic growth faster than its neighbours, India and Pakistan. It also boasts lower infant mortality and longer life expectancy than its peers.
However, human rights groups warn that the country is becoming increasingly autocratic, accusing the government of clamping down on any form of dissent and hounding and locking up its political rivals.
In recent elections Bangladesh’s ruling party, the Awami League, reasserted its power following a landslide general election victory. The opposition rejected the results, amid violence which saw 17 killed and allegations of vote-rigging and intimidation.
Our guest on Head to Head is Gowher Rizvi, close ally of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and advisor on international affairs. Mr Rizvi is also a renowned historian and former Oxford University scholar.
We challenge Mr Rizvi on Sheikh Hasina’s government’s record in office and whether it is increasingly trying to silence its critics. We also ask him about the ongoing Rohingya crisis, where over 1 million refugees have fled Myanmar and are living in camps in Bangladesh. Is Bangladesh doing enough to help?
We are joined by a panel of three experts:
Saida Muna Tasneem, Bangladesh's High Commissioner to the UK and Ireland.
Abbas Faiz, South Asia analyst at Essex University, previously worked for Amnesty International for more than 30 years.
Tasneem Khalil, Swedish Bangladeshi journalist, author of Jallad: Death Squads and State Terror in South Asia.

I am a Bangladeshi. 30th December (the day of election) was one of the most shameful day of the history of our country. From midnight ruling party Awamileague 's worker started to take control of pooling booth. By morning they have already casted half amount number of vote. In thousands of pooling booth they didn't let enter a single voter and where they allowed voter enter to pooling booth they forced voter to vote for Awamileague.
Police, Army did nothing. And we lost our most precious thing, Democracy along with our freedom of speech.

Qatar's TV channel is worried about the democracy of others, but what is the state of Qatar's democracy? The following information is taken from the page of Human Rights Watch.

Tell the journalist if he has the courage to ask the emir of Qatar when Qatar will abandon the monarchy and introduce democracy. Only then can you understand what the real definition of journalism is?

there was a Dhaka city mayor election yesterday. Because we knew, the ruling party will take it upon themselves to cast our vote, nobody bothered to show up. almost all the voting centre was empty all day. even with all the illegal vote, they managed to cast only 31% vote. Things have gone so bad, its very hard to have a good laugh.
it has escalated to 50% at the end of the day suddenly and the Election Commission said they are very satisfied. the funny thing is the 20% raise of vote cast overnight, only in Bangladesh

I am a Bangladeshi. 30th December (the day of election) was one of the most shameful day of the history of our country. From midnight ruling party Awamileague 's worker started to take control of pooling booth. By morning they have already casted half amount number of vote. In thousands of pooling booth they didn't let enter a single voter and where they allowed voter enter to pooling booth they forced voter to vote for Awamileague.
Police, Army did nothing.
And we lost our most precious thing, Democracy along with our freedom of speech.

I'm American and know nothing about the situation in the Bangladesh. I swear I've never even heard of Sheikh Hasina before this. But I've watched this entire video because it's so refreshing to see a journalist like Mehdi Hasan really hold a politicians feet to the flame and confront them. American journalists would never tell a politician to their face that they're lying. It's a disgrace.

Almost everyone in Bangladesh nowadays has relatives or know someone who've been killed, abducted, tortured, or persecuted by this inhumane corrupted illegitimate puppet regime. As I'm writing this comment I'm also in a huge risk as the media even social media are massively filtered and IT cell can arrest me anytime.
Many things should be said, But to make it short for now - I wanna address another big issue- this government and their blind beneficiaries (who're maybe 5-10% out of total population of around 180 million) always brag about:- "The Economic growth" -
Basically, this growth (there are some deep issues inside the statistics too) isn't really a success of this regime. Rather they thwarted the economic growth which the hard-working brilliant Bangladeshis deserved. Entrepreneurs, Foreign workers were harassed in every way. Corruption and incapable governance killed our most promising industries. But just because we love peace, worked hard, tried our best and large in numbers - that's why after all these injustices our economy thrived so far. But the future isn't bright at all.
Let's pray to God for this country, and for all the oppressed people of this world....
