How the elite police force RAB terrorizes the people of Bangladesh | DW Documentary

- When Bangladesh’s men in black arrive, usually late at night, it’s like death has come knocking on your door: Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is an elite police unit that was founded in 2004 to fight terror and crime.
For years, the United States and other Western countries played an important role in training and equipping the force - despite allegations of wide-spread human rights violations. It would take until 2018 for the US to stop funding RAB, followed by sanctions in late 2021.
Now, for the first time ever, two insiders of Bangladesh’s elite force claim how RAB systematically and with explicit backing from the highest political level has been committing murder, torture, and abductions.

In 2009, I with my friends arranged a cricket tournament, During a match, a murder occurred beside the field where we held the tournament. RAB captured one of our friends suspecting him of being connected with the murder and asked for 100k taka from his father if he wanted his son unharmed. His father denied to give asked money because my friend was innocent and had no connection with the murder. By 10PM on that day, RAB denied capturing my friend and my friend completely disappeared from the country. 5 days later, RAB handed over my friend to the local police. RAB tortured him by beating him, electrocuting him by urinating in a wired bucket, submerging his head underwater, preventing breathing with a wet towel, etc. 4/5 months later, my friend was diagnosed with a damaged bladder, severely damaged both kidneys and mildly damaged lever. He died 2 years later. His father tried to sue RAB but no lawyer wanted to take the case.
Before this incident, I thought all of the victims of RAB were some sort of connected with the crime or bad people. I was one of the supporters of Crossfire (the local name of RAB's encounter) back then but after witnessing my close one's suffering, I realized what monster we have created.

The present government is trying to recruit honest and talented officers of various forces. Because of RAB, the people of Bangladesh feel a lot of relief from terrorists, Islamic militants, and anti-national gangs. Still, it's not that these forces don't have some bad guys, but the entire force cannot be held responsible for a few isolated bad guys.

I'm an Indian citizen, just completed watching this documentary.
The entire documentary seemed like a suspense and horror movie.
No wonder, the revolution in Bangladesh was spontaneous and the public was united to uproot the the villain of this horror movie.
It's simply unbelievable that a woman, who's otherwise is seen as an epitome of love and compassion, could be worse than a Witch.
Sheikh Hasina, the Witch should be brought back to Bangladesh and made accountable for all the crime she committed during the last 16 or so years in her witchdom.
That akramul himself was a mafia leader who has murdered many. The meeting was about dispute on splitting the share of profits from drugs amd arms smuggling. The Rab, police and Akram belonged to the same mafia network. Criminals like these always kill each other off.

Nafiz Mohammed Alam, who appeared in this documentary, was arrested in his home on April, 9th. He is now being held in jail in Dhaka, as DW has established.

The BNP Jamaat members who have been reported missing are very low-ranking party members, probably victims of personal disputes in the area. Despite some mistakes of the current government of Bangladesh, no other government has done better than them in the history of Bangladesh, and it has not done so because people do not want to protest against them on the streets.

Germany as a democracy must help reestablish democracy in Bangladesh.
Freedom of speech must be guaranteed; no other law can oversee that. Any law limiting freedom of speech should be removed, or corruption can never end. Unfortunately, there are a lot of laws in Bangladesh that limit freedom of speech and there are people who protest even the death penalty for saying unpopular things ... i.e. limiting freedom of speech.

RAB activities is similar to SARS in Nigeria. The same story. It probably began with good intentions but ends up being hijacked by corrupt people and the officers themselves become corrupt to the extent that taking another person's life means nothing to them.

In many cases, RAB members have been accused of torturing suspects during interrogation, often using methods such as beatings, electrocution, and even waterboarding. There have also been reports of RAB members engaging in extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances, which have been widely condemned by human rights groups.

The situation here in Bangladesh is like this: if you have great power or money, even if you are wrong, you will be considered right; if you don't have either of them, you will be just ignored. Moreover, the thing about taking bribes has become so regular here that it isn't even considered wrong anymore. This country is corrupted from the root.

This extra judicial killing or shootout done by RAB, is famously known as 'crossfire' in Bangladesh. The term 'crossfire' has been branded by RAB authorities and the local media and is considered highly intimidating for the people of Bangladesh.
That was done to instill fear in people's mind so they do not speak against dictator Hasina.

Listen man, I've been seeing some comments about people being afraid of them. Well I know most new generation people aren't, everyone is living like normally. Pretty sure you haven't seen any news of any influencers getting killed by rabs or rabs attacking dhaka. Dhaka is super populated and under surveillance 24/7, if rabs attack anyone in the capital. These extrajudicial killings and disappearances have become a daily occurrence in Bangladesh. After the sanction of the US government on RAB, it is observed that these killings have stopped. No one presents such investigative news in Bangladesh for fear of the Digital Security Act. Al Jazeera had previously published a report on these issues. Every organization in the world has some bad people, an entire organization cannot be debatable with these people. Sheikh Mujib or Zia was killed by some members of the army, does that mean the whole army is bad? In the same way, the whole army cannot be called bad because of a few bad members of the RAB. Islamic militants and drug mafias are afraid because RAB was there.

Some isolated incidents and accidents have been made into stories, this report is not the real Bangladesh. In order to catch 100 thieves, sometimes two good people die by accident, that's how it is. There can be a handful of bad guys out of thousands of members of an army, and fools judge an entire army by them.

RAB was the childhood heroes for 90s kids. Children would dress like them, wear bandana, glasses like them as they idolized this elite force back then. However, it’s a completely different story now. They should have included Narayanganj incident where 7 people were killed. Major General Ziaul Ahsan must get US sanction as he was the mastermind behind this case. This is completely ridiculous as to how he could escape the US sanction. However still US has chance to impose sanction on him.

Did DW intentionally avoid Ekramul Haque's identity? Why did they avoid the fact that he is the leader of Juboleague, a member of the ruling government party? Why would the government go to kill a member of his own party? Why didn't they clarify the fact that it is the personal crime of those Reb officials, and the top leaders of the government have nothing to do with it?

My dad was once taken from his shop by R.A.B who mistook him for someone else because of their similar first name and facial features, like fair skin. Fortunately he was soon released after they realised they got the wrong man.
To this day we still think it is solely luck that he managed to came back home with only a black eye. He hasn’t shared with us what happened with him when he was under R.A.B’s custody
