- In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan asks Donald Trump's senior economic adviser Stephen Moore about "Trumponomics", the US president’s leadership style, and racism.
Trump has made promises to more than double previous economic growth, revive industries like coal, and slash the debt and the deficit. But has he delivered? The national debt is now skyrocketing to levels not seen since World War II and the trade war with China has experts fearing a global recession.
"Trump makes grandiose promises," Moore told Hasan. "He exaggerates and sometimes I wish he wouldn’t do that. But if you compare where the economy is today versus where it was when he entered office, it’s substantially stronger."
Moore, a conservative commentator and economist at the Heritage Foundation, is also an adviser to the Trump 2020 re-election campaign.
He told Hasan he helped write immigration legislation, referring to a bill supported by President Trump and introduced by Republican senators. Moore, however, said he does not agree with some of the government’s positions on immigration.
When challenged on policies limiting legal immigration and the dire situation in migrant detention centres at the US-Mexico border, Moore said conditions in every centre he visited had been humane.
"But I do believe that until we get the border secure and we get that wall built, once we do that, we can increase our legal immigration."
When pressed further on the numerous false statements Trump has made, like needing an ID to buy a box of cereal and suggesting that wind turbines cause cancer, Moore said, "Donald Trump would be better off to stop talking so much and let his record speak for itself".
"What I'm saying is, what Americans care about is his performance, his results, not what he says and how he acts," he added.
This is the first Head to Head episode with an audience recorded in the United States and marks the beginning of a new series. It takes place in front of an audience at the George Washington University in Washington DC.
We are joined by a panel of three experts:
- Tiffany Cross - liberal commentator, co-founder and managing editor of the US news outlet, The Beat DC
- Rick Wilson - former political strategist for the Republican Party, conservative critic of President Trump, and author of Everything Trump Touches Dies
- Jenna Ellis Rives - constitutional lawyer, member of the Trump 2020 Advisory Board, and author of The Legal Basis for a Moral Constitution

It's common decency to allow your guest adequate time to speak before interjecting on top of your voice. If Mehdi Hasan was interviewing me, I would call him out everytime he cut me off or interjected me. I would tell him, cut me off one more time, and I go home, then you can talk as much as you want with yourself. Mehdi needs to go back to school and learn basic interview/debate etiquette.

Don’t be fooled by this guy he’s just throwing out short little facts without allowing meaningful dialogue. As Jordan Peterson says the devil is in the details and everything this is why longform podcast becomes so popular what he’s doing is the equivalent of what MSNBC and CNN do is I just throw out snippets and sometimes are facts and sometimes are not actually but they don’t go deeper into the reasoning or meaning or explanation behind them, so so he takes everything out of context. There is no way on Earth that I would ever debate Mehdi Hasan. This man is too quick thinking, too well prepared and far too professional for me to stand the remotest chance against. How Stephen Moore didn't know what he was getting into by accepting this interview/discussion is beyond me.
And if you listen closely to how he debates, you can actually find that all he's using are his persuasion techniques from his book 'Win Every Argument'. Really good read

The reason CNN may not be able to use the same strategies as this interviewer is because - if CNN did this to its Republican/Trumpian guests, they would refuse to come on CNN (for fear of being embarassed and shot down). This would lead to CNN being more one-sided and biased (similar to how FOX is currently).

Omar A - I can see your point and would agree with you in cases where the guests/debaters actually introduce valid points. Mehdi for the most part uses their own words and positions to dismantle their arguments.
Hellyn Rozenburg Moore didn’t see it coming. 10 mins into the debate I began feeling sorry for the man. you could see how uncomfortable he was getting, stumbling in his speech, anxiety intensifying, contradicting himself and making excuses for his position. It was sad and tough to watch.

I don't think you understood what mehdi's objective was. He was exposing Stephen as a shallow flipflopper who switches opinion based on party/skintone loyalty instead of evidence.
The core problem is that the GOP lack any political substance instead relying on charisma, soundbites etc to woo the crowd...which is an awesome tactic if the crowd want someone charismatic to woo them...but in the brutal world of hardcore politics, you need a strong grasp of political mechanics.
Personally I don't care why the guy flip-flops but don't attend an mehdi hassan interview unless you're fully weaponized with facts, analysis and justifications etc etc for your political and economic positions otherwise you will be forced through an intellectual mincing machine
