How To String Trim Around A Chain Link Fence

  • Sometimes lawn care is all about applying fertilizers and killing weeds but sometimes it's just general maintenance. In this video I took some time over the course of a day to do edge my fence line...from the other side of the fence.
    Trimming along the base of a chain link fence and weeding between the fence and my boulder retaining wall is a job that I always seem to put off for another day...but when I do get the job done I swear my lawn looks so much better, 9 times better in fact, as if no other job could make such a dramatic difference as quickly.

    I appreciate the close ups of how you are doing the trimming.

      I should have also mentioned that the longer the string the easier it is to cut at slow speed. Thanks for watching Chris!

    You haven't been the only one. I finally decided to clean up around my fence yesterday, last time probably was June. Great tips will try them next time

      Yeah, geez it's been WAY too long for me. I did pretty good through Spring then just got so busy when the kids were home from school all day over the summer. I really let it get out of hand. Glad to know it's not just me.

    I got so tired of constantly weed wacking around fence lines and structure perimeters I started spraying pre-emergent in those areas. Not a great fan of herbicides but even less of a fan of scraggly edging. It's good you pointed out the rotation abilities of the head. I bet most people don't know that! 🙂

      Hey Ray, I got your email, looking good over there. For some of my edging I'm actually considering putting in microclover as it will grow up and then just be there, not really needing to be cut back. It should help crowd out weeds but I'm not sure how much. I'm with you on the herbicides and chems; the less the better, hopefully I can find an easier way to deal with the outer edge of the fence in the coming year.

      @@TurfMechanic glad you got the email. I thought maybe you didn't because I got a message as undeliverable and was going to try another way but hadn't got around to it yet. Something else, I have two distinct lime green stripes in the middle of all the green. Any ideas?

      I'll give it a look again and give you a proper response, currently canning tomatoes with the wife so it'll a bit.

    Use hand clippers on the paver end. Push a section of fence in and clip etc

    Or, glyphosate:)

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, that's been awfully tempting this year but I'm still trying to use less chemicals with every passing season. We'll see what I think by Spring, probably start with basic pre-emergents for the weeds, the big problem though are the rhizomes from KBG and the misc field grass that germinates in that space.

      @@TurfMechanic I get it. With Bermuda I didn’t really have a choice sometimes. Crazy aggressive! It would grow in concrete:) Heard about vinegar or citric acid but never tried them. Might be more for weeds rather than grasses.

    • @TurfMechanic
      @TurfMechanic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimshorts5970 im even thinking about concrete, kbg isn't as aggressive as bermuda but concrete is so permanent I'm hesitant to do that too as it stops us from doing flowers bulbs or other ground covers. Old fashioned weeding is probably what I'll do, I won't have a baby on my hands next April so it "should" be easier to find the time.

      @@TurfMechanic Ha ha! I’m sure you will:) Yeah that space looks like a good backdrop for the yard. Could throw a bunch of bulbs in there with different bloom times and have color through the spring then cut em down to weed eat the grass in summer or just leave them for a natural look if the grass doesn’t get too tall. Just trim the fence line with shears:) I just put in around 200 bulbs of 6 or 7 varieties with different colors and bloom times around the edge of the lawn also as a backdrop. Can’t wait to see what happens!
