This is exactly how I've done it for years. I have a few hundred running feet of chain link fencing to deal with, so saving my string is a must!
I was actually looking to see if there was a better head/attachment that would work even more effectively, which is how I found this video.

I do know someone who used to spray plant growth regulator along his chain link property line so he wouldn't have to weed whack it so often...

Spray some quick pro and install a 12” bed along the fence. Mulch it and put in some flowers and you’re good to go.
