How to Upgrade a Hard Drive in a Hardmodded Original Xbox | Xbox TSOP/Modchip HDD Upgrade Tutorial

- This tutorial is designed for hardmodded Xbox users and aims to show you 2 different methods of upgrading your hard drive. If you want to keep your existing configuration while also increasing your storage, the first method will be best for you as it involves cloning your current drive to a new drive using Chimp 261812. The second method is much easier and faster but does not retain or transfer any of your data. This second method simply involves installing a new hard drive in place of your old one and booting up your console with a installation disc in the DVD drive. The disc being used for this tutorial is HeXEn 2018.
Keep in mind the cloning method will require several different pieces of hardware and software, and it does require a "hotswap" meaning you will have to disconnect your DVD drive and connect it to your new hard drive while the console is running. If done properly, everything will be successful, but keep in mind there is a risk of causing physical damage to your hardware if done improperly! This tutorial assumes you are aware of the risks and are willing to proceed.
If you have a softmodded Xbox, do NOT follow this tutorial! Softmodded Xboxes require a slightly different process which is fully detailed in this tutorial.

I use those old xbox drives for rebuilding vintage Windows 9x PC's from time to time. I usually fill the PC with them then load it up with DOS games. Nice video, Thanks.
Great Video, really clear and easy to follow instructions. I just replaced my original HDD with a 500gb one in my 1.6 Xbox after replacing 5 blown capacitors on the motherboard. It brought my crystal Xbox back from the dead!
I used the second method and it worked a charm, many thanks mate. Now to install some emulators and put all my Xbox games onto the HDD :)

One thing I will note: when I started Chimp Loader, my eject button flashed red, yellow, green for a while & then flashed yellow for a long time. I gave up & tried again a few times because I thought something was wrong. It turned out that I just needed to be patient. After starting it again, & pressing A, I went to look into what was wrong. 5-10 minutes later, it finally gave indication that the process was starting & worked normally. This video was helpful though. Thanks.

This video could do with chapter timestamps now that TH-cam supports them. Still a great guide, though. Did a HDD nuke, worked perfectly. Good thing I use Memory Units to save most games :)
It's been almost a year since i gave up my last repair. I've replaced the 5 leaking caps on my 1.6 box and still not turning on after that.
Yesterday I've replaced the caps and now the mod-chip is probably dead, cause when I pull out the chip it's booting fine. (Aladdin XT)
Now I'm waiting for the new mod-chip (Aladdin XT Plus 2) and possibly upgrade the HDD thanks to your guide.
I've got couple of healthy unused IDE drive from office and might experimenting on it.
As for the OG drive, the board blew up in the past, but to my luck, I found the exact same model at my old workplace. The donor drive is dead, but the board was fine. I swapped the board and it works. So i'll just keep the drive as I have a success history with it.
Thank you MrMario!! My v1.6 Maxtor 300gb got the click of death and I bought a used one on eBay to replace it. Used the Hexen 2019 disc to get it back up and running. Thankfully I backed up my previous drive when I first heard the clicking :)

Don't feel like fucking around with your Xbox DVD drive? Maybe want to upgrade to a sata drive on the way?
XboxHDM to the rescue!
Just plug in your empty drive in your PC and boot XboxHDM. Since certain versions of XboxHDM can be booted from USB, you don't even need a DVD.
Prepare your drive as per the instructions (Hopefully MrMario will make a proper tutorial on this soon).
After that just plug the drive into your xbox.
And that's it. It's all done. You can also do this for softmodded consoles IF you have YOUR consoles eeprom.bin (NOTE: It IS console dependant, you can always recover it but it does require some resistors and diodes), but it is much easier on hardmodded systems, since they don't care about HDD locking.
Drive failure forced me to find this video and clone from my original drive. If more games in my collection worked on xbox 360 I wouldn't need this. But thanks for posting this very nice video, easy to follow.

Thank you for reminding this method MR.Mario. i was able to get an SSD 1tb booting up perfectly by cloning from an 500gb sata. One step i was able to just do out of the box was turn on my xbox with both drive attached and turn on. I ran chimp with ease. Boot master and ssd1tb as salve. Didn't have to rush swapping ide cable from dvd to ssd. Hmmm strange 🤔 love your chnl. 😊 take care.

maybe i found part of the reason its not working for some. i was getting stuck at the "connect slave drive then press "a" ". i found that using a oem original corded xbox controller worked, but the logic wireless would not. i did this 3 times back and forth each way to confirm this. doesnt make sense to me as to why but it works for me. i tried the getting this chimp to work probably close to 30 times before i wrote this and i will share some more info. 1 letting the xbox sit doesnt make a change, 2 swapping the ide cable needs to be super fast, like 1.5 seconds, 3 i just launched chimp and as soon as it said to swap i swapped asap, then press a and it worked. mr mario i want to thank you for doing gods work, i have used your videos off and on for years to get an idea of how things work
Great video, but if you're wanting to clone your existing drive wouldn't it be easier flash your bios with one that doesn't check for the DVD drive on boot up? That way you wouldn't have to do the quick ata disconnect/reconnect while the system is on.

Very grateful for this video. I just secured a 1.4 revision XBOX in great condition but it is hardmodded TSOP with EvoX. All I want to be able to do is upgrade the storage space (probably to an SSD with a sata adapter) and run games off the internal storage. Because of you, I was actually able to give a new life to several systems in our home. We actually had two Xboxes, and might both using your method.
However, for the second Xbox ...I'm not exactly sure what happened, but the Xbox keeps thinking that the hard drive that was installed, which was a 1 TB size is less, like 500 GB, and we checked, it is in fact 1TB. It's almost as if the system couldnt recognize a space above 500, but we know that isnt true.
Whenever we would load games onto it using the ethernet crossover cable, they would naturally take up space, ...but when we deleted them, the size would still not recognize the newly opened and available space. It was as if things we try to delete would only be deleted in name only and not in hard drive space. Have you ever seen this before with some of the other systems you have modded, both in the lack of actual hard drive partition or space recognition and the deletion issue? The first system we modded it works perfectly! I wish you had more FAQ videos, because we've tried to look at the forums to no resolve on this issue. 😭
I haven't personally run into that, I've installed 1 TB and 2 TB drives with no issues? Although I used custom BIOS that had F and G drive support, then I think I split F and G partitions to 500 GB or so? It has been a while, but I've been able to successfully do it.

I will try your method by perhaps restarting, or looking at the drive through a computer over a lan connection, or reloading in the software (?) If the software has a problem refreshing on space readout, it could be a something within the software now, which, I know isn't frequent, since it's not the Operating System, just the software. We'll see.
@@MrMario2011 I think I understand what exactly is going on: When I try to delete games from my hard drive using DVD2Xbox (I'd imagine any app works that offers deletion) they do disappear from the Xbox, but the "F" drive still continues to show no space on the main dashboard that is on most of your video. It just continues to read "0 MB Free". If the software doesn't detect deletions, and won't let me upload new games, I am guessing this is a software problem, and that UnleashX has to be updated/reinstalled. I am using an Original Xbox with a Xenium chip (works great), and (actually) a 750GB drive that installed, I think my brain was thinking of my other Xbox that has a 1TB (THAT one works great!)
If you have a solution for those of us that delete games, but don't have the Xbox recognizing new, open space on the F Partition, that would be *greatly* appreciated! Thank you, Mr Mario!
An update and request for any videos you have on this!: my harddrive is 750 GB, but only shows space left equivalent to less than 250 GB, it's actually as if all that extra space isnt being recognized. To avoid any confusion, i would love to watch a video on resetting my xbox to start over, making sure my HD is truly back at it's 750GB hd space! Do you have any videos on recovering the xbox back to it's basic, Xenium Modded, blank 750GB drive state? I'm guessing you're gonna say Hexen? I tried burning a 2.4x philips dvd+r and placed it in, no luck. Would be happy to continue watching any of your videos for a solution!!! Thank you, Mr Mario! 🙏🏻
Hello MrMario, thank you for the excellent tutorial. I'd like to ask if you know, as I've looked everywhere and couldn't find an answer, is there a way to upgrade the hdd without a working dvd drive? These are next to impossible to find in a working condition. My system is hardmodded with EvoX and there are several dashes available in my stock 10gb original xbox hdd. Thanks a lot!
can i put and hacked hard drive on a xbox who never get hacked plz just anser this i fear to my hacked hard drive will be erase or something if i plug it in a non modded xbox

Definitely keeping the original drive for a back up. You just never know 👨🔧🤷♂️ would keep it locked too, hard mod could possibly get screwed up as well and need to remove it from the system, if it does then you’re left with a broken hard modded Xbox with no drive to boot to 😵
I have managed to upgrade my harddrive using Chimp FTP over (My DVD Drive is not reading). I have a X2 Hardmod. However, after upgrading, in the UnleashX, XBPartitioner, Chimp, all is able to see the F drive, but I am unable to see it on FTP, both using the Ed@Chip FTP and UnleashX FTP. I'm using Filezilla FTP client. I can see all other drives, C/E/X/Y/Z but not F or G.
I booted up the Xbox, I unplugged the DVD drive at the dashboard and it was fine :)

Hi Mr mario. Thank you for this tutorial. I've been trying to get 3 xboxs working on sata ssd/hdd with only 1 working dvd and your clear tutorial had given me great understanding of the process. I'm wondering if you have any experience with older mod chips from the early 2000. I'm able to boot hexen 2018 with the original hdd but when I swap the old hdd to a new sata ssd or hdd, the boot refused to recognise the new hdd and instead spews out errors 7, 13 and 16 on numerous attempts. I can't seem to get it to recognize the new hdd and prompt for formating. Could it be the mod chip was of the older version and won't recognise new hdd nor have a formatting function? Is it because of hdd lock which I doubt since the hardmod should bypass hdd locking? Thank you again. 😊 Happy holidays and new year.
Forgot to mention, all are 1.6 ver and all are restored with new time cap, the dreaded 5 and thermal paste. Mod chip of aladdin variant and one is unknown with Fujitsu printed on the chip.
I haven't used OLD chips like that but hrm... Is the BIOS a bit too outdated on it? Might be that?

Hello Mr, I used the second method (also with a 250gb drive) but the F partition only shows 123gb of space on the dashboard and apps like the DVD2Xbox). It shows the full space if I boot the Hexen disc.
Well the solution was to flash my bios with an updated one.
For the cloning, if your putting in a SATA drive do u swap the the 80 wire ribbon before starting the process?

Damn, I've probably bought wrong adapter. Fresh install setup won't boot, but ChimpX detects drive when it's set as slave and I can even clone it. Problem is, it will still not work when installed as master. Adapter doesn't have capacitors, so it's probably wrong one. I will try once more, but this time I will power HDD externally.

I ran into a few problems though.
I bought the 80 pin ide cable from ebay but the connectors are positioned in such a way I can't fold them like the original and have to make really awkward folds to make it fit.
Secondly, but that is that my xbox dvd drive doesn't seem to read discs anylonger, also the drive doesn't want to open, already replaced the belt but nothing seem to help.
The last thing is obviously not your concern, I guess I have to find a replacement drive.

hi, new to your channel but I have learnt so much from your tutorials and recently revisited an original xbox i modded years ago and then stored away, i have cleaned it all up removed the clock capacitor and now installed a 500GB HDD 80 wire ide but now looking to flash the bios...so is it safe to do this if I've all ready upgraded the HDD??
i'm confused. once i tsop flashed my console, i just unplugged my old hard drive and plugged the new one in, then turned it on.

Mr Mario, I'm going to hard mod a softmodded xbox that I got off ebay, because I went and unlocked the harddrive so I have the 05 error, as the hard drive has lots of xbox games and emulators etc, do I just put it in and turn machine on without using hexen, as I don't want to format the hard drive, many thanks for any information.

Thanks, I was able to put in a 320 GB SATA Laptop Hard drive.
After all the standard partition stuff, I was left with about 290 GB which I dedicated all to the F drive. However, in the dashboard and game transfer tools it only sees 128 GB. Is there a fix for this?
My Xbox is a 1.6 with Aladdin 4032 installed (with its default bios) and all the Hexen procedures followed from your excellent video. Keep up the great work man!
You need to increase the size of your partition within XBPartitioner.
@@MrMario2011 Upon launch, XBPartitioner says my bios does not support custom partition sizes. I may need to upgrade bios.

So, serious question. A couple months ago, I got my first OG Xbox. It wasn't modded at all when I got it, but I have since done a soft mod and removed the clock cap. My question is, since you mentioned startup videos, what does it mean if my Xbox doesn't play a startup video? Like, at all? Black screen from power on until dashboard? I am using composite cables, if that could be the cause.
Could mean you have a TV that takes a while to display the input. If you hook it up to any old CRT, you should see the boot animation.
If I have a softmoded Xbox with a 320gb hdd and I want a physical chip , can I only install the chip with out messing with the hard drive ? Or do I have to do the formatting hexen process ? Thanks in advance for the info . I love your videos
If you hardmod your system your softmod will no longer boot up, the console will just boot to a black screen after BIOS. You will need to redo your drive or remove your softmod whichever way you prefer to.

Another cuestión I just bought a Xbox with the physical chip it has a 250 gb looks that it used to be an arcade machine ,it boots into a unleashX with a skin that only show the game list, when I boot into safe mode it's the same , it also doesn't let me fttp it doesn't even show an ip. I'm able to go into file explorer, is it true that if I delete the config.xlm and restart unleashx will create a default xlm and It will show everything normal ? Thanks in advance
I followed these steps to upgrade to a 1tb hdd. I already have a modchip. But when i did the clone, i had a G drive and it was split half n half with F drive. So i went onto the partition app and merged it all to F drive. Now one problem i am having is when i try to boot the xbox into the normal MS dash, i get a green error screen saying it needs a service. But if i go into the modded dash and select go to MS dash, it will go back to the original dash that way. Also my game saves explorer on the modded dash disappeared too. I ripped forza to the hdd using dvd2xbox and it worked fine. When i tried ripping toca race driver, it had a hard time tryna read the disc and came up as video the first time round and unknown the 2nd time. If i boot the xbox up into the modded dash from off, it loads the game no probs. But in dvd2xbox i had to let it sit for ages before it recognised it. Somethings off about this clone. It also said my original hdd was locked as well, but i still cloned it anyway. Could this be the problem. I also switch back to the original ide cable as it seemed to look like it was working. Could this be the problem? Do i need to use the 80 core cable? I'm so confused as to what's gone wrong and i've ended up leaving it for now as the ide to sata board is very cheap and fragile. Already had to fix the sata connector as it ripped it off the board as it was so flimsy. All the pins was put back correctly.
I believe one of the Toca games has some issues running from HDD, there's some workarounds for it.
As for MS Dash, you won't be able to boot it on a retail BIOS if you have an unlocked HDD. That's why you're able to boot it through a modified dashboard.
Hey Mario, if I'm in Region PAL, but mainly want to play NTSC games on my hardmodded system should I still use "New Disk, Pal Xbox" or can I use "New Disk, NTSC Box" as well when setting up Hexen with a new drive?
I haven't worked on a PAL Xbox, but I believe there's a separate setting for PAL consoles to unlock HD resolutions, which will adjust the EEPROM itself to operate like a NTSC console.

I just used your tutorial video to upgrade my HD. Something is weird though in XBPartitioner it shows F: 458.31GB free but on the dashboard it only says 200 GB something free and not the 458.31GB I actually have. Anyway im gonna send my old HD to PSA and get it graded.
Do you still recommend Hexen 2018 for the Installation Disk? Or would the latest version of OGXbox Installer be better?
That was the latest one at the time, newer discs are going to be better.

Why couldn't you?
How big is it? As long as it isn't above 1TB you should be okay. 1TB to 2TB tends to be iffy from what I heard.

@@JorgeHernandez-gq6yy it should work. I've seen people who have used a modern SATA SSD on an old Windows 98 machine using one of those adapters and an 80 pin IDE cable. You should be fine.
The compatibility list doesn't matter for hardmodded consoles, which is why I didn't link or reference it.

Please help me, i can't find any good answer. I hear 2TB is the max of a disk, BUT if it do manage to use a 2tb it should be able to use a 4tb. Can i use a 4tb drive, as long as i divide the partitions with 1tb per partition?

Install the Aladdin, pop in a hard drive, and nuke it with a recovery disc. Otherwise you could pull each console EEPROM and then build a locked hard drive on a PC with XboxHDM.

If the second console is softmodded, the EEPROM containing the HDD key must be the same across both systems. If the second console is hardmodded, unlock the HDD and it will most likely work, although depending on the custom BIOS it might not play nicely with a softmod installed on the HDD.
What I'm saying here is you have a few options, but if you don't want to lose all the work you put into your 2 TB, I'd personally image it to another drive and then play around with that one. That way you have the same setup on 2 consoles, but if anything goes wrong you don't lose all your data on a single drive.
@MrMario, help!! I have an OpenXenium, 2tb drive and a StarTec adapter. I've setup an new HDD and installed the basic apps all the dashboards through True Hexen 2021 per the locations the program designates. The problem I'm having is I can only see the F and G partitions when in True Hexen, they disappear if I go to a dashboard like Xleash and will not boot to dashboards in the F partition. Its like it is booting to quick for them to populate. I do have them enabled on the dashboards.
(Second method problem) why xbmc and unleashx shows that i have only 120gb free space on F drive when i installed 500gb hdd? also HeXEn (main menu) and partitions app (from HeXEn disc) on the other hand shows about 450+ free space. Also when im opening partitions app from xbmc (not the hexen disc) then im greeted with big Warning:

i have 2 xboxes. one is hard modded with a chameleon chip, the other is soft modded. i am trying to do the hexen disc method on the hard modded console, but it appears that both of my drives have crapped out. is there any way to do this through the PC or by installing chimp on the HDD to clone or even just format the drive for my xbox? the hard modded xbox already has an upgraded drive, but i want a bigger one as 80GB just isnt enough.

I hope this helps someone. Don't use the original xbox IDE cable. It does not jive with the IDE/SATA connector. If you go to the X3 Config dash and it show no free space on your partitions after you partition using the X3 bios. Its the cable.
I believe I mentioned this if you're going to a SATA drive?
My original softmodded hard drive died and unfortunately I can't build a new one with the USB-IDE adapter, keep getting errors. If I hard mod my original Xbox, would I be able to use the hexen disc to build a new one?
need help with a TSOP'd X2, ordered the parts linked and using a verified compatible 1TB WD drive and my xbox locks up every time i hotswap...
update: used my startech adapter and it worked, first try.

Help! I was trying to hotswap it but now my xbox is stuck in an Evo-X menu where all I can do is reboot, shut down, go to settings, backup, and flash the BIOS.
I’ve got an xecuter 3 mod chip , after I’ve done the above , it reboots into an x3 config screen and not the dash ?

Mine is hard modded but it came out of an arcade stick and a red wire is loose. Will this cause an issue? Believe it's xcuter. Also missing the disk drive as it was set as an arcade stick. And its stuck in Spanish
I have an older softmodded xbox with a 750g harddrive in it, is it possible to add this hard drive to a hard modded xbox that I have. I want to upgrade the 750g xbox to a 2 TB...I think I can just use chimp loader for both of these but I guess the fact that they're modded differently is confusing me....Thx any help!

Should I use the X2 4983 BIOS if I'm thinking about upgrading my ram in the future? Is it that much different from the EVOX BIOS?

How do you get XBMC on it? It keeps getting stuck on the splash screen everytime I try to install it. Its driving me nuts!!
i tried it with a 40 pin and a 80 pin IDE cable. there will be no benefits in speed. the ide controller on the xbox is crap it does not manage to appearently go over 80mbit really, so ATA133 will pretty much do nothing.
so my xbox is equiped with a sata ssd. its not faster, but the mechanical stuff is gone.

Technically, yes? You could build a hard drive with the stock files using something like FATXplorer.

hey Mario. what is the advantage of leaving the hard drive unlocked on a hard modded Xbox? why not lock it? and if you disable the chip then you get an error 05. so why leave it unlocked?
Not all drives can be locked, so all drives will work unlocked on a hardmodded console.
Hey so I upgraded a 2 terabyte SATA to a 4 TB SATA just by cloning it with the third party device everything seems to have worked fine except the extra 2 terabytes are missing. Any idea how I recover them? I checked XB partitioner and it only has the original two terabytes from the original Drive..
Use XBPartitioner to expand the partitions.
My Xbox refuses point blank to accept a new hard drive, I brought the startech ide to SATA as I read this worked perfectly with the Xbox trouble is if I connect the original hard drive to my Xbox it boots the Hexen 2021 DVD perfect however if I put my new hard drive in then it refuses to boot from the disk, the ring light goes red like its working but then nothing happens, I've tried with 4 different hard drives each different sizes and I've even burnt the DVD off using 3 different burning speeds but I just can't get it to boot from the DVD with any other hard drive attached. I know the ide to SATA is working because I hear the new hard drive spin up and there's a light on my xecuter 2.6 board that flashes when the hard drive is being accessed but like I said the ring light goes red and just stays there.
btw my xecuter 2.6 is flashed with evox m8+, tried both the standard bios version and the noDVD bios version and it doesn't make any difference. also tried to use my PC to clone my hard drive but for some reason, HDD raw copy tool, mini portion tool, etc won't see the drive I'm trying to copy. I'm on windows 10 x64 version 21h2 (os build 19044.1766). literally pulling my hair out at the minute.
since my hdd is dead, even with my hardmoded xbox , and the new hdd with the adaptor to sata and the hexen disc inside, i keep getting error 07. Any ideas? :/
im guessing the hd was locked. can you still get to the normal screen without the hexan disk? ie will it boot up as normal just not work or does it just error out? if its erroring the system is likely lost thats the biggest issue with the og xbox is if the hd isnt unlocked and teh hd dies the system is about scrap
@@GalironRunner on the hardmoded Xbox i found the solution. The IDE to SATA adapter caused a circuit on the original hdd. So i bought a new adapter and a new hdd (the other probably got circuit too). After changing both hdd and adapter the xbox powered up and works perfectly after this. Now i am facing a different problem since the same happened on my softmoded xbox , so now the original hdd is dead and although i have the eeprom zeroed and saved I can't build a new hdd with the key. Any ideas how to build one?

Neither hotswap or chaning DVD drive to Slave Drive after the Chimp was started did nothing.
I was forced to go with the second option.
i am having issues also. im stuck at the please connect slave drive press a to continue screen.
How do you get those IDE cables to fit? I have found that they are backwards and too short to stretch across to my adapter board. The ones that work best for me are the round cables with the individual wires in them, I usually will remove the shielding and then they plug in and work just fine.
You have to fold it a few weird ways.
