You kids and your modchips. Back in 2005 we would just use a memory card, one of 3 games, and crossover ethernet cable to connect the PC to the Xbox and run modding software from that. Didn't need no fancy custom BIOS, we just used a slightly modified vanilla homescreen and the built in HDD for storage.
@@PhurPher Well, you obviously didn't follow the scene back then. Modchips for the OG Xbox were extremely popular due to significant advantages over a softmod; there are like a hundred variants from dozens of developers, because they sold like hot cakes. "We" also didn't use a "slightly modified vanilla homescreen"; many of us used XBMC (initially called XMP; still in active development as Kodi).

This thing literally saved my Xbox that would not boot without a modchip (for some reason), the previous one broke (one of those cheap alladin clones) and the thing sat on a box for years Now it's going strong with cerbios and tons of games ❤
Iirc, part of an Xbox's boot code is stored on the IDE hard drive. These hard drives are paired to a motherboard with a password stored in the EEPROM. If the drive's password isn't wiped by a modchip, the hard drive can only be used by a motherboard that passes the correct password. If you don't have a mod chip or your Xbox dies, you can recover the hard drive's password with FATXplorer 3.0 beta 31 or later...if it's a Western Digital disk.

The X3 chip I installed in 2005 was the last chip I ever needed. However, I took it out to sell when a collector made an obscene offer for it. I put a Jafar in it’s place and that’s the last chip I’ll ever need. You make a strong case here though. If I ever open my console again, I’ll solder a ribbon cable to the pin header and D0 and run it through a vent, and double-sided tape whatever modchip to the top of the case :D
This is incredible. I won't be dismantling my xecuters but this is perfect for those lost souls you find in goodwill shops with bad hard drives that code on boot.
Your soldering music sounds like what you'd hear in a 1980s Garfield TV show 😂 This looks really promising. Once I get around to "re"-modding my OG Xbox, I had planned on a Project Stellar for the HDMI and hopeful future capability of native wireless controller support, but this is one I'll be keeping an eye out for too now.
Both my XBoxes are already modchipped, but it's nice to see alternative with open source projects that can be perpetuated by someone else even if the original creator abandons the project.
Pro Tip - Add flux to your desoldering braid and you probably wont need to use your pump as often. That combo would have sucked all the solder out of those holes.
The Xbox modding scene continues to amaze me even this far removed from the Xbox's launch. Using a Pico as a modchip is very clever. I wonder if that method can be used on PS3s and 360s as well, with a different implementation and the specific software for those systems of course.
If the community can come up with a way to pair a hard drive to the system without running a burnt disc with homebrew on it (ala Project Stellar) this might be the one for me. My OG Xbox has been out of commission for over a decade because it needs a new power supply, new HDD/SDD, and at the time it needed a new DVD drive to be able to run the app to pair the drive. Apparently you can use any old PC DVD drive with a modded console minus the ability to run original disks (a feature I DON'T need) but it would be great if I didn;t have worry about burning discs at all. As it stands I;ve been procrastinating on buying project stellar because of the price but if ModXo can do the same AND is cheap because it;s running on a Pico, this is the one. Getting a HDD/SDD is dead simple and getting a power supply shouldn't be too hard. The DVD drive was the worst part of the repair because price but if I can just remove it from the equation completely, that would be great. At that point I don't really have any excuses left to procrastinate on getting this thing FINALLY fixed. Edit: 15:59 "Such as Hard Drive set up" SCOOOOOOORRRREEEEEEE! This is the one for me. Hell I already have a regular Pico, but I'll probably just grab a Tiny and a carrier board. that way I don;t have to manually add all the bitty resistors. Either way though, I might wait for the Prometheos port to have a little more time in the oven, but this is EXACTLY what I wanted. Cheap AND can set up storage without a burnt disc.
As someone who has 2 xboxs that need full replacements of the Hard Drive, and since its apparently just easier to mod in a sata hdd/ssd, this felt like a message from above. The pico being cheaper than older mod chips really calls to me.

Oh yeah I really can’t wait for this one to take off. The OG Xbox is really where modding was exposed to me. Not to mention, the Xbox was probably one of the most extensively modded consoles of the era.
Im so happy we're in the generation where new technology is helping old technology keeping up ... we have psp on ras and now xbox on ras nintendo Switch on ras. This raspberry is such a life saver for these old technologies !!!
I currently have my og xbox, that I bought in 2003 running xecuter 2.3b lite + 2Tb + Noctua fan... Also I have 5 other og xbox's ready for modding. Now a days the way to go was Xenuim, but those cost at least 45€ per piece here, so I just ordered couple of those Rasperry Picos for 5€ a piece to test this mod. I think this ModXo is going to be a gamechanger for xbox modding.
While I have never owned the 2001 version of Xbox (Original Xbox), It's nice to see this console get a modchip that could be the "Be All, End All" for using the hardware on this console to its fullest potential...But of course, years down the road another one will improve over the old one so.
This is awesome, especially if it allows for a relatively uncomplicated harddrive swap. Even the newer harddrives in the old Xbox are comming up on their 20th birthday, their lifecycles are definitely nearing the end. And with the harddrive gone, you need a cheap, relatively uncomplicated method to put in a new one, and Chinese pico clones are less than $5 each.
What would it take to build a system that would run its self or 3 other system at ones the computing of 3 raspberry pies one for each system and maybe a special type of raspberry pies in its self , but build a system that will run 3 gaming system rather with it's own optics and peramiders and graffitics or share its naboring systems software, making a machine that will be something Intyerly new enhancing each system in it's own rather by memory, internet, or graphics
Bought a wireless transmitter for n64 controller from Retro Fi and it's using a raspi nano. Two of my hitboxes are also using a 2040. Really impressive what raspi did. It's cheap and available. Amazing hw. ☮️
I'm looking forward to seeing LCD/OLED screen support for those that don't want to find rare and costly Xecuter chips and screens. The only con I see with the Pi Pico is future updates requiring reconnecting the chip via USB.
I already have everything needed. I also like that this does not use any Windows specific software. Considering I used to install modchips into the Wii and Xbox 360 without any kind magnification I think this is very beginner friendly.
I cant wait to see what becomes possible once PrometheOS on modxo hits its stride. This is only the beginning, and theres a lot of room for interesting features that werent really possible before. Long live the Xbox scene!
Man, this is so much easier than my mod chip from the first year that the console was released. It had something like 35 wires to solder in. I was working at a computer show and found a guy that said he would mod it for me overnight so I ran to Best buy and bought one.
This is awesome! I'll probably be installing this to all my 3 og xboxes (two of which I'll probably gift to my brother and a friend if someone wants it). Hopefully we can also get fully open internal hdmi mod. Honestly mostly because I'm really not a big fan of MakeMHz.
Would love to see this mod chip make chihiro conversions easier. Being able to switch between home console and arcade functionality would be absolutely huge
something not many people seem to do is solder the d0 motherboard wire to the chassis of the console (instead of console to chip) - it will do the same thing and not need to be removed if you remove the chip for maintenance or any other reason. d0 just tells the console to boot form the LPC header when grounded.
Hmm? If you remove the chip with D0 permanently grounded, your console won't boot. Wiring to the chip is fine, and allows the chip to control D0 so you can boot from the TSOP if needed.
@@GoTeamScotch yea, but it's easier to resolder/desolder the d0 to the case than the chip. Just a trick I use. Of course you have to disconnect d0 from ground if you want to boot from the tsop
I may not want an xbox but I think a cool project that might extend switch or other consouls is to add a usb port so people can either plug in external harddrives or memory sticks so you can load downloaded games to a high compacity flash drive or external hard drive.

RP2040 has became popular not only because it is widely available and cheap, but also that it uses PIO that has 8 state machine to emulate many real-time protocols
I've been waiting for the perfect mod for the OGXB, so much potential inside that box, q chipset that adds native VGA & HDMI, with 240p, 480p, 720p native rendering modes, and 960p and 1440p integer line double or pixel repetition scale modes, I'd love to see 3:2 or 16:10 aspect modes too. But the potential for adding the ability to use Live CD versions of Windows 98Se for instance, if the mod unlocks the ability to install more RAM, this single weak spot of the OGXB, this would make the OGXB the perfect classic PC gaming machine, given the Xbox not only has a really nice PIII 733Mhz (upgradeable to 1.4Ghz Copermine I believe), but that Nvidia GF3 GPU makes any PC game playable up to around 2002 or so (the NV2A ASIC is closer to GF4 performance, or say GF3.5), and best of all, the OGXB has absolute powerhouse sound hardware, aka the Nvidia Soundstorm, has full real-time hardware MIDI synth capabilities with soundfont/soundbanks support, meaning all those classic MIDI PC games would be compatible, it also has full HRTF for EAX and A3D games, and everything can be encoded in real-time in Dolby Digital surround, it also has a powerful audio DSP, 256 stereo sound channels, and a beautiful quality Wolfson DAC, they went hard with the Xbox sound hardware, an d the Soundstorm completely outclasses modern audio capabilities (or lack of them), if only Nvidia carried on making sound cards, or better yet, incorporated all that audio tech into their GPUs. The OGXB is already the best place to play multiplats of that generation, but being able to also turn it into a powerful retro PC would be incredible, being able to use all that hardware to play all your favourite PC exclusives with reference video & audio quality would be amazing, and there is the fact that Xbox has some of the best 8/16-Bit console soft emulation available with very little latency thanks to the fast analogue DAC, if the OGXB could get the Amiga PiStorm style upgrade treatment, to give it at least 256MB DDR RAM, an SSD drive, the OGXB Southbridge has PCI that could be exploited to that end.
If you drive the EN pin low on the TSOP, the system will look for a compatible flash device on the LPC bus instead to read the 2bl from which then loads the kernel. The simplest modchip was just one of those TSOP's in a different package, this is also why for up to v1.5 it was quite easy to simply flash the onboard TSOP with the BIOS you needed. I never owned a v1.6 back then, but I have one rusting away somewhere :D You actually do not need a modchip at all, you can easily get it to boot into Linux to flash the onboard TSOP via known exploits and just be done with it. I have never tried a USB PATA controller to access the drive, but you can hotswap the hard drive IDE cable at the right time to have it unlocked for another PC to access it as long as the XBOX powers it. But hey, it is 2024 and you can probably bruteforce or generate the unlock password these days in mere seconds. But my memories of this old beast are also very foggy from way back when I still studied electronics, I might still have old code somewhere on spinning rust in a shoebox and I should really dust off the two xboxes I still have to replace that capacitor... the third one I have is sadly exposed to the elements :(
I might be wrong now I think about it, there are two points you can reach from the side with tweezers that is the write enable on the TSOP. In case you wanted a "modchip", the single line you pull to ground is one of the data lines as this will cause the 2bl to read the kernel from the LPC bus instead. But like I said before, you do not need a modchip for these systems at all. You can just flash the TSOP from Linux with flashrom on everything that is not v1.6.
The OG XBOX modchip scene has been stagnant for many years, primarily due to how easy it is to softmod the console. Now, with other mods being developed that require a hardmod (like Cerbios), demand for something other than the old Aladdin clones has picked up. Thanks to the community!
Man people who create open source projects are really a god send to the community

Why should I do this over a TSOP flash which doesn't really cost anything?
Wondering the same? Other than v1.6, obviously, which can't be TSOP'd.
Agreed and waiting for valid responses.
You can’t flash Prometheos to a TSOP either. You’re then limited to only one bios, which is fine for a lot of ppl.
1.0 and 1.1 models have 1Mb bios chips that can have their banks split. @@Dikwili
Excited to give this a go! Liked and subbed! 🎉
Nice, maybe I'll get an Xbox now. Hopefully the PS2 gets some Pico love as well.
Bought a wireless transmitter for n64 controller from Retro Fi and it's using a raspi nano. Two of my hitboxes are also using a 2040. Really impressive what raspi did. It's cheap and available. Amazing hw. ☮️
I can't wait for more info in the future.
Thats pretty sick. A long time a go we did the hot swap mod on our xbox.
Man, this is so much easier than my mod chip from the first year that the console was released. It had something like 35 wires to solder in. I was working at a computer show and found a guy that said he would mod it for me overnight so I ran to Best buy and bought one.
This is gonna change the game for all systems.
Ive been wondering when a Pico mod would come out for the OG xbox, its such a capable little SOC that has changed console mods forever.
Subscribed just for the sick transitions
Man the pico can do anything at this point
This is awesome! I'll probably be installing this to all my 3 og xboxes (two of which I'll probably gift to my brother and a friend if someone wants it). Hopefully we can also get fully open internal hdmi mod.
Honestly mostly because I'm really not a big fan of MakeMHz.
First the GameCube, now the Xbox...
What can't the Pi Pico do?!
Xbox 360 as well! Not as a mod chip but a flasher!
Don’t forget the Switch.
They could make for the PS2. It would be great
There's a PS1 Pico based ODE as well.
You can also use it for controller firmware (GP2040-CE) if you wanna build your own controller!
1:36 - Why is Robin Williams on the back of that chip? 😂
Would love a video with an actual standard pico since it's in the thumbnail...
Tito and Voultar's videos are my therapy.
this couldn't have come a better time for me, just got an og xbox gifted to me thats been sitting since its hayday lol
This is fantastic! I can now mod my 8 consoles without much effort or money cost.
That is truly a game changer! 🤩
I may not want an xbox but I think a cool project that might extend switch or other consouls is to add a usb port so people can either plug in external harddrives or memory sticks so you can load downloaded games to a high compacity flash drive or external hard drive.

en that flying xbox editing is crazy, how did you do that?

RP2040 has became popular not only because it is widely available and cheap, but also that it uses PIO that has 8 state machine to emulate many real-time protocols
Very much, the PIOs are what’s allowing this to work in the first place without needing an FPGA or CPLD…
I never owned a v1.6 back then, but I have one rusting away somewhere :D
You actually do not need a modchip at all, you can easily get it to boot into Linux to flash the onboard TSOP via known exploits and just be done with it.
This couldn’t be more wrong. The last couple of years have been amazing for mod chips and hardware upgrades. You’ve just not been paying attention.
@Dikwili on the one hand, fair. On the other, having a much more easily accessible and affordable option definitely should not be discounted
Ok, let’s see what we have here
I need this. Remember my first mod (soft) forgot about the floating ground. Pop 🎉
5:50 alright so nothing out of the ordinary on this silkscreen
Finally got my parts in and im building one from scratch and the github repo
Man, I'm eager to see PromOS running on the Modxo. More so if there's a way to chain-flash uf2s to run Cerbios along PromOS.
Sounds like that's the plan with PromOS. Using it to boot into other BIOSes, including Cerb.
