It boot the xbox normal intro and then goes "bright black screen" (no dark black screen). Any suggestions please? Thank you.
So to retiterate what said below, seems my IDE cable has to be in super tight or issues, both old 40 wire one and new 80 wire Im trying...finally got it to work and bending the new 80 wire from link is nightmare- plus my SATA adapter has big molex splitter hanging off unlike yours, along with splitter I need for LCD temp monitor- ohh boy I dread putting this back. But issue now, I go to do chimp loader and...Xbox turns off. This is my 1.0 remember, I think its something I remember about needing composite cables hooked up?! Bizzare as sounds, I use high def component/SPDIF cable...gotta try and find old shitty cables now, hope thats issue.
Heads up, don't have to let it sit on the dash like we used to. With this version of chimp you can load it up and do the hot swap right after chimp checks the DVD drive.
why is my system turning off immediately after unplugging the IDE cable? There is an in human amount of time between unplugging and the system turning off. Not 2-4 seconds like everyone says.
@@JMKGalaxy2 no idea what is causing that. Have never had it happen. I load chimp, wait like 5 secs, and then hot swap the ide cable out of the dvd drive and into the new hard drive and then proceed

Same thing was happening to me and I noticed the original Xbox hard drive jumper was set to "cable select". Switching it to "master" resolved the issue
Great video, but I wasn’t sure about the pros and cons of having the different hard drive partitions sized differently. Presumably certain partitions are usually used for different tasks? What’s the advantage of having F take up most space?
Any tips on routing the power cable using the startech sata to ide adapter? You use a different one than the one in your link and i am having hard time getting top back on because of how lengthy and bulky the power cable is. When i plug power from motherboard it doesnt give me any good routing options
great video! weird question.. i have a spare 120 hhd already check and its compatible but might be from an old ps3. do i have to get it wiped first? or will the xbox clone right over it?
I've yet to mod mine (waiting on parts) but I was thinking of the method you did, can you basically just put all games on the F partition (for example) or do they need to be on C or another one for example? Also its been 3 months since you did this video, did you have any issues creating just F and not F & G in terms of adding games or any other kind of issue (i'm new af to Xbox modding). And while I'm jumping the gun, I like to have a rough idea on what to do before I start doing it xD
Games/Homebrew should all go into extended partitions like F or G. C is for the original Dash and system files, E if for game saves and DLC, music etc. It can be used for games and homebrew but it is limited to about 4 gigs. Typically a custom dash gets installed here with a launcher found in C. Then a number of cache partitions are available for games to use for various purposes. But to answer that second part, I haven't had any issues with using just F!
Hey I’m having trouble with my v1.6 softmodded xbox. I can’t boot past the Xbox wallpaper with stock hdd & 80 wire cord to start chimp(sometimes “Microsoft” will show up if I mess with the disc drive). Should I be able to use my Xbox normally with just swapping to 80 wire cord? Is it a cord problem? It works perfectly fine on stock cord.
So I learned a few things that may help someone else, 1. If you use a 3rd party controller, chimp freezes. 2. I used a different IDE2SATA and it did not work, the one in the video did work.
One thing about my 1.6 Xbox that I haven't seen mentioned. After doing the hot swap my Xbox would freeze before I could get into chimp. I noticed the original hard drive jumper was set to "cable select". I assume all the 1.6 seagate drives are set this way. Switching the jumper to "master" resolved the issue.
Maybe u know the answer to this. So I upgraded my HDD. To a 1 tb. Followed your video. But I seem to only have 120gb available. I chose f uses all available space. Any ideas?
My xbox with xbox4gamers and a evo x aladdin modchip flashes orange once i load chimp and press A with no change in the screen. I am using the startech recommended hdd convert board for my slave. Neither drive wants to load in Fatxplorer, so I was attempting this method. Any suggestions?
Hey there my dude, I really appreciate the video and I'm trying to follow it. I've done everything up to the point where you're supposed to hot-swapping the IDE cable. I let the Xbox sit on the dashboard for a few minutes as you say, then do the swap, but then when I try to select anything on the menu at that point, it won't work. What do you think the problem is and what can I do about it? I'd greatly appreciate your input!! (if it means anything, I have Rocky5's menu installed for my dashboard)
@@ArchadesGames Oh, looks like the problem was either the SATA converter I was using was bad OR I needed to switch to the new pin connector. Either way, I got it to work!
So, I'm in the process and then you say that you are going to go to your applications menu and I see an menu that isn't showing on my Xbox and I am suddenly lost! Where did that menu come from!

So I've done everything you said when I get too Chimp to check if both HDD are recognizable somehow my slave drive is not recognizable. I'm pretty sure it's because I'm using the stock ide cable given with the Xbox. If I'm wrong what could be the problem. Thanks

I have the configuration set to master and when I press the eject button nothing happens. Games wont boot, just black screen for eternity. When I put in original hard drive it boots up to my dashboard no problems. Any ideas???
Ok I get to where it is cloning process but about 75% complete then it gives me hda not ready for command and then it severely slows down data transfer speed to kib/s then stops at 80%. How do I fix?

Cant wait to get a bigger hdd as well. Thanks for this video. Gives me a lot more confidence. I haven't touched an IDE cable since my pentium 4 era celeron dell desktop lol
I’ve tried every way I can think of to go about this but no matter what I do as soon as I fully plug the IDE cable into the Startech adapter it shorts and the Xbox shuts off. I got it done one time but Chimp couldn’t unlock the hard drive or I would have done it the first time. Anyone else have this issue?
Had some weird experience with a StarTech IDE-to-SATA adaptor, at least on my particular 1.6 OG Xbox. I launch the console, it works fine. I turn it off and try to launch it again, I get the error screen. Some time passes, I launch the console, it works fine. Basically, any immediate attempts to power on the Xbox after the initial boot always result in the error screen. Some time has to pass. However, soft resets from the main menu work fine. A cheaper, Chinese adaptor also worked fine.
Excellent video. I decided to use an old PS2 IDE drive, as it is a maxtor brand that was verified 5 times on the chart. (2F040L0) When I run Chimp, I get an error that it is unable to lock the drive. I followed the jumper pin guides online for a slave config and all 5 listings on the chart indicate it is locking. Any thoughts?
How long does it take to load the Rocky 5 tools disk? I've burnt 2 discs (DVD-R) with an 8x and every time I try to run it from Xbox Media Center the green light flashes on the Xbox and black screen for over 10 minutes.
Should only take about 1-2 minutes max. you can try running it from the HDD by extracting it and copying it over through ftp or try installing it with DVD2Xbox

My games folder is inside the "E" partition, I can't fit more games in it, how can I put the games in the "F" partition and make the Xbox to read them?

Hello. I tried the whole guide step by step. I'm using an SSD Sandisk 3D 1TB. But when going to boot it shows black screen. I'm using the same 80 pin wire and the same startech adapter. It boot the xbox normal intro and then goes "bright black screen" (no dark black screen). Any suggestions please? Thank you.
Did you ever solve it? If so how?
No bullshit and straight to the point.you deserve a 👍 Will be doing this to my new to me og Xbox.
@@carlcharlbury Yeah it was super strange. Fortunately I managed to complete the swap. It was super random how long before the system shut down. Sometimes it was fractions of a second other times it was 20 seconds. That's when I was able to do it. All good now.

I'm currently stuck between hot-swapping and loading up chimp. It freezes every time. Any advice?

Same thing was happening to me and I noticed the original Xbox hard drive jumper was set to "cable select". Switching it to "master" resolved the issue
Great video, but I wasn’t sure about the pros and cons of having the different hard drive partitions sized differently. Presumably certain partitions are usually used for different tasks? What’s the advantage of having F take up most space?
Having partitions over 1 TB used to be a problem so you would split it. These days I don't think it matters so I am trying it out for myself 😂
Any tips on routing the power cable using the startech sata to ide adapter? You use a different one than the one in your link and i am having hard time getting top back on because of how lengthy and bulky the power cable is. When i plug power from motherboard it doesnt give me any good routing options
Did you ever figure this out? I’ve run into the same issue, there’s just no room for the adapter power cable
Which setting should I choose if I’m using a 1tb HDD at this part
“how would you like your partitions setup”?
1 TB will work fine with all extra space on F
great video! weird question.. i have a spare 120 hhd already check and its compatible but might be from an old ps3. do i have to get it wiped first? or will the xbox clone right over it?
It would clone over it
Thanks for the tutorial. Easier from what I did back in 2005 (xboxhdm) and no need for a PC.
Yeah XboxHDM was annoying to me back in the day
Chimp is only recognizing my 2tb drive as 123gb after formatting and cloning. It's almost an identical WD Blue drive you used in the video. Any tips?
@@ArchadesGames Awesome thanks for the info, I dunno why youtube doesn't tell me of replies and does with others lol.
Sounds like a bad cord
I added 300 gb hardrive in mine few years ago
My Xbox is freezing when I attempt to hotswap. Any suggestions?
So I learned a few things that may help someone else, 1. If you use a 3rd party controller, chimp freezes. 2. I used a different IDE2SATA and it did not work, the one in the video did work.
@@SkullyETC thank you man, i dont know whats wrong and i tried an og controller after i saw your comment, and its working, thank you so much!❤️
I just did exactly what he said.. when I boot with the new hard drive it gives me the error screen on boot what am I doing wrong?
One thing about my 1.6 Xbox that I haven't seen mentioned. After doing the hot swap my Xbox would freeze before I could get into chimp. I noticed the original hard drive jumper was set to "cable select". I assume all the 1.6 seagate drives are set this way. Switching the jumper to "master" resolved the issue.
Do you know if me having a 1.6b makes the swap/upgrade any different?
@@E3T7 it's straightforward, just verify your original hard drive is set to master and not cable select.

You can try letting it sit on the chimp connect slave drive screen before pressing A and do the swap then to see if it helps
@@ArchadesGames Didn't work 🙁
@@ArchadesGames Oh, looks like the problem was either the SATA converter I was using was bad OR I needed to switch to the new pin connector. Either way, I got it to work!
I have always been intimidated about doing this. I don’t know why, I’ve modded tons of things. Thanks for the easy explanation
I've tried everything I can find to upgrade my HDD. Nothing works. Chimp just freezes. I tried a different TV RCA ports, ribbon cable. No luck.
So, I'm in the process and then you say that you are going to go to your applications menu and I see an menu that isn't showing on my Xbox and I am suddenly lost! Where did that menu come from!
So i did this using a lockable 500gb hdd did exactly as described and im left with 123gb not the 4something it should be listed as what can i do with softmodded xbox to get the correct size or do i have to do this all over again and select a diff option when using chimp thanks
So I've done everything you said when I get too Chimp to check if both HDD are recognizable somehow my slave drive is not recognizable. I'm pretty sure it's because I'm using the stock ide cable given with the Xbox. If I'm wrong what could be the problem. Thanks
Does the new hard drive still have the same hdd key?
That is set by the eeprom when you lock it
I am having an issue with booting the new HDD. When I connect new HDD and startup, I get the XBOX launch screen and then it changes to a completely black screen, no dashboard. I have let it sit for 20-30 minutes and nothing changes. I used all equipment recommended in the description (Startech IDE adapter, molex power splitter, 80 wire cable). I have the configuration set to master and when I press the eject button nothing happens. Games wont boot, just black screen for eternity. When I put in original hard drive it boots up to my dashboard no problems.
Any ideas???
Clone the old drive again
Ok I get to where it is cloning process but about 75% complete then it gives me hda not ready for command and then it severely slows down data transfer speed to kib/s then stops at 80%. How do I fix?
Just came across a premodded original xbox with some pretty old versions. Wondering if I should revert it and soft mod from scratch, I have the usb cable and mech assault. Just need to buy a compatible usb
Did it before now I can't am I missing something maybe a new hdd instead of an old one would do the trick?
Had some weird experience with a StarTech IDE-to-SATA adaptor, at least on my particular 1.6 OG Xbox.
I launch the console, it works fine.
I turn it off and try to launch it again, I get the error screen.
Some time passes, I launch the console, it works fine.
Basically, any immediate attempts to power on the Xbox after the initial boot always result in the error screen. Some time has to pass.
However, soft resets from the main menu work fine.
A cheaper, Chinese adaptor also worked fine.
Chances are the IDE cable is the culprit more than the adapter
On that ide cable does it matter what length or is the 18 inch too short?
18 or longer should be workable
Excellent video. I decided to use an old PS2 IDE drive, as it is a maxtor brand that was verified 5 times on the chart. (2F040L0) When I run Chimp, I get an error that it is unable to lock the drive. I followed the jumper pin guides online for a slave config and all 5 listings on the chart indicate it is locking. Any thoughts?
Your hard drive does not support locking. You'll have to try with another drive.
Can i get a link to a generic ide to sata that works

Every Xbox has an E drive it is where all your games soundtracks and DLC save
does doing this clean out the slave HDD? i think i have maybe an OS in this HDD im trying to use but I wonder if doing this will just erase everything on the HDD that way i can just start it fresh and not have to actually remove it a different way.
Yes it erases it
Said my f drive was capped out at 167g. but after I went to spacing it out on F and G I got the full 2 tb
I tried the clone, everything seemed to work but I couldn't use the existing cable like you. The old cable works with the old drive. Why do I need a new cable?
Because it needs the increased speed
Softmod, Cerbios. Can I just use fatXplorer to format and lock a new 2TB drive with the backed up EEPROM? Then copy the contents of the original C and E partitions to the new drive before swapping?
That is another way of doing an upgrade for a softmod. Cerbios doesn't have to lock drives.
I couldn't get it to boot for ages. Eventually I figured out it was the adapter from the Amazon link. Don't get that Star-Link adapter. It stops the dvd drive working properly.
Can you explain @jambii267? I am getting error 16 right now after following this.
Now Chimp will not boot. It just gets stuck on Booting Chimp 261812. I am using one of the recommended HDD. WTH?
Do I have to use 80 Wire IDE Cable? Can't I hotswap with the stock cable?
80 wire is required if you upgrade to Sata.
I upgraded to a 2TB ST2000DM008 using chimp with my soft mod xbox... after the upgrade everything seemed to be fine. Locked too. But it takes like 20 seconds to boot to the dash AND its not showing all off the 2tb drive. Only like mayne 100gb
Im wondering the same thing not getting any response to this i used a 500gb hdd followed the video to the T and im onky getting 123gb of space. Im wondering if i can run this again and and split f and e or something because this did not work.

Ciao.
