Correction: there is a USB version of xboxhdm available so you don't have to have a super old PC tower anymore. Do some research if this sounds like a good option for you.
Hello, i got this issue that i just can't seem to find the answer to... i found an OG Xbox right in the thrash can, it was only the console itselt with no Controllers, RCA or Power cords. I decided to take a look and it actually looked fine, so i took it home. Once inside, i used a power cord from a very old 90's CD Player and noticed it fit perfectly on the Xbox. It turned on and i saw the front light flash orange/green. But i also noticed a peculiar smell coming out from the Fan... it smelled like roaches... yeah... took like 3 hours killing and cleaning what i could from the Xbox. I probably killed like 30-40 roaches. I also noticed there was a couple tiny tweezers attached on right on the sides of what it seemed a fuse on the PSU. taking a closer look i knew this was some sort of "bridge". It seems that whoever owned it decided to just get rid of it because of the roach infestation inside, but other than that the system works flawlessly and it appears to be Flashed, because it had a burned disc inside the Drive and a bunch of Retro Emulators installed. I want to remove those tiny tweezers and replace the Fuse, but i can't seem to find any info. You got any idea of what Voltage and Amps for this fuse?
@Jeremiah Borden this channel is essentially retired, haven't really done this stuff since I made these videos. Anyways the error code seems like it's related to the DVD drive. I would try other cables and a new drive entirely
thanks for sharing your knowledge... You are very right, there are thousands of videos... but they are garbage or incomplete... I appreciate you taking the time to detail the themes of our beloved original Xbox.
Your videos are very helpful. I have what I believe to be a 1.3 revision that died on me one day. It ended up being the solder joints on the power supply. I posted about it on Reddit and one of the nice guys on there pointed out to me that not only was the solder joint bad, but there were scorch marks around it. I heard crackling and sizzling when trying to troubleshoot it as well. A close friend of mine was able to resolder the joints and fixed the issue.
I have an OG Xbox 1.0, did the pot tweak on my Thompson drive because it wouldn't read some games which were top notch, no dirt, no scratches. Was originally at 1700omhs turned it down to 1000ohms and it's working perfectly so far, I can finally replay all my old games :)
6:25 'Replacement laser costs the same as a replacement drive' Apparently no longer true, just bought a laser for my Philips drive for $30, the only drives I'm seeing for sale now are $90 for tested working, $50 for a lot of known bad drives, or $50 for 'untested' Thompson drives. I'm at 1 good Samsung, 1 good Philips, and 1 dead Philips.
I replaced the 5 caps on my Halo edition but accidentally pulled a pad off PCB...I reflowed the hell out of it and still seemed to work....so far!?!? Thanks for your videos.
the clock cap is best replaced with coin battery also CLEAN EVERYTHING off your HDD before you softmod or it will be stuck even 2021 rocky5 cant fix this
The clock capacitor CAN be replaced. In fact the new capacitor works 10 times better than the original. Look for capacitors with the following: 2.5 volt 10 Farad (NOT microfarad) Electrolytic Super Capacitor. Mouser Part # 504-HB1030-2R5106-R... It may not fit like the original, you only need to insert it and have the cap laying horizontally. You need to lay it that way, otherwise it will interfere with the DVD-ROM drive... When removing the original cap, make sure you clean the area very well, as the electrolyte that spills out is fairly corrosive. You MUST look at the tracks to see if any have been eaten away. Failing to do this can eventually lead to the X-Box playing up... In ALL the X-Box originals I've repaired having to replace that cap, I replaced it with a 50 Farad, to which all the settings were kept for more than a week with the X-Box unplugged from the mains... Trace corrosion repair to which I did many years ago as Darkmatter, can be seen here: www.theisozone.com/tutorials/xbox/hardware-and-modding/trace-corrosion-repair/ ...
wow thanks for contributing. Your trace corrosion repair was very thorough and helped me a great deal. What you said about the clock cap may be correct, but I still never find it to be that much of an issue to run the machine without the clock cap at all. A modded Xbox wont even ask for the time, nor is it relevant for any software such as games or apps.
Great set of videos! Watched them all. They have a lecture quality to them that isn't boring. I knew I had a Version 1.0 Xbox (which I removed the fan/heatsink and replaced it with a later revision heatsink (broken Xbox). 1:1 fit. I also pieced out the crappy Thompson drive I had which would have trouble reading game discs reliably, with a Philips and it works perfect every time. Now I have 2 original Xboxes that have Philips drives that work great. Going to soft-mod one with a larger hard drive.
You can also put the Thompson DVD drive belt in boiling water which will cause it to shrink back to it's original size/shape. HTH So Microsoft replaced the power supply plug & wire for one with a built in circuit breaker because the connector on the console was faulty! That's like a Hospital putting a Band aid on a severed limb and sending you home!!! I kept the original power plug & lead because I tested it and could find no faults with it or with my wife's one either, we did use the replacement's though. Thanks for the information it's always good to know.
5:20 i did the pot tweak on my xbox 360 probably like 5 years ago now due to the dirty disc error, its a 2009 year Jasper model 360 and the disc drive is a philips / lite-on DG 16D2S. I dont remember the resistance values that i set on the potentiometer, but i still have this console today and use it all the time (its RGH modded) and the drive is still doing great, even reads some lightly scratched discs that other xbox drives struggle with. makes me curious what resistance i set, kinda want to take it apart and check.
Great video except for last tip, Repairing traces on the motherboard is easy! I found my dads dusty old multimeter and soldering iron. I found which trace was broken, soldered a jumper wire between the points, and boom! My xbox powers up like a dream. No random power ups or shutdowns.
I have an old PC (bought it in 2005) and I had luck using Xbox HDM, it's an awesome tool! I extracted the EEPROM.BIN using a special cable that I built (tutorial on youtube, the same one you mentioned at 20:10, it's awesome), got the eeprom's content and using that I burnt a linux live CD on a CD-RW. I revived 3 or 4, maybe 5 Xboxes so far with this method, initializing a new HDD for them. If you have the hardware it's worth going this route.
Thanks for uploading these videos, they contain so much valuable information. Right now i have an xbox 1.0 that boot loops then remains powered on but its flashing red and orange. In your experience, have you been able to fix this issue? I’ve heard this means its a ram issue but i don’t really know
You're wrong about the maximum storage capacity. The Xbox can read up to 2.3 terabytes. And IDE hard drives go up to 750 gigs. You have to keep in mind the dates on the hard drive as well if you have an original version 1.0 Xbox with a hard drive from 2001 and you replace it with a hard drive IDE from 2008 you just made the Xbox 7 years newer than its original age. I've used IDE all the time never going lower than 250. They're very easy to find locally and cheap as well. The trick is when you're using chimp you have to listen to the hard drive. If you hear any clicking or weird noises coming from it throw it in the garbage. Hook up your original hard drive back into your Xbox and rerun chimp again. Also I've heard of a few people using the original IDE cable with a 2 terabyte. Sometimes it works when it does it is a little slower. You can use an 80 wire IDE even with an IDE hard drive it will make for a lot faster load times.
Retro Pro Frank while that's technically true, there aren't 2.3 TB drives you can buy. I don't suggest anyone buys a HDD if they can't utilize all of it's space. You also need to take extra steps to make sure the Xbox writes the data correctly, or else you run the risk of overwriting vital data. Of course, that's completely within your own discretion. I just don't recommend it. Regarding your comments on IDE drives, I just wanted to give a reasonable pros/cons list so people can decide for themselves what kind of drive to get. Thanks for watching!
My xbox has this problem: When I turn it first time everything is fine, nothing goes wrong. After some time IF I only eject the game or press power and want to turn it on again, it will start the christmas light. I I continually press power like 3, 4 times it will eventually work again and I can play the game. I opened it up, changed the heat compound for both CPU and GPS and I removed the clock capacitor and still same problem. My xbox is ver 1.3 and unmodded.
Thanks so much for your help, I haven't watched this video yet but I planned to purchase an xbox original motherboard revision 1.6 I think it was from your other video. Keep up the great work, new subscriber.
@Retro_Bg_Repairs i recently like 7 hours ago used a Band a loom rubber band to replace my drives belt bc it was deformed and stretched sadly i have a reading error i cant fix the band a loom bands are the ones used to make these rubber band bracelets im thinking about making a vid on changing the belt which is really just a small rubber band and the band a loom bands may lop around a but if the tray moves faster but i went for hours fast and slow pushing the tray in and out and had no problems with it myself while i was watching yt just saying this for other readers and just incase you didn't think or know of it as a option
ah that sucks. To tell you the truth, I did manage to fix that once by cleaning it really thoroughly. The clock cap leaked quite a bit and the machine wouldnt boot. I cleaned it really hard for like an hour and eventually it was back to normal. Good luck!
Retro_VG_Repairs It is worth a try. The version is a 1.6. I changed the thermalpast and removed the dust it had inside, no luck. It didn't look like any of the caps had leaked. I was thinking about trying the heatgun trick. Like some use on the xbox 360 (rrod). Have you tryed that on a O.G. xbox motherboard?
Wow 1.6s shouldnt have that issue. I would try the reheating thing. You get the flashing red/green when there is a short, or damage to some component. The Xbox is detecting some kind of huge failure. If absolutely nothing looks amiss, it would be incredibly hard to figure out what exactly stopped working.
The cleaning didn't help, frist cleaned with elektronics cleaner. Did nothing. Then cleaned like tech yes city does with pc parts. No change. Tryed the oven heating trick. Not helping. I think some of the caps has gone bad.
Could just be component failure, like one of the chips. Capacitors failing would probably result in a no power situation. Or random shutoff during gameplay. FRAG is telling you that the hardware cannot boot up at all. I would seriously just recommend finding another cheap Xbox. Keep checking your thrift stores for good deals.
Once I got an Xbox with FRAG and the only problem was that the previous idiot who tinkered with the system, twisted the IDE cable and plugged it in upside down despite the IDE port and cable has a "key" to prevent this, they managed to do it. Also, as far as I remember the leaking acid from a ClockCap caused some serious problems but after cleaning the stuff up the system started. Probably something was sorted or something.
AWESOME series of videos mate, KUDOS! Very comprehensive. I'm now subscribed to your channel. Perhaps you can help me, my original Xbox 1- has no dashboard 2- once the Xbox is turned on, it goes through that visual boot-up routine [mostly green coloured shapes] then, instead of finishing on the green Xbox logo that you would expect, mine shows the Xbox logo, in BLUE! [?]. 3- this one, is the one TRUE problem I have with my Xbox, it plays all my games [over a dozen] without any issues whatsoever, BUT there is ONE game, which I have had to purchase FOUR times now [three times used and the fourth one brand new/still sealed] which my Xbox just won't play - that game is Aeon Flux. I'm a HUGE fan of the Aeon Flux animated series and I'm DYING to play this game...I just can't figure this thing out. Why won't it play this one game [a game I would give up all my other games, just to play it]? I've cleaned the discs and the laser lens, I've asked all kinds of people around me and online - nobody can explain this. I got this Xbox for free, from a friend's friend, that's all I know. ANY clue, hint, tip, help, from you would be GREATLY appreciated - I fear you are my last hope, to EVER play this game. Sorry for this long comment. Thank you kindly
Thanks to your video I found a broken trace right where you showed, close to the ClockCap, managed to patch it but my motherboard still won't start up. I know the PSU is working as I managed to test it with a different motherboard, I checked every major capacitors but it still won't work. I'm running out of ideas, I don't want this to turn into just another donor system, I want to save them all!
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 It seems like it's a version 1.0 or 1.1, since the power cable is a single row one. When I switched the PSU with another Xbox the system turned on, so it's not the PSU. I tested the buttons in continuity mode with a multimeter and the eject and power buttons seems to be alright. When I press and of them literally nothing happens. Not a beep, fans not moving, no LEDs. No bulging caps, I have a 100Mhz capacitor tester and I didn't find any bad caps among the bigger or smaller ones, the one broken trace I found was patched. Maybe there's a fuse that was blown on the board, I don't know...
Hey Mr retro I have 2 x boxes that I have not used in a long time that missed up on me one day I had them both hooked up to my radio and TV because 1 had all my music saved on it from old CDs that otherwise r lost or broken and the other was used to play my games because the other didn't show picture any more then one night I woke up to seeing and hearing a pop and flash of light from both of them both at the same time I want to know is their a way I can send them to u so u can fix them I'm sure I can do it but your knowledge and experience r far greater then mine and would like it to be fixed and still keep my music and game data saved in it
I repaired my Thomson TGM600 drive - cleaned the belt, lubricated gears and rails and cleaned the laser. Success at first - and then the drive stopped working completely. No response, no power. Any suggestions?
@@xman2k2 I found some iFixit information about replacing the capacitors on the drive's PCB board. I'm waiting for the replacement capacitors and probably going to try this week. Will update on my results! www.ifixit.com/Guide/Xbox+Thomson+DVD+Drive+Disassembly/129534
Great information. I'm watching this in June 2020. Are you aware of the Insignia project that's hopefully going to bring back Xboxlive 1.0? I'm super excited and hope it becomes a reality. PGR2 is and always will be my favorite online racing experience.
Bro my Xbox flashes green consistently, the tray can open and close no problem but the green light won’t stop flashing . My Xbox works perfectly fine I was playing a game stuck inside and I used a paper clip to open it . Ever since I did that I haven’t been playing it and the green light doesn’t stop flashing ! I need your help bro you’re a genius!!!
When it comes to the clock capacitor I think it has to do with more of where it was manufactured, I own both a 1.0 and 1.2 Xbox motherboard that comes with the exact same capacitor used in a 1.6. I also own a 1.0 that was manufactured in Mexico that has this bad capacitor in it, it's a black capacitor with no obvious brand names on it.
Hi I just found an original Xbox on the street being thrown out. I get a flashing red and orange light and no picture. I bought a brand new av cable no picture. Digging around the internet I can't find a clear explanation to what this might be for sure. I've removed the clock capacitor.
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 indeed it was leaking and I have removed it and tried to clean it up with IPA no difference to the result. I'll get another chance to work on it tomorrow.
Ivan Blajer hmm. Blinking red light shows system failure. The cap could have ruined something important. Don't spend too much effort, you got it for free anyways
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 with the av cable out I got blinking orange and green. With the cable attached I get blinking orange and red, theard is a version 1.0 or 1.1. The GPU fan doesn't spin but there's power to the connector the main CPU fan runs fine. Before I give up I might check a few other things for broken traces. In the area where the clock cap was I can see another small cap that has leaked.
nice video, I wanted your opinion, my xbox does something weird, it's a FRAG but it works .... when I boot it starts 3 times and then it flashes red /green light and no video signal as you show in the video, and ok everything is normal FRAG, but if I then press the EJECT button the console starts up normally and I play without problems even for hours, how is it possible ??? can i fix it easily if this happens?
Had to use xboxhdm for my old 1.1 Xbox. Challange was to find an old enough PC, found one from church made in 2003. Know I treat this old PC as my Xbox resurrection sarcophagus.
Hi, i have a 1.0 version, the motherboard caps have been replaced previously by tech. Everything looks good on mboard and power supply. But when i hold in the power button i hear the fan trying to start the engine. But i cant get it to turn over?
Had the same issue with my 1.4, which uses the same powersupply (just with another connector and newer revision). Tested with another powersupply, and woila, it was working again. So I suspect your powersupply is faulty. For reference, use this extensive guide: adriancallaghan.co.uk/wp-content/downloads/Guides/XBOX_REPAIR_GUIDE.pdf
I have the Xbox launch team special edition...1.0 board, Thomson, Western digital. DVD tray can't seem to unlock...closes easily once you use the pinhole. Bigger problem is using component, and av inputs can't get bootup screen to show. Ideas?
I keep telling my friends to let me take out the time capacitors out of there older xboxes but they look at me like I’m crazy. Maybe They should watch this video. :)
CHIMP wont display video on the 1.6v xbox and its a super pain in the ass usually I just give up trying to recover or upgrade the hdd of a softmod and just install a modchip and make a clean install with a "new" hdd
Yeah it dosent have anything to do with that, it has to do with the excalibur video encoder braking some 480p stuff also braking support for some unix things...
MobCat I've never had that issue. I say to use composite because the Xbox will run in 480i, which xcalibur can handle just fine. 480p wouldn't be part of it at all.
Mine boots and shows error 9, but also randomly turns off and power is on constantly with lead in, I removed the clock cap as it had leaked, but error 9 still there and shuts off by itself think it’s all a bad trace? Or hard drive failure too?
I unfortunately ran into the fragging problem after I replaced the thermal paste. It worked for a few minutes then froze. Restart the system and boom no video and system cycled on and off a few times then red and green lights. Not sure what I did just popped off the heatsinks cleaned the chips used artic 5 and put it all back together :(
I have a dead 1.6 Xbox, right before it died I was playing Halo 2 but the thing just shuts off by itself off and wouldn't turn back on. I took it apart, pressed the power button a few times, the fan would spin for 1 second, press it a few more times, fan spins again for 1 second. Then I replaced the 5 bulging caps shown in this video but the Xbox still won't turn on when I press power or eject. Now fan won't spin at all. Checked for trace corrosion on the board but it's clean. Plug in a working power supply from another 1.6 Xbox, still won't turn on. Please help, I really wana fix this Xbox. EDIT: I forgot to mention the 3300uF capacitor I got from Sayal Electronics is 16V with an unknown brand. Do you think they are bad too? secure.sayal.com/STORE2/View_SHOP.php?SKU=232789
Hi there! very interesting videos, indeed. I have one xbox 1.6 that seems to need a particular kind of repair. As I said, it's a 1.6, and it had very distorted color and resolution, bad loud scratchy sound, and auto power on w/dvd open. I took it to the service and told the guy to do a total recap (there were 2 blown capacitors -not the clock one-), he did... and both sound and video are great (video does get some sporadic odd coloring/ brightness issues after 2 hours of usage, though). Unfortunately, the auto power wasn't solved AND, this is the strangest thing: I can turn on the Xbox by pluging it and play... just ONCE per day. Then, it won't boot up, at all, no matter how much I try. Any suggestions?
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 The trace corrosion is my main suspect... but I'm worried about the odd coloring/saturation/brightness briefly "storming" on screen after 2 hours of gaming or so. The previous shitty technician (who obviously assured everything worked perfectly) said that I will have lots of overheating problems and most probably, that I'd need to do some reballing; but I do remember having put arctic MX4, at least on the micro (not on the graphic card). XBMC says it's 60ºc on the micro and 45º on the graphic chip... Should I worry? I read somewhere that 1.6 kind of gives wrong readings.
@@facundovaldez6990 it's not that accurate. Don't worry about the temps, they aren't even close to frying. The video issues sound weird. All the bad caps were replaced?
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 so he said. It would be a real pain to recap all over again, but I'm gonna keep an eye on that as well. Thank you so much for your help
Omar Steven yo hello 👋 im try help su your problem are Common you need clean the dvd or game and the dvd drive pickup and calibrate the láser What dvd drive you have (Thompson,Philips,Hitachi or Samsung)
a modchip is useful for 1.6 xbox, for earlier versions softmod + tssop is best with tssop you can also safely unlock the hdd and that's great for hdds that can not be locked. I still dream for the day I can increase the ram memory and even an upgrade for the cpu but I suck at soldering. and finding a compatible computer for the xbox is harder nowdays. It's crazy how after the upgrade some games run too fast that makes them unplayable.
If you're softmodded and remove the clock cap, does the new dashboard (I forget it's name) use Network Time Protocol (NTP), to automatically set the time and date?
i bro, my xbox vvas fraging, but i change the dvd drive povver cord and it vvorks, but vvhen turn off i must wait few minutes before turn on again, becouse grag again a fevv minutes later turn on great, vvhat can it be? im sorry for my english thanks
Oliver S. Never seen anyone try that. Honestly it's not worth the trouble. It wouldn't hold the time very long anyway when it's unplugged and there isn't any game that cares about the current clock.
I am looking at replacing the 5 capacitors by the CPU and PSU. The generic 6.3v 1500uf caps all are bulging and 4 are leaking, but the console somehow still turns on and functions normally.
You can use an Arduino or Raspberry Pi and a couple of wires to extract the EEPROM. An Arduino only costs like $2-3. github.com/grimdoomer/PiPROM github.com/Ryzee119/ArduinoProm/blob/master/README.md
Does anyone know the solution with getting the hexen disc utility working when the xbox disc drive is dead? I heard you can ftp the files to the hard drive but I don't know if it works and it looks a little bit complicated. The xbox I'm working on is 1.0 tsop flashed so will it be simple? I wish to just replace the hard drive with a bigger one and not use something like chimp or a old PC.
Matrix Millennium no real way to so that, sorry dude. To use the HDD version of hexen, you need an actual dashboard to access it. Ftp won't work since you also need a dash already. Either you borrow a working DVD drive, use chimp, or set up the new drive with the new usb version of hdmaker. Old PC not necessary anymore
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 I have access to a moded dashboard / bios already just a dead DVD drive to use the disc version of hexen to format the new drive. Do I still have to use chimp or get a working DVD drive to just copy things over and change the bios over to unleash X?
Matrix Millennium yeah well here's the issue: the new hard drive is empty and unformatted. You need to get the dashboard files onto the new one using the methods I listed above. You either use hexen, chimp, or use xboxhdmaker.
Matrix Millennium that's why when modding I always have a spare Xbox with a working DVD. Once I upgrade the HDD and tsop, I put the old dead DVD drive back in. You could probably luck out a grab an Xbox from a local thrift or garage sale. Then swap out the disc drive
I thought I would ask. I actually fixed 2 of my Sega Dreamcast's by tweaking the potentiometer on the back of the laser not to long ago, they were dormant for about 15 years boxed up. Now they work fine. I would have to believe that my original Xbox has some trace corrosion as you have showed us in some of your videos. My old Xbox has the symptoms of when I plug it in at the wall, it'll power up but I cannot power the system down by pushing the power button. However the disc drive works fine. Thanks.
Blitzkrieg wow well done. Yeah that definitely sounds like trace corrosion on the bottom side of the board. That's always a fun fix! There a couple of good tutorials about that on TH-cam, definitely worth watching
I tried to fix my Xbox's trace corrosion problem and destroyed my Xbox in the process. I suppose I should have purchased some flux, it was difficult to get the solder to stick to the 30awg kynar wire. Now I need a version 1.0 Xbox motherboard. Are the disc drives interchangeable between the different versions of Xbox's, could I take my disc drive out of my version 1.0 Xbox and put it in another version?
Correction: there is a USB version of xboxhdm available so you don't have to have a super old PC tower anymore. Do some research if this sounds like a good option for you.

If your Xbox frags you can always try using a heat gun to reflow the solder on the difrent chips in the xbox
BoneCollector thanks for watching! I was planning on making more videos but got super busy. I'll try make a modding tutorial soon
Just found out my OG is indeed a 1.0. Can't wait to start modding. Any tips?
You can also put the Thompson DVD drive belt in boiling water which will cause it to shrink back to it's original size/shape.
HTH
So Microsoft replaced the power supply plug & wire for one with a built in circuit breaker because the connector on the console was faulty!
That's like a Hospital putting a Band aid on a severed limb and sending you home!!!
I kept the original power plug & lead because I tested it and could find no faults with it or with my wife's one either, we did use the replacement's though.
Thanks for the information it's always good to know.
Thank you so much for your videos. You inspired me and gave me the guidance to replace 5 capacitors and we are rediscovering our XBox games! 👍
"I have a soldering iron and I'm not a barbarian"...funny stuff, and this tut is awwwwwwesome.
You also forgot about Piprom...
Great video except for last tip, Repairing traces on the motherboard is easy! I found my dads dusty old multimeter and soldering iron. I found which trace was broken, soldered a jumper wire between the points, and boom! My xbox powers up like a dream. No random power ups or shutdowns.
Hey Retro, thanks for the video, lots of good information in here.
You can swap your hdd if your xbox is softmodded
Yes but they need the same key, so you need to backup the eeprom. Only a hard mod will disregard hdd keys
Come back!
Absolutely fantastic lecture i learn from you a lot. Thank you so much and keep going.
I find that greasing the gear teeth and track rails fixes a lot of janky optical drive trays.
Thanks for uploading these videos, they contain so much valuable information. Right now i have an xbox 1.0 that boot loops then remains powered on but its flashing red and orange. In your experience, have you been able to fix this issue? I’ve heard this means its a ram issue but i don’t really know
Can an SSD be used in place of the SATA drive?
Sure. There is some debate that the Xbox will wear them out faster, but I haven't seen any evidence personally. Use any drive you want
very useful video
big thanks
If you ever Comeback could you do video on replacing the disk drive with lg drive gdr-8163b
Well this video shattered my dreams, my console is "Fraging", so is it not worth me changing out the caps or re flowing the cpu and gpu?
Sounds like a dying motherboard. Any bulging capacitors?
Thank you thank you!
Thanks so much for your help, I haven't watched this video yet but I planned to purchase an xbox original motherboard revision 1.6 I think it was from your other video. Keep up the great work, new subscriber.
SoldierSparky thanks for the support!
Nice and detailed info. The only bad thing is, that my xbox needs a new(used) motherboard. Green/red flashing light...
ah that sucks.
Great info , man thanks!
Thank you this video helped me fix my xbox
Tiny Goliath happy to hear!
Dukefazon tell me more. What version? Describe the symptoms
Dukefazon I don't mean to be redundant but you checked all the traces on the back of the motherboard that I show at 25:55?
@@retro_vg_repairs3339 4 traces run at that corner and the rest seemed to be fine. But I'll check them again later tomorrow.
Did you ever figure out the issue with your DVD drive? I’m having the same issue

Great information. I'm watching this in June 2020. Are you aware of the Insignia project that's hopefully going to bring back Xboxlive 1.0? I'm super excited and hope it becomes a reality. PGR2 is and always will be my favorite online racing experience.
That would be epic.
My 1.0 looks like the one in the video. The other 2 I have look nothing like the one in the video. 1.1's I believe.
i heard that using sata adapter slows down speeds over ide the biggest ide you can get is 750gb your thought son that>?
Plan on making a part 4? I learned a lot from these videos, but I’m really curious about modding. Just bought a V1.0 (launch edition?) Xbox

Hi I just found an original Xbox on the street being thrown out. I get a flashing red and orange light and no picture. I bought a brand new av cable no picture. Digging around the internet I can't find a clear explanation to what this might be for sure. I've removed the clock capacitor.
Ivan Blajer hmm was the cap leaking? Try cleaning that area with isopropyl alcohol
Ivan Blajer save the DVD drive, power supply and other things. They may be useful if you get another xbox
Thanks
Had to use xboxhdm for my old 1.1 Xbox. Challange was to find an old enough PC, found one from church made in 2003. Know I treat this old PC as my Xbox resurrection sarcophagus.
Don't forget duox2, duox3, aladdin xt advance chip from ebay

Hi, i have a 1.0 version, the motherboard caps have been replaced previously by tech. Everything looks good on mboard and power supply. But when i hold in the power button i hear the fan trying to start the engine. But i cant get it to turn over?
No damage from clock capacitor?
Had the same issue with my 1.4, which uses the same powersupply (just with another connector and newer revision). Tested with another powersupply, and woila, it was working again.
So I suspect your powersupply is faulty. For reference, use this extensive guide: adriancallaghan.co.uk/wp-content/downloads/Guides/XBOX_REPAIR_GUIDE.pdf
How about flashing green light only?
I have the Xbox launch team special edition...1.0 board, Thomson, Western digital. DVD tray can't seem to unlock...closes easily once you use the pinhole. Bigger problem is using component, and av inputs can't get bootup screen to show. Ideas?
I keep telling my friends to let me take out the time capacitors out of there older xboxes but they look at me like I’m crazy. Maybe They should watch this video. :)
Eric Young just Google some pictures and you can see how ugly it gets
CHIMP wont display video on the 1.6v xbox and its a super pain in the ass usually I just give up trying to recover or upgrade the hdd of a softmod and just install a modchip and make a clean install with a "new" hdd
MobCat make sure you're using composite cables
Yeah it dosent have anything to do with that, it has to do with the excalibur video encoder braking some 480p stuff also braking support for some unix things...
MobCat I've never had that issue. I say to use composite because the Xbox will run in 480i, which xcalibur can handle just fine. 480p wouldn't be part of it at all.
my stock ide cable can run a 320gb wd blue 2.5 drive
Mine boots and shows error 9, but also randomly turns off and power is on constantly with lead in, I removed the clock cap as it had leaked, but error 9 still there and shuts off by itself think it’s all a bad trace? Or hard drive failure too?
is anywhere a image how i need to solder the wires for my aladdin chip?
Anyone know which dvd drive I ghouls buy for my og Xbox?

Any issues if I used silicone grease/paste on the rails and plastic gears? Thanks

@@reynaldobenavidesmendoza5587 shouldn't be a problem for a 1.6
What do u mean?
@@reynaldobenavidesmendoza5587 exactly what I said. The trace problem shouldn't be a concern if you have a 1.6
Hi there! very interesting videos, indeed.
Watch the trace corrosion bit. Sounds exactly like what's wrong. 25.03
Acid to neutralize acid? Isn't that just diluting it?

Man, this knowledge is pure gold. Thanks for sharing. Any ideas to fix a faulty controller port? My player4 port doesn't work
maybe check the port itself and see if it needs cleaning, by the time you see this youve either gave it or fixed it, but hey, i tried 🤷
I would just replace with a donated port from a parts machine.
a modchip is useful for 1.6 xbox, for earlier versions softmod + tssop is best with tssop you can also safely unlock the hdd and that's great for hdds that can not be locked. I still dream for the day I can increase the ram memory and even an upgrade for the cpu but I suck at soldering. and finding a compatible computer for the xbox is harder nowdays. It's crazy how after the upgrade some games run too fast that makes them unplayable.
The cpu upgrade as already been done years ago. And forget about it, it will ruin the games, only helps with emulation and multimedia
If you're softmodded and remove the clock cap, does the new dashboard (I forget it's name) use Network Time Protocol (NTP), to automatically set the time and date?
Believe so, just need Ethernet

Limitation of fatx file system. It's universally known 2tb is the max
Any advise on replacing the time capacitor with a rechargeable battery or sth?
Oliver S. Never seen anyone try that. Honestly it's not worth the trouble. It wouldn't hold the time very long anyway when it's unplugged and there isn't any game that cares about the current clock.
ok. Thanks!

@@retro_vg_repairs3339 well that kind of sucks but I'll look into it thanks for the help..
Matrix Millennium that's why when modding I always have a spare Xbox with a working DVD. Once I upgrade the HDD and tsop, I put the old dead DVD drive back in. You could probably luck out a grab an Xbox from a local thrift or garage sale. Then swap out the disc drive
Good video, do you know what the optimum potentiometer readings are for a Sega Dreamcast laser? This info would really be helpful.
Blitzkrieg I do not, sorry
I've seen a few videos on the internet showing how to fix the trace corrosion, I'll give it a try once I get the parts I need.
