My hedgehog died about 3 days ago, so this video is pretty bittersweet. I was glad to hear that 5-6 years is a respectable age for a hedgehog, I had somehow got it into my head that it was 8-10 years and was worried Nigel had died early. Prickle reminds me a lot of him, he was very sociable (practically never curled up into a ball) and LOVED his wheel. Sadly we believe he had a degenerative disease that weakened his legs, when we put him to sleep his hind legs didn't work anymore and I believe the reason he was as dehydrated as he was was because he couldn't push himself up to get over the rim of his water dish.
I'm glad Prickle got another chance at life after being such low weight when you guys got her, and I'm glad to see that she is in good condition.
I hope she continues to bring joy to people for years to come.
I'm sorry to hear about Nigel. It sounds like he succumbed to old age and his legs just couldn't hold him up anymore and dehydration is very common in the last few weeks of many senior hedgies. Thank you for giving him a loving home ♥

I've never seen a hedgehog be that open and active. Every hedgehog I see is really shy and grumpy like Groucho.

I live in England and love Animal Wonders Montana. It is my heart's desire to one day travel over to America and visit AWM. One of my favourite animals here in England is the badger, I don't know if badger's live in America too.
Just ordered a wooden bridge for Prickle :) Hopefully we'll get to see her cuddle up under it in the future!

Oh my goodness! She is adorable! I've always thought hedgehogs were cute but not great about friendly amiable human interaction that I typically might look for in a pet, but Prickle definitely shows how great they might be!

This was my first hedgehog... He was INCREDIBLY friendly. He loved to run on the floor, but he was never really interested in a wheel or ball. We lost him to cancer at only 3 years old. It was awful.
I have a boy hedgie myself, and as much as I love meeting your animals I was hoping and praying to see the Animal Wonders hedgehogs make another appearance since the last one I saw was groucho. Prickle seems like such an active sweetie!

We used to have a hamster named Sandy that was obsessed with her wheel. She would keep us up at night with her running. It bothered our other hamster, Cinderella so much that Cinderella would sit on the wheel to prevent Sandy from using it!

She's okay. A bit too enthusiastic for my personal tastes, but she has a great, lively personality that doesn't come off as booming or shouty. Her voice is great to get kids interested in learning about animals, and I wouldn't doubt that these get shown in schools all of the time.

+AnimalWonders Montana, ok! So one day me and my mom had decided to go look at clownfish at a local pet store. After finding out how expensive they are, we decided to go to another pet store to look at hedgehogs, myself having never seen one in person before. When we were inside, I saw a cage with a sign labeled 'hedgehog' on it, so I asked a lady there if I could hold him. My calm and presenting nature drew his curiousity out. After popping his little face out at me, the lady told me, "that was the quickest he's ever came out than with anyone else!" It was then that I became in love with Louie the Hedgehog! I guess you could say I 'saved' him, after being rehomed. His previous owners had moved to San Diego, where hedgehogs are illegal, they gave him to the pet store. Ever since, I've loved him with all my heart! He even climbs up on my shoulder to snuggle!

I have 4 hedgehogs, 2 are babys, 2 are adults, 1 is 2 years old the other is almost 3 years old, 1 is 6 months old, and 1 is 4 months old
Well, if Prickle was owned for 2 years before being dropped off at a pet hotel/boarding house, odds are when you got her she would have been 2 1/2 to 3 years of age. If the place she was born in (most likely a breeder's home) wasn't caring for her, her mother, and her siblings properly, then that would partially account for her small size and her weight issues. Then again, as you pointed out, her being so underweight for her species is most likely due to her being so active that she has to exhaust herself on her wheel.
That's just my personal observation. I'm glad that she is at full weight for her size and so sociable. She makes for a really super ambassador. :D
My hedgehog is 600grams and she's a girl. She's about 15 months old as of Sept 2018, still growing. She used to be a charming girl, but she's been acting like 20 year old college girl from a wealthy family lately. She comes to me and sleeps in my hands when she wants to, but gets tired of it all of a sudden. She hates exercising and gets all grumpy when she's hungry. She likes to eat. I love her, but she's grown too big!

I wonder why the hedgehog would choose the mealworm over vegetables? Vegetables might not taste the best, but they should at least taste better than a worm, and have a significantly lower gross factor.
Could the hedgehog be picky about salad dressing is used, or other seasonings?

I was wondering if you could look into adding mobile cards to your videos, they're a little feature that adds the ability to put links to videos and websites right in the video and available on mobile! Very easy to set up, and very helpful for people like me that watch videos on their phone!

Hi, there! Amaaaazing channel! I have a question I would so appreciate if you could maybe help me with or address in a video at some point, perhaps. My 1 year old African Grey is really scared of new toys and generally pretty shy, though she likes me a lot. I can't seem to get her to play with new things, and I'm afraid she'll get bored. Also, she doesn't want to play outside of her cage, only inside. Outside, she just wants to sit on her perch. Thanx in advance! :)

Maybe she was depressed by sketchy living situation and became addicted to the wheel and the endorphins you get from running as a coping mechanism. But having a much more active life with lots of enrichment now will probably help a lot.

It's so sad that quite a few animals are malnourished when they come to you. I guess people don't do enough research to create a good diet for their pet. I am glad that you help them be their healthiest best!

So you guys give Prickles waxworms? Where can I find some so I too can help 2 of my hedgies gain a few grams too. I've been giving them mealworms and dry cat food and ALSO took away the wheels last month so they could gain weight to help them a bit for these cold winter months.
My boys are Zack and Hans and they're 3 years old! I adopted them since a friend of mine couldn't keep them anymore and I've had one in the past.
My first girl hedgehog lasted me almost 6 years before she past away. But she's in a better place now!
Ashley M. Dry cat food is hard for them to eat and they can waste calories chomping it down. You can soak it and crush it to help them out. Also providing a heat pad can reduce their need to spend energy staying warm. Wax worms cna be ordered by many businesses, I'd suggest asking any local pet stores in your area. Thanks for taking in those two littles! Give them my love!

Where do you get your insectivore diet from? I've always used cat food because it's the best option I've heard of up until now, but if it's not too expensive or hard to get where I live I'd like to switch to it. Thanks!
We order ours directly from Mazuri's website. We find Mazuri insectivore diet to be the best available for hedgies. Unfortunately it's problematic for individual pet owners to get because it comes in a large size that's expensive and not cheap to ship. This is one of the main reasons breeders and pet owners feed cat food even though it's hard on hedgies' teeth. We're able to offset the cost of the shipping and use it up before it loses it's nutritional value because we use it for so many of the animals we care for.
Gotta love shipping; maybe one day when I have enough animals to feed I'll look into buying some. Thanks for letting me know!
Mazuri Insectivore food puts GROUND ASPEN (aka wood) in their food. This is not ok! It also contains ethoxyquin which can cause CANCER. Feed hedgies high quality cat food with MEAT (not by product or meal) as the first ingredient. DO NOT FEED HEDGIES MAZURI

Any ideas on convincing a hedgie to eat live mealworms? My girl just refuses to eat live, and while she does eat freeze-dried when offered, I'm afraid of impaction but she needs her chitin. Vet is no help.

maggieedna Hedgehogs are solitary animals in the wild and don't require companions to fulfill any natural social behavior. Their natural behavior is to explore lots of terrain looking for food, so giving them new and varied toys and furniture is important for their mental and physical wellbeing.
