Hedgehogs and porcupine sure look similar with bodies covered in spikes, but does that mean they're related to each other just because they look alike? Jessi explains with the help of Tickles the hedgehog and Kemosabe the porcupine!

Ugh, I know! I filmed this between what felt like one thousand tasks and almost cried when I heard the audio. I had to choose between bad audio and not putting the video out at all. I'm not sure why the lav mic didn't record properly, but I'll be investigating before I shoot another video because this wasn't pleasant to listen to.

@@animalwondersmontana Yea, it sounds like it's the camera's audio (which almost always is not great). My guess is that something, likely a loose jack-stick, caused the camera to not registrate the microphone, and then reverted back to its own "mic".

@@WIImotionmasher they do have ever-growing teeth. But they have 4 incisors on the top jaw. 2 are nonfunctional.

Yay for Kemosabe, Tickles, and convergent evolution! One thing I like about AnimalWonders is how you drive home the lesson that we need to understand the evolutionary history of the animals around us, to be better caregivers.
My grandma used to walk to school through a cemetery that was also a hedgehog sanctuary! Theyed meet her at the gate and follow her until she had to cross the street

I heard everything you said Jessi despite the video sounding a bit different. I am glad Kemosabe is feeling better and it was good to see pickles again. They are both so cute.
Tenrecs are another animal (they look like hedgehogs) that have hair/spikes. But they are not related closely to porcupines or hedgehogs.
Not to mention Echidnas!
Am I the only one who has to re-watch a Kemosabe episode a few times in a row because the first time I'm too busy soaking in the cuteness & completely miss what the video is about??!! LOL Awesome to see Kemo looking better ♥️ I know you don't have any at AnimalWonders but it would be interesting to also compare the echidna, since it evolved down the very different marsupial line & has a completely different dentition with the super long termite-eating tongue!

Lol, Tickles was moving around so much during filming! She wanted to get down and explore and the only thing that kept her entertained enough in my hands was moving her almost constantly 😅

How is kemosabe? Is he feeling better?
He's doing better! It was so good to see him eating his full diet on his own 5 days after we started him on antibiotics. He'll be on medication for another week or so just to give him the best chance at fighting off the infection in his mouth. Then, fingers crossed it doesn't come back once he's off the medicine.
They are quite different animals but something they have in common is they are both insanely cute!

We're super fans of beavers and restoring natural waterways! It's very exciting to see the movement getting traction and attention!This particular situation in the desert showcases how awesome beavers are, however I'm greatly concerned about the wellbeing of the many beavers sent to this very inhospitable environment without the support they needed to survive.

Seeing those hedgehog teeth makes me imagine one of them growling like a dog to try to scare someone. I don't know that it would work very well, though. They're not very intimidating.

Awwwww cute lil insectivorous hedgie teefs!!! I might be weird but I think little insectivores have the cutest teeth. Also when you say rodents have ever growing teeth, you’re NOT kidding!!. I used to rescue rats and many of our pickups had malocclusion issues that required tooth trims. It’s amazing how fast rats teeth grow even with hard foods and wood toys to gnaw. Oh, and don’t worry about the audio. It happens, it’s done, forget it and move on. It was enough to see Kemo, chomping his little butt off :)

I do have one question though, are parrotlets a sociable species? I need to know this because i just adopted a parrotlet that my family found on the streets and we are currently looking for it’s owner
Parrotlets are social by nature and live in flocks. However, they can also be quite territorial and wary of strangers. Hopefully the little one is able to be reunited with their family, thank you for helping them!

You could add the tenrec from madagascar in this catagory. The smallest zoo in holland ( zoo bizar) has these and fall on the same convergent evolution tree brach
Tickles is adoreable. Does he get grumpy sometimes. My Princess goes through stages of being super grumpy and doesn't want to be handled. Other times she will happily sleep under my shirt.

Hedgehogs Love dry catfood,lo of water and some of the local fruits in the area they live. And dry mealworm also. Local cherries they also like very much.

I am adopting a ringneck dove and I was wondering if you had any reliable resources on care? I learned VERY quickly about all the bad information on the internet last year when I got my cockatiel. Thank goodness for BirdTricks for setting me straight! There's just not any good info on doves. Any help, if you can, will be immensely appreciated.

This is the first time I've noticed that Kemo's tail is prehensile. Is that unique to his particular porcupine species?
Yes, Kemosabe is in the genus Coendou, which are the prehensile tailed porcupines! His species, Coendou prehensilis, is one of eight in the genus, where they all have prehensile tails.

i have a question its about my parrot its a big aleksander and it doesn't like being touched and i have to trim his nails how do i acoplis that? its a mission impossible to touch his fethers.

hello Jessie!!!!!!!! first I just wanted to say I hope kemosabe is feeling better and second have you ever done a DNA test on Ruby if so do you know what dog breeds she is? stay safe
We've never done a DNA test on Ruby, I'm not sure it would help much since she's likely a mix of so many breeds. We were told secind hand that she was a pup from a Labrador retriever and a Rottweiler, but she's smaller than either of those breeds and has features of others too. I'm guessing her parents were mixed from mixes :)

I didn't know porcupines had prehensile tails! Do ALL species of porcupine have prehensile tails?
Do there spikes feel the same?
Pretty similar, yeah! Except new world porcupines have barbed tips and Hedgehogs don't.

Porcupines are rodents and rodents are euarchontoglirians like primates, whereas hedgehogs are erinaceomorphs and erinaceomorphs are laurasiatheres like carnivorans, pangolins, hoofed mammals, whales, and bats.

They're not! Hedgehogs are in the order eulipotyphla, and are pretty closely related to shrews!
No they aren't. They're insectivors.
@Bees, actually, Eulipotyphla is not a valid taxon, hedgehogs belong to the order Erinaceomorpha along with the gymnures and extinct amphilemurids, whilst shrews belong to the order Soricomorpha alongside the more fairly similar moles, desmans, and solenodons, in fact, both orders Soricomorpha and Erinaceomorpha belong to the superorder Laurasiatheria, but these two orders are not closely related at all, the order Soricomorpha is more closely related to bats and is grouped with them under the clade Typhlofera, whereas the order Erinaceomorpha is more closely related to pangolins and carnivorans and is grouped with them under the clade Acutodontia within the broader lineage Archonychia, so the similarities between the orders Soricomorpha and Erinaceomorpha are actually a result of convergent evolution.
