Troy, you have such a way with filming your adventures, and they are becoming more and more addictive to watch. They are so mouth watering that I am now planning my first solo trip. Although I wont have Maddy with me. And she looks like half the fun.
Great v,ids Troy ... You got me hooked and looking forward to my trips to the gonk park :) Vids on your dehydrated food prep and in depth gear reviews would be as highly valued as the vids you already have posted. Looking forward to the rest of the series. -Q
Hello Troy; water Iodine tables can be made up super concentrated and "painted" on areas that are infected to help heal the infection. I keep a few in my first aid kit for this use.
If ever you get the chance to get to Victoria or South Australia you should do the Murray River. I have done the South Australian section and I can guarantee....NO Portaging at all.
I know the toe thing is a killer.I have had that same thing happen through out my life.I just take a razor shar knife or clippers and make a cut and then get a tight hold with something and rip it out.Next drain out any infection if any apply triple antibiotic ointment.Next cut a V into the end of toenail to allow the nail to grow into the middle of toe.Last wrap with a sterile bandade.Fills so much better when weight is applied thats just me.But this is a killer video series thanks for sharing.
@ewaking Actually, the infections didn't last that long, it was the damage it did to the nail that lingered. A good bit of your nail is inside your toe and with an infection like that it bends it and messes it up before it grows out. So when it does grow, it comes in all wonky. Anyhow, no worse for the wear. It was all healed up in a month or so.
iv just seen yer vid it was great but you state your vid is your solo 8 day trip but you had your best friend maddy as some one who lost there best friend on wednesday it was wonderfull to see her asleep in her bed best wishes hardy
Infected fingers/toes are NOT fun. I really felt for you when you showed the toe. I've also had these and they really do hurt. Usually once they start to drain the pain is much less.
I have been with folks and had myself " fish toe". Take a sharp clean needle and force it under the nail in the area of infection. The puss will start to drain, then irrigate with hydrogen peroxide or very clean soap and water. I always carry an irrigation syringe. Once I went to dry feet boots I never had the problem again. Great series, thank you!
Crazy...8 months damn. Like i was saying i had a bad big toe infection a few years back lasted a month or so, soaked it in salt water every night. Those toe infections are brutal. yours worse then most obviously. hope its all good now. I even cut "V's" in the nail to try to grow it thinner.
The toe, I can't help but relate so much.. I have had the exact as you describe, as I'm on my way to a week long business trip, airports, factories, walking from the hotel to the car, etc.. I recall thinking, really?? A toe!! this thing can wreak such havoc and pain! :) Hope you recovered quickly ( I had to take antibiotics). Really enjoyed your series here, Your dog is so perfect amazing. We are from Dundas (Hamilton area) and want to take on such an adventure. Got so much great ideas and inspiration from your vids. All the best
@LlamaEnigma Thanks LlamaEnigma, I really appreciate that. I'm glad to hear you're going to try it for yourself, I hope you enjoy as much as The Goose and I do. All the best.
awesome videos, sir. dang-it, i have tried to watch this episode #9 three different days now & same result every time. 10 secs of video followed by 10 secs of the spinning pizza of death. i actually muscled thru about 10 minutes this way. can't take anymore. stupid internet
Might you or someone who is following these wonderful videos please help me to understand the portage numbers that you are sharing: i.e a 1200 and a 2300. Thanks!!!
Had the same happen to me on a kayak trip last year. I took my wife's bag as an extra pack and she had one of her extra pads. So after I dressed it I put part of that pad on with duck tape and it worked out well. It kept my large toe from rubbing the side of my shoe at least..lol
Im not sure the brand of internal frame backpack your using or maybe its overloaded and causing the failures but you may want to reconsider....its poor quality for sure! The webbing has poor stitching and epic fail on the buckles! Good improvising on your part though! Look at the Kelty packs, Osprey, Gregory, Arcteryx, or Deluth packs! And you wont have those sort of problems you experienced. Great videos and thanks for sharing!!
Had exact same problem with my big toes (both) years ago, especially the right one, every backpack trip into the high country meant inflamed, tender, infected toes so finally had them taken out by podiatrist after taking wedges out a couple of times was only a temporary fix. Problem solved :D
Bummer about your toe! Plantain weed is good in cases like this when you're out in nature and you don't have any antiseptic or antibiotic cream. Just chew it up and put the crushed leaves on your toe (and it should help to draw out any infection). The stuff grows everywhere.
Hey there from across the big pond in England! Im re visiting your great vidz. Are you still ojt there doing stuff?!be great to see some trips in the future lkke this one.. all the best K hope your well..
Looks like and sounds like Gout. 4-tabs of Naproxen Sodium (220mg each) will relive the pain and allow you to continue, but you will need to address this issue with diet.
Not to sure if you have ever done any trips from access point 4. just wanted any advice on that section. cool. planning a three or four day loop or there and back. just don't know how bad currents and flows are. any help would be great. thanks
@ewaking It turned out to indeed be an infection but not an ingrown nail. It was deeper in, the doctor couldn't tell me the exact source. Anyhow, there was enough pressure from the swelling that it messed up the nail that was in my toe and took about eight months to sort itself out. Had a bent up crooked 'ol nail for growing in for a while lol.
U can do a V-cute on the top centre of your toenail and file it down in this area, do not cut the sides at all of toe nail, it'll just make it the infection worst,U can do this with toe nail clippers, . If u do this the infection most likely will go away as it takes the pressure off the sides of the toe :)
Why would you work so hard to get into a lake , stay one day then leave? Enjoy yourself out there man. Its not about how many miles you can go in a day/how hard your day is.

TH-cam recommended this vid to me. So glad! I'm looking forward to it!! I did a 4 day 3 night portage in Algonquin park last summer
hahahahaha that was hilarious at the end....just what the doctor ordered!
i really loved that spoon you made! :)

I've never heard of dehydrated hamburger. That meal looked very tasty.

great video. what are the foam wedges for
They say when you cut your toe nails. Don't cut it all the way back to avoid ingrown toes. just a suggestion

Is that dehydrated beef mixture (gravel? lol) store bought or how did you make it?

What he means by 1200 would be meters. 1000 m = 1 kilometer

He kinda sounds like Steve Martin.

@akroeze More like time losing meaning when you're prepping videos at 2:00am lol. Thanks though... fixed it up.
