I gotta say Kev… you are definitely one of the most badass TH-cam Canoeists out there ( and I watch them all!) That was not an easy trip … and you just seem to power through. Impressive! Keep them coming 🛶……
I love finding a new- to -me TH-camr who takes me back to trips we took many years ago to Quetico and Killarney. Later on I took up kayaking and explored vast areas of Northern Lake Huron and Lake Superior. Sadly, 2 hip replacements and a knee coming up in a few days has ended my tripping. I can relive some memories watching your excellent films. I also thank you very much for only having the sounds of nature, not blasting music. The bit at the end was nice.
Ok. I have to comment even though I'm not finished watching. Those tree roots upheaving in the wind on the Big Bob campsite. wow! (and I have a feeling I know what's coming up on Day 3-- the Nippising alders! I've had the pleasure a couple of times 😉)
Great job capturing the difficulty of the route! Especially the “alder section” of the upper Nipissing. I did The Meanest Link last June and made a rudimentary video (making distance was priority #1 so it was mostly just a GoPro strapped to my head). We travelled from Tim Lake to the High Dam camp site in one day so your footage from day 1 to day 4 brought back a lot of memories. I actually started recognizing the route from the portage landing at Chibiabos Lake! I can only imagine how difficult it was doing this solo and in that crazy wind/cold temps! I was feeling your pain! Shoulder season trips take so much more time due to unpredictable weather. Have you ever tried neoprene gloves for paddling? I do a lot of shoulder season tripping and they have been a game changer for paddling in cold temps! Thanks for the beautiful footage of a very tough route! Cheers!
Sorry for the late reply! Just got back from an 8-day canoe trip. That's an incredible achievement Stephanie! You can be very proud of yourself for completing it! I'm going to check out your video. For something like the Meanest-Link a gopro is definitely the way to go. I'm now carrying close to 30lbs of camera related gear and batteries lol. But when I did the "Brent Run" challenge across Algonquin a few years ago all I brought was my iPhone - and the video still turned out okay in my opinion 😄
@@kevinthewild no worries! Tripping comes first! 30lb of camera gear is a lot!! That’s definitely the price to pay for your high quality videos. Kudos for doing this loop with all that extra weight (not to mention the extra work of filming it all in great detail!). I saw your Brent Run video as well. The wolf/moose footage was awesome! I’d say that video turned out better than just ok! The Brent Run is high on my list of trips I’d like to do. I’m looking forward to your next video. Cheers!
Hey brother, I’ve been living your videos! I’ll be taking a trip in a couple weeks to algonquin solo and then temagami a few weeks later. I would LOVE to see what kind of gear you use, I think a video would be amazing but even if you were just willing to share in a post some of the gear you bring along with you it would really help those you have inspired!
Hey Joey. Just got back from a canoe trip. Glad you are enjoying my videos. I'll think about making a gear video but in the meantime feel free to ask me any specific questions. Cheers!
Kev, I can't thank you enough for sharing your adventures! Algonquin Park has always been my heaven on earth and even though my interior days are over because of back and knee problems , I can re live my experiences through your videos ! It actually gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes when I see your videos!! You are SO GREAT at filming and you're always so enjoyable to listen to as well. I miss Algonquin so bad but thanks to you I will never forget my times in the park ! I love these longer episodes, please don't stop , and keep going as long as your body let's you ! You are my favorite thing to watch at home !!!!
Great video Kevin and the snow looks peaceful from my living room with a warm coffee in my hands. I see you have a different boat from your other videos and I am considering the same one but the other ones you used I think were lightweight Kevlar boats and this one is much beefier and heavier. I mostly do the same type of tripping as you do and very little white water but the price point on this boat matches my budget. How do you find it for portaging longer distances like 1-2km? Is it doable or do you wish for something lighter? I’d really appreciate your feedback.
Thanks Cliff. Yes my new canoe is an Esquif Prospecteur 15'. It's a great all-around canoe, but at 60lbs you will definitely feel it on the portages. If you are going to be doing mostly flat-water trips with many (or long) portages, I would still recommend a lighter composite boat. But I think it's also very dependant on the person. Some people will struggle portaging a T-Formex boat. I have to say though - it's nice not having to baby my canoe 😄.
@@kevinthewild I have to say I noticed you dragging it a lot and that almost seemed like a selling feature for me since any of the Kevlar or Carbon boats I feel you worry about damaging them or the coating and every time you go over a beaver dam or come in hard to a rocky site you worry so much about damaging it. My boat is now 55lbs and that is 60 and I am in about similar shape as you so while I wish for lighter on the 1-2km portages I also wish for more worry free maintenance over the rocks and bumps . It’s also a great price and half of what a Kevlar 15 foot boat is.
@cliffspicer6555 well if your current boat is 55lbs then absolutely! It feels nice on the water, good balance between tracking well and maneuverability. I’m really enjoying it. And yes the price is great when compared to other options 👍
Thanks for taking this trip for our viewing pleasure! I would have hoped you had food in your car for when you returned, just in case you got off the water famished, like you did…
Awesome dude, super well done!!! Testing conditions to build a great appetite for that first meal back in town! Nice palace tent lol. Algonquin is so beautiful in all conditions!!
Kev, another great adventure and I commend you for tackling a tough route for your opening trip. I just got back yesterday from 6 days in the interior of the Park and also had a mixed bag of weather but no snow storms lol. I note how your kit is progressing, eventually we all get to the same place and double carry to have a few comforts or to have the right gear for the conditions and planned trip. Those two cheese burgers got me too thinking I should treat myself more often 🙂 The Esquif looks good rigged solo and a big change from the lightweight Swift P14 for sure. I look forward to seeing where the new boat takes you. Thanks again for editing these as Its a lot of work but your final output is always top notch. Cheers man and see you on the water one day.
Nice! Hope you had a good trip! Yeah I'm enjoying the Esquif P15 so far. Double carrying its not a big deal - just slows me down a bit. But like you said, it allows me to bring some extra gear which is nice. See you out there!
Making us wait months for a new adventure is not always pleasant. 😅 But that's exactly why the moment a video arrives is even greater. Really wild trip man. 👌👌👌Greetings
I'm enjoying it so far. The obvious drawback is that it's double the weight of a solo kevlar canoe. But it feels good on the water, gives me a lot of extra space, and it's virtually indestructible - which is good for me because I am hard on my gear 😄.
@@kevinthewild Super. I love my Esquif Cargo 17’. I am looking for a lighter small tandem for the back lakes a few portages in. Thanks. Enjoy. Love your videos
Thank you! I wasn't concerned with any of my food spoiling given the cold temperatures on this trip. I try to keep all my food well sealed and I hang my food bag at night so that it is out of the reach of bears.
Hi Kev!! Excited to see you back on the water! Been looking forward to a new upload. What crazy weather?! But just lovely to watch and share your adventure. There was something so surreal and beautiful about the stillness and silence at around 49:36, when the wind died down and you sailed into your next campsite. Thank you Joseph. Yes I’m doing well. I hope you are too. I’ve been slowly working away on a big trip video from this summer, and I hope to go on a couple more trips before the season is over.
I don't even canoe, but I love seeing videos of people who do. Especially those who live in Canada. The landscapes are magnificent, whatever the season. The tranquility of nature, the beautiful campsites, the difficulty of the terrain, the portages and the good food by the campfire! It is with great pleasure that I will follow your upcoming adventures Kev.
This morning I was thinking "I hope Kev does a new trip soon" and tada! 😂 Thanks for the Sunday gift 🎁 And thanks for being such a positive model and inspiration! I'm doing my first ever canoe camping trip in Algonquin (solo!) this June, thanks to you 😊
Hey Kev new subscriber here. Love the channel and the quality of your videos is amazing! Watched them all and then some. Looked to be a cold one, but you did it! Well done! That US Military Extreme Cold Weather parka made a difference I bet. Worn mine in some cold windy temps. Look forward to the next videos!!
Dude! I didn’t know you had chocolate chip pancakes! Yea.. I’ll be right over! I have a plate and that same spoon!😃. I was wondering about your bushbuddy stove. How do you like it? I have the solo lite which I know is the copy of that which I found out after I bought it😬. Anyway… I was going to ask you how you sleep at night so well? I have so much anxiety when I’m sleeping in the woods solo. Also… can you use a windscreen with your cartridge stove? I thought I read somewhere that a windscreen with those cartridge stoves will compromise the seal where you screw the stove into the tank causing a failure. I don’t know anything about them personally. I’m a twig stove nut and if it’s a rainy trip I put the trangia burner inside my firebox nano and use my homemade windscreen out of a disposable turkey roasting pan. I’ve cooked a lot of bacon on my cast iron pan with that setup on carcamping trips. Hey.. this was an awesome watch and your vids really bring it home for me that paddling season is just around the corner. I’m a yakker…😁 I just don’t have the paddling stroke knowledge that you Canadian canoutubers possess. It’s fun watching you guys maneuver those canoes around like you do. Take care man and we’ll see you again. NQU
The Bushbuddy stove works well - probably exactly like your solo stove. It's very efficient and burns hot and fast - the only downside being that you need to constantly be feeding it. When I'm feeling tired and lazy after a long day I will usually just use the canister stove. You definitely can use a windshield, I will sometimes use my foam pad as a wind block to make it more efficient on windy days. I don't have any issues sleeping at night, but I do stay aware as I've had moose and bears approach my camp during the night. Anytime I hear something large I just shout loudly a few times from my tent and that always does the trick. Chocolate chips in my pancakes are a must until blueberry season arrives! Really glad to hear you enjoyed the video! Take care.
1:07:16 I just made a smoked sausage sandwich with two fried eggs , two slices of cheese, and garlic mayo on toasted 12 grain bread. I was inspired by your dehydrated lasagna…..Tom
welcome back from hibernation kev! just wondering if you can do a video tutorial on booking canoe lake and what would be good items to bring on my first trip?
Thank you! Backcountry reservations are fairly simple to make. Just go to the reservations section of the Ontario Parks website and select your dates and the lakes you want to camp on. I'd be happy to answer anything specific regarding gear, but I don't see it needing to be different for your first trip than any other trip. One of the most import things is to make sure you have some emergency / nighttime sleeping closed stored safely in a dry bag. Never wear those clothes during the day. That way you will always have something dry to change into, even after the wettest of days. Also, make sure your sleeping pad and sleeping bag are warm enough for the conditions.
It always feels good if you can (safely) skip a portage. I have heard that some people get a wind on their back. Thanks for documenting that it truly is possible
These were all trout lakes, and the season was still closed at the time. For bears, I store my food safely at night, and I bring bear spray in addition to my knife.
Another great video! Your passion for tripping always comes through in your videos. If you tou don't mind, what size is that green Osprey pack? I'm currently using a 100L+ pack and im considering getting something smaller for solo trips. Thanks
You should try the presidents choice sweet with heat mustard just to wake up your taste buds every once in a while 👍🏻 You forgot to yell YARD SALE! when you dumped your bag at 20:30-ish lol
Kevin, I realized I didn't finish watching this video from when it first came out. I was wondering if you've had a chance to use your tent a few more times. I was looking at slightly larger tent than my Big Agnes with a couple inches more headroom. I almost bought this tent ( it was on sale too!) but a few reviews mentioned water running down the fly when opened and into the tent during heavy rains. Any thoughts or experience with this? I enjoy your videos. Finished this one - looked like a dilly of a trip! Thanks for taking us along!
I have used the tent on another trip, but I haven't had to deal with torrential downpours with it yet. But I know what video you are referring to. Either way, Im normally quick to enter and exit my tent when it's raining so I don't think it will be much of an issue for me. MEC has incredible sales on their gear so yes you can get this at a bargain. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@kevinthewild Thanks, I often have my Aquaquest tarp set up covering the tent and giving me a good area to sit under and cook if raining so that would solve an issue like that too. I'll give it further thought. Safe travels
Hello Kev, just came across your channel and this was a fantastic video. The scenery was so amazing and that weather wow. I am hitting up the Eastern Pines loop in June so cannot wait for that. Cheers and subbed!
Hey Kev! So great to see your video post this weekend! Hope you had a good winter! Quite a first trip to start your season! Super tough conditions for sure but there was so much beauty as well! Welcome back and I’ll be looking forward to all of your adventures this year! Take care!
Wow! Panama! I've encountered bears and wolves on my trips. We are not permitted to carry firearms in Provincial and National Parks here in Canada. The black bears and wolves here are normally afraid of humans, but I bring bear spray and a knife for protection.
Juju. I think is terrible. I practice bikepacking in my country. Im afraid of coyotes , jaguar and snake. But when you are outside is great. Sorry my bad English
Thanks as always! I love the Swift Prospector 14'. It's super light, stable, fun to paddle, and is a perfect solo canoe for Algonquin, Killarney, Quetico. I picked up this Prospecteur 15' to be able to include some river travel in some of my trips. I am also enjoying the extra room I now have to store the extra gear I'm bringing. I'm constantly tweaking my loadouts - but that's part of the fun.
@@kevinthewild Congratulations! It is a beauty. Wishing you great adventures, and many wonderful memories on the water with it in the future. As always, looking forward to more videos from you!
I imagine it’s similar to a prospector 15, but a bit faster on the water and less susceptible to windage with less freeboard. 37 lbs is a nice weight 👍. I’m in Toronto.
Have you ever run into Sasquatch? What part of the country are you in? I miss my canoe so bad. I lost track of it when I was a young traveling man. ….Tom
Every year the backcountry opens based on the office ice-out date. The Algonquin Park website announces it. They allow earlier reservations to be made if ice-out occurs before the scheduled May opening date. I believe it was April 13th this year.
A connector on my carbon poles failed and it took months for me to receive a warranty replacement. I've seen others have the same issue. Justin Barbour had his fail 3 times. Aside from that it's a good tent. Just wish it had a full mesh upper (simply my preference). Thanks for the comment!
Nice shot of those roots heaving , never seen that before!! I work outside in T.O. and April was Brutal!!!!!!! Rain / High winds / temperature all over the place, so bad I lost time and my plans for first ever spring trip in there with you at that time!! bummed out!! Opinion... In that weather, cheap clear ski googles! cuts the cold wind from your eyes paddling and branch protection from Alder or when tearing through the bush looking for wood! One poke in the eye could really suck.
Yeah the weather and wind was wild. That's how it goes sometimes Brent. Not sure if my video confirms that it was the right decision for you to cancel your trip 😄. And I actually forgot my sunglasses in the car, they would have helped as well. But good advice 👍
Crazy trip, Kev. You capture so much beauty and peace but also transport the feeling of the cold and the effort. It´s like beeing on the trip with you. I absolutely love all of your videos! Is that dry bag the 115l Slogg? Do you like it?

You do great videos. Show all aspects of canoe traveling. Also very cool to see the great gear you use- informative. The camera work is perfect- and the camera you use is awesome. Don’t know what it is- think GoPro.
Kevin, I’ve watched and enjoyed a number of your videos. I do have a thing on this video. My hard and fast rule, in the early spring, is get off the water when white caps are present. The water is always in hypothermic conditions in early spring. Then again, I’m old and maybe overly cautious. Stay safe.
Nice. I like the slower pace to your video. These parts when nature is filmed 55:45 from a tripod are well done and makes us feel present. Keep it up, have persistence and your channel will grow.
Thanks for sharing! Looked very challenging with that weather. I went into Linda Lake for an overnighter on the opener. It was warmer but rained a bit.
The opening drone shot was taken outside of park boundaries. I hope you enjoy the video!

Sounds delicious!
Genial 🎉😂
welcome back from hibernation kev!
just wondering if you can do a video tutorial on booking canoe lake and what would be good items to bring on my first trip?
@@kevinthewild wow thank you for the tip! I'd never thought of that! I'll make sure grab a dry bag thank you!
Thanks for sharing this and congrats on a great accomplishment. Stunning country 🙌
Thank you!
You made my Sunday Kev, wonderful trip video as always!!!
Glad to hear Derek!
Hey Kev, great 🥶trip and video. what's the name/brand of that vest you wear?
Thanks! My PFD is an Astral E-Ronny.
It always feels good if you can (safely) skip a portage. I have heard that some people get a wind on their back. Thanks for documenting that it truly is possible
Lol! Yes it does happen sometimes 😄
I noticed you didnt do any fishing that could help you with your food intake. Thanks for sharing by the way your not worried about bears or wolves?
These were all trout lakes, and the season was still closed at the time. For bears, I store my food safely at night, and I bring bear spray in addition to my knife.
Great vid.. subscribed. Can yo tell me where you got that PFD?
Thank you. The PFD is an Astral E-Ronny.
Welcome back brother! 🙌
🍻
Another great video! Your passion for tripping always comes through in your videos. If you tou don't mind, what size is that green Osprey pack? I'm currently using a 100L+ pack and im considering getting something smaller for solo trips. Thanks
Thank you! My Osprey is and 85 Litre Aether AG. I've abused it for years and not a single issue with it.
@@kevinthewild thanks
You should try the presidents choice sweet with heat mustard just to wake up your taste buds every once in a while 👍🏻
You forgot to yell YARD SALE! when you dumped your bag at 20:30-ish lol
Lol. And I'll give that a try! I really like French's Honey Chipotle mustard too - but decided to go with the regular stuff for this trip.
I was in park at a similar time as you I even wanted to start at Tim but route was closed so I went to different access point
Nice. Hope you enjoyed your trip!
Great trip thanks for sharing! How many liters is your canoe pack?
Thank you! The Yellow Dry Bag is 115 litres. It’s made by MEC.
Hello Kev, just came across your channel and this was a fantastic video. The scenery was so amazing and that weather wow. I am hitting up the Eastern Pines loop in June so cannot wait for that. Cheers and subbed!
Awesome! June is a great time to spot wildlife. Just make sure not to forget your bug spray!
Wow, simply wow my friend 🔥🔥
Thank you!
That was a great video. Cheers from Norway 👍🙂
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed!
@@kevinthewild Subbed to your channel 👍🙂
Much appreciated!
Hey Kev! So great to see your video post this weekend! Hope you had a good winter! Quite a first trip to start your season! Super tough conditions for sure but there was so much beauty as well! Welcome back and I’ll be looking forward to all of your adventures this year! Take care!
Thanks Terry! I hope you have some awesome adventures this year as well!
Best pancake flip! 🥞 Love your videos!
Thank you! 😄
Great video! Ah spring weather, 1-2 good days for every 4-5 crap days of weather. I'm ready for summer adventure season.
Yup. Spring weather is rarely great. But after a long winter I'll take what I can get 😄.
Wao . Incredible. Amazing trip. Greetings from Panama. 🇵🇦. What about the bears 🐻 or wolfs?
Wow!
@yurihuertavasquez9544 I would be afraid of Jaguars!!
What make/model is your electronic box. Thanks…great clip!
Thanks! It's a Pelican 1400.
Just discovered your channel, amazing video! Subbed! May I ask what camera or cameras you were using to film this? Shots look amazing!
Another great trip and video, Kev! I noticed that you replaced your canoe already - can you share any details regarding your switch?
@bampotbampot thank you my friend!
Great! Thank you
Genial 🎉😂
Gracias!
Great trip, Jack, RI, USA
Thanks John!
Great video cheers from ontario
Thanks Ryan 🍻
Ive always used three man tents. Plenty of room for you, gear ,boots ect and even room for another person if needed
Done the route a few times .And yes in some terrible winds . I use a 15 ft bob special at 37 lbs.
I’ve always wanted to try a bobs special. Wonder how it paddles in comparison to a P15.
@@kevinthewild Where are you located ? I haven't used the canoe in years . Everyone who has paddled it has liked it .
I imagine it’s similar to a prospector 15, but a bit faster on the water and less susceptible to windage with less freeboard. 37 lbs is a nice weight 👍. I’m in Toronto.
@@kevinthewild That's about it . The difference in weight would be the big thing. Allows you to single trip. The canoe is in Mississauga
Have you ever run into Sasquatch?
What part of the country are you in?
I miss my canoe so bad. I lost track of it when I was a young traveling man.
….Tom
You sound like Joe Robinet. Dang 😮
I like Joe
Nice to see another local guy exploring
I thought Algonquin backcountry doesn't open until 2nd weekend in May?? I may be wrong but I recall that from my early days tripping
Every year the backcountry opens based on the office ice-out date. The Algonquin Park website announces it. They allow earlier reservations to be made if ice-out occurs before the scheduled May opening date. I believe it was April 13th this year.
@@kevinthewild thank you! I did not know that.
@wills5047 No problem. They even have a live feed in the spring of Lake of Two Rivers so that you can see how far the melt has progressed.
Pretty hard to beat the hubba hubba. Had one for a few years. Absolutely perfect.
I feel worse. That one snowy morning would have maybe been the nicest experience you could have in there!
@brentkelly5445 yeah that morning was quite magical. Hopefully you can squeeze in an extra trip at some point this year to make up for it!
What's the animal at the end of the video?
That was an otter 🦦
I'd be camping every 600 m.
😂
yeah i love the fire so i would set up a tarp near it and sleep on the ground. on top of fir boughs
Wow those are some pretty brutal paddling conditions Kev! Well done for making it through that. Loved that video Kev! Keep them coming!
Thank you Matt!
Crazy trip, Kev. You capture so much beauty and peace but also transport the feeling of the cold and the effort. It´s like beeing on the trip with you. I absolutely love all of your videos! Is that dry bag the 115l Slogg? Do you like it?
Sorry for the late reply - I was away on another trip. So glad you enjoyed it Kerstin! Yes that is the 115 litre MEC Slogg HD. It's been great so far!
There's nothing quite like stinky cheese in the woods! Awesome video, Kev! I love the Tim River access. I have had some great trips outta there.
Hahaha! Thanks Dave! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to this season 🍻
Did this exact loop between may 9-12. Such a scenic route, but those alders along the Nipissing were a real challenge lol. Nice job on the video dude.
Very cool! I'm sure it was a great trip!
Hi. I'm a new subscriber. I just came across your channel today. The pics you have at the beginning of day 4 are absolutely stunning. I can only imagine what it was like to see in person. Thanks for sharing your trip!
Yeah that was an incredible morning. Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the sub!
Another great (crazy weather) vid Kev, I like to pack wraps for breakfast and luches on my outings - I'll have to try your summer sausage / old stinky combo : )
Thank you!
You do great videos. Show all aspects of canoe traveling. Also very cool to see the great gear you use- informative. The camera work is perfect- and the camera you use is awesome. Don’t know what it is- think GoPro.
Thanks Douglas!
Nice video and nature 😊😊😊
Thank you!
I’m interested
Fantastic video
Thank you!
Very cool trip btw...I've been to those lakes!
Thank you!
Kevin,
I’ve watched and enjoyed a number of your videos. I do have a thing on this video. My hard and fast rule, in the early spring, is get off the water when white caps are present. The water is always in hypothermic conditions in early spring. Then again, I’m old and maybe overly cautious. Stay safe.
I agree with you Ron. I did take a bit of a risk there with that one crossing on my first day. Thank you for your comment.
Thank you for sharing your adventure, Kev! Thank you for taking my wife and I along. You really captured this beautiful country. Cheers!
Thank you as always Dan! I'm glad you both enjoyed.
Nice. I like the slower pace to your video. These parts when nature is filmed 55:45 from a tripod are well done and makes us feel present. Keep it up, have persistence and your channel will grow.
Thanks for your feedback! I'm really glad you enjoyed!
Chào bạn yêu rất vui được xem video của bạn ❤
Thanks for sharing! Looked very challenging with that weather. I went into Linda Lake for an overnighter on the opener. It was warmer but rained a bit.
Glad to hear you’ve been able to make it out once already!
I’m an avid kayaker… here in Maine! So, I really enjoy watching so many TH-camrs doing what I LOVE!❤️
So glad to hear that! I've been to Maine, it's a beautiful state!
Epic adventure as always Kev! can't wait for our annual trip buddy. Looking forward to what you got in store for us this year.
Thanks buddy! Looking forward to it as well!

You Canadians ♥️ are so blessed 😊
I agree and I will never take it for granted. Thank you for commenting 😊
hey kev! we have been watching all your videos but we would love that you bring back the map so we can use your trip to plan ours 😊
Noted! I do have the route in the description though.
i dont understand directions unless you explain them to me with a map and a stick 😂
@christianaberer2172 😂
Hard work! thank you I'm enjoying this. I'll probably never do this!
Glad you enjoyed Ellie!
Good canoe tripping video but a little too much food prep and eating.
