1:35 my university had something like this go around, asking you to login at another site with your email and password. We sent it over to the IT department so they could see who was trying to scam people and issue a warning.
It was a real email from the university administration.
Please note, even if you think your school's administration is as stupid as mine, don't click the link, forward it to someone in IT. If it's fake, they'll want to look into it. If it's real, they'll really, REALLY want to look into it.

Whenever I receive a Steam scam on Discord I reply with "Let me guess: Someone is impersonating me on Steam, scamming others and you now 'accidentally' reported me to Steam Support for that. Now you want to revert this but the only way would be for me to click a shady link that legit isn't steam support at all?"

FYE got me with that. Asked me for my email to sign me up and give me 10% off that day. I used a credit card that day so I never really checked or noticed that I had been charged $12 each month for about 6 months. When I called to complain and get it cancelled, they said “you signed up for it willingly, so there’s no refund.” When I expressed no one told me it was a damn membership, they wouldn’t listen. Just cancelled it and hung up on me.

@hmnhntr I used to work at FYE, company policy was to hand someone a pamphlet with all the info about the card and telling the first month is free and they can cancel in 7 days. (We would circle the customer service number for people to do that at my store)
But shady stores will pull bullshit tactics like that to boost their store numbers, my stores honesty had us with the lowest loyalty in the district and we were constantly being yelled at about it until we were eventually shut down 3 years ago.
I'm so glad to be no longer working for FYE, i will never work for them again because of several reasons and that disgusting loyalty program and the magazine scam are just the tip of the iceberg of gripes I have with them

Hey Robin, at 5:40 they are referring to how people who are scamming you often say kindly over and over again, I assume it’s because since the elderly see it as “respectful” and make them positively apply trustworthy traits to them, since “Someone would never scam when they are asking me to do something so peacefully and I confrontational.” I look at it as manipulative and a dead giveaway that they are trying to pull a fast one on me.

    pro anti scamming tip:
big companies basically NEVER start by sending a person to message you about an issue.
typically if there is an issue they will simple shut down your access and then redirect you to a place you can ask for assistance (point being that they aren't bothered to give you personalized pre warnings, its either auto generated or you don't get a warning at all).

Personally, I've ran into the fake check one before but from a "job", however, I typically try to get enough info from them before reporting them to the company they're pretending to be and the FTC. Always report whatever you can to the FTC as well (Or your countries equivalent that handles matters on the Internet).

12:36 a romance scam is where some person claims to be some woman who starts flirting with you over dms on fb, insta, snap, etc, constantly asking for small or large sums of money to be transferred electronically, by paypal, or other etransfer sites, while the scammer claims to come meet up irl, but never does, while still requesting money for "bills" or some other nonexistent item. it's basically catfishing with money involved.

Warning to any artist regarding this scam
It starts as a normal art commission then they are going to try and do the ‘email check’ payment or some other shady way of paying.
It’s super annoying especially if your doing commissions bc your low on cash

Not really a scam but a massive fail: I once ordered a vacuum from Walmart. The first package got delivered somewhere, so I reported it and they shipped a second. It was taking too long so I called the delivery company and they told me Walmart... hadn't put a delivery address on it. Just a city and state. So, when I called they put the address on it and sent it to me. That is why I don't order from Walmart anymore.

Since this is r/scams, I have a story from a few weeks ago that I feel like would fit here:
Me, a friend, and my two younger brothers went out to a gas station for some snacks and a walk and it was getting cold and dark, so my friend called for an Uber to take us home. When the Uber driver pulled up, he requested 10$ to take all four of us home when my friend already paid for the Uber ride. Thankfully, my friend called out the driver's scam behavior that day and I learned to look out for scams like that one.

Here in Canada, I get a call every couple of months saying that a package I ordered has been intercepted and is being held by border services because it contains illegal items. Love how this is a robo call! It then says to press 1 to talk to someone. So I do, and when they ask for my name I tell them that I'm Agent Davis of Canadian Border Services Agency. I swear I heard one guy choke on his drink as he scrambled to hang up on me!🤣

I work at a post office, and I have no idea how many people I prevented from being scammed. It's always the same scam, they sell something valuable, send it abroad, and as soon as the scammer has the tracking info, they retract the money or the receipt they send turns out to be fake. There's at least three cases a year when people come in, asking for the parcel, because they were scammed. The lucky ones can get it back or are fast enough for the postal services to stop it.

I worked in retail and I hated it when older people came in wanting to buy $500 in gift cards (Target, apple, etc.) Saying it was for their grandchild's birthday. I always hoped their credit cards never went through. I asked so many times, " Did someone call you and say you need to pay them through these means or you will be in trouble with the IRS or social security? " Always no. I'm so glad I don't trust anyone enough to fall for this bs.

    • @Max-ox5jd
      @Max-ox5jd ปีที่แล้ว

I don't understand the need of everyone to gift gift cards anyways. It's very inconvenient to get it like that because you are forced to use it in a certain store, in a certain time frame, maybe even for certain items (like, can only use it in the rl store and not in the internet shop which has way more items). Either I will have to buy more stuff to fully use the card, or it will have still some small money on it.
I always hated it. Just give me the money directly, I can really use it (who can't?) and I definitely will think of you when I finally decide to buy something nice from it. And I can use it literally everywhere for everything, even if I "just" buy everyday stuff I will enjoy it pretty much. But I likely will do something special with it and tell you how nice it was. I don't think it's lame or too easy of you to "just" give money. It's not impersonal or so, as I specifically want it like that and can do way more individual stuff with it that way. And you could just wrap it up nicely if it bothers you and I will even like it more. Like, fold it in a flower shape, or something else, hide it in a puzzle box, change it into coins and put it in a bottle, whatever, use your imagination a bit. Just don't give me stupid gift cards which I have lying around for months with no use.

I've had two scams via text saying I had to pay a toll fee. I don't use toll roads. I told one to go play in traffic. I immediately blocked the second. A few years ago, I got a call from a supposed bank, telling me about something. Thing is, it wasn't my bank and I asked "is this a scam?" He replied with something I couldn't make out and then said "bye" and hung up. I had another call a week or so ago telling me about some transaction I made that was $1000. The thing is, that money is being saved to fix my car. I have not made any purchases of anything that's $1000. The call, this time, was automated and not a person like the other scam. I had panicked, thinking someone stole the money I'm trying to save, and the call ended while I was in my bank app. All my money was still there.

The "mag" bit was the same...up to 3 free magazines for some period of time, auto-charged subscription to the card you paid with if you don't cancel.
