Neil said he wrote this in a afternoon. Some people had come over to his and his wife's house to hang out and he was just in one of those moods where he wanted to be alone...so he left them in one room and went into another by himself....and this song flowed out of nowhere. He's so fantastic.

I remember the 80s pretty well my friend. It was my childhood but it was a reality. Things were different, calmer and more fun. The world seemed so relaxed and people weren't so displeased with everything. We actually didn't survive by keeping our phones in our pockets, we wrote letters and had pen pals. We walked miles to go see friends and stayed out till the sun went completely down. Neighbors got along in most neighborhoods and we even had occasional neighborhood parties. I think about the 80s often. I'm blessed I was a part of it.

A beautiful song, one of my all time favourites. Always loved that instrumental break, so concise and perfect. Crowded House were a great live band, and the inter- band banter and the wonderful rapport with their audience was always great fun. It was so sad when the original drummer, Paul Hester, committed suicide in 2005, he was always clowning about on stage, but it clearly masked a recurring depression. I wish he could have taken this song to his heart, and not let his demons win.

Well said. In the 1980's we had no idea that pop and rock music would soon start to drop in quality. Today it's barely music at all and it stimulates no deeper feelings or thoughts. TH-cam channels like yours are keeping great music alive and in a place where youngsters can access it. Personally, I don't think that rock is dead but that it will eventually evolve into something that kids can hook into again.

Hi from England. Crowded House has always been one of my favourite bands and this is definitely one of their best songs, but there are lots of great ones. Try reacting to Distant Sun or Four Seasons in One Day.

Totally agree!! The 80s music was the absolute best of all the decades! I'm 58 years old, so I remembef the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90, 2000s, etc. But the 80s were the best (both in music and in life & partys).

It's funny - I grew up in the 1970s/1980s and I talked about the *1960s* the way you talk about the 80s! I became obsessed with the music and culture of the 60s and wished I hadn't missed them.

Neil Finn is, in my opinion, the greatest lyricists ever in our modern age. I'm mainly a metal guy, but Crowded House songs transport me immediately to me and my Dad crooning away in the car going here and there. I saw their (1st) Farewell to the World concert at the Opera House and it was utterly amazing.
For those of you interested, it's on youtube - search for 'crowded house farewell to the world'. They played this song as the closer, and it absolutely brought the house down.

I always loved this song but it wasn't until I was in my 30's (I'm almost 50 now) that I really listened to the lyrics and really took them to heart. The line: 'In the paper to-day, tales of war and of waste/ But you turn right over to the t.v. page' is especially poignant to me now.

One of my favorite songs of all time. I may have been one of the ones who requested it. It came out when I graduated high school and that summer I went through that huge transformation of losing contact with so many people I grew up with. It was a hard time & this song was comforting. Thanks to social media change hasn’t lasted forever. I agree with u about 80’s music. I so love the 80’s.

I saw Crowded House at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 7, 1988. They performed "Better Be Home Soon" and they presented for Best New Artist In A Video. Guns N' Roses won for "Welcome To The Jungle." They walked right by me when they were going to the stage. I was so happy.

I am a child of the 80s and I have to agree! SO much good music in ALL genres - pop, r&b, rock, country, soul - everything. And it was pre-Internet, which was also AMAZING. People actually talked to each other and weren't taking 10,000 pictures of themselves. Try "Luka" by Suzanne Vega from 1987.
