Neil Finn is a genius singer/songwriter - he and his brother Tim formed Split Enz before neil went off and formed Crowded House, with some guest appearances from his brother. You MUST Listen to Tim and Neil sing "Won't Give In", you will LOVE the lyrics and harmonies.

Neil said he wrote this in a afternoon. Some people had come over to his and his wife's house to hang out and he was just in one of those moods where he wanted to be alone...so he left them in one room and went into another by himself....and this song flowed out of nowhere. He's so fantastic.

Neil Finn is, in my opinion, the greatest lyricists ever in our modern age. I'm mainly a metal guy, but Crowded House songs transport me immediately to me and my Dad crooning away in the car going here and there. I saw their (1st) Farewell to the World concert at the Opera House and it was utterly amazing.
For those of you interested, it's on youtube - search for 'crowded house farewell to the world'. They played this song as the closer, and it absolutely brought the house down.

80s music truly was the best, I loved this song when it came out. I was just a kid but it really spoke to me even then. Today’s music has nothing on the 80s, when singers could really sing and play, and lyrics in many songs were so amazing.

I remember the 80s pretty well my friend. It was my childhood but it was a reality. Things were different, calmer and more fun. The world seemed so relaxed and people weren't so displeased with everything. We actually didn't survive by keeping our phones in our pockets, we wrote letters and had pen pals. We walked miles to go see friends and stayed out till the sun went completely down. Neighbors got along in most neighborhoods and we even had occasional neighborhood parties. I think about the 80s often. I'm blessed I was a part of it.

I still remember watching their farewell concert on tv on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. There were over 100,000 people there. It was a proud moment to be an Aussie. But when the drummer, Paul Hester, took his own life about 10 years later, it was a very sad day.

Yay for awesome Kiwi songwriter Neil Finn. He and his brother, Tim, wrote so many great songs as both Crowded House, and my favourite, Split Enz. So much great music from the Finn brothers
Crowded House: Into Temptation, Better Be Home Soon, World Were You Live, Four Seasons in One Day, Weather With You, Distant Sun, Something So Strong, It's Only Natural, Mean to Me
Split Enz: I Hope I Never, I Got You, History Never Repeats, I Walk Away, My Mistake, Shark Attack, I See Red, One Step Ahead, Six Months in a Leaky Boat, Message to My Girl, Poor Boy, Dirty Creature, Give It A Whirl.
No one ever reacts to Split Enz. I find that a tragedy.

I always loved this song but it wasn't until I was in my 30's (I'm almost 50 now) that I really listened to the lyrics and really took them to heart. The line: 'In the paper to-day, tales of war and of waste/ But you turn right over to the t.v. page' is especially poignant to me now.

When you said this is a master piece and the writer is a genius you were not wrong, this band is no one hit wonder having had a string of world wide hits in the late 1980s and 1990s. The singer and song writer is Neil Fin from New Zealand and the other 2 are from Australia. This song was theme song for a Stephen King movie.

A beautiful song, one of my all time favourites. Always loved that instrumental break, so concise and perfect. Crowded House were a great live band, and the inter- band banter and the wonderful rapport with their audience was always great fun. It was so sad when the original drummer, Paul Hester, committed suicide in 2005, he was always clowning about on stage, but it clearly masked a recurring depression. I wish he could have taken this song to his heart, and not let his demons win.

It's funny - I grew up in the 1970s/1980s and I talked about the *1960s* the way you talk about the 80s! I became obsessed with the music and culture of the 60s and wished I hadn't missed them.

  • @Wayner71

Well said. In the 1980's we had no idea that pop and rock music would soon start to drop in quality. Today it's barely music at all and it stimulates no deeper feelings or thoughts. TH-cam channels like yours are keeping great music alive and in a place where youngsters can access it. Personally, I don't think that rock is dead but that it will eventually evolve into something that kids can hook into again.
