"losing my religion" is an old southern term for getting mad or angry. You would say something like "Don't make me lose my religion!".

    • @lawrencegillies
      @lawrencegillies 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Also heard it as expression of awe (usually about a person) "she's enough to make me lose my religion"

The more modern term with younger crowds is, "I'm ready to risk it all," or, "They look at that person like they ready to risk it all."

The title "Losing My Religion" refers to lead singer Michael Stipe's grandmother's term for losing her cool and saying things that she would not have typically said because of her faith. Notice all the religious symbolism throughout the video, including Doubting Thomas from the Bible, and Icarus from Greek mythology. The song and it's video are masterpieces.

Kurt Cobain grew up loving REM , and Michael Stipe ( rem's vocalist ) also was a fan of nirvana. Stipe had sent Kurt a request to work on a project together, Kurt agreed to, but had began isolating himself in a house he had that was out of town-kind of out in the sticks. He was not taking calls and not responding to anyone for the most part, except Courtney . Just before the very questionable " suicide" took place, Stipe had sent Kurt a plane ticket to get Kurt out of that house and to stay with him and work on music together. He even sent his driver to the house,
who waited outside for 10 hours.
After Kurt died, the note from Michael Stipe asking him to come work with him was found taped to his wall.
I always liked REM, but after hearing this story, I loved them even more.

The song was written by singer Michael Stipe and the subject is unrequited love. How he tries to get the subject of his affection to notice him and how increasingly desperate he becomes. The subject is universal, how hopeless you feel going through it.

REM’s album, Out of Time, is one of those rare perfect ones where every song is brilliant and is worth your attention. Radio Song is an absolute gem.
You might also like to try a song called Kid Fears by the Indigo Girls, which is a beautiful song featuring REM’s lead singer, Michael Stipe, on backing vocals.

Rewatching this, I realized this is an edited version of the video. I didn't know there was one. During the "consider this" verse, a man is supposed to put his finger in the fallen angel's wound (symbolic of Thomas putting his finger through Jesus's wounds). I guess it made people uncomfortable. It was the version I had on VHS (which sadly got thrown away).

I always interpreted this song as a “love lost” or a song of a love unrequited. Either falling out of love or losing the interest/ affection of the one they admire. “...A distance in your eyes...” they can see that, the attention to them is waning... “...oh no, I’ve said too much, I haven’t said enough...” trying to bring up awkward conversations, trying to get your feelings off your chest, but then being too afraid to really air it all out... this song is so deep and can mean different things to different people, or even several things to the same person in different moods...
I love this song so much, I still listen to it regularly.
Now it’s time to check out some G-Mo Skee! I’m telling you there really aren’t any artist who are as creative as him at the moment...

I subscribed to your channel and witnessed the battles you were having with yourself. Felt for you at the time. I believe though that you have come out of that period a much stronger individual. As Steve Jobs once said 'you join up the dots later on'. It doesn't always make sense at the time but it makes sense once you get there. Your channel goes from strength to strength. You, my friend, are a special individual. I'm 60 years old and a big fan!!

I don’t do religion anymore. I didn’t say I stopped a spiritual mindset. I had to lay the yoke of what people told me that felt unnatural and incredibly biased. Who can live believing they are bad by nature ? Or punished throughout life ? That’s not LIFE or LIVING .
I’ve not regretted walking away from doctrine or dogma. I found I could breathe.
I just had to find my connection meant for me.
Whatever ones perception of God is as explained by man?
Falls short . Why is there sooo much division in religion and judgment? Humans have agendas and flaws and project agendas on others. There comes a day you have to read and understand for yourself.
This song applies to several things in life to include the music industry to ones job , life and sense of ones place in society and the world .
It’s one on one man and how we treat others after we learn we are allowed to think for ourselves.
I’m in a dark night of the soul too. It was people created not forces unseen .
Standing back up after a storm in your truth is most revealing.
We are allowed to celebrate too.
“ We all are just walking each other home “. Ram Dass

I saw REM, and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts open for the Police during the Synchronicity tour in front of 70,000 people at Shea Stadium in NYC. What an amazing night; Sting thanked the Beatles for letting them use their stadium!

We all come from somewhere, we are all going somewhere, it's the music in the middle that I think helps to keep us whole.

Most of the songs today are written without any deep set meaning like this song and the others I grew up with from the 1960's. The 1980's and 1990's had so many songs written with meaning. This is a perfect song with a lot of meaning and feelings.

This song has always reminded me of my relationship with my Dad. It's hard to listen to it now because he has passed and I was never able to talk to him about the things he did to me
