    I’m a South African by birth but spent my 20’s and 30’s in London UK. Whenever this song played in clubs or pubs, it made me so homesick! I’m living back in Africa now! Africa gets inside you. There is nothing like the love you have for Africa.

    "Africa" by Toto is the most popular, loved and most requested song even to this day!! I just saw Toto perform it on Oct. 10th in Atlanta on their "40 Trips Around the Sun" concert tour, which they have been doing this tour for over 2 years now and have toured for over 40 years, thus the title of their tour. Sadly, David Paich, who wrote this song is not well & the guys have been touring so long, they are just burnt out and haven't seen their families for 6 months of the year, they have decided to take a hiatus and stop touring; their last concert was in Philly, last night, October 19th. Hopefully they will get some much needed rest and come back again. I sure will miss them!

I can't wait to get into my car and listen all over again with my windows down, wind in my hair and feeling proud of the music of my generation! Thanks young man. Your emotional response is off the wall!

    • @onsesejoo2605
      @onsesejoo2605 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The keyboardist Steve Porcaro did compose the song "Human Nature". David Paich did arrangements on the album and the other members minus bassist David Hungate played on several tracks both individually and together. :) However the album was produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. Other composers were Jackson himself, James Ingram and Rod Temperton.

    The guy singing is also a piano player in the band. Check out the live 35th anniversary show. Quick history of this song. He had an infatuation with the Continent of Africa. He had read books and researched it, but had never been . He wrote the song from the heart , at the time the band was doubtful it would appeal to listeners, but he was persistant, and the rest is history. Love.

    If you didn't know already, the members of Toto are all studio musicians that played, wrote/arranged some of the biggest hits of the 70's and 80's. For instance, some of the guys in Toto are all over the "Thriller" album. As a matter of fact, the keyboard player wrote "Human Nature" on the "Thriller" album. Steve Lukather (Guitar) played all of the rhythm guitar on "Beat It"- Eddie Van Halen did the guitar solo.

    JB, A related story. When I bought a new 1982 Ford, it came with a "disc" with some songs to showcase the speaker system. This Toto song, Out of Africa, was on that disc. JB, I LOVED that song then, and still do at 80 yrs of age! :) I played that song, over and over and over - couldn't get enough of, as you say, "those notes." :) Your Grandma knows great music when she hears it - she and I both still love this song. Great web site JB - I'm tunin' in to hear what you say. You ARE "the music man" - I can see it in your reaction. I still "react" to this music 38 years later. Peace to you, my brother.

    I reccomend out of all the covers of this song the "Italian Artists" version with a string section and...Well these talented people obviously love this song. Now the history, the guy who wrote the lyrics went to a school with a teacher who had been a missionary in Africa. In his friendship with this traveler he came away with the impression of how lonely it is to be far from home and separate from the local culture while loving the land and the people, but knowing he could never be truly a part of it. Caught between worlds. And somehow the song captures that deep emotion even for people who have no idea what it is about.

      If it's good enough for Cyrus in the Warriors,then it's good enough for me.

    Man, I'm sure glad you liked this song. The drama and exotica of the lyrics will speak to any human being with a heart. The only thing I wish Toto would had done ... finish the song with a recording of actual African drummers embellishing the beat of the music -- then bring it to an abrupt halt for the ending.

    JB, I am the same age as these guys and you have to check out more videos on them. They are my favorite group. They are wonderful musicians and have played on thousands of other artists records. Toto is amazing! Please check out these songs by them: Hold The Line (there first hit), Rosanna, Pamela, I Won't Hold You Back, Till The End, Goin Home, Stop Loving You, 99, the list goes on and on. They just got done with there 40th Anniversary tour. Check out some live stuff too. The guitarist (Steve Lukather) has been in the band since the beginning. He also played the guitar on "Beat It" by Michael Jackson. True! Eddie Van Halen played the solo, but Steve played the rest of the guitar and the bass. Other members of the band are: The singer in this video is David Paich ( he plays the piano) Steve Porcaro (plays keyboards) but he is playing piano in this video. Mike Porcaro (plays bass) Jeff Porcaro plays drum. Both Mike and Jeff have passed away, Steve is the only brother left. The other singer is Bobby Kimball. The lastest singer however,is Joseph Williams (son of composer of Star Wars and Jaws theme John Williams) I hope you do more videos of Toto, your grandma has a good ear!! :)

    Check out this a cappella version of this song by Perpetuum Jazilee from Romania. They do the WHOLE thing with body sounds and voices. Just look up Perpetuum Jazilee - Africa. Very nice rendition! Note that it mentions the rain in Africa - they do rain, thunder and lightning (with lights) very cleverly!! It's around fifty men and women singing together. Percussion is done beat box style. Very cool! You will LOVE IT!!!
