    Yup your right on point pal, it's a huge XL Knife and it's not easy to conceal from the sheeple ,but like you I had to own a few ,but I carry the Large version when I carry a Espada and it's a Stonewashed G10 aus10a model , I have not had the pleasure of owning a CTX HXP steel blade Espada as of yet because when I purchased my first one they had already changed steel ,but I'm okay with that for now.

    Totes Malotes,
    Thank you very much for this instructional video!!! One of the best of all the instructional videos I have ever watched.
    I have one question though.
    Has the aluminum version enough traction (especially when your hands are sweaty) or have you modified its handle?
    Thank you very much in advance for taking the time to answer my question.

    • @totesmalotes
      @totesmalotes  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. Thank you, I’m glad the video was helpful.
      So to answer your question: my Espada XL isn’t modified and the only time I’ve had problems with the handle not having enough grip is when I’ve wave opened the knife out of my pocket. You have to grab only the scales of the knife in a sort of pinch grip in order to wave it out and in this situation the aluminum is too smooth for my liking. It’s not a problem if you stay conscious on what your doing but in a scenario in which my hands are wet I would consider trying to wave out the knife from my pocket dangerous (this is not a problem for the G10 version). Besides that, once the knife is open the different contours of the handle really locks in your hand at different places. I’ve swung this knife as fast as I can and I haven’t felt my hand slip. Hope this answers your questions.

      @totesmalotes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, I don’t remember exactly how much I paid for each but the CTS XHP versions where all around $300. I think they still go for around that price. $151 for the Aus 10a version isn’t that bad. My advice is to save a search on eBay so that you get notified whenever an Espada XL goes for sale that way there’s a chance you’ll find a good deal. But with the Aus 10a version, if you want it new, $151 might be as good as it gets.

    I got a kydex quick deploy sheath from @blackbearcustomkydex. I use it for my Espada large. I am thinking about getting on fir the XL. The downside? It is tek locked to your belt and is exposed. It does have a lock so as it’s not easily accessible by someone walking up on you and grabbing it. Also, I’d suggest not wearing it while driving but to take it out and stowing it until you get out of the vehicle. Cheers & Have A Knife Day 👍🏼

    Guess what? Today I found a large, heavy storage box in the basement I didn't remember having. I opened it and found a whole bunch of knives I forgot I had. There was a brand new Buck Hoodlum (I had another new one in the safe), as well as a couple of Cold Steel XL CTS-XHP folders, a Talwar plain edge and a Hold-Out plain edge. I found a new CS Peacemaker I and a new OSS AUS8A plus many others. And these were in addition to the many others I had in my safe and stashed away. I had three Espada dress knives, but in AUS8A. I don't remember buying any of them, but I found some other knives with XHP blades. I liked the XHP blades and the only one I actually use is a brown BROKEN SKULL, which I EDC. Oh, I also found an blue XHP Frenzy. Gorgeous knife!

I do landscaping in California and I wear a fixed blade when I’m doing that. When I do carry it I only use it for normal knife tasks I find that a large blade can do most things better (cutting rope, opening packages, etc.) I have taken it out in public, only once, but it is generally frowned upon. I understand there’s a stigma that comes with carrying a knife like this but when I see this knife I see a well made, well designed tool.

      I would go with one of my fixed blades for EDC over this monster all day long.
      Out of interest why are you going with the CTS-XHP as your go-to steel? What makes it so different from a decent German D2/CMP S35 vn or san mai III VG1.
      From what I can see the answer is not much.
      knifesteelnerds.com/2019/07/29/xhp-steel-history-and-properties/
      Vanadium is the only variable that looks significant. But is lower than in a decent German D2.
      I have challenged most EDC guys, to tell the truth ... if I switched out your go-to steel with something else ... D2 and I switched your blade out for S35 vn would you even notice? If you are all honest the answer is "no!"
      They are all very good high-end steels (the ones I have mentioned) VG10 is also AUS8a too ... etc ...
      I saw a bunch of videos from blade geeks when CPM put S45 vn on the market ... "I have been waiting for this steel for so long blah blah blah" ... so I asked one guy to tell me the difference between his new S45 vn super steel and the S35 vn that I have?
      Or even the S30 v that was the previous incarnation.
      Other than a cut/paste of the chemistry he had zero fucking clues (rolling eyes). CMP loves selling you new blades though!

    • @totesmalotes
      @totesmalotes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@raygun4468 I accidentally posted an unfinished response and deleted it. So, I like CTS XHP better because there is a moderate difference in edge retention compared to S35vn: th-cam.com/video/f2WU-vUpfXc/w-d-xo.html In everything else like toughness, rust resistance etc. I don’t think there’s a noticeable difference in day to day use between both steels. My experience with S30v is that it tends to get microchips easier than CTS XHP.
      Other than that, if you were to switch my knife with D2 or S35vn I wouldn’t tell the difference unless I counted my cuts. But I could tell once I sharpened it. CTS XHP does wear slower and feels harder when hand sharpening. The reality is though because of how often I maintain my edges there really wouldn’t be much to notice.
      But after saying all that CTS XHP does cut longer and I see it (for that reason) as a superior steel. So I do always prefer the best of two choices.
      As for constantly buying what’s new, I’m not really into that. My two favorite steels are CPM 3v and Vanax and I don’t really see that changing any time soon. Thanks for the questions.

    I carry this knife everyday. I have the G10 and polished Micarta version. Here in California we have very strict gun laws but the knife laws say I can carry a single edge folding knife concealed and there is NO LENGTH RESTRICTIONS. I also carry the Large 5 1/2'' version as well. It is much more practical to carry but it doesn't have the same presence as the XL when you deploy it. I've carried these knives for years and I've come to the conclusion that the perfect Espada would be a 6 1/2'' blade that was halfway between the Large and XL. It would be easier to carry but still have a reach advantage over almost every other knife out there.

I just carry it IWB appendix, no clip, with the "hook" at the back of the handle simply hanging off my pants. It's some sort of black magic, it just stays there put and doesn't budge no matter what I do, yet it's very available and swings open with flick of the wrist in a split second if need be.
