One of the things that amuses me the most in this film, that nobody ever acknowledges, is that The Bride isn’t the only person with a sword with her on the flight back from Japan. I like to think that airline has Coach/ Business/ and Revenge Class seating. 😂

It's clear that it's all-killer (no filler) secret airline, the kind of background world-building detail of an alternate world of assassins that would influence later movies like John Wick.

Yep. The seats have sword holders built in, so it seems like traveling with a sword is not uncommon in this version of Earth.

Hattori Hanzo not only helps the Bride, but breaks his life long vow, which is no small thing, to help her... A lot of western people don't understand why he would do that so easily. But it wasn't easily. Bill was a former student of Hanzo, and in the Asian culture, the teacher-student relationship is sacred... The fact that a former student of yours is using the skills you taught them, to do evil in the world, is a huge shame and massive responsibility to the teacher. In Asian culture, it was the teacher that failed the student, so that is why the student ended up like that... And only to kill his student will make it right.
Uma Thurman's character clearly understood this.

    • @pacmon5285
      @pacmon5285 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Did people really not understand this? Even without the understanding of the Asian cultural influence, it's quite obvious between the acting/dialog that he feels an immense responsibility (made more obvious by the breaking of his vow).

I love the lack of exposition. O-Ren Ishii is one of my favorite villains in movie history. You infer O-Ren and the Bride's friendship because she knows O-Ren's entire life story. O-Ren and The Bride saying the old Trix cereal motto in unison, obviously a inside joke, and O-Ren apologizing for mocking the Bride, a sign of respect.

    • @pkdude5334

They were clearly besties at some point. Both of them at times not accepted into the cultures within which they chose to inhabit and eventually rose to the top of. We can only assume that The Bride's backstory was equally as tragic. And their style of approach were similar: strength and honor. Although cottonmouth could be decidedly more deceptive. When we witness the face off between the black mamba and the sidewinder, the differences in interpretation of honor is more clear to see. Whereas the California Mountain Snake truly has none.

the fountains of blood when someone is killed with a sword harkens back to old samurai movies.
There was one old black and white samurai movie that kind of started it. There was a scene where a samurai is supposed to kill a guy with his sword, a little blood comes out, and the victim falls over dead. The prop guy didn't do the fake blood squib right though. When the actor "died", a huge fountain of blood erupted, like a ridiculous amount. The director left it in; probably because they didn't have the time and money to reset and do another take.
Anyways, it looked kind of cool, especially in black and white. It looked cool enough that other directors of other samurai movies started to do it. Eventually it became kind of its own trope, and you see it today in a lot of anime. Tarantino uses it here as a sort of homage to those older films. In fact, almost everything in Kill Bill (and a lot of his other movies) are call backs to old films.

That final fight on the roof in the snow is as close to perfection as anything I've ever seen in a film. You can truly feel how formidable O-Ren is as an opponent. It's almost like watching a live-action version of a triple-A anime fight scene.

I'm an older guy. Loved Tarantino's films when they came out. Always wondered why I loved them so, until I saw Bill Vol.1. Saw that Shaw Bros. (legendary studio producing Hong Kong "Kung Fu" films) logo in the opening sequence. "Oh! We grew up watching the same stuff on Saturday afternoons!!" There weren't many 'informercials' back then - TV stations would show films like that because the broadcast rights payments were cheap.
"Hanzo" is Sonny Chiba, classic-era Japanese martial arts star. "O-ren" is Lucy Liu, famous female martial arts film performer. "The Bride's" yellow track suit in the fight at O-ren's place is a tribute to Bruce Lee (In "Game of Death" he fought his real-life student NBA star Kareem Abdul Jabbar!) - it's iconic to those of us that love this stuff.
Anime is frequently quite bloody. The Japanese seem to understand that "..cartoons aren't just for kids..".
The little tune with the synth is from the '70s TV show "Ironside". IIRC, it was Raymond Burr's ("Perry Mason") last major role. Played an ex-Police Chief who'd been shot and was in a wheelchair. Called back to work at the PD because he was so brilliant.

As someone who isn’t really a Tarantino fan or fan of blood, or anime or blood or sword fighting, this is oddly enough one of my favorite films (add in v2 as well) of all time. I love the storyline, the transitions, the use od color, the action, the actors and how satisfying it is to see her get her revenge.

"I will say, this has definitely been my favorite Tarantino movie -- by far." I agree. This pair of films is the one work of Tarantino's I recommend to all but the most squeamish. It's like 300 (2008) in that way: it's worth looking past the violence and experiencing the pure style.

Such great cinema and having learned about the influences, like Lady Snowblood, makes this film even more awesome.

Back during the 70's "Splatter Films", they would reuse the same Actors and Characters from movie to movie to tie them together.
Such is the case for the Tarantino films. Michael Parks played Esteban and the Chief in this Movie, then he and his Son James reprised their roles as the Chief and Deputy in the Grind house's "Death Proof" and "Planet of Terror".
It's also rumored that Samuel L. Jackson's "Piano Player" was what happened to"Jules Winnefeld" after he quit being an assassin in "Pulp Fiction".

    - The Man with the Iron Fists
    - Hero
    - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
    - Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa
