Coby, the voice for Pizza the Hutt was Dom DeLuise and yes, Dot's voice is Joan Rivers. The actor in the suit for Dot is the mime Lorene Yarnell from Shields and Yarnell. One of George Lucas' stipulations for permission to parody his franchise was that the Han Solo character couldn't be costumed like he is in Star Wars hence the idea to make him look instead like Indiana Jones. And if you didn't ever figure it out, Mel Brooks played 2 roles in this film...he is President Skroob and Yogurt. Also, Michael Winslow from Police Academy is the radar officer that got jammed doing all those crazy sound effects he is known for. Lucas loved the script so much that he offered the services of ILM to do the visual effects which is why they are top notch for 1987. Some of the escape pod footage is actually unused film from A New Hope. After our heroes get rescued by the "jawas' thru walking up to the scary stage of Yogurt is a veiled reference to the Wizard of Oz. I'm sure you can get which Spaceballs character translates to which character in Oz. One other thing: the doll playing scene was a last minute suggestion by Mel to Rick that he totally improvised on the spot.
I also heard that the doll improv scene from Rick was taken in one shot, and they had to break afterwards because everyone was busted up from laughter. Moranis is a legend.
One minor gag at the beginning (the title scroll) was "Chapter Eleven," a reference to bankruptcy law. The Spaceballs had squandered their air, and were "bankrupt" of atmosphere.

Great reaction Coby like always i love Mel brooks movies. The scene of Dark Helmet playing with his dolls was a total ad-lib by Rick Moranis on the day. They just had the dolls sitting around from the merchandising scene, and he spotted them and suggested the idea to Mel Brooks. Ended up being one of the best scenes in the movie!
On the audio commentary Mel Brooks said that line is true, hence why people elect bastards like Trump and allow the Do Not Say Gay campaign. If good were smart then people like Trump wouldn't be allowed to become president.
When Lonestar says, "Eagle 5, going in for a landing," it is funny now because when Bill Pullman stars in Independence Day, his call sign is "Eagle 5". I wonder if Bill Pullman asked for that to happen?
One thing you didn't catch - when the group first met the Yogurt statue it was in reference to The Wizard of Oz - the over sized statue - the lion - the tinman - the scarecrow and Dorothy. And yes Yogurt was also played by Mel Brooks
What I really love about this movie: it not only makes fun of the originals, but is also a loving homage to Star Wars. The incredible attention to detail in the film sets, costumes and equipment alone, as well as the many allusions to the content, requires that the audience knows the original very well in order for the gags to work. At the same time, the movie takes the nonsense to the absolute extreme.
Yogurt is a parody Of Yoda And it’s also is played by Mel Brooks! He Was walking on his knees and put shoes on them to look like he was walking! MIND BLOWN!!!
Coby didn't think I could love you more! Great reactions! Anyone that can appreciate Mel is beloved to me! He really takes the piss outa everything with this. You have great folks that have made so many awesome comments here preceding. Mel gets better with each dram much like scotch! You will laugh at all his cheeky and red line encroaching movies! I've worked with a dozen guys in my life who were just like Yogurt and learned a ton of Schwartz wisdom from them each. The life imitating art dynamic is so fun in his movies! Thank You!
Rick Moranis improvised the "dolls" scene, and like many other times in the filming process, they had to redo the shot because the crew was cracking up; you can see George Wyner working to hold it together.
Mel Brooks not only played President Skroob (Which is technically Brooks spelled backwards), he was also Yogurt, he was on his knees when he played that part. The part close to the end where the little alien sang Hello My Baby, it was a reference to a classic Bugs Bunny cartoon called One Froggy Evening. You should see it if you want to understand that joke. The coloring book that Yogurt showed was actually a Transformers coloring book.
For those that didn't get the reference(s)- the Pizza the Hut "gang" were plays on famous 80s commercials/brands/pairings in the 80s. Max Headroom touted "Coca-Cola" as the "New Wave Taste". He was basically the first "V-Tuber" type celebrity. Pizza Hut was one of the all time biggest pizza chains of the era. Pizza Hut in the late 70s/Early 80s was bought up by Pepsi, to ensure that Coke's products couldn't be served at a Pizza Hut. Pepsi and Coke had some pretty fierce ad campaigns against each other in the 80s.
Mel....what a national treasure! Going back to his earliest movies, all brilliant! It's hard to believe, he was a WW2 hero! All his movies are pure genius, the producers is a riot! He cowrote blazing saddles with Richard Pryor and how he got Gene Hackman to take a bit part in, Young Frankenstein, I'll never know! Mel is Yogurt, in this, he's usually in all his movies somewhere! This movie has so many movies in it, even a bit of Dune! He was also hillarious in he had a reoccurring bit part as a guy I think named, Methuselah, in the TV show, Mad About You!
Gene Hackman found out about the role from his good friend and tennis partner Gene Wilder. He requested a part in the movie because he wanted to try comedy.
The "instant cassettes" part was Mel Brooks genius take on Abbott and Costello routines (especially "Who's on First"). It's my favorite part of the entire film.
A lot of people seem to miss the joke that Chapter 11 is a bankruptcy filing. It really reinforces the need for Spaceball 2: The Search For More Money.

39:15 "I Know That Guy Too,But I Don't Remember His Name" King Roland is played by Dick Van Patton He's also in the Mel Brooks parody "Robin Hood:Men In Tights"
I'm impressed by how many references you got from that era. It blew my mind that the Wizard of Oz references seemed to go right over your head. It's a classic. Gotta put it on your watch list.
I believe it was the commentary on this film where Mel Brooks spoke about his view on comedy. "I always love a cheap joke." Can't argue with the man, it works.
Dom DeLuise voiced Pizza The Hutt. That's Rick Lazzarini's chin inside the costume, the cheese that you see hit his chin actually was real melted cheese and it scalded him but he kept going.
The "We Ain't Found Shit" guy was Tim Russ who went on to Star Trek as the (fan favorite) Vulkan science officer Tuvok. He has also done numerous appearances in many other Sci Fi shows too.
Pizza The Hutt's henchman was a take-off reference to Max Headroom from the late night tv series Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into The Future, and was played by Matt Frewer. Max Headroom was also seen in a small series of Coke commercials at the time as well.
Neat fact the black guy on the pick in the desert had only 1 line. He is also thw actor who played Tuvok on the show Star Trek Voyager and he is still proud of that role today

When Lonestar says, "Eagle 5, going in for a landing," it is funny now because when Bill Pullman stars in Independence Day, his call sign is "Eagle 5". I wonder if Bill Pullman asked for that to happen?
I believe he was Eagle 1. But it bugged me because he should have been Air Force One.
@@matthewkreps3352I don't think it would be that call sign considering he was the only one onboard.
This has made my heart so happy, another generation enjoying SpaceBalls!!!!!! ❤❤💪💪
Thank You!
It's refreshing to see someone that knows so many of the actors!
Hilarious reference to the stormtroopers being terrible shots by having the gunner be cross-eyed lol.
The singing and dancing alien at the diner was imitating Michigan J. Frog from the Warner Brothers cartoons.
Mel Brooks, always breaks the 4th wall. Its a staple of his comedy.
You need to watch all the Mel Brooks movies. They blow the Wayans Brothers' satires out of the water.
The "instant cassettes" part was Mel Brooks genius take on Abbott and Costello routines (especially "Who's on First"). It's my favorite part of the entire film.
No one remembers Dot Matrix computer printers, so that joke never hits.
A lot of people seem to miss the joke that Chapter 11 is a bankruptcy filing. It really reinforces the need for Spaceball 2: The Search For More Money.
I went through college writing my papers using Word Perfect and a dot matrix printer.
I churned out my college papers on an Epson LX-series Dot Matrix printer via Wordstar for DOS.
They still sell those for printing invoices and receipts where I’m from.
I love how in the desert scene Dark Helmet uses the megaphone right next to Colonel Sandurz, but when calling out to the men combing the desert he just opts to drop the megaphone and yell at them 😂
"I bet she gives great helmet"
Yes! Jim Henson's the storyteller was his last proud achievement and so sad when he passed away, and it was placed off the air... but it was so special and shown the brighter, yet darker side of the man called Jim Henson.
Star Wars loves to insert hidden bases (Corellia - Hidden Rebel Base.
Pkihantri - Rebel base.
Talus - Rebel Forward Base Camp and Talus base.
Xyquine II - Xyquine base.)
Vespa is the "hidden bass"🤭
"Comb the desert." My favorite joke in all of comedy history.
now you need to see Wizard of Oz, there was 3 or 4 references in this movie
39:15
"I Know That Guy Too,But I Don't Remember His Name"
King Roland is played by Dick Van Patton
He's also in the Mel Brooks parody "Robin Hood:Men In Tights"
20:51 Exactly what we all need to survive on a desert planet. Hot air blown directly at our scalps.
I'm impressed by how many references you got from that era. It blew my mind that the Wizard of Oz references seemed to go right over your head. It's a classic. Gotta put it on your watch list.
Coby: "The helmet is so big.."
Me: *giggles*
I believe it was the commentary on this film where Mel Brooks spoke about his view on comedy. "I always love a cheap joke." Can't argue with the man, it works.
Dom DeLuise voiced Pizza The Hutt. That's Rick Lazzarini's chin inside the costume, the cheese that you see hit his chin actually was real melted cheese and it scalded him but he kept going.
so two italian-americans doing the pizza guy 😂 gold
The "We Ain't Found Shit" guy was Tim Russ who went on to Star Trek as the (fan favorite) Vulkan science officer Tuvok. He has also done numerous appearances in many other Sci Fi shows too.
Pizza the hutt was played by Dom Deluise ( he voiced pizza the hutt)
Pizza The Hutt's henchman was a take-off reference to Max Headroom from the late night tv series Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into The Future, and was played by Matt Frewer. Max Headroom was also seen in a small series of Coke commercials at the time as well.
Neat fact the black guy on the pick in the desert had only 1 line. He is also thw actor who played Tuvok on the show Star Trek Voyager and he is still proud of that role today
The Storyteller was amazing!!!!
"Well he's an Asshole, sir"
"I know that, what's his name?" ROTFLMAO
Mel Brooks ripping the literal jokes right out from Abbot and Costello.
I never caught that, but it makes sense.
Love your reaction. Your laughter is just infectious. 😄
Dark Helmet - 'Lone Starr, I am your Father's brother's nephews cousin's former roommate' 😄
...what's that make us?
Absolutely nothing
@@adamscott7354 _Absolutely nothing!_ which is exactly what you are about to be....
Actually, it is possible they are brothers. lol
@@libertyresearch-iu4fyIt’s actually yours, your brother’s, or a cousin’s former roommate. Your father’s brother is uncle, nephew could be you, a brother, or a 1st cousin, and then their cousin’s roommate is either a cousin’s roommate, yours, or your brother’s roommate.
Everybody misses the Wizard of Oz references.
What a world.
@@JRSiebzalso when they meet Yogurt.
@@josephvandiver6912 of course
No one ever get the raspberry joke either.
To this day, the scene with the black Spaceballs combing the dessert with an afro pick and saying "We ain't found shit!" makes me laugh every time. 🤣
Great start to the weekend thanks Coby!🫶

Fun Fact for you, Coby:
That little tune that the characters parodying the jawas are humming, is from "The Bridge On The River Kwai" which starred Sir Alec Guinness (Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original trilogy)
Mel Brooks is one of the very few ppl who have won an Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and a Grammy.
Independence Day has a reference to Space Balls.
The President's call sign when he goes into combat at the end of the movie is Eagle-5.
Great reaction Coby. Now that you've been introduced to Mel Brooks, you should watch his masterpieces, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
I never thought in 10,000 years Coby would have this much fun with Spaceballs, honest to God, it was fun to watch but it is funny to see her frames of reference, melrose place, John Candy, Joan Rivers, she must be Gen X for sure, she looks a lot younger
29:04 "Who _is_ that?" That's ALSO Mel Brooks. 🙂
I know about "The Storyteller". My favorite episode was "The True Bride" featuring the Thought Lion
The actor in the Pizza the Hutt costume is comedian Dom Deluise .
The guy making the noises with Helmet and Sanders is Comedian Michael Winslow, who is best known for playing Officer Jones in the Police Academy Movies (Another set of movies you should check out).
Yogurt is played by Mel Brooks playing both Yogurt and President Skroob.
Good ol’ Dom. He was truly a special ingredient.
His voice. He's not in outfit
the doll bit was improvised by Mel and Rick. Mel thought it was so funny he kept it in.
Yes! I always have my coffee when I watch Popcorn Roulette, you know that!
Colonel Sandurz - Of course I do, sir!
EVERYONE knows that!
( _ranks cover crotches_ )
*OF COURSE WE DO SIR!*
☕🎥😜
I'm pretty sure that her's is always "Irished", if you know what I mean
@@billthomas478 ☕🥃🍀
glad that someone recognized Daphne Zuniga, she is so beautiful
Great spoof. Bravo Coby for recognizing all the references and know the actress is from Melrose Place and John Hurt Rip from The Storyteller. Another great Mel Brooks spoof you should see is High Anxiety which o a spoof on classic Hitchcock movies but you should some of them before especially Vertigo, The Birds and Psycho. Another great spoof you should see is Top Secret which is a ww2 spy spoof movie and you don't need to see anything before. Also Family Guy did a great three part episode Star Wars spoof you should see.

Never thought I'd hear a Storyteller reference in any reaction.
The helmets so big😂😂😂 gigity gigity
the most obscure reference to Warren Miller, for those who don't know who Warren Miller is, he is a director/producer of downhill skiing movies from the 80's and 90's.
The actor who plays Colonial Sandurz, his son plays Howard Wolowitz in the big bang theory.
@@josephedwards8604 not Colonel Sandurz. He plays the plastic surgeon in the scene where they get the combination to the air shield. Sandy Helberg is his name and his son is Simon Helberg (who, of course, plays Howard Wolowitz in The Big Bang Theory as you mentioned).
YES!!!… loved the “Storyteller”!!… My favorite was the one with all the little Devil Demons.🤗
The Soldier and Death
Now that you have seen one Mel Brooks film, you absolutely must check out the silliness of "History of the World, Part I". Of course, no Mel Brooks journey is complete until you have seen "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles".
“Robin Hood Men in Tights” also a Mel Brooks movie ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS you should do that one too
A dumb fun movie. I think Mel Brooks was at his best when he worked with Gene Wider, The films The Producers, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are classics.
Also the underrated Mel Brooks comedies...The Producers (2005 - with Matthew Broderick & Nathan Lane), The Twelve Chairs, High Anxiety, Silent Movie, History Of The World Part 1, To Be Or Not To Be!, Life Stinks, Robin Hoods: Men In Tights and Dracula Dead & Loving It.
Movie that gets no air time by Mel, "To Be or Not To Be" pretty funny, great reaction.
It's hilarious 😂
And Mel's real life wife, Anne Bancroft, is in the movie (and plays Mel's wife too).
