  • On May 28th, 2022, The Reading & Northern ran the first Iron Horse Rambles in 58 plus years. After witnessing a Caboose Hop & 2 Coal Trains with 2102, the big day came as 2102 pulled a sold out 19 car train from Reading to Jim Thorpe. The 2102 went thru many weather patterns from Rain to Sunlight. It brought many railfans to witness a 21st Century Iron Horse Rambles. Now watch as 2102 pulls the Mighty Iron Horse Rambles. Enjoy!

    I'm honestly amazed no railfans have been quoting Jim Boyd regarding when he was documenting 2102 back in 1985 and 1991

      Boyd always said the T1s were the loudest 4-8-4s. Not his favorite 4-8-4 but he liked them. His favorite was the Burlington 4-8-4s. He also didn't like Reading headlights. Well I got news all my favorite locos have high PRR, off center Reading, and down low C&O headlights, so Jim & I always disagreed on that point. Jim was partially behind 2101s centered headlight the rest of the NKP look was Ross Rowland. Ross was missing 759 at the time. Jim documented 2101s masquerade alot too. So did RR Magazines Freeman. Id say RR magazines were better they also included cheesecake shots of steam. RIP Jim you were great to talk too.

      @@steamgent4592 I didn't know Jim wasn't around anymore. One of the shots from his Schuylkill Shifter video shows Andy Muller at the throttle. Andy's around to run it again. My wife and I are around to ride behind it again for the fist time since the mid 80s. Thankful for that.

    Every trip through September is sold out. Three in October may be as well, at least 1st class. Andy knows what he's doing!

    Great video! Thanks for sharing. I was trackside for the April coal train test and in Sept. and Oct. This is one I missed. One question - what kind of tripod mount do you use to minimize ground vibrations? Some of your video is pretty close to the tracks and shows minimal shake. I have a pretty heavy tripod but the camcorder is small, and I get noticeable vibration when 20-50 feet away. (I had no problem with a VHS camcorder in the 19909's when taping the same T1... :-)

    Wow! 19 cars and no diesel! Had some wheel slip starting at 12:19, was that Hometown hill?

      Wet rails were a bit of a problem, but not much. It slipped a little coming into Jim Thorpe. The engineer had to quick grab the throttle.

    Any explanation for the 2 different whistles being used? Are they hooked up at the same time, or do they just swap whistles?

    • @S0M3GUY778
      @S0M3GUY778 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not too sure as to the function of both whistles, but they're hooked up at the same time and use two different cables to activate them.

      The hooter is 2102s original freight whistle. To my understanding the T-1s wore both a freight whistle and the reading 6 chime for when used in passenger service cause its more pleasing to the ear
