Autumn Leaf Excursions 2016
Every October, when the Fall Foliage is at its peak colors, the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad fires up the beautiful ex-Gulf, Mobile & Northern #425 for a round of excursions on their classic route between Port Clinton, PA, and Jim Thorpe, PA. The train has proven to be a big success for both the railroad and those wishing for a scenic train ride into "The Switzerland of Pennsylvania", and the 425 draws locals and photographers from across the country (and sometimes even the world) to the track-sides to watch what is arguably one of the loudest steam locomotives in the country. For the 2016 season, three of the excursions were operated with a 14 car excursion consist and a diesel helper, with the exception of the final trip, for the first time with an 8 car consist pulled solely by the 425. The sounds of the exhaust beats off the mountainsides and the whistles of Southern Railway and Central Railroad of New Jersey echoing through the valley are heard far and wide.
