Foamer gets mad and tries to be bossy over the NKP 765

  • This video was taken at approx.3:40pm on Sunday May 26, 2013 at the N.E Stone Quarry, 5 miles south of Tyrone Pa off of rt 453. Here is a perfect example of a Foamer taking Trains just a little too serious. Just about any spot you go to see the NKP 765 there is going to be lots of spectators, some who like trains more than others. As the NKP approachers you'll hear a foamer yell "Hey, back up", like he's the boss of the Stone Quarry or something.lol. It would have been one thing to say it nicer or at least just ask. I guess he didn't want anyone in his "shot" but he thought it was Ok to yell in everyone else's. Not that I cared cause I'm not trying to win an Oscar or anything, I kinda felt bad for the couple. We were talking for about 20 mins before the NKP arrived, they were really kind. You can see the reaction of the couple on the right of the screen. After the video I couldn't help myself from mocking the foamer a little bit in defense of the couple I'd just met, plenty loud enough for him to hear. Not to mention he was trespassing practically standing on the tracks. For those of you thinking I am trespassing at the Quarry, I've asked permission to be there from the security guys and it's Ok. All you foamers can thumbs down this video. hahahaha

We had a guy ask us (we were there 20 minutes before this guy was) if we would move over a bit. I was annoyed, but said sure, so we moved over a bit as he was clearly wanting to video. He then moves and sets up right where we had been standing. So, when the train got close, I just had a really loud conversation with my wife. LoL

As a photographer of various things, not just trains, I will admit I really hate people who get in my shot. Usually though I'm somewhere there are not many, if any at all, people. I don't like to have people in any picture I take and I make sure I choose a spot where I know for a fact no one is gonna be in the view I'm trying to get. BUT even if someone were to do it, you get more cooperation when you politely ask if they could move rather than being yelled at by someone who thinks they're god. But I don't see that anyone was in his shot, plus if someone does happen to get into a shot, guess what.....most decent photo editors you can pay for provide the option to remove things you don't want in your picture, like people. Honestly if someone yelled at me to move I'd just stay there.....if you wanna be an a$$ I'll be an a$$ right back to you, but I'm usually very respectful of other photographers....we all want a good shot but if you feel you need to yell at people to get it, then just put the camera down and find something else to occupy yourself.

It is a nickname for a railfan. Particularly an overenthusiastic fanatical one. It is often used in a derogatory sense. There seems to be a consensus that it is derived from "foaming at the mouth", although that is hard to definitively confirm.

That’s about the time I take two steps forward. If you’re that good a taking pics, you wouldn’t be standing in a wide open area that’s easily accessible to everyone. Do a little research, put some actual effort into it and don’t go for a shot that an elderly couple can get on their flip phones.

here are 3 answers to your question
      1. They don't run steam locomotives anymore.
      2. it is a special run
      3. a lot of people like steam locomotives and always take the opportunity to record or get photographs of a steam locomotive on a special run.
so here you are your answers to "I don't understand why there are so many people watching this train".

Typical triggered foamers when they see a classic steam engine with diesel locomotives behind it

I had a run in with a foamer or toxic train fan. While at work (My work has a contract with CSX.) I was walking down a set of tracks that connect two yards and a factory. The factory was extending their yard and I had to measure where the factories, States and CSX's properties meet. There was a guy with his camera, and he started yelling calling me an effing idiot for walking on the tracks me being the smart ass I am, and I knew no trains were going to run on that track for the next 6 months I layed down on them and oh boy did he about spaz out and have a heart attack. I can handle all the name calling and as soon as he threw a rock at me, he crossed the line. I told him if he ever throws a rock at me again that i was going to knock his teeth down his throat. He walked around the building and called the police. Turns out he and another guy had been tossed out of another train yard for trying to tell other people what to do.

@aaronkindoll8242 Sorry you had to deal with that. If I worked for the railroad, if a foamer throws rocks at me, I would be right on the phone with the railroad police. Foamers like that give us railfans a bad look.

Back in 1995, A 13 maybe 14 year old geek with glasses and an engineers cap made me want to punch him in the face. It was at the end of a locomotive tour. Me and a friend were talking while standing on the front platform of a GP40. Nerd told us to “get off so people can exit!” There are two ways off the loco at the front, and literally 3 feet of room behind us. He was just bossing people around so he could pretend to be a railroad employee. The Jeremy Dewitte of railroading.

To be honest, if someone tells you to get out of their shot, get out of their shot. Getting your shot blocked sucks. But hear me out. Every railfan should do their best to not block other peoples shots. I always make sure I am not blocking anyone else’s shot. But for the love of god do not whisper a single word while someone is recording. It can ruin everything.

I had to vent. I rode Milwaukee Road 261’s return to steam trip. At one point, we all disembarked and lined up for a photo runby. Everyone is told to pick a spot and stand next to each other- that way, no one would be in anyone else’s shot. 261 backed up about a mile and came charging past us. Just as it got to the perfect position, the moron next to me has to lean out three whole feet to get just a tiny bit closer- right in front of me. I couldn’t even yell because some were shooting video and I didn’t want to ruin it for them. Afterwards, I told the jerk off, but others around me didn’t seem to think he did anything wrong- smh and fml.

don't 'tell' someone to move.......that's akin to a demand. If you ask you're more likely to be successful. would you rather be asked or told? I know I don't want to be 'told' as it is just downright rude. There's a HUGE difference. And while I don't know about video editing, as a photographer myself I do know that anyone who is editing their photographs with a decent editing tool (photoshop for instance) have the ability to remove things from pictures that they don't want in the shot. I have done it so I know for a fact it can be done, within reason of course. I do my part to stay out of others pictures, but yeah its frustrating when there are people who don't care do it but that is why I tend to just hit the button and have numerous pictures of what I'm shooting at the time. I figure I'm guaranteed to get something good out of one of them.

Foamer is a railfan. What makes them a foamer is imagine a rabid dog foaming at the mouth. Thats why they are called foamers. From a railroad perspective, we typically encounter them more because they just don't do their hobby from afar and let us do our jobs. They typically get a lot close to us and then get mad we don't know what type of horn our engine has (we don't care). Where a railfan ( a normal human being who just likes trains) will typically stay away from the tracks, not try to approach us and stays safe, the foamer does exactly the opposite.

Nick T. And diesels can also be used as backup power just in case steam engines would ever run into problems on the mainline so they won't disrupt freight traffic.

765 and 611 ran excursions without diesel as well. The 765 excursion from near Bethlehem to Pittston had no diesel. I was on this and the Pittston 765 excursion and 611 from Manassas, VA. Those excursions may never be repeated again because NS no longer wants to host steam excursions. The Bethlehem-Lehighton and Manassas-Front Royal routes are normally freight only, you can't normally ride them unless you're an NS engineer.
