- Generally speaking when a karateka (karate practitioner) goes up against a muay thai fighter the karateka is usually going to be in for a long night. Though karate can definitely be effective, muay thai is just usually going to have a stylistic advantage.
In this old school special rules kickboxing bout we see a very high level karate practitioner and legendary kickboxer Andy Hug take on muay thai champion Changphuak Kiatsongrit. These special rules appear to be more karate centric as punches to the head appear to disallowed. - กีฬา

Apparently many do not know the rules of full contact karate, you can't
punch the face but you can kick the face and punch/kick the body. Muay
Thai fighters do not kick high usually anyway. Andy did no defend punches to the face because he knows they are not allowed.
I believe this is one of those full contact karate competitions.. The MT guy has to fight under the rules

@@petraspetraitis7001 a kick os alot stronger than a punch. Andy is trying to enforce Kyokushin rules wich allow kicks to the head and body but not punches. I'm not sure he would fair well if the rules were omitted for the Thai fighters head strikes
Face punching is more damaging to the bare knuckle puncher than the face. Foot is a different matter, which makes these rules absolutely odd.

The rule was put in place for no reason other than the fact that Karate doesn't train strikes to the head with anything but kicks, while muay thai trains strikes to the head with punches, elbows, knees as well as kicks.

I don't know about that. I think I know what you mean but I think it's more about the fact that muay thai is more in developing countries and it attracts hardier people. Karate people appreciate longevity and health a bit more but in the older days they would bang their hands into arthritis as well.

Depends on how the person practicing is. I've seen some Muay Thai Boxers, get put to sleep, by some very good Full Contact Karate guys. Also here, the rules were no face contact with punches. This was early 90s, so it didn't benefit the Thai Boxer. But today in other countries, they can go bare fist and elbows to the face and head, no matter what style you train.

So you expect the muay thai fighter lacking boxing footwork, striking techniques, head movement to counter out of nowhere? (Muay thai lacks these elements)
The high guard of muay thai makes the solar plexus and liver exposed to a 1-2 mawashi geri combo which is typical of a karate fighter. Not mentioning the fact that the muay thai fighter nullifed his vision due to the high guard and lost balance due to the knee checks.
Muay thai is just a sluggish yet hard yet so vunerable martial art.

So you're telling me traditional karate which has judo throws, arm locks, lightning fast strikes, a wide array of takedowns and ground and pound, conditioning better than muay thai, and cement breaking power is supposed to lose to a martial art based on an ancient fighting technique which is basically a way worse form of boxing with cardboard kicks is supposed to lose to a karate fighter in real life? Are you serious? You guys even train with gloves whilst karate fighters literally do not hence the ban of head strikes with the hand in some competitive settings.
Just because you see one karate style in particular which has no conditioning, nor head punches as custom and even controlled strikes lose to a thai boxer doesn't mean it's fair in the slightest sense.

To the people complaining about the rule set, this muay thai fighter agreed to the rules. If he didn't want to go by them, he didn't have to fight. Secondly, the karate guy is Andy Hug, a K1 kickboxing champion. He wasn't "afraid" of getting hit in the face, he did it all the time. It was just against the rules in this match. Don't like the rules, then don't agree to them.

This is kyokusinkai karate rules..andy hugh is legendary in k1 and these karate man are very strong full contact karate..they were tasting more each other because fighting with rules stays a game..to bad andy was 46 he died..i have seen him here in alkmaar on video 70s! They kick ass in mine opinion full contact no gloves no head strike only with feet ..very hard and kicking on head stands for indigniti cheers!
still, it takes not a lot of experience to tell that most of the Karate strikes, even when they landed, were ineffective: the Muay Thai fighter could have taken a few dozens more of those "kicks" and "punches" . The opposite is true for the karateka, who was hit just to his lower part of the body a few times and was showing signs of suffered damage. Muay Thai is difficult to beat because of the brutal conditioning and power its fighters bring on the ring.

Both of them fought very well for these rule sets, and they are both very limited. Didn't see any elbows or high knees from muy tai, didnt see joint breaks, eye or throat strikes from karate. There are so many things both martial arts offer but this is a SPORT competition. Please remember this while watching.

If the karateka is Andy Hug, in a full contact match where all strikes are allowed, Andy would have won anyway. He was actually a more efficient "head" striker using his hands, than most thai fighters.

Originally the K-1 was a tournament that was created by the flow of full contact karate Seidokaikan which Ishii founded. The original idea of K-1/kickboxing was built on full contact Karate which later became to known as the mixture of Muay Thai and karate.

This is so annoying to the muay thai guy. Years and years they train punching to the point that body itself reacts to a specific situation without thinking. But in this fight he needed to suppress his natural reaction. It feels so frustrating. It's like someone has tied his hands.
Edit : - I came to know that in this fight they purposely put a karate guy double the weight of the muay thai guy. This was happening for a long time during that era. They use to call muay thai fighters in Japan to fight with heavy weights with limited rules. This started because in 1963 and 1984, there was a match up between kyokushin and muay thai where muay thai guy beat the karate guy in the lumpini stadium and also in some other stadium in Tokyo. You can find those two videos on youtube.
Yeah he took those punches to the face and barely flinched. Didn't even retaliate.. Just followed the rules. That guy was one of the toughest human beings ever to walk the earth. RIP Andy hug.

The reason for the punches is that bare knuckle punches are dangerous for the person punching and the person being punched. The likelihood that a head kick hits is much much lower than a punch to the face

Apparently many do not know the rules of full contact karate, you can't punch the face but you can kick the face and punch/kick the body. Muay Thai fighters do not kick high usually anyway. Andy did no defend punches to the face because he knows they are not allowed.

I simply pointed out that this fighter won under muay thai rules making your claim stupid. Keep in mind karate fighters in this time also participated in full contact fighting which included being punch in the face, further making your claim stupid... I don't know about you, but if I agree to certain rules, I expect both sides to follow suit. Even then, I didn't see any bitching from this karate fighter... He just needed to take a breather after getting clocked bare knuckled in the face. Fights like this happened mutiple times during this Era, there were also thai fighters needing to take a breather after getting punched in the face with those rules and bare knuckles. This "bitching" you're talking about during the fight happened on both sides. Like I said, educate yourself.
