      @@samuelmcgovern The shaolin temple has changed drastically in the last decade. The are far more open to the public than they were in the past. Things aren't quite as secret and forbidden as they used to be.

    Reminds me of the monk who took a vow of silence, only allowing him to say 2 words every 10 years. After 10 years he told the head monk, "Food Cold". Ten years later he said, "Bed Hard". 10 years later he said "I Quit". "Well, it's no surprise", the head monk responded, "you've been complaining since the day you got here."

      Not to take anything away from the tremendous accomplishments of the monks but having discipline, like waking up early or exercising consistently is a much, much easier (or let's say: more probable) when you are in such an environment.
      You would follow your diet, if everybody around you did as well and if not following it would mean paying an immense cost (like having to leave your family).

    The translators took VERY large liberties when they translated the things that the monks said, but I guess it's expected for a documentaries like these.
    For example, what the senior monk says at 3:17 is "一定要把心静下来做这个动作。 专注于当下。". Translated relatively literally, it just means "[You] must calm yourself to perform this movement. Focus on the moment". He does NOT explicitly say that his junior's mind is restless or anything that dramatic.
    The senior delivered his advice concisely, but not nearly as profoundly as the translators made him sound.
    Either way, this was fun to watch, since I used to do Kung Fu as a kid.

      To these monks this is a test of spiritual growth, strength and will.
      To mock these people would be foolish. This man has more will and emotional strength than about 99.9% of the people on this earth. It’s fascinating to see people only at peace with themselves and fellow people around them compared to our industrial world standards.

      He has dedicated his life to enlightenment and education. 99% of people will laugh because they will never achieve such pride in their life. The only place I've seen this outside of the monks is in the upper ranks of the US military. It is unexplainable peace.

      I have been doing meditation and yoga for about 11 years it changed my life. I started doing Tai Chi with the elder folks at the parks for about 3 years. Everyone is at retirement age I am the only young person in my twenties who goes to it. Keeps you calm and focused and in the moment. Meditation has greatly improved my sense of self and well being something as simple as taking a breath of air sounds silly but in reality it really works.

    Ranton (a former shaolin dude) has a video on this. The guy was already a Shaolin warrior monk for years and this test was only for the camera. Also, Ranton had said that never in his time did he hear of a formal test to progress. I recommend watching his videos for an actual look into the real shaolin temple.
