Probably one of the top 10 greatest rock songs of all time? Still holds up in 2024?
Definitely, I remember when they opened for my favorite band Kiss in 78 and early 79!!!
Robin Zander is one of the Best Rock n Roll vocalist of all time. He is so overlooked by people. This guy can sing.
who misses Bun E Carlos besides me? Great drummer and character in the Cheap Trick band.
Nobody plays like him. He rushes and propels the rhythm and that is awesome.
Happy birthday to my oldest son. You probably won't see this comment, but this was the lullaby I'd sing for you and your brother. I didn't know kid's lullabies, so you both fell asleep to daddy singing classic rock. I love you my sons, counting the days till I see you again.
Thats okay..I used to sing "Rock you like a Hurricane" to my kids after I picked them up from daycare ha ha!
You made me tear up :D
I got a 5 month old and googled this cause I kept having this song pop in my head.
I guess I know now what's waiting for me down the line.
This album was just added to National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress
Holy smokes! It's a special album but I didn't think it would achieve such feat. Way to go Cheap Trick!
Definitely one of the very best American bands ever.
Lessons from life.....never fall in love with someone who doesn't love this song. It's never going to work.
That's good advice worth remembering. I love this song. (Just saying). ✌️
There was a commercial back in the 90s where one girl was telling another girl about the perfect guy she just met. And she proceeds to list off his qualities, like "he's nice to his mother." And the final one was "and he knows all the words to the greatest song ever recorded." and the commercial fades off playing "I want you to want me."
Singer's alright, bass player's alright, drummer's alright, guitarist just seems a little weird :D
Love cheap trick
dude plays alittle guitar though. Can't he? He pretty much makes their sound.
The drummer looks like an accountant who plays drums when he isn't doing my taxes.
Singer’s exceptional. Also great job harmonizing on the chorus by the band.
Rick was on some serious head tripping shaaat when he was on stage. However, the guitar playing was phenom level
One of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. Anthem of a generation.
I didn’t get them until “Next Position Please” who else misses Bun E. Carlos?
Won this album on a radio station. Was 14 and rode bus to station in baltimore to get it. Played it till the groves were gone
It was 1978, I was 14, Me and my buddy Matthew Breanue were camping in my tent in my backyard in Ferndale, Mi. I was drinking a beer I stole from my parents fridge, maybe two.... both for me.... Matt was only 12.... and we listened to this entire concert..... seems like yesterday.......Wow......
Where are your parents now? Lost own mom in 2016, and dad just this past February & it’s still raw.
This song makes me so nostalgic I could cry.
Me too. Seems like yesterday it came out. Was an awesome time in my life.
I think I was around 10 when this came out. Great memories of a simpler time.
1978 when Heaven Tonight and Budokan came out I was junior year high school the dream police in 1979. I saw them in concert in 1982 at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA they rocked it was awesome but they were so fucking loud my ears were ringing for days. One of the loudest concerts I have ever been to.
Rick Nielsen's presence and theatricals are simply amazing. Throwing picks and making faces jumping around and running back for his back up vocals.
He created an attractive, harmless but crazy character. What a band, this is what rock sounds like.
I find it hard to watch just because of him. I realize he was having fun, but he seems like a jack*ss.
I remember back in the 70's when I first heard Cheap Trick and thought to myself how weirdly different they sounded but here we are in 2024 and they still rock.
Kiss alive ? Nope Frampton ? Nope
Cheap Trick live at Budokan was the first live album I ever owned as a kid ....changed my life .
I'm in the Kiss Alive group, but this album was life changing indeed.
Funny enough KISS took Cheap Trick out on tour hence Cheap Trick’s tribute lyric in the third verse “when I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch, rolling numbers rock and rolling got my KISS records out”
Same here bought it at a record store on sale. saw it and said this is mine.
This fo sure one of the most underrated band ever I'm so happy that they won the RNR hall of fame
They can Rock great. Saw them in San Jose ,they opened for Aerosmith. But they rocked out great. Hope they are still rockn out there!!! Keep it alive!!!!
Im 57.proud to grow up in the best generation of Rock music... From 60s thru Mtv 80"s!!
Zander never fails to impress. He is a freak of nature with that voice of his, STILL hitting all the notes today. Simply amazing. UPDATE: Saw Trick again in July, i was anxious thinking no way could Robin sound as good last time I saw them, WRONG! He killed it, I was just floored. I took my 16 year old daughter and she was like "Wow! that guy has an amazing voice!"
The voice was great, but he body seems like it is just going through the motions and can't wait to go to sleep.
I've listened to this version probably close to 100 times, but I've never seen it and I wish that he were feeling is even a third as much as Rick.
@@chancemiller9340 He's almost 70 man, and he's still doing it. I've seen them around 20 times over the last 30 years and Robin has never been much of a mover anyway, he just face melts with that voice
@@chancemiller9340 you're right he doesn't seem to be as animated and he also doesn't talk to the crowd much at all every time I see them in concert. My Singer and I were talking about it. We couldn't figure out if he's just conserving his voice? Maybe he isn't as outgoing as the lead guitar player? They are so unique.. kick ass rock band!! They are a little different and I think that's why so many people love them
no auto-tuning just pure gold old talent
Well...it was 'enhanced" in the studio..all live albums do that..KISS ALIVE! is a studio album..only think "live" is the crowd noise on a loop and Peter's drums.
Can anybody deny that Bun was an absolute badass on drums!
I saw Cheap Trick at Selina's in Coogee Bay, some fool threw something at Bun, he jumped of his kit and was going to kill him. Security saved him (or not).
Hands down the best drummer who looked like a 70s private detective.
A timeless classic; it's a special song for me. 1993 was the worst year of my life: in the space of 3 weeks I lost my mother to cancer and my long-term girlfriend dumped me. I think this song was re-released in the summer of that year, it was always on the radio in Boise, ID, where I was living at the time. It helped me through SO many dark, dark days...May God bless you, Cheap Trick, you'll never know how much good your music does for so many people.
Sorry to hear about your mother.
As for your girlfriend, don't lose sleep over that . Go find another!
@@cristianhcm1914 Thanks for your nice comment, it WAS a tough year, but things have long been better. The best of luck to you too, my friend...
Better than the studio version
My first rock concert experience was cheap trick at the Budokan!
All things must pass, but good old those years ago! 🙌🙌🙌🎸🍾💪🥁🥁😃👊
My lifelong memory of Cheap Trick was at the Tx jam around 1980. They had the entire Cotton Bowl chanting ''WE'RE ALL ALRIGHT!'' near the end of this song . They stopped playing their instruments except for Bunnie. It went on and on , the crowd didnt want to stop!! 100,ooo people chanting. A truly magical moment.
I was there too. I've seen Cheap Trick probably about 5x's never disappoint. They Rock and I thank them for their wonderful kick ass music along w/memories toboot.
Wish I could live my entire life aged 29 and stayed in 1978 forever!
Live at Budakon has to be one of the 10 best live albums of all time.
Wtf could the other 9 possibly BE? Seriously. Nobody is better live than these guys, js. *Nobody.* Not even the lofty London Philharmonic & probly not Beethoven.
These guys and Rush who opened up for Kiss was an amazing experience!!! They pushed Kiss the original lineup to be better even!!! I am a die hard Peter Criss and Ace fan, and they said they used to party with these guys afterwards and were amazing guys!!!
Favorite lyric at 3:51
"Bun's alright, Tommy's alright, Robin's alright, Rick's alright!"
My first concert 1978 Veterans Memorial colosseum Phoenix State Fair. I was 14 😀
Drummer knows what he's doing.
He fits perfectly well in this great song, this great performance and in the Cheap Trick' s peak
Ironic, but if it weren't for these concerts they might not have been so big here in the states, thank you Japan.
One of the best opening Rock riffs ever , - simple, 100% effective
“Surrender, surrender, but don’t give yourself away” ... this line seems to fit mysteriously well in Japanese postwar protest culture
From Rochford, Ill 1973 and still touring more than 50 years later; currently in Australia 2024.
I cannot with how great this band. There is no weak link. Every member purr class in their respective roles. The songs. The instrumentation. The presentation. They sound as fresh today as they did in the 70s. Absolutely no one is like Cheap Trick.
親が洋楽好きでNHKでこれが放送されたのを観た記憶がある。懐かしい。
Weird, I got here from a re-run of "American Pickers". Frank and Mike bought some gear from Rick Nielsen that he had in a storage unit. It was souvenir shirts and some clothes he wore on stage that Rick had in a storage locker for decades. I was in HS during the 70's but wasn't into Cheap Trick, though I had plenty of friends that were. After catching these performances on TH-cam, I can see what everyone was talking about. They're a great band and the music would have been right up my alley in HS. The availability of "Budokan Live" is what makes TH-cam so great.
When I think of Cheap Trick Robin Zander mostly just standing there singing, Rick Nielson jumping all over the place, and Bun E. Carlos on the drums with a cigarette in his mouth. Love these guys!
Zander intentionally played it low key even stepping back to give the spotlight to his mates banging away.
Don't forget about the bass player Tom Peterson. Great guitarist and created the prototype for a 12 string bass.
Who else is going through their favorite jams thinking about life back in the days? Please tell me I'm not the only one🖐🏼✌🏼️
I was just doing that, old cheap trick, kiss, rush, zep, those were the days, i met cheap trick at a signing
Right on. I started with Motley Crue and have been all over the 70s and 80s. I recommend Sweet Ballroom Blitz
Cheap Trick is a fantastic band. Surrender is such a brilliant song. Cheap Trick forever!
THIS was in early 1978 Alot of people say the late 70s were disco LOL Ya right
Bun E. Carlos is bad ass.
He keeps amazing time, not speeding up in the snare rolls the least bit.
To this very day, one of THE BEST live bands you will ever see.
As a die hard Kiss fan, they are both great, and mind you Kiss had these guys open for them for a year and a half!!! Why do you think they said my Kiss records out? Lol
Love both bands!!!!
Bunch of us in the break room at work 1 day, discussing just how deep into insanity our jobs were driving us. I couldn't HELP but start singing "Mommy's alright, Daddy's alright...", & EVERYONE joined in on "They just seem a little weird! Surrender! Surrender!". Quite a cathartic moment, I must say. Thank you, Cheep Trick, for supplying an anthem for those of us who jitter through our days with frazzled nerves & caffeine!
this is probably one of the best performances in music history. absolutely awesome.
LIVE at The Budokan is a legendary LIVE Rock album!!!!!
It's an historical sign post.
The 80s can kiss my hairy bum ,, lol The 70s kick ass way harder than the 80s EVER DID This was from early 1978 Boys n girls
There have been some legendary live concert albums from the 70a - Budokan, Frampton Comes Alive, KISS Alive, Hot August Night .... and many more. When Cheap Trick eventually released the full version of Budokan on 2 cds I snapped it up immediately
I’m 52 years old I remember when my older sister bought this album when it was first released in 1979? Remember the whole summer we blasted this out of our open house window!! Great memories!
"the charisma of Robin Zander"
-Mike Damone
この曲を聴くと、16才にかえってしまいます。今では、叔父さんバンドのチープ・トリックも昔はアイドルバンドでした‼️
Bun E. Carlos doing the devil's work. 🤘One of the greatest rock drummers ever. So underrated. Budokan, Allman Brothers at the Fillmore,East and Frampton comes Alive are still the greatest live albums ever.
@@patandmacmusic Thanks Man. Killing myself for overlooking that one. Miles on Drums! Come on!
Love this, but not close to best live album, and these guys actually opened for the band who invented the live album, Kiss Alive!!!!
This is one of the best live albums of all times and produced so well. It was also my first album that I bought on my own.
Nobody more than 20 miles outside Budokan had heard of the place until this album.
I was a teenage kid in the 70s and 80s. And this song really helped me to cope. This song was pretty cool. This is the first time that I have seen the band sing this particular song and it is just awesome.
Drummer looks like a science teacher. Bass player looks like a plummber. What a band!
I love it, from a German in vacation in Thailand, more than 45 years later. ❤❤❤
So...my father-in- law used to tell a story. His family had moved to Rockford, Il. He was older and stayed in Joliet, Il with his wife. Not much later his brothers and sisters started telling him they needed to come to Rockford to see this great "bar band". Called Cheap Trick. Ron just passed a few months ago, he swore by those bar shows, best he ever saw till the end. God bless you buddy.
MY BFF just passed away and Cheap Trick was her Favorite Band. We went to the Washington Concert 5 yrs ago. They Are the Best New Wave Band EVER. RIP: Kim
Really brings back the time and place, 1977, just a completely different world. Years ago I lived in Seattle and often drove to Tacoma. I remember the band used to play the Emerald Queen Casino, this would probably be 20 years ago now.
was a teenager when this hit. Used to drive around with the cassette all day, this was hot in 1978... real hot
2:53 - "got my KISS records out" - that was Cheap Tricks homage to KISS for taking them out on tour in 1977 and giving them widespread coverage. Rick Nielsen sticks out his tongue !!!
The best bands are ones which have great music and sound great live. Cheap Trick is one of them!!!
I love Rick's style. Especially his facial expressions.
He's having so much FUN it really adds a killer vibe to the situation. Yep.
懐かしくて涙が出ます。青春時代です☺️
One of the greatest rock songs performed by the greatest garage band ever.
It didn't occur to me til NOW that when I took my then 18 year old daughter Sarah to see Cheap Trick open for Aerosmith at Lincoln Financial Field in 2008-ish that Cheap Trick's two big hits from "Live at Budokan" were 30 years old THEN! I keep thinking of oldies as songs from The Shirelles or The Ronettes...man I'm older than I think! 😎
The very first live band I ever saw. Age 14, summer '78 (yeah, that makes me 60) they were the starting band for Ted Nugent. I never heard of Cheap Trick before I saw them live. They were about to get well known real fast after that summer.
There was so much good music during that time period that I was just mildly interested in Cheap Trick. I dated a girl that loved them, so I took her to a small venue of about 4,000 seats to see them live. They blew the roof off of that place. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Any band/song/album recommendations?
GTA San Andreas has a radio station (it's just a playlist of 17 songs) called K-DST and most of the songs on there are rock songs from the 70s and I do find them to be great songs.
I would recommend Tatsuro Yamashita: "Solid Slider", "Funky Flushin", "Bomber", "Full Moon", "Rainy Walk", "This Could Be The Night", "Paper Doll", "2000T Of Rain", "Love Space", "Sutekina Gogowa", "Touch Me Lightly", "Last Step" (also as a part of the band Sugar Babe: "Downtown", "Show"). These are all from the 70s, but he also has great stuff in the 80s - "Kokiatsu Girl", "Christmas Eve", "Ride On Time" - Album version, "Sparkle", "Daydream", "LoveLand Island", "Music Book", "Morning Glory" and etc... His albums are usually available on TH-cam aI strongly recommend them.
I went to absolutely every concert that came around, lived between two big venues from childhood into adulthood & these guys hands down played the very best show I've ever seen/ heard. They're FUN in concert, too. They're seriously kickass & really pros. & The fact that they're grinning & having a blast the whole time adds a great vibe to it.
@@wildwoodsgirl1706 You are right, they were fun. I ended up seeing them twice. Both shows were great.
Are time whit real music my kids probably won't understand and all of you my age probably understand because we were born to listen and accept the truth and that why we different from are kids but went we will leave this world are kids will listen to are music and they will understand not blame the kids now it a different world but glad to been raised in the 70
Bun E. Carlos is just steady as a rock, damn. Not once is he rushing.
Such an amazing band. Nielsen just goes up there and has fun. 😅
Thank you Japan for bringing these guys into the limelight!
Мои кумиры!!! Море воспоминаний и положительных эмоций!!! Всем добра!!! 70-е в моём сердце до последнего его сокращения!!!
Never will we have bands like this, gotta love Cheap Trick, Thank you.
Turned 57 today and cranking the tunes I grew up with!
The most underrated band of all time.
Less a song, more an anthem
Very Happy 73rd Birthday Richard Alan Nielsen December 22, 1948. Elmhurst, IL. Thank you for all the life long favorite rock songs with Cheap Trick. Your guitars are memorable too.
One of the greatest rock bands ever, period. Every member of the band holds their own and comes together great. 🤘
Quite possibly the greatest live album ever laid to wax.
'Live at Budokan' was the biggest selling album ever up until Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' was released. Not sure where 'Live at Budokan' ranks today (maybe Frampton's 'Frampton comes Alive' surpassed it?), but I would not be surprised if its still got to have some pretty consistent sales numbers. Bun E, Carlos passed away, but the other three are still touring, great live act if you can catch them at a venue near you.
@@edrader Shut up let people be enthusiastic about things they love. Always some bitter jerk gotta rain on a parade
What a ROCKER!!!!! Junior High memories
That drum intro is so memorable.
I’ve seen them twice… I was supposed to see their 1982 show in LA, but the tickets I got from that Damone dude were counterfeit!
One of the best songs EVER writen
I totally agree. I had the pleasure of seeing Cheap Trick quite a few years ago. I was about 21 or 22 years old. Saw rhem at a place called Selland Arena in Fresno, Ca. Don't remember the year(too much party)but they came with Eddie Money and Electric Light Orchestra. Was a killer concert. Was the only concert I ever got to go to with my wife who passed away at the age of 25 just a couple of years later, so this is a very precious memory for me. Now here I am 66 years old and I'm still listening to this. Good rock just never gets old or dies.
Rick Nielsen, perfect mix of rock star and court jester! Cracks me up but don't let him fool you, he's a songwriting and guitar playing badass!
@donnie I know it's surprising to receive a private reply. How are you today?
SO GOOD, GOLDEN, HEART-RENDING, HARD-DRIVING AND HAUNTING! 😁😁😁😁😁😂😂😂😂😂😎😎😎😎😎😍😍😍😍😍😭😭😭😭😭🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🏄🏄🏄🏄🏄🌇🌇🌇🌇🌇🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I can't believe I didn't know this band, living in Europe this was under my radar and I only caught it recently from a US movie soundtrack. This song is quite obviously a root inspiration for Californian Punk Rock bands like Blink 182, Green Day and the likes (even in the dress code of some band members in this live footage). Pretty amazing... I still get blown away rediscovering 70's music!!
One of the greatest live albums ever
All I can say is, damn boy! They rock that stage better than anyone!!!!
高校の頃、クラスで(何か歌えという課題で)歌った思い出の曲です。
なつかしい😄
Robin sings “We’re all alright “ near the end of the song. That was part of the theme song for That 70’s Show, a song that Cheap Trick wrote and recorded for the show.
The way you worded that makes it seem like you are saying they wrote this song for that show . Which would quite the feat writing a song 20 years early for a tv show .
Love it how Rick is coked out of his mind but still playing a killer guitar
Speed tabs were everywhere then in Japan. Still are. Lol plus yeah. Hes looking more Tweaked out then Coked out in my expert opinion lmao
That's kinda how he is NORMALLY, or at least was. He's slowing down a bit now, only puts in five miles of running during a concert instead of 20 that sort of thing.
I was an eight - year - old boy in Japan. I was too young to recognize who they were and I lived too far away from Budokan, so I had no chance to see them playing like this. I wish I'd been born at least five years earlier.
Cheap Trick: Goes to Japan, sings a song called Surrender. Balls Of Steel!
Sony was the God in recording live music in the 70s. The Budokan (built as a martial arts arena) has horrendous acoustics and somehow Sony captured the sound of Cheap Trick, so well that many other rock bands followed suit, equating a Budokan recording with great success.
I love how Rick does an impression of Gene Simmons after the “got my Kiss records out” line..
Yeah sure mate and the JImi Hendrix lyrics are " Scuse me while I kiss this guy " not
" Scuse me while I kiss the sky "
The Go Go's lyrics are " Alex the Seal " not " Our Lips are Sealed "
Mis -heard lyrics are called Monde Greens after Lady Monde Green.
It's also a segment on Australian quiz show " Spicks n Specks "
i much prefer the lyrics I've been singing to The B-52s debut album for the last 41 years even though they are wrong. LOL!!!!!!!
Alan, also don't forget. "Rob the snack bar" by the Clash. And the timeless one, by the Knack. " My Scrotum"
At 14, this was the first vinyl album I wore out and had to buy again. Rick Nielson was a guitar god just looking for a home. Thankfully he found a power group of epic quality.
One of the very best rock songs of all time! Great rhythm, superb lyrics, and talented musicians playing it!
Couldn’t believe I had not heard this song until yesterday when I watched the film pixels
@@therunawaykid6523 The song was very popular in tne late 70s and early 80s. More than forty years ago! And still sounds great.
Amazing that the original masters of the concert were lost for over thirty years. It is practically a miracle that we can see this in TH-cam today. They were found in a vault in NYC in around 2007. I was hired to resotore and color correct the entire concert for the band's DVD set. I'm proud to be part of the concert's legacy. I grew up with this album, so it was doubly cool. Fun to realize that no one had seen this footage from 1978 until 2008. Seems it was there, but nope. It was gone. We're "all all right" now!!
Good onya mate, great job. It's great to see it again. I saw it on the tely as a young fella, and I also had the album. :)
i’m Ok with CERN, if we go back to these days...
thank you!
Many bands should colorize...seen a 75 skynyrd one recently
Congrats man that sounds like a dream to do. And that is amazing, I get sad thinking about some concerts of bands that will never exist again, iconic performances, pictures, all the stuff I was privileged to be a part of, and it's just gone forever with zero trace but a memory
