My cousin and I were going to see them at a fair, on the way it started to rain VERY hard. We decided to go anyway, showed up and there were like 20 people there, they played the concert for us. Best private show of all time, they were taking request.

You lucky bastard!!! I went to see Blue Oyster Cult in 1988 at the Pismo Beach theater..2 shows 2 hours each. I had a ticket for the first show...but a certain band member was 2 hours late...that turned into 4 hours late...to much cocaine!! But they played 4 hours...the people that waited from the first show..stayed to the second...then the people from the second left so it was just us die hards..I couldn't hear for 3 weeks!!! Greatest show besides my one Rush concert I went to.

The Japanese media called them the "American Beatles". Even though their 1st 3 albums weren't big in the U.S. in Japan all 3 went gold and when they did this concert, it was like Beatlemania. After this concert, the world went nuts over Cheap Trick. Cheap Trick at Budokan was so popular, the record label had to make more albums of it to meet the demand. One of the legendary performances by a legendary band.

I remember how my sister and I had to put our names down on a list at the local Record Bar to get a copy of this great album because it was flying off the shelves so fast. Dubbed it onto a couple of TDK cassettes and wore them out pretty fast!

They always reminded me more of The WHo. Pretty boy blond lead singer, unattractive but very flamboyant lead guitarist, who wasn't really a great guitar player but put on one hell of a show.

Yup. Man, the Cheap Trick/KISS tour in the 70's was insane energy. Budokan would have been a place to be to see that instead of Canada, but as concerts go, even Edmonton was an electric fire of a place to be.

This song will always have a special memory in my childhood. I was an 8th grader, we were at middle school trip to a local amusement park, 1979ish, Dorney Park, Allentown Pa. My group of guy friends were in line at a new ride called the Sea Dragon. It is the rocking/swinging "boat" ride that is often called the Pirate Ship. Anyway, it was a brand new ride with a lot of interest, a very long line. The "kids" who were running the ride had these massive dual 15" sub cabinets, maybe 6 of them up on the platform. They were pumping Cheap Trick I Want You. They keep blasting this song over and over again. They had it on repeat. It was the first time I heard this song, but it was the type of song you hear, and you immediately fall in love with. At this age music like this, with the guitars and drums, would give you chills down your back, I mean you were really feeling it. I don't know......like you felt immortal, you were young and had like a self-awareness moment, where you knew everything was fine, easy, stress free, abundant opportunities. There were also some girls in our group which added to the excitement and butterflies. It was 30 minutes of time that you don't forget. Thank you Cheap Trick.

We rarely fought unless it was another gang, what a different definition then, of boys. Both sides would make sure it was one on one. Life was simpler yet challenging and rewarding. Been using cannabis since I was 14. 45 years without robbing or killing anyone to get it. I hope my daughter and her generation fix all that the chosen fool and the holy sycophants have destroyed over greed and arrogance! With education, tolerance and compassion maybe we will all learn to jam together. Jfff I

I always say that myself. But they, my neighbors, also get the pleasure of listening to many movies I watch! Once, when playing the landing scene at Omaha Beach in the movie SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and listening to it through my stereo which cost more than My car, my neighbor actually came all the way down my driveway, opened the gate, came up the deck, glanced into the window, then knocked on the door! We could see him as a shadow on the curtains. And of course we could not hear the knock from inside so I turned it down fully expecting him to be upset! He asked, "are you watching Saving Private Ryan?" and I answered "of course!" He looked at me and said, "Mind if my family watches it with yours?" :)

Back in the day I got records through the mail from Columbia House. Sometimes if I didn't mail the opt out form back I got an album sent automatically. I remember getting Cheap Trick Live at the Budokan this way. I thought what the hell is this I never heard of them, but rather than going through the hassle of returning it I put it on the turn-table fully expecting to be disapointed. I think it was a week later I listened to side two, I was so blown away by side one I just kept playing it.

I'm really gonna age myself! I'm 62 and I loved Cheap Trick! I was around twenty when they hit it big! When Rick Nielson wore the baseball cap, brim up and also wore the varsity sweater he looked just like Hunts Hall when he played Satch Jones in the show The Bowery Boys! I'm not positive but I'll bet he meant to do that, probably as a tribute! Hunts Hall and Leo Gorcey were a very funny comedy duo. They started out in the thirties and forties as the dead end kids! Does anyone here agree with me about Rick Nielson? Does anyone here even know what I'm talking about?

I was covering the concert for our local paper so I had unrestricted press credentials. I stood between security and the stage so Robins voice would be heard even over the amps. It only occurred for a few years. Prior to the Beatles, big bands rarely wrote their own songs. Of course radio was deregulated in 1981 allowing monopolies to form so that the big music companies could force a major singer down people's throats until they hit #1 and making sure they didn't write their own songs, which helped keep them on a tight leash. By the late 1990's it was becoming rarer and rarer for big hits to be sung by the person who wrote it.

This is the version from the "Cheap Trick At Budokan" album, recorded live in Japan, which came out in 1979 in the US. The "original" album version of this song appeared on their album "Color" in 1977 - and it was just god-awful. If you listen to it (WARNING: you have been warned!) it sounds like Robin Zander is stoned, Rick Nielsen is asleep, and the rest of the band is unconscious. In comparison to this live version, the studio version was truly lousy, and (IMO deservedly) got very little airplay in the US. But in Japan, for reasons which defy explanation, that same version went to #1. Based on that, and one other Cheap Trick single that did well in Japan, they were booked to play the Nippon Budokan arena, and a live recording of the two shows was made which because Cheap Trick's biggest-selling album of all time. And the version of "I Want You To Want Me" which was recorded live at those concerts is like night-and-day when compared to the original album version.

wasn't a fan of theirs, until i saw them live. monumentally talented, and did NOT take themselves seriously at all. one of my favorite concert memories from amarillo, texas.

I saw them just after the Budokan album around 79 80 and they were huge. It is still the LOUDEST show I ever saw and my ears rang for 3 days. I was sitting about 8 rows back and as the words"Ladies and Gentlemen, are u ready " screamed out, I was surged toward the stage as a tidal wave of people came surging from the back. It was an unbelievable show. I remember one encore song was Day Tripper and that described it all perfectly!!

Yup they were loud when they were headlining. I first saw them in 1977 when they opened for KISS, but the second time I saw them was in 1979 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, CA They played 3rd bill with Pat Travers and Blue Oyster Cult, and I remember as Rick came onstage he said “Hey were gonna play a little bit longer today, is that ok with you” and about 35,000 roared their approval!!!!!! They played for about one hour and twenty minutes. Came back for 2 oncore’s playing “Just got back and Day Tripper” I’ve seen them live maybe 25 times, but that was the best and loudest concert I’ve ever seen them do.

@@bartonpercival2147 Wow Barton u are a devoted fan. 25 times!!! I live in NZ and seen them only twice sadly. It was surreal to be only 3 or 4 feet away from them and because of their status after the Budokan album, they were rock gods like The Beatles. I was off my face as well.
      making it more surreal.
They had to get the Mayor of Auckland City to come in and try to quell the crowd as people were jumping everywhere up in the rafters. It was recorded as 110 decibels. We are only 5million people but we love to rock down here. When The Foos played here a few years ago on one of their many tours here, the first ever seismic underground wave was recorded in history. The band is proud of that. It was a crowd of 50,000 but we get right into it and lots get high too. Yes Cheap Trick are icons. I just love Rick Neilsen, his raw sound and his image is unique. Thanks mate!

@@dannymiles6503 Wow 110 decibels that’s insane. It’s great to know that great music is enjoyed and loved throughout the world. I was just a young teenager when the Beatles invaded America, but after Cheap Tricks Budokan show, I kinda felt like I understood the mania surrounding the Beatles. Cheers indeed mate!!!!!! 👍

Great song because I want YOU to want ME, I remember when this song came out I was on my way to the beach, it was an awesome summer! I saw them in Austin, Texas. I've said it before and I will say it again "If you got to grow up anywhere in the 50's through the 80's with all the golden classic movies & music, YOU were blessed!"

I read an article about Cheap Trick. Could not match a song to the name, but I knew the name. Then, I found this, and now I’m thinking OF COURSE Cheap Trick is legendary. I didn’t even really know who they were but I knew this song.
And what happened to me is going to happen to new generations for a thousand years. Because they are that iconic that everyone has heard them, even if they don’t know it.
