    One thing a lot of people overlook when replacing brake pads, is the hardware. The sliders, pins, bushings, grommets, etc..whatever your car comes with, you should at minimum inspect the slide pins and bushings...even the caliper repair kits that allow you to replace the bushing for the caliper piston can all go bad and cause uneven wear on your pads. Its very important to use brake lubricant/grease any time you service your brakes. You can even just pull off the calipers, pull out the slide pins, clean them, grease them, and put them back (and grease the back of the pad where the piston touches and the edges where the brake pad bracket rests on the caliper bracket). This will help with squeaking or performance issues. While your outter pads may LOOK good, your inner pads could be nearly completely gone, you wont know until you fully inspect the pads. Dont drive 50k miles on them just because you dont hear squeaking or grinding.

    What about bedding for the OEM brakes on a new performance car?
    Is it done at the factory? If not, why isn’t bedding recommended for the first owner to do immediately?

      new cars have new rotors too, so all perfect surface and don't need a brake bedding

      @@sonnyy.8082 just because it is a perfect surface does not mean it does not need brake bedding. When you install brand new two piece rotors, sometimes carbon ceramic sometimes not. Even those instructions insist on doing a proper brake in bedding procedure. That is the whole point behind the bedding procedure, it is for NEW rotors and pads. Just because it is a perfect surface does not mean it doesn't have to be bedded. The layer of film that is applied from the pad onto the rotor needs to be burned off so its a clean contact between the rotor and the pad itself.

    hey I have the same brakes and I also got the slotted ultimax rotors from EBC, I was wondering if you had any squealing noices from the brakes once you did the bedding procedure? I would appreciate the feedback, thanks.

    OEM perform so something like 100-50 kph braking for a hundred times when bedding new material for evaluation. Good pressure, but not really hard. Cooling at least 3 kilometers between brakings for low temperatures of first stops, then rising to about 250°C at the end. Takes 3-4 hours, of course not suitable for everybody. Just do more hard brakings after just cruising around for a good bedding. µ will be higher earlier!

    What about breaking in a new clutch and flywheel? A clutch is basically a really big brake right?

      @@danielcamacho1913 he meant physically, kinda like a giant rotor. anyways, break in for a clutch is different as it's supposed to rotate with friction and not stop with friction, hence the clutch break in is just light driving to not scorch the surface

    EBC has their "brake in" coating that is very grabby and abrasive which prepares the rotor for bedding. When the grabbiness changes, it's time to need the pads

    Paul, this is often overlooked. I have recently had trouble bedding in performance pads with new rotors on my Tiguan. After 10k, when they get hot, the squeal like a garbage truck on trash day. I have pulled the pads, sanded the pad surface and scuffed the rotor surfaces with a cookie wheel in a die grinder, relubed everything and I still have the squeal when hot. I may try EBC next time, so far, not happy with my choice of pads.

    I know it’s not the same topic or engine as the GTI but someone may know the answer. On the 1.8T Gen 3 is it bad for the car to put a blow off valve on since it’s designed for a diverted valve?

    The initial 100 to 200 miles is for the brake-in coating to wear off and prep the rotors.
    The first cycling is to cure the resins in the pads.
    The second is for pad material transfer

      @@morscovium8881 It depends on the brake pad they slap on. Some brake pads, you can just drive and brake gently to slowly get the pad transfer layer on. Some brake pads are the abrasive type, so you don't need to bed them in to get a layer of pad material on the rotor. Others are the adherent type, which requires the a layer of the pad material to be transferred to the rotor, which some require bedding, others you can drive and brake gently until it happens. The ones in the video requires bedding, as outlined earlier. if you slap on pads where the manufacturer doesn't require bedding, then you follow that manufacturer's instructions.
      Plus, you don't immediately bed in the pads. You have to give it a little time to break in the pads and rotors, so mechanics won't do it as part of the brake service, if they are installing aftermarket pads which the manufacturer requires bedding.

    Replaced my Rotors and Pads today.
    When I tried out the car afterwards it pulls to the right when braking medium hard at about 80-90km/h.
    Could this be a temporary problem? There were no problem replacing the brakes, everything looked fine and no rust visibile to the guide pins.
    New grease is applied.
    No noise or anything just pulls right.

      @@tt-rs1457 It brakes perfectly now. Did never thought it could go away like that. Took about 2 weeks of normal driving. Last inspection I got perfect balance on braking left and right side.

    I was told to drive my car for 100 miles use brakes little and often when needed, nothing was mentioned
    about the 60 mph to 0 braking to me so thanks for that, i understand the 100 miles is to allow the axle to
    wear the pad even to the disc as the suspension works, i have strange insignia VXR suspension ,
    mine is an astra GTC 2.0 CDTI 2014 model and that is what im doing, i used to be able to throw my
    brakes on from 80mph and stop very quickly 40ft maybe less, after the 100 miles i will do these
    5 brakes in a row from 60 mph but what if i have new discs is it the same process.

      Muhaa Haloa yes, apply grease to the rotors and pads. Works wonders

      907jlk do not apply grease to your brakes and rotors, that is how you have brake failure. Only apply the given copper anti seize on the back of the brake pad and the points at which it slots into the top part of the caliper. Do not apply copper anti seize or any other sort of compound to brakes or rotors.

      No 60-0. 60-10. Don't completely stop with foot on the brakes until you have completed the 5 stops and then drove at speed for long enough to allow the rotors and pads to cool.

    I just installed these pads and rotors on my GTI a couple weeks ago, but my pamphlet says 60-20MPH. Their web site says something different, this video says something different, what do I even go by?

      You need to bleed your brakes to get air out of the system. That's what causes a soft brake pedal.

      thats a sign of air in the system, also of old fluid with moisture contamination. consider doing a fluid change to flush all the old fluid out when you bleed your system. If you have ABS, you might have to take it to a shop to bleed, as they have special scan tools that can force open all the ABS solenoids to let the air pass through.

    So, I’m supposed to use that packet of grease and spread it on my pads and rotors and then take it for a spin? I’m cornfused. I always wondered where that grease went

      Put the grease on the back of the pads, and on the sides, anywhere you see that the pads touch parts on the car.
      Do NOT put it on the rotor, and NOT on the front of the pads.
      This grease is to slightly help prevent friction from causing noises like creaks and squeals from the caliper squeezing them together with the caliper.

      Brake fade is completely normal. You are actually doing your brake bedding properly by reaching that point.

      its for all new pads, the pads and rotors still need to be 'mated'(bedded) to function properly. However, the rears undergo much less heat and force as a major portion of your braking is done with the fronts.

    after i had bedded in my breaks a few days later of just normal driving i noticed a dark pad imprint on the rotor im not sure why this happened but is there anyway to get rid of this ?

      sounds like you've bedded incorrectly , this can happen if you are coming to a complete stop down from 60mph , when bedding you dont want to come to a complete stop , maybe drive for a little bit left foot braking and have the brakes gently grazing the disks for a mile or 2 and let them cool and repeat the bedding in process , i could be wrong but thats what id do as the reason you have a a dark spot or high spot is that you were braking hard to a complete stop and left a imprint of the pad on the disk when the pads were red hot , best of luck

      you clearly are heating them up but then you need to cool them down with OUT stopping when they are hot and you stop completely that is what causes the imprint

      Riding the brake pedal in stop and go traffic really heats up brakes, then car is parked and the pad cooks against the rotor. Also, your caliper may not be retracting well, which will wear down those pads quicker than the others.

      you mean your handbrake to pull when car is stopped you dont use it in emergencies lmao

      Yes, your handbrake uses your rear brakes. It might use the main calipers or it might have it's own tiny brake, depending on what kind of car you have. You want to know which it is, in case you ever have an emergency like if you boil your brake fluid on a mountain road. If you have a tiny little parking brake, it's not going to take very much heat before it warps.

    I recently had new discs fitted months ago and I somehow managed to warp them. So what if videos like this helped me understand I had the car Lexus 450h f sport for two years I’ve always dragged the brakes with discs bought car with (also my first automatic car owned) I warped my new discs not understanding why Lexus never told me anything about bedding in as well.
    Interesting he mentions the E brake my one that’s also got e brake. I’ve been trying my best now everyday to not brake hard or drag/hold brakes down before I park it up at work in mornings now and after coming straight off a 50mph road dual carriageway and roundabout combo. I’ve been using the paddles to gear brake a lot now going down 1 or 2 gears to assist slowing down and cutting speed before being forced to stop now to which bearing in mind I did that with all my manual cars but never before with this car last two years which is my first automatic car owned.

    The e-brake has zero effect on heat because the pads / shoes are not moving relative to the disc / drum unless you drift.

      kdmq true, but I think what he was saying is avoid parking with the e-brake when the brakes are already hot, as you will be leaving the hot pads and rotors touching, which could leave uneven deposits and cause you to have a bad time

      It's called glazing. Pads work better against a glazed surface compared to metal

      Yes, it is used in emergencies, kid. If you boil your brake fluid on a mountain road, what else would you use? You use the brake that isn't hydraulic. When Toyotas were having their runaway acceleration issue, a Camry owner used her *emergency* brake because the car wasn't responding to pedal inputs.

      If it's designed purely as a parking brake, and the manufacturer wants to make real sure you don't use it in an emergency, it will be an extra pedal on the far left.

      in a car with an automatic transmission, which is 98% of cars, it is an emergency brake, because you never use it unless you have to keep your vehicle from moving for some reason, like changing a flat on the side of the highway. Its only a "handbrake" to drifty bois who like to beat their car to pieces in parking lots.

I'm from Scotland but I've been living in Canada for 13 years meow. in the UK 99% of cars are MANUAL transmission, they have Handbrake because it's just a brake you use your hand to pull the lever.. That's all. Now, over here in N.America, they call it the Emergency brake, because like you guys have pointed out, most cars are automatics and for some odd reason, a lot of cars over here have the "e-Brake" as a sort of weird pedal off to the far left side. Now, coming from Europe where most people drive manuals, it was impossibly hard for me getting used to not having a HAND brake. But instead some weird little brake pedal. SOME automatics, usually smaller cars have handbrakes.
      This all boils down to European terminology vs N.American terminology. Euros call it a handbrake, cause it's a brake used by the hand. Simple as that. Pretty crazy how people use different terms for things when they are thousands of miles apart, hey guys!?? woooooh. Everyone is a weirdo in this world!
