    The idea of this not being the actual greatest song in the world, but rather a tribute, because they forgot the greatest song in the world is perhaps one of the most brilliant songwriting concepts ever. Even if you don't like it because it's "just a comedy song", the central conceit of the song itself deserves praise for its brilliance.

    The D was absolutely a different take on the monster-ego quasi-parody rock persona that The Darkness was delving into in the early 2000s.

    It really is masterfully written and composed. It's proggy without being bloated. That short a cappella section harkens back hundreds of years to powdered wigs and harpsichords, while remaining playful and fun...and not pompous or stuffy. And the song also calls back to the old American blues tradition of meeting the devil at a crossroads. And it also hints that maybe the best song in the world is "Stairway to Heaven", which I wouldn't necessarily agree with, but can appreciate.
    And I just want to say to you Justin, that I always appreciated your band and your music for having a bit of a tongue-in-cheek approach towards the grandiosity of 70s arena rock. I always say that parody has to come from a place of love, because otherwise it's just mean-spirited. And although The Darkness isn't a comedic or parody band per se, I think you guys put just enough of that into your music and performances to let the audience know that you're not taking yourselves too seriously.

    I LOVE Tenacious D! Jack Black is so underrated as a musician & singer. I mean is there anything that he doesn't approach w/ ridiculous energy & passion? Not surprised Justin digs them at all. A tip of the hat to an extra great episode.

    The concept of this song is amazing. When you start to jam and freestyle an epic tune but after the jam you forget it. So important to record !

    Both tenacious d and steel panther craft really good melodic songs. They may have silly lyrics but they're really good songs.
    And Jack Black and Kyle Gass harmonize really good together.

    I laughed for months when that first album came out, but I also regarded it as a tender, affectionate tribute to the music we both obviously adore. And the fact that my boyfriend seranaded me with "Fuck her Gently" soon after will forever cement this album in my nostalgic favorites. 🤘🏻😂🤘🏻

    Two things can be true at the same time, it can be a "send up" but also brilliant as a stand-alone. For instance, Stonehenge and Big Bottom by Spinal Tap are awesome and I would buy the music from that film even if it weren't a Mockumentary.

    so... what we have here is a tribute... to the tribute... of the greatest song in the world. I think I should put up a video lionizing this clip above. Which would then be a tribute to... the tribute to... you get it. Great video, LOVE the D. Saw them live and it was as great as you'd think. but better. Besides the brilliant comic chops, JB is a frighteningly good and capable singer. Same with KG on guitar, watching him was a master class on acoustic.

    Tribute and I Believe in a Thing Called Love are both ridiculous and glorious. They're just so fun. Both videos are classic too. "We'll be rocking till the sun goes down" falsetto is over the top silly and compares to the goofy demon voice "plaaayy the best sooong in the world, or I'll eat your souls." Brilliant!

    It's a tribute to three songs: Metallica’s "One", Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and-obvious from the lyrics-Charlie Daniels Band’s "The Devil Went Down To Georgia"

  • @cragsniff81

  • @paulelverstone8677
    @paulelverstone8677 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    This is so difficult not to sing along to - it's an absolute bonafide rock classic. I'd heard that it was a Tribute to Stairway, as JB is a huge Zep fan. Some have said 'The Devil went down to Georgia'. First time I'd heard it was after Metallica's 'One'
    But up there with ACDC'S Big Balls, Aerosmith's Big ten inch, Whitesnakes Slide it In or pretty much anything by Steel Panther. Comedy rock is alive and well, my friends...
