I like the Jayhawks and know that Petty partially nicked Waiting for the Sun, but they go to the F and the songs have very little in common other than the first two chords. Plus Benmont plays on both.
I was aware that Meisner recorded bass on Hotel California but saying B Schmit is funnier and let's face it, it's been his since '77 and he's got a GE Smith/Cryptkeeper vibe.

I don't know why I started watching this. There's no way I really wanted to watch a thirty-nine minute video about Dani California. I wasn't even sure if 'stink' was being used in the negative at first. I thought maybe it was being used as praise, like "Man, that's a stinky groove. Play it again!" But every minute that past just reeled me in further and I couldn't stop. This shit is gold!

the thing is, I will *always* love Dani California despite how bad it is because Stadium Arcadium was to me what Pinkerton was to you. That came out when I was 14 and first really learning guitar and I still go back and listen to that album fondly.

I’ve always thought that Dani California is way too chili pepperish for its own good. It’s like a caricature of an RHCP song: California, nonsense lyrics, “ayo”, etc. Everything people make fun of them for, turned up to 11.

I don’t know the last time I’ve laughed so hard as when the “something for the ladies” combo of the opening of Joni Mitchell’s “All I Want” and a picture of a couch covered in throw pillows cut in for three seconds.
The first concert I went to that my parents didn’t drag me to was Chili Peppers in ‘99. They were promoting “Californication” and supporting them was Foo Fighters who were promoting “There is Nothing Left to Lose”. Chili Pepper and Foo Fighters on the same show after each dropped a massive album that were actually good. And John was back in the band. Amazing show. I went with my friend who was a massive Chili Peppers fan.
I could never really get into Chili Peppers post “Californication”. Partially because my music tastes changed to harder and faster stuff, but partially because I just didn’t think anything post ‘99 lived up to “Californication”. That was such a good album.
Have you checked out "By The Way" album? In my opinion it's the only one that comes close to Californication. The Zephyr Song, Can't Stop, Dosed, Venice Queen. It's got some really great songs in my opinion

I'm convinced that there was a trend of bands and artists adding something like "in the [insert country name]" so they could capitalize on an international audience. Aside from Springsteen, most bands I've seen who have that kind of stuff just replace the last word with whatever country or city they're playing in at the moment.
So instead of "R-O-C-K in the USA" they could say something like "R-O-C-K in the [.] UK" or "R-O-C-K in Canada-eh!" Shit like that. I've seen it a bunch of times in old songs.

I'm gonna take a crack here, even though few people will ever see it, because he did challenge us to defend Kiedis:
I have no musical talent. I can't understand why starting a chorus on a given note or chord is a bad thing. I yield all those points. I also can't defend the rips. There is a lot of lifting. Given the music video for this song, maybe they couldn't leaned into it and said "we wanted to build a song entirely out of other songs we like, and see where that goes." That could be fun. But they didn't.
But my main point is that the trick to enjoying RHCP lies in changing your expectations. See, there are a lot of bands with good singers. Maybe too many. But there is only *one* band with Anthony Kiedis. Any idiot could pick his voice out of an auditory police lineup. No one has ever mistake him for a different singer, and vice versa. The Chili Peppers without him are just some fuckin' band, and that would be tragic.
Science cannot explain Tony Flow. By all rational understanding, he should not have been successful. I don't generally advocate reading celebrities' memoirs, but I recommend his. They are an utter fever dream. The man's primary talents were shooting smack and leeching money from women, and his friend said "please dance and rap on stage for us" and never gave him the Sid Barrett no matter how badly he deserved it. I'm not sure anyone has ever tripped over their own dick into such heights of money, fame and even Grammys on this level. He is the Tommy Wiseau of music. No, he is the Lord Timothy Dexter of music. Forgive him, for he knows not what he does...he just knows not.
I am so unmusical that for a long time, I could only get into music if I really liked the lyrics. I was baffled by songs far more coherent than RHCP songs. But accepting that most lyrics are trite and pointless, and that they're just a mechanism for the vocal melody, is very freeing. Kiedis is simply the next level of this. In much the same way you have to "unfocus" your eyes to see those 3D Magic Eye images, to appreciate this band you have to "unfocus" the part of your brain that parses language. And it's hard! I still cannot see those stupid Magic Eye things. But being upset that Anthony Kiedis lyrics don't make sense is like being upset that one of those trippy "Deep Dream" machine-learning-AI-generated images aren't photorealistic. You're looking at it backwards! You're *supposed* to wonder if you're going insane.
So, fine, if it helps I will say it: I like the band, and the song stinks. It stinks and it's fun. And I'm going to listen to it again now and sing along to it, because I am an even worse singer than Tony Kiedis and I need things that don't challenge me too much.
The best thing for me that's resulted from the existence of Dani California is that I'm now listening to Shine On You Crazy Diamond
