Tenacious D is criminally underatted. Wonderboy is one hell of a song to react too... almost like a ballad with the amazing comedy and wit in the writing as well

They are also wonderfully entertaining in concert. I’ve seen a few shows, they bring the same level of energy and playfulness live. Every single time.
They're not underrated as they have a significant fan base, and their last concept album wasn't that great and took a very long time to take off so Jack Black had to do a show on his kids youtube just to get anyone to find it because it was released on youtube and for a year or more barely anyone watched it.
They're great, but they're rated about where they should be now a days. They're not what this song is as artists anymore.
Jack Black is really leaning into being a dad and getting old in ways that make me sad, but that's probably selfish of me. He doesn't really have this level of energy anymore. He hurt himself on Conan practicing for a sketch just running into a doorway. 🤷♂️

In the show which came before the album, the middle of the song was much different. The greatest song to them was Stairway to Heaven and they sang different lyrics on top of it. Definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it!

I worked at a music shop in 2001 that had a cassette sampler of this. Listened over and over until the full LP was released, we all thought it was something special.

You'll be blown away if you dive into Dave Grohl's story. The man is an absolute GOD in music, no matter the genre. Nirvana, Foo Fighters, offered to be a Heartbreaker by Tom Petty, Dream Widow, Queens of the Stone Age, Tenacious D. The list goes on forever and the guy does everything for everyone and kills it every single time.
I think it would take less time to list the bands Dave Grohl's NOT in! 🤣🤣🤣 He's the King-- he's like a kid in a candy store who wants to play with EVERYONE, and they all want to play with him so he CAN!!! AND he's got mad bbq skills! 😁
And has jammed with every amazing rock star on the planet.
Also his book is really really really spectacular.
Dave Grohl is also just an awesomely humble and down to earth guy. He wrote a song called "The Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners" after he found out that one of the men who survived a mineshaft collapse was a fan of Foo Fighters as well.

Dave Grohl’s pretty much my biggest inspiration, he was the first drummer I ever saw play on the internet, and now I’ve been a drummer since I was 7, plus Foo Fighters, Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age are all some of my favourite bands (especially QOTSA)

This man is a bard. He sings songs that tell stories. And his voice is just...amazing. he is charismatic. He is fun. His songs and stories reflect who and what he is.

Fun fact: The microphone Jack is singing into can be clearly seen at 15:26 in the video. It is the broadcast version of the legendary Buchannon Hammer, The Electro Voice 664. The broadcast version has a matte finish so it would not shine in bright camera lights. It had a slightly different model number, the EV 666! We might say, "The Devil's microphone". Only a handful of viewers would have found that little "Easter Egg" but you know darned well, Jack and Kyle knew.
Dave Grohl is a legend. And "does he play guitar" - he plays everything. :) He did the first Foo Fighters album solo, playing all the instruments and singing. I think it took him a week to do the whole album. :)
He never interned to actually sell the album or make the band. It was a passion project of his to help him cope with the death of Kirk Cobain.

This song came out 5 years before "The Pick of Destiny." They used this song as the inspiration for the movie.

That's partly true. They had a really low budget tv show first, and there is where the characters, some songs and "Tenacious D lore" originally comes from if my memory serves me correct.

They were also a pretty established gig band in LA before they got the HBO show, and a lot of songs were written before it, can't say which ones were or weren't.
The version on the HBO show basically is saying Stairway to Heaven is the “greatest song in the world” that they can’t remember. In the show version of the song the play a few of Stairway’s notes early on.

Did you also notice Kyle was making normal "ah" sounds while Jack is riffing all over the place. I think part of their brilliance is that Kyle plays the "straight man" to Jack's insanity.

My favourite part about this is watching Elizabeth completely forget to do any vocal analysis and just have a great time watching this video. So, SO wholesome. 15/10 A+++ would watch again.
Actually, “Tribute” came first, and “The Pick of Destiny” is inspired by the song. The ending of the movie is to set the stage, by way of prequel, for the song.

The part with the outside of the booth is my favorite. You see them inside and it sounds amazing. Then flash to outside and it's like slightly off. Leads you to think that they don't sound as good as they do in their head. We know they are that good... But I love that.

Fun fact: Dave Grohl actually drums on the album version of all of Tenacious D's songs. They have a different drummer they use when they tour, but Dave's the one you're hearing here in addition to playing the demon.

I've been rocking to Tenacious D for 20+ years and it's just as good now as it was then. JB has one of the most versatile voices out there. He puts his whole heart into every song.

Yep. And they filmed multiple versions of "Tribute" before the final version with Dave Grohl.. who later reprised his role as Satan in Picl of Destiny.
About Dave Grohl:
He can do everything... The first Foo Fighters album was recorded entirely by himself (every instrument), before the band actually exists...
Also, he did an amazing song called 'Play' which is 20+ minutes long with him playing lots of different instruments.

Lots of different instruments? He plays guitar, base guitar, an amateur one handed level of keyboard, and of course the drums, which is the only instrument he absolutely excells. But dont get me wrong, he is a musical genius.

I love the way Jack Black plays with sounds and his voice is super expressive. I think "The Metal" or "Wonderboy" are both great songs showcasing his talent, but if you want to die laughing, they have a skit called "Inward Singing" that you must listen to in your spare time. 🤯

Dave Grohl is one of the most talented yet humble musicians of our time. His musical history is absolutely insane. My heart breaks for him for what he has gone through and is going through now

Jack Black is one of the most underrated singers today: his voice has a timbre that sounds almost like he has more than one voice singing at the same time, and man can he belt it out. Did you notice all of the vocal transitions during the giggle fee section? Plus the man has so much energy!
They released a cover of "Wicked Game" a few months ago and Jack Black's voice in it is phenomenal, even if its under 2mins.
Jack Black has an unexpectedly soulful voice. You wouldn't know from his speaking voice that this huge, cutting, soulful boom was hidden within it. Hugely underrated. He's the quintessential artist. He's good at just about every form of art there is. And he has such a unique way of combining his talents into one amazing package. JB is the man. Love his work.

I can't even tell you how joyful it is watching you discover songs I have loved for a long time. It's like hearing them for the first time all over again and living vicariously through your unfiltered response. So lovely. I've heard this song so many times that I'd forgotten just how funny and charming it really is.
The irony is, Tribute actually IS the greatest and best song in the world!
The D is so underrated. Fantastic musicianship, singing and KG is a KILLER guitar player. The chord progressions are based on Stairway to Heaven, which they played in the HBO show. Long live the D!

I’ve just found your channel and this video. I saw Tenacious D live several years ago, and they were hands down one of the best concerts I have ever been to. Not only do I love their music, it was like a mini stage production throughout the whole show. If they ever tour again, would 100% go and see them again.
'Wonderboy', by Tenacious D, is a must-listen. JB shows an insane vocal range in that one, and KG does an incredible acoustic guitar solo. Great harmonies in there too.

I absolutely love watching you gush over JB's amazing talent. Every time I listen to Tenacious D, I can't help but gush myself, I literally can't listen to them without singing along.
This song is an homage to Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.
You can hear the final notes of Stairway at the end of the song, and the pre-chorus of "..and we played the first thing that came to our heads..." follows the same 3 chord progression from the ending of Stairway (Am, G, F)
The guitar solo is also the solo form Stairway.

With due respect, at least according to Wikipedia, this song was actually inspired by Metallica's song, "One"...although the compositional similarities to Stairway are quite obvious.
Wikipedia is user-edited and fluid. However, the reference to the song "One" with regard to this TD tune has endured on Wikipedia's description and back story of "Tribute" for at least 7 years.
So I'm left with the impression that, although the song is obviously Zeppelin-derivative, it is actually dedicated to Metallica's "One".

I love how she is so technical, but also so giddy when she really enjoys a song.
On the first Foo Fighters album, Dave Grohl played and recorded every instrument himself, aided only by his producer, Barrett Jones. “Marigold,” the song he submitted to Nirvana when he auditioned to be their drummer, was another wholly Dave-performed track. He’s an incredibly talented musician.
According to the lore the actual song that played for the demon was Stairway to Heaven, which is where a lot of the cord progressions come from.

If you loved Tenacious D's 'Tribute' and you want more, try 'Wonderboy' from the same album. There is more flipping between wistful ballad-style singing and manic narration for the story of Wonderboy and Young Nastyman joining forces, with more made-up word sound effects and crazy lyrics. And cosplay.

Dave Grohl completely played all the instruments on Foo Fighters debut album. He's an amazing musician. And if you watch the Foo Fighters video of the song Learn to Fly, JB and Kyle are in there as well. They've been doing things together for a long time.
He's also been the drummer for Tenacious D on a lot of their live performances.

That actually may not be far off from the truth. There was a song he talked about that the band was having issues getting in to record. So he played instruments and they mixed them. Then later the rest of the band came in and and actually recorded their parts
Low is the best foo fighters video ever. JB and DG are hilarious in it.
I like how Jack mixes the singing styles/techniques of DIO and some 90's grunge bands. He takes a little bit of everything from the bests.
Its like a smooth low key flex. Like he threw in some Blue Traveller just to say "hey guys remember them? I can do that too"
Agreed, and it seems like that is lost on a lot of listeners outside of the context of that time. It's a shame, because it really adds to the song.
It's so fun and joyous to see someone experience this music for the very first time. Seriously, the more you laughed & giggled, it brought me back to hearing it for the first time myself, and reminded me how much I giggled and was blown away at the same time.
I remember when this first came out there were two versions kicking around, this one, and another that clearly played the opening chords to Stairway To Heaven at one point.
The stairway to heaven version has very different sounds including vocal inflexions. It's how I learned the song so I prefer that version a lot. Can find it on youtube at this moment.

In his recent visit to Hot Ones he had multiple times in the interview where he said he couldn't play other songs or couldn't believe how good some other drummers were, like the dude from The Police. The dude is no Larnell Lewis, not by a long shot. It's fine if you like his music, but you need a reality check if you think Foo Fighters is technically anywhere in the same Galaxy as Gojira, Devin Townsend, Mastodon, Leprous, Tool or tons of other bands.

Next time you do Tenacious D, totally recommend "Wonderboy." Some of Jack Black's best vocals in my opinion. Also "The Metal" is a great second choice just based on how fun the song is.

I don't have a very deep understanding of singing, but I think both of those songs are worth listening to in general. I think Jack Black sings well in both, but they're also just fun to listen to.

I have always said if tenacious d came out in the 70's, they would have been in the same convo as led zeppelin. Lots of fantasy in the writing, great playing, vocal range, etc. But I love how talented they are, and still use comedy to enhance it all!

The D hold such a special place in my heart. I know all of their songs and old HBO episodes by heart. However, believe me when I say that watching you react to this video was one of the best Tenacious D experiences I have ever had!! I laughed along with you and felt so much joy watching you experience their wit and music the way you did. There's a fan interview you must watch where JB and KG come out and surprise the fans by playing their favorite song, you will love it it's absolutely amazing!! My brother in law introduced me to these guys not long after this album came out. I'd seen Jack Black in High Fidelity (amazing music-based movie, well worth reacting to) so I knew he could sing but I had no idea he was in a band. This track specifically blew my mind. So funny. So great musically. Best band of all time. Fantastic reaction.
Jack Black honestly is such an underrated rock singer. His yells and higher pitch distorted singing is so great. His voice is also just so "personalized"?? His voice is just so recognizable. I absolutely love the dude. He is one of those gems we need to protect. Id say he's in the Keanu Reaves group of people

I've been a fan of Tenacious d since they started. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert in Vancouver. They don't disappoint at all. Very theatrical and just great talent. Jack Black and Kyle Gass take being the greatest band in the world really serious. 🤙✌️🤟👍

When I was working on my associates degree I took History of Rock n' Roll as an elective. The end of semester project was a research project to find one song from each decade of Rn'R (1950s-2020s) AND a cover version of that song and make PowerPoint presentation. I went a little bit over board and ended up up multiple songs for a handful of decades, but I made the centerpiece of my presentation Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven" because it it the greatest song in the world (don't worry "Bohemian Rhapsody" was also included and it was made clear that it is the only competitor to "Stairway to Heaven"). The cover that I used for "Stairway to Heaven" was a live version of "Tribute" with Dave Grohl on the drums and the last few notes Jack Black played were from "Stairway to Heaven". It was perfect. Pretty sure my professor will use my presentation as an example for as long as he teaches that class lol.

He's mostly known for his position as a drummer in various bands, including names like _Nirvana_ and _Queens of the Stone Age_ (as well as _Tenacious D_ at times btw.), and his vocals in the _Foo Fighters_ - but he's also a natural on the other instruments.
Oh damn did not know he was in queens of the stone age! Never seen any videos of that band but they have some nice tunes!
