    What Dirk does to this song is nothing short of phenomenal.
    We're all familiar with the almost happy go lucky feel of the original song but by changing the drums slightly it makes the song actually heart breaking.
    The impact the drums have on a song should never be underestimated

    Dirk Verbeuren is/was a legend way before Megadeth - imo they were lucky to get him. Love or hate the genre/s he got known for, when it comes to blast beats/death metal ... he is routinely counted among the best. He brings the "Ringo, Bonham, and Rich" mindset and inventiveness to those genres. He's solid as oak, and has this thing for making familiar sound songs sound fresh. His fill work is amazing.

  • @apolyon652
    @apolyon652 ปีที่แล้ว +91

    Hey Justin, when playing double kick you will typically add a drop clutch to the top hi-hat cymbal which allows you to set an "open" spacing which can be closed by hand - either closing it with your fingers or tapped by a drum stick. This allows you to play with a tight or washy hi-hat sound without using your hi-hat pedal, although you can still use the pedal to close the hi-hat if needed. You can see it in some of the close shots of his left hi-hat. He also uses a remote hi-hat on the right side, which can also be a different size to the main hats for tonal variation. Hope this helps!

    Drummer here! You often get very special clamp for the hi-hat stand that bolts it to the kick drum. This eliminates the need for the extra legs that make the stand a tripod, normally. That way you don't have to span quite as far from the left kick to the hi-hat pedal. They're side-by-side once you've done that. I dunno what maniacs like Ginger Baker and Nick Mason did, back in the day. There may have been some hacksaw-and-gaff tape magic at work.
    As for what you do with the hi-hat while you're playing that extra kick drum: A lot of the time the drummer just moves his right hand to the ride cymbal or floor tom. A lot of guys keep their hi-hats fairly close together, even in fully the open position, so that if they are playing hi-hat while doing the dugga-dugga, it's just a bit of slosh. Sterling Campbell keeps his hats so close that you can barely slide the tip of an ink pen in between them, even though he plays single pedal pretty much all the time. Honestly, how far do you need the hi-hats to open, after all?

    Drummer and Drumeo member here. I don’t play double kick but know that for those who do, the left foot moves between hi hat pedal and left kick pedal. Also, Drumeo just released an another video in this series where a Julliard Jazz professor plays “In Bloom” by Nirvana.

    • @NikkLiberos
      @NikkLiberos ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yes!!! And most of us who play double kick either have a drop hi-hat clutch (which is pretty nifty. Lars, for example, uses it) OR two hi-hats, one regular and another one by the ride cymbal, either closed tight or half closed, kinda shimmery.

    • @tryste_mx
      @tryste_mx ปีที่แล้ว +7

      When playing double kick I like to have my left kick pedal tucked in as close to the hi hat pedal as possible, so I can keep my left heel on the hi hat and play open/closed hi hat patterns while being able to throw in double kick triplets.
      When I'm fully wailing on the double kicks, I'll use a hi hat clutch as necessary, like @NikkLiberos mentioned above.

Not only was the songwriting and mix so much better, but it was Dirk's first album with them and I'd never heard drumming like that before. He's a legend in the metal world for his abilities and feel.
    My brother had the pleasure of touring with Soilwork several years ago. He said Dirk is the sweetest dude and he'd pretty much grown into the role of running most of the logistical machinery behind the band. We've been happy to see him get the Megadeth gig, though it does bum me out that he can't really be "Dirk" in that band. But I'm sure he's enjoying the perks.

  • @p0esbek
    @p0esbek ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Justin, to answer your hi-hat double kick question; when you’re playing double kicks/pedals the hi-hats tend to usually stay open for the duration of the part. Some drummers use their heel to try to keep the hats down whilst the balls of their feet operate the other pedal, sometimes they have half a foot on the hi hat pedal and half a foot on the kick to keep the hats pulsing.
    Another cool thing that exists is a clutch that the drummer can hit to drop the hi hats if they need them closed-ish and stomping on the hi hat pedal locks the clutch to the cymbal again opening it up once more.
    If they’re not doing that, they will have a completely separate hi hat that is always closed or is operated with a remote pedal or sometimes even the latter with a clutch.
    There are many options out there. I hope it was informative!

      @@Howitchewstofeel5gum well… if you read the lyrics, they’re not exactly happy, dance party stuff. The original is the original, but I’m in the camp that thinks Dirk’s version draws out an emotional element better fitting the lyrics than the original. Just an opinion of course.

    I’m a rock and metal drummer but started playing jazz so my foundation is rooted in fundamental rudiments, improv and swing. It’s helped my fills and comfort with trying new genres. I would love to do something like this.

    @11:00 There's a few techniques. Normally the foot comes completely off and your hats aren't separated that much-or are as separated as you've made them on the radius rod-or you have a second set of hats (like he does) that aren't open that much.
    But also there's heel-toe techniques where the foot's on both pedals based on preference of which has heel and which has toe. Personally, I leave a bit of heel on the hat to keep it closed how I like and toe the kick. But there's also a technique on a single kick where drummers use the heel to hit once, then the toe to hit again off the bounce in one motion. Using heel-toe on hats, they tend to keep their toe on the hat pedal and bounce their heel on the extra kick since they're so good at heel bouncing. I find that harder, but I imagine it's more precise if mastered. Normally this is used for quick blips that you pivot over too, but nothing constant-way too much effort.
    Lastly, the easiest and laziest is to just put feet on the kick pedals and RH over on the ride or crashes. Generally that's in part of a song where you're doing that with the RH anyway for more texture and using double-kick adds even more texture depending how full you want to go. Here he's doing that with the second set of hats not opened much, so it's a less full thrash sound compared to cymbals that ring out much longer.

    11:10 Exactly that so hi-hat pedal on the left, then double bass typically to the right of that pedal. For people with only one bass drum these pedals are connected with a rod that twists to kick the beater; so it'd be tough to have the hi-hat pedal anywhere else. (can use a floating hi-hat of course!)

    Personally my favourites of these videos drumeo have done have been the ones with domino, her attitude is infecitous and they genuinely push her right out of her comfort zone with the songs they give her but she still absolutely kills it.

    Regarding the use of 2 bass drums and hi-hat, one way to deal with this is to use a drop-clutch. The hi-hat clutch is the the fitting that holds the top hat cymbal to the inner rod which moves up and down with the hat pedal. A drop clutch has a little lever which when hit with a stick, drops the top hat cymbal down on to the bottom cymbal (which you would do as you swap your left foot from hat pedal to left bass drum pedal) so that when you are using two bass drums the hats are set to a kind of loosely closed position.
    When you swap your foot back to hat pedal and press your foot down, the drop-clutch picks the top hat cymbal back up and the hi-hat system works as normal.

    As for hi-hats, there's multiple ways double bass players play them. Dirk has two, the main one is a regular hi-hat with a pedal stand so it's open when he plays double bass, the right one a remote one without a pedal and it is tight closed.
    If you want to use just one hi hat - you can use a switch lever on top of your main one which is operated by hand - where you can switch it from open to closed.

    When using double bass drums, there is usually either a clutch that will release the top hi hat which will reengage when the pedal is pressed, or a remote hi hat that is always closed. 🤘

  • @MichaelDionneDrummer
    @MichaelDionneDrummer ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey there Justin! When playing double kick drums or a double pedal, your left foot (for a right-handed player, obviously) goes back and forth between the hi-hat pedal and the left kick pedal. When playing the left kick pedal, the hi-hat simply stays open, unless you use a device called a drop clutch. A drop clutch is a hi-hat clutch that has a lever that, when pulled, lets the top hi-hat cymbal drop on the bottom one, allowing you to play your hi-hat closed while playing double kicks. Once you press on the hi-hat pedal again, the clutch grabs the top cymbal back!

      Yes! Some people have this idea that musicians (at least ones not in symphonies) are dumb. Of course theirs different areas of our personalities/choices might not be the sharpest all the time. But musicians are no dummies. The more I learn the more in awe I’m in learning about what’s involved playing guitar, drums, bass and it’s so interesting and I just love it!
