@@jornthree8881 Indeed, the first games in the series back in the 1980s were licenses of the popular cyberpunk/dark fantasy novel "Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei", written by the novelist Aya Nishitani. Atlus' seminal 1987 Famicom JRPG isn't even the first game to be based on the book, as the MSX Gauntlet-clone by Telenet (also called Megami Tensei) would precede Atlus' game by a couple of months, having come out in July 1987.
I worked as the 3d programmer for this game. Thanks for reviewing it. Yoko Shimomura, the music composer is most famous for her works on pretty much all the Street Fighter 2 sound tracks. I actually put an easter egg in the game where you can pet the police German shepherd, if you wait for a few minutes. But later found out it was discovered and removed from the game.
Most people rather know her for doing the Kingdom Hearts soundtracks, plus Xenoblade and FF15. Never even heard of her having done tracks for fighting games.

@ph34r inovade My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

Parasite Eve came out in '98. I.e. the same year as M G.S! Many well known video game mags could not decide who deserved "game of the year!" Between these two titles! Let that sink in!!!!
The author declared it non-canon because he's a jaded old fart that hates video games, but also has no intention of writing more books, so it might as well be canon.
I bought the psp game just to get Lightning’s outfit for Dissidia. But then I ended up buying the PS1 one cause I liked the psp game so much (i heard ppl hated it but idk as a 14yo i loved it i thot the gameplay was so different to anything else i liked it). And then I ended up loving the original game for different reasons than the psp game. It’s kind of an obscure franchise now but it has a warm place in my heart. Mitochondria man.
I'd respect Square more if they did a proper Remaster for once, though. You know... hiring a team to redraw the excellent backdrops in HD instead of having nice models on a confusing mess of pixels.
Wow... I remember I bought parasite eve just to play the xenogears demo. Don't know what drew me to it so much but it turned out to be one of the greatest stories I ever experienced when I got the full game.
I don't know if this counts for your "official sequel being in a different medium" question, but the official sequel to "Fight Club" written by the same author, is a graphic novel.
@@arlosteiner8382 I mean, Kingdom Hearts, The World Ends With You, Resonance of Fate, Nier, and Nier Automata all post-date Final Fantasy 10. Also, Dragon Quest Builders is a pretty weird idea too, I guess.
@@lnsflare1 Resonance of Fate was developed by tri-ace and published by Sega. Has nothing to do with Square-Enix at all. And the Drakengard / Nier series was never developed by them directly either. Yoko Taro and his crew always worked in a smaller studio called cavia until it shut down shortly after NieR 1 was released. I forgot what the studio they used for D3 was called, but for Automata it was basically all Platinum Games and him. Square was barely involved in any of his projects besides some funding, that's about it.
Austin the survival horror rpg was done on ps1 another time... Koudelka which is actually canonically a prequel to the Shadow Hearts games its worth checking out.
Aya Brea was my favorite design by Nomura since PE1. I like how she evolved visually as the games progressed. When I saw Nomine I thought her design was taken from Aya's original PE1 look.

first ever PS1 shmup i ever got my hands on was Einhander. and still love it to this day. im kinda sad that that, along with parasite eve 2 didnt get popular enough to see the time of day much longer.
Multi-media franchises are kinda weird. For quite a while, I got attached to the Dot Hack franchise, which is almost one continuous story told over the course of: some prequel manga, the .Hack//SIGN anime, the .Hack//Infection, Outbreak, Mutation, and Quarantine games on the PS2, the .Hack//Legend of the Twilight manga (and anime, but the anime splits off into original territory halfway through), the .Hack//Roots anime that acts as a prequel to the .Hack//G.U. games, some light novels, some more manga, the .Hack//Quantum OVA... and I don't know where the series has gone from there.
DRCEQ there’s an extra 5ish hour game on the G.U remaster collection that didn’t exist before that. Other than that I think you’ve got it covered, lol.
Man, the thing that Square did right back then, be It ff6, 7, especially parasite eve, was the atmosphere. That scene where you walk slowly to the stage with no soundtrack, just your footsteps, or when walking the underground, that was the scary part back then. The tension.
I have never played Parasite Eve but I would so love to see a modern take on the series! Seems like a cool chance for some body horror survival action, with the right handling, of course.
I actually really enjoyed the 3rd Birthday - it was the first psp game I completed, I'm from the UK myself and I wasn't aware P.E supposedly wasn't realeased here, I was somehow aware of it in the late 90s but never played it - so I'm wondering if it showed up in gaming magazines here or as was the case then ... If it was on a list of games a guy selling copies had, hard to remember considering I was a kid then. I have been wanting to play the 1st game for a while so good to know it holds up.
Parasite Eve was an interesting game for me. I wasn't scared of the monsters but the science of mitochondria itself. Since it was referencing real studies on Mitochondria and spontaneous combustion it actually creep'd me out a bit. The very idea that you could burst into flames without warning was a scary thought, I had a very young and naive mind so I soaked a lot of that stuff in. Also the part where the Green thingy chased you gave me nightmares. It was something about that with the music and the helplessness that really got me, since the whole game I was super powerful being with guns and all of a sudden I was helpless. It was a nice change of pace I wish happened more often in the game.
It's...okay. As far as the ex game stuff goes don't bother with it. Just playing through the regular game once is really all there is to it. So about a ten hour game depending.
Not in the ninties... but Nightmare Before Christmas got a video game sequel made by Capcom in the early 2000s. And, yes, it's pretty much Devil May Cry lite. It's kinda fun, actually.
I am so hooked on this channel why haven't I been subscribed?? This is one of the few channels ever that I can watch the same videos over and over love your work Austin!
I felt the main story ending interpreted that no matter what we did, Aya still had Eve's cells and eventually she'd lose control of herself and begin the cycle anew. In a different way; the ending clues that Aya doesn't just take a destructive route but rather a more populace move. Where she controls all the mitochondria in every human nearby. Leading with no resistance.
I tried to play this a year ago for the first time. Had to consult a guide early on and realized all the items I was missing because of how stupidly precise your positioning must be for the interact button to work, on places where there's not even an indication that an item might be there. That is not something that can be excused by age.
I played this game back in the day. I didn’t have much money so I didn’t have a lot of PlayStation games and mostly bought rpgs since they were long, but ended up getting this as one of the first 5 games or so I bought. It really was amazing back then, it might not seem it now but at the time it was really crazy how good the storytelling was, and although it was short it became one of my favorite games.
The C64 game Below the Root is based on the Green Sky trilogy of books. It's considered canon to the series by the author herself, and undoes a character death the author came to regret in her books.
@@Underratedcomedi I though about it and then decided to change to Pokemon. Because basically the main protagonist travell through different places, collect warriors, send to Valhalla and defeat the Big Bad to prevent destroy the world.
This is my favorite series of all time. Its sad that 3rd birthday is so bad. We need a remake of the first game or a proper 3rd game. So happy you mentioned the movies, the books, and even the Manga!! you really done your research here!
16:00 - 2x rate of fire does 60% per shot so you are doing more damage. 3x is 42% per shot 5x is 25% per shot. I don’t know 7x of the top of my head, but 10x is 13% per shot. 10x does the most damage at 130% but takes a long time to fire. 3x is the most efficient at 126% for the time it takes to shoot, but 2x is the best later on when you get double or triple command, unless you are using a rifle, shotgun, or grenade launcher. Those fire much slower and are best without 2x once you get double command.
16:33 - the first encounter on a screen is guaranteed. After that there is a percent chance of getting into more. You can get into an unlimited number of fights anyway as long as you phase in and out of a screen while checking the screens trigger area for the battle.
Well, speaking of weird sequels, Blair Witch Volume 1: Rustin Parr is a sequel to the PC game Nocturne (at least set in the same world 😊). So yeah, movie game that's also a sequel to an unrelated game. Let that weirdness stew for a bit ☺
nowhere near enough people talk about this game or its sequel (which i happen to prefer more).... we don't talk about the third one, though. what? what third one? i have no idea what you're talking about. anyways, thanks for covering this. it's a series near and dear to my heart.
I'm glad you covered this hidden gem. Not many people heard of it. If anyone wants to play this I suggest buying it from Ebay or a local obscure game store.
One of my favorite games of all time... I put a few Easter Eggs tied to it in my survival horror game Survive Into Night - Still play through every few years.
The battle and weapons system are evolved in Vagrant Story, which is another great Squaresoft game that I highly recommend if you haven’t already played it. Also the movie-game canonical tie-in I always think of are the Matrix ones, where the games were developed to be part of the overall movie experience iirc.
Another book having a game sequel that I know of was Blackstone Chronicles. Book by John Saul, and the game had the same title, but does take place afterwards. Was on PC and was a point and click/puzzle/horror game. Not too bad, and I think came out in the 90's as well :3
I'd say while beatable, I also find the final boss in the Chrysler building is rather annoying. Mostly thanks to the leveling process and... Just her dumb healing ability if anything... Which can heal up to 10,000 damage which is just annoying unless you can out damage it. Also, the Chrysler building doesn't apparently reset if you start going up it a little bit, and then decide to beat the original final boss ( Eve + Ultimate Being ). Which sucks...
Parasite Eve 2 fixed that lack of tank controls thing, and even threw it a part where you have to run around a big square shaped area where you have to split second dodge body checking enemies on a time limit.
So Parasite Eve is like Shin Megami Tensei, a license of a novel that outgrew its source material.

It was resident evil, the rpg, New York addition. Plus knuckles. On Christmas. And this description still makes more sense then the plot.
Featuring Dante of the Devil May Cry series.
i'm a simple man, i see austin eruption, i click watch and like.
Your explanation of the mitocôndria and the star Wars t-shirt make me have a Midiclorian PTSD here
The Power of Mitochondria is nothing compared to the Power of -The Force- Midiochlorians.
1:30 the Witcher games are a sequel to the books as well.
not exactly canonical tho, the author of the book kinda gave permission but didn’t take game seriously (until it went massively popular)
ahem hem Metro
The author declared it non-canon because he's a jaded old fart that hates video games, but also has no intention of writing more books, so it might as well be canon.
@@Venom_IX jaded old fart or not (he is), he's still the author
@@vichvs So, what's your point? J.K. Rowling is still the author of Harry Potter, but she's doing more damage than good to it lately.
A Parasite Eve remake sure would be nice
I'd respect Square more if they did a proper Remaster for once, though. You know... hiring a team to redraw the excellent backdrops in HD instead of having nice models on a confusing mess of pixels.
The ending battle scared the piss out of me lol damn crawling pus ball coming after me
I still remember the demo disc trailer for PE. Blew my dang mind as a preteen. I became obsessed immediately
> Sweet Home
> Terrible
OKAY WAIT
you stole my comment lol
...maybe you would cover Vagrant Story?
That's a good idea Vagrant Story was also one of my favorites in PS1 era.
Weird how pre FF10 Squaresoft was really willing to go out there
@@arlosteiner8382 I mean, Kingdom Hearts, The World Ends With You, Resonance of Fate, Nier, and Nier Automata all post-date Final Fantasy 10. Also, Dragon Quest Builders is a pretty weird idea too, I guess.
lnsflare1 I can flex with Nier but anyone playing Kingdom Hearts over the age of 14 needs to examine their life
@@lnsflare1 Resonance of Fate was developed by tri-ace and published by Sega.
Mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. In case you didn't know.
Austin the survival horror rpg was done on ps1 another time... Koudelka which is actually canonically a prequel to the Shadow Hearts games its worth checking out.
omegaweaponredux kodelka was awesome, and shadow hearts 1&2 were fucking amazing. I wish we could get a remaster at the least.
@@KloudyWoolf yes or atleast a actually game on steam and new consoles
glad you've finally experienced this gem, i say as someone who only just experienced it like last year
This video really heats up my mitochondria.
Thanks for showing that Nomura art me and my gf were like ‘oh hm indeed’ and now we’re even more gay
Aya Brea was my favorite design by Nomura since PE1. I like how she evolved visually as the games progressed. When I saw Nomine I thought her design was taken from Aya's original PE1 look.
Cant' wait till you cover Parasite Eve 2. The first and second were my favs.
You know you could use the bp for upgrading the weapons, right?
i didnt figure that out til i was near the end of the game. then i had a ton of points racked up to add like +20 attack to my rifle.
@@Jack_80 i save all my BP for the weapons, replaying over and over, until I get max BP, and you get more BP in subsequent runs, from beating the chapters, and especially even more for not saving whatsoever, I hate that you can't refight the super bosses in the Chrysler building
SilverFatalis 5653 You do NOT get more BP for not saving. This is 100% false. I don’t know where this absurd theory came from.
first ever PS1 shmup i ever got my hands on was Einhander. and still love it to this day.
im kinda sad that that, along with parasite eve 2 didnt get popular enough to see the time of day much longer.
This game has some of the best music ever. The police station theme is amazing.
Devon K nah FF7 soundtrack is much better lol
Thank you for making this video! I watched it and thought Parasite Eve looked cool ,so I bought it! It is now one of my favorite games!!
I have never played Parasite Eve but I would so love to see a modern take on the series! Seems like a cool chance for some body horror survival action, with the right handling, of course.
I've never played but I adore all of the FMVs in this, they're so rad
I actually really enjoyed the 3rd Birthday - it was the first psp game I completed, I'm from the UK myself and I wasn't aware P.E supposedly wasn't realeased here, I was somehow aware of it in the late 90s but never played it - so I'm wondering if it showed up in gaming magazines here or as was the case then ... If it was on a list of games a guy selling copies had, hard to remember considering I was a kid then. I have been wanting to play the 1st game for a while so good to know it holds up.
For me it was on the back of the FF8 booklet along with Vagrant Story
I have never heard of Parasite Eve, the name makes it sounds like a horror game, this should be good! 😄😁👍
This game is my favorite Square Enix game (outside of KH2 final mix).
I am so hooked on this channel why haven't I been subscribed?? This is one of the few channels ever that I can watch the same videos over and over love your work Austin!
Omg I feel old, I remember playing this with my best friend in elementary school and seeing those cut scenes and be blown away
The baby still creeps me out to this day.
The C64 game Below the Root is based on the Green Sky trilogy of books. It's considered canon to the series by the author herself, and undoes a character death the author came to regret in her books.
Just like Valkyrie Profile was basically Square's Pokemon.
Maria Paz G. Lesme how so?
@@Underratedcomedi I though about it and then decided to change to Pokemon. Because basically the main protagonist travell through different places, collect warriors, send to Valhalla and defeat the Big Bad to prevent destroy the world.
Wasn't Valkyrie Profile an Enix IP in those days?
@@Erk1234567 Yes, developed by Tri-Ace, published by Enix
This is my favorite series of all time. Its sad that 3rd birthday is so bad.
We need a remake of the first game or a proper 3rd game.
So happy you mentioned the movies, the books, and even the Manga!! you really done your research here!
I’ve never been able to fully get through this game but I’m always so drawn into the creepy, dark and broody world.
9:00 - OMG NO!! Bonus points can also be spent on upgrading your equipment’s stats, and should all be put into you gun’s attack stat.
My brother and I have the original Cds and full game guide with the Chrysler Building maps :)
One of my favorite games of all time... I put a few Easter Eggs tied to it in my survival horror game Survive Into Night - Still play through every few years.
This and Galerians were two of the weirder entries to my childhood PS1 collection.
Megami Tensei II is a actual sequence for the manga/anime Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei.
The battle and weapons system are evolved in Vagrant Story, which is another great Squaresoft game that I highly recommend if you haven’t already played it. Also the movie-game canonical tie-in I always think of are the Matrix ones, where the games were developed to be part of the overall movie experience iirc.
I really recall that opera scene at the start of the game. Brings back old-school gaming memories X-D
Another book having a game sequel that I know of was Blackstone Chronicles. Book by John Saul, and the game had the same title, but does take place afterwards. Was on PC and was a point and click/puzzle/horror game. Not too bad, and I think came out in the 90's as well :3
Thank you for covering this!
6:19 idk why i remember this scene so vividly and now i finally know where its from! i played this when i was super little!
No, people like 3rd birthday. People just don't think it should be a parasite eve game
Even Third Birthday didn't think it should be a parasite eve game.
Parasite Eve 2 fixed that lack of tank controls thing, and even threw it a part where you have to run around a big square shaped area where you have to split second dodge body checking enemies on a time limit.
Years after playing the game, the battle theme is still stuck in my head.
