He actually made a 37-min, significantly upgraded (I guess?) follow-up episode on many more of the forgotten and weird PS1 games seven years later in mid-February 2023. th-cam.com/video/iNplYp2Q024/w-d-xo.html
i played the japanese version of zan several years ago. and to my surprise, mr dbz singer himself (hirobu kageyama) performed the opening credits title 'zan the zan(kanji)'. enemy blood was green in contrast of red in NA version.
"Oh man, this makes me want to play some Playstation games!" (Goemon music plays during Rising Zan segment) "Oh man, this makes me want to play some Goemon!"
Speaking of Samurai games set in the Wild West, have you played Samurai Western on the PS2? It is a fun, action-based platformer where you play as a samurai in the Wild West, surprisingly.
0:28 I had this game! My brother used to make fun of me just for the fact that I owned that game. We called that game "Corrida a Pé" ("On Foot Racing", or something like that).
+Lynn Gercone why are you being so negative to everyone just commenting plausible questions and trying to be nice? In another thread you told someone to get a hobby on a Sunday afternoon, you should take your own advice instead of being mean for no reason over the Internet :/
1:14 Ish Klonoa music here (Strangely, it kind of fits with the Phix gameplay. Speaking of Klonoa, the opening of Phix though, it's kind of similar to Klonoa: Door to Phantomile's, come to think of it, especially the butterfly part, and a bit of the "object falling from the sky" part.) Great work on the video! I thought you were gone. :c
First person I see talking about Shovel Power...I couldn't be happier!! I thought I was the only one that loved that weird little game as a kid! (I never got to play the multiplayer mode, sadly...)
The setting and general lore of _Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman_ gives me some serious _Red Steel 2_ vibes, and that makes me wonder if Zan was sort of an inspiration for RS2's narrative.
3:23 Austin, you forgot to mention the BEST thing about Phix. it’s a collect-a-thon where the collectables are literally golden pixels of energy. They’re so tiny. (I found that out when Rerez completed the game 100%).
Pretty sure this is the first channel I've ever seen that actually mentions Dragon Valor, lol ..love that game ..not the best but it's still pretty solid overall
Dragon Valor...man Now that is a definite trip down memory lane. One of the first few games I’ve ever played on the PS1. Along side the greats like Brave Fencer Musashi and Syphon Filter 2. Sure it was clunky as heck, but man did it blow my 9 Year old mind with its 90s edginess.
What game was at 0:30 :o ? Terrific video by the way, i've been collecting actively for the PS1 for five or so years now and i had never even heard of Power Shovel.
Any chance of you ever doing a video on the weirdest Saturn games? If you ever got to import a Sega Saturn from the land of the Rising Sun, you'd be in for a hell of a library of weird/quirky games. To name a few, there's: Fighters Megamix, Keio Flying Squadron 2, every Parodius game on the Saturn, PuLiRuLa (also on PS1), Super Tempo, and my personal favourite- Tama! Tama's a bit like a precursor to Marbles! Balance Challenge on the Wii.
Every time I come across one of these "weird/unknown PS1 games" videos I ask myself if this one's gonna be different from the others and have SwagMan in it... they never do.
Loved the vid and your style man. You got me subbed :) Suggestions for the inevtiable follow up vid *rummages in 200+ PS1 collection (don't judge me)* Hard Edge (Resident Evil + Die Hard 1 + Anime) Spider (Platformer where you're a murdered scientist who downloaded his brain into a cyborg tarantula and now seeks revenge) Skullmonkeys (Claymation, yes claymation, platformer made by Doug Tennaple of Earthworm Jim fame) Swagman (... I have no words) Machine Hunter (Loaded-style shooter where you change weapons by taking over your defeated enemies bodies) Team Buddies (Worms + Tic-Tacs + Tourettes syndrome + heavy artillery) Bishi Bashi Special (Needs no introduction) Poy Poy (Violent Japanese gameshow, nuff' said) Hogs Of War (Worms if they were WW1 pigs all voiced by Rick Mayall) Kurushi (Surreal puzzler) Primal Rage (Mortal Kombat if done with dinosaurs) Ballerburg (tower defense with some of the funniest VO work of the 90's) Biofreaks (The title says it all) Jumping Flash (Happy diabetes in a can) Vib Ribbon (see Caddicarus for more details)
Damn it Austin. I was about to buy Power Shovel on Amazon for $15 plus shipping and some one bought it right before I added it to my cart. Now the only other options on Amazon are $80 or $100! lol
Great video boku, always cool to see more weird ps1 games. Also gibberish languages partly based on real languages are super weird. Like in chulip for ps2. Would be cool to see that in a video lol.
your mention of rising zan just reminded me of samurai western a game by the makers of way of the samurai or shinobido... only instead of featuring an american in japan being a samurai they have a samurai in america... being a samurai.
As a PS1 lover, discovering these gems made my day. Thanks, sir, thanks very much. Also, here in Europe, Power Shovel is called Power DiggerZ. With a Z. Because it'z cool, I guess. Like Rising Zan. Zan has a Z. IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.
On the subject of agetec, they published a lot of weird shit for the PlayStation in the 90s. You should check out Battle Hunter or Extreme Go-Kart Racing, Austin- the former is a bizarre hybrid of RPG, sim game and board game, while the latter is basically Mario Kart with all the fun sucked out of it. Basically, fun times to be had by all except not really.
dat Dark Cloud music. If you havent already can you make a video about or involving the Dark Cloud series? Or at least just the first one. Fucking love that game.
There are so many weird games on PS1... this could be a whole series. I've seen Power Shovel around and debated on picking it up. I'm sold.
He actually made a 37-min, significantly upgraded (I guess?) follow-up episode on many more of the forgotten and weird PS1 games seven years later in mid-February 2023.

How did the excavation game manage to be better than the samurai cowboy one?
+Tanos Gk This keeps me up at night.
- Austin
To be honest, I really did find Dragon Valor to be a pretty solid game.
I wouldn't call the shop useless... just convoluted.
Someone needs to trap Phix inside a Pokemon ball and never let him loose again.
i played the japanese version of zan several years ago. and to my surprise, mr dbz singer himself (hirobu kageyama) performed the opening credits title 'zan the zan(kanji)'. enemy blood was green in contrast of red in NA version.
Someone JUST recently told me about burning PS1 discs, so I've been looking for interesting games to play. This video came at the perfect time.
dont judge me
I am judging the shit out of you
I'm sorry man.... I got to...
you are: a pretty chill dude with good music and a niche view on gaming.... you ARE Atlus

1:14 KLONOA OST, finally some else in texas knows about klonoa. So this is what it feels like when doves cry.
🙄 ...that song was about break-ups, anger, arguments & heartbreak 🤨 not accidental happiness found in sad situations 😑 *gawd* 😏
I miss him so much!!! T-T

To this day people are still waiting for rising zan to return
I love the short, yet subtle, inclusion of the theme song of the Home Village in Dark Cloud. Niceeee.
yay Eruption is back! I swear, I rewatched the Smash Bros clones episodes like 10 times while I was waiting for a new video :D
yeah yeah we all did
"The golden age of Final Fantasy"
One of the things you should NEVER say on the internet no matter what final fantasy game you are referring to
your excitement for the digging game brought me great joy ♡
Happy to hear it!
Eruption you got me at the St Anger part. Love your videos, they're getting better each time!
+Icemaire I'm not joking st anger is the best album ever created.
Okay maybe not.
- Austin
Rising Zan's theme is incredibly catchy. I want to see Platinum Games make Rising Zan 2 : Samurai Cyborg Gunman Revengeance.
"Oh man, this makes me want to play some Playstation games!"
(Goemon music plays during Rising Zan segment)
"Oh man, this makes me want to play some Goemon!"
Speaking of Samurai games set in the Wild West, have you played Samurai Western on the PS2? It is a fun, action-based platformer where you play as a samurai in the Wild West, surprisingly.
Remember when Two Best Friends played Samurai Gunman for a Mystery Box.
My boner is still recovering from it. Thats how hard it made me.
Who can forget a name like Samurai Gunman? Hype boners be poppin' every time its name is heard.
remember when the Best Friends started out Saturday Morning Scrublords with Power Shovel vs?
who could forget that hype shit
+flyingtoast27 did woolz really label that a scrublords? I recall them loving it
0:28 I had this game! My brother used to make fun of me just for the fact that I owned that game. We called that game "Corrida a Pé" ("On Foot Racing", or something like that).
You're great man. You deserve more subscribers! Liked.
+Lynn Gercone why are you being so negative to everyone just commenting plausible questions and trying to be nice? In another thread you told someone to get a hobby on a Sunday afternoon, you should take your own advice instead of being mean for no reason over the Internet :/
I fucking LOVE how you used Sunset Riders music for the Samurai Cowboy thingy!! ❤
“Creatures”
just gunna leave this here your welcome lol
1:14 Ish Klonoa music here (Strangely, it kind of fits with the Phix gameplay. Speaking of Klonoa, the opening of Phix though, it's kind of similar to Klonoa: Door to Phantomile's, come to think of it, especially the butterfly part, and a bit of the "object falling from the sky" part.)
Great work on the video! I thought you were gone. :c
Agetec: The founders of FromSoftware games before Demon Souls.
First person I see talking about Shovel Power...I couldn't be happier!! I thought I was the only one that loved that weird little game as a kid! (I never got to play the multiplayer mode, sadly...)
I loved Rising Zan, and I loved the gibberish everybody spoke.
On a binge watch of all your videos they're so good. Please keep making more this channel deserves more subs!
Is it me or is he pronouncing the letter "S" at a decibel that's reverberating my eardrums?!
The setting and general lore of _Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman_ gives me some serious _Red Steel 2_ vibes, and that makes me wonder if Zan was sort of an inspiration for RS2's narrative.
It's an excavator, not a crane..... Very different.
Dude Dragon Valor is straight up amazing. Awesome folk/powermetal soundtrack, good combat, original vibes and just super memorable and non linear.
Quackshot music in the background during the Phix review. Very nostalgic music for me.
That dragon from the opening cutscene of Dragon Valor uses roars taken from King Ghidorah & Rodan of the Godzilla movies, holy shit XD
You should look at Mobile Light Force. The cover is very deceiving. Looks like Charlie's Angels, nope GunBird.
3:23 Austin, you forgot to mention the BEST thing about Phix. it’s a collect-a-thon where the collectables are literally golden pixels of energy. They’re so tiny. (I found that out when Rerez completed the game 100%).
0:50 Suikoden Overworld BGM
That’s all I’m here for.
YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAW. That Samurai Zan game looks fun
the pace of this video is outstandingly good
great job
OMG! You mentioned Rising Zam! Best obscure PS1 game ever!
POWER SHOVEL YES THATS MY FUCKING JAM DUDE. Pow right in the childhood.
I've been subscribed to this channel for a while, but never watched a video on it until now. It was pretty good. :D
+Matt Rowser Glad you dug it!
- Austin
Quite possibly the weirdest PS1 game of them all: Incredible Crisis
There is a game weirder than Incredible Crisis: King Of Crusher
That sneaky quackshot music playing at 2:40
Pretty sure this is the first channel I've ever seen that actually mentions Dragon Valor, lol ..love that game ..not the best but it's still pretty solid overall
rising zan looks like a fun time despite its flaws
It's worth playing once just because it's Rising Zan. Samurai Gunman.
When you think about it, Rising Zan could be considered the first character action game.
'The concept is simple, you are a crane... do things.' - Game Man
Dragon Valor...man Now that is a definite trip down memory lane. One of the first few games I’ve ever played on the PS1. Along side the greats like Brave Fencer Musashi and Syphon Filter 2. Sure it was clunky as heck, but man did it blow my 9 Year old mind with its 90s edginess.
I haven't been watching your videos for very long but I really really like them. Thank you
What game was at 0:30 :o ? Terrific video by the way, i've been collecting actively for the PS1 for five or so years now and i had never even heard of Power Shovel.
Running Wild. If you like the genre I will suggest Micro Maniacs and S.C.A.R.S.
Two words, "Time Commando". play that and your life will never be the same
Wow. I completely forgot about Rising Zan; the last time that game got talked about was on an episode of X-Play.
Any chance of you ever doing a video on the weirdest Saturn games? If you ever got to import a Sega Saturn from the land of the Rising Sun, you'd be in for a hell of a library of weird/quirky games. Aw hell yeah nice Super Action Statue, Austin.
Every time I come across one of these "weird/unknown PS1 games" videos I ask myself if this one's gonna be different from the others and have SwagMan in it... they never do.
I dig that persona soundtrack in the background
ahhh i immediately caught the Dark Cloud music. its my favorite game of all time
Loved the vid and your style man. You got me subbed :)
Suggestions for the inevtiable follow up vid *rummages in 200+ PS1 collection (don't judge me)*
Hard Edge (Resident Evil + Die Hard 1 + Anime)

Bishi Bashi Special (Needs no introduction)
Poy Poy (Violent Japanese gameshow, nuff' said)
Hogs Of War (Worms if they were WW1 pigs all voiced by Rick Mayall)
Kurushi (Surreal puzzler)
Primal Rage (Mortal Kombat if done with dinosaurs)
Ballerburg (tower defense with some of the funniest VO work of the 90's)
Biofreaks (The title says it all)
Jumping Flash (Happy diabetes in a can)
Vib Ribbon (see Caddicarus for more details)
i like how you used the Breezegale music from Klonoa right there.... tbh phix and Klonoa arent too different aesthetically
There are some truly messed-up games for this system, which is one of the reasons I love it.
I was fully expecting to see Incredible Crisis on this list. And I want to play Power Shovel so much right now.
Damn it Austin. I was about to buy Power Shovel on Amazon for $15 plus shipping and some one bought it right before I added it to my cart. Now the only other options on Amazon are $80 or $100! lol
If you want to truly see a weird ps1 game, Tale of the Sun is where it is at. A bizarre caveman survival game in a giant open world
I'm still sad about the fact that you didn't showcased the glory, the magic, the majesty of Zan's whooooOOOOOOAAAAA HUSTLE TIME!
that samurai gunman game kind of reminds me of "Red Steel 2" for the wii (with the cross between japan and the old west and all that)
This channel is awesome and should have like a million subs
Great video boku, always cool to see more weird ps1 games. Also gibberish languages partly based on real languages are super weird. Like in chulip for ps2. Would be cool to see that in a video lol.
That irl dodgeball bit was fucking amazing.
Samurai Gunman? Now that's something only a Texan like myself can really appreciate. Yee haw!
Erupting Boku: Just a gunman! Austin no more!
There actually is a sort-of samurai gunman game in the form of Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin on PS3/PS4. It was never released outside of Japan though.
your mention of rising zan just reminded me of samurai western
a game by the makers of way of the samurai or shinobido... only instead of featuring an american in japan being a samurai
they have a samurai in america... being a samurai.
Power Shovel seems like the best thing I've never heard of. Like those Densha De Go games it also has an awesome controller. Shame it's so expensive.
Samurai Gunman is one of the few titles I actually played on The PS1
As a PS1 lover, discovering these gems made my day.
Thanks, sir, thanks very much.
Also, here in Europe, Power Shovel is called Power DiggerZ. With a Z.
Because it'z cool, I guess.
Like Rising Zan.
Zan has a Z.
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.
Lol I actually used to enjoy Power Shovel a lot as a kid back then. Hell, I actually have forgotten about the game until now.
whats that song playing over the end card, it sounded familiar from like E.V.O. or something. its in my head but i can't place it 14:42
11:13 Channel that inner Yoshimitsu! Naamuuuuu.
Samurai Gunman sounds like something out of an Ace Attorney game.
YAY someone else likes that dodgeball game!! I used to have it and it's pretty damn fun. Especially for a budget title!
Dude, I need to find this Power Shovel game, this looks incredible
Dragon Valor actually looked pretty cool - I'll check it out
On the subject of agetec, they published a lot of weird shit for the PlayStation in the 90s. You should check out Battle Hunter or Extreme Go-Kart Racing, Austin- the former is a bizarre hybrid of RPG, sim game and board game, while the latter is basically Mario Kart with all the fun sucked out of it.
Basically, fun times to be had by all except not really.
right after the Dodge ball game I got an ad using dodge all to represent nasal allergies.
Dragon Valor slaps, every time someone mentions Dragon's Dogma I always think they're talking about this game by mistake
Well some of the games looked interesting but it definitely hit the Weird right on target.
Dragon Valor was awesome. Sadly no one really seems to remember it.
I wish you made more videos, I love your channel!
clearly SOMEONE isnt a gunman!!! keep your finger off that trigger, eruption, unless you plan to fire behind your back like a lunatic!
I want that Shovel game so bad right now...... also Senran Kagura. Hell to the yes.
Were was Bishi Bashi Special?
!!!!! I love all star slamming d-ball! I never expected to hear about this crazy shit again!! so good!!!!
That Persona 3 music is burned into my skull.
Y'all better have No One Can Stop Mr. Domino! in this list!
Remember Micro Maniacs? That shit was weird.
I hear Trails of Cold Steel music! During the Rising Zan part.
What game is that at 0:35 ?
1:14 I hear my Klonoa Door to Phantomile soundtrack!
'As a fucking meteor comes down from the sky!' - Game Man
dat Dark Cloud music. If you havent already can you make a video about or involving the Dark Cloud series? Or at least just the first one.
Fucking love that game.
Wild 9 was a weird ass game I played on PS1
