      I just beat it for the 1st time a few months ago and yes it's a classic game, still really great and fun. Ppl are idiots for saying the first game in a great series all of a sudden isn't good anymore, just because the sequels (namely 3 in this case) did what they're supposed to do...improve the formula. Very unfair judgment.

      You are not wrong. DMC1 has aged pretty well for a game that basically invented how to do hack and slash action in 3D. You should watch Matthewmatosis' lengthy video if you want to get a greater appreciation for how the mechanics of that game mesh together. Hideki Kamiya and his team got an incredible amount of things right on that first try.
      One thing they didn't get right however was the camera. Combine the wonky camera with high difficulty and it might lead some frustrated gamers to conclude that DMC1 aged poorly overall.

    • @AceKuper
      @AceKuper 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think DMC1 is closer to Resident Evil with a sword, than a pure character action game. So if you go in expecting cool action and multiple different combos you are going to be disappointing.

    • @pipyakas
      @pipyakas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      every DMC1's badly aged aspect is almost the same as Resident Evil 1 - mainly cringy dialog and bad camera control. The combat held up pretty well although the pace that you acquire new moves is a little slow, but that's true for all the sequels as well (except for DmC, on normal it's ridiculously easy that you can earn enough points to unlock necessary moves)

      Its more of a question of whether its worth dumping resources into redoing an old game over using that investment to male new games with new ideas.
      Like would you rather DMC1 be remade just to make it a game competent by today's standards or would you prefer that the resources be used to make DMC5?

    • @amirgarcia547
      @amirgarcia547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      thepokefan891 I agree quite honestly. You can make a not-so-good game much better by today’s standards. Just look at Fire Emblem Gaiden compared to its remake, Fire Emblem Echoes. Or Metroid 2: Return of Samus compared to its remake, Metroid: Samus Returns.

    • @SeanBarkerNegaScott128
      @SeanBarkerNegaScott128 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I think he's using "remake" to refer to "remaster," which I honestly can't criticize him too much over because those two terms have become so overused and misused that they can in some cases be used to mean the same thing.
      For me, a remake would be something along the lines of the RE2 remake, which completely overhauls the gameplay and visuals to a modern standard. A remaster keeps the same basic gameplay but updates the visuals to some degree, whether that's just a resolution boost or a total overhaul like SOTC and Crash got. I'm fine with either approach as long as the final product is good and maintains the spirit of the original if not the visuals or moment-to-moment gameplay.

    • @zachanikwano
      @zachanikwano 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      thepokefan891
      Then you have EA, remaking the well-aged Battlefront series but putting in less gameplay, that's also poorly designed, and pay-to-win features.
      Honestly why didn't they just remake the original games in their entirity, with upgraded graphics and NO gambling features? Easy money there.

    • @SeanBarkerNegaScott128
      @SeanBarkerNegaScott128 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      zachanikwano - The new Battlefront games are more of a reboot than any remake or remaster of the old games. They're so far removed from the original design (even the genre has changed from TPS to FPS) that it's kinda disingenuous to say they're connected outside of the name.

    I hate to be that guy, I really do, but it's really odd (and a bit hypocritical) to hear someone who I know really likes JRPGs say he can't get into Collectathon platformers because "they are artificial time-wasters that sacrifice interesting gameplay or story moments in favor of numbers"
    I'm sure you have a better explanation for that and you just didn't want to get into much detail in this video because it has nothing to do with that, I just thought it was kind of a weird tangent. I'm sure you have legit and more detailed reasons for not being into Collectathons. And even if you don't, just not being into a certain genre of games is a-ok. It happens.

    • @austineruption
      @austineruption  6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I deff think I sounded a bit harsher than intended there. But it's more so something like a JRPG usually has a narrative that keeps you going where as something like Donkey Kong 64 is just... you know.

    • @ObsidiusFan
      @ObsidiusFan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I noticed you had a problem with DK64 especially. And I kinda agree with you. That game had way too many collectibles for a regular collectathon. Especially because of the multiple playable characters. It's overwhelming and not as fun to complete as other collectathons.

    • @VengefulNonsense
      @VengefulNonsense 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Are you implying that there's something inherent to JRPGs that makes them time wasters that lack interesting gameplay and stories? The only thing that links his opinions on collectathons to JRPGs is that they both have numbers. JRPGs have numbers as a necessary element to increase the player character's performance in combat or diplomacy or whatever, it's for meaningful and uselfull progression. Collectathons just have numbers to incentivize players to go grab more of a useless item that doesn't do anything but go towards your completion percentage.

      A lot of plot twists like angelo being dantes brother who is never mentioned in any great detail until the reveal make ot seem like you didnt catch the plot when it was happening. Dante just goes "that was my brother" and the first time player can only go "ok? Who?"
      Likewise "i could have been the one to fill your dark soul with LIIIIIIIIGHT" comes off as extremely awkward not just from poor axting but because they take it completely seriously like the player is supposed to empathize with dante being sad overthis romantic interest he barely spoke to.
      Altogether the story can feel like 2 or 3 cutscenes establishing things like dantes brother or developing dante and trish's relationship didnt make it i to the game.
      Like the core story is simple but the beats in it make it feel more complicated than it is

    • @Galeforce017

      Flaming Fighter I guess you could experience it like that, but I didn't.
      I had read the description of the amulet, so I knew Dante had a brother named Vergil, and Trish mentions his brother is gone in the opening scene. So after he freaks out when he sees the amulet and takes his helmet off, I knew "Oh, it's his brother, that makes sense. Neat."
      The "liiiGGGGHHHT" line is what I meant by accidentally funny, I burst out laughing when he said it.

    • @flamingfighter3334
      @flamingfighter3334 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah my overall point is that they make big emotional story beats about scenes lime those two, but theres so little setup overall in the narrative that it can feel like your missing aomething.
      Vergil is mentioned in the beginning and in the amulet which i alsp read as early as possible, and then its never really mentioned again until that scene towards the end and the gravitas makes idt seem like there would be at least 1 or 2 scenes where he talks about his brptjer, preferably talking to trish since it would also develop their relationship enough that dante being devastated by her loss could make more sense beyind just her appearance

      The original game is just..something!
      The story is literally Ecco's family just getting sucked out of the sea, & Ecco just swims through dark caves, open oceans with sharks & crabs that try to maul him, ice cold waters, goes to a lost city, goes back in time to the dinosaurs & nearly gets eaten by dunkleosteus, then fights a DNA God, gets powers given to him by that DNA God, and then time travels so he can get sucked up with his family...to then decapitate aliens!
      I would say the 1st & 2nd Bad Futures is where Ecco: Defender of the Future picks up (Man's Nightmare & Dolphin's Nightmare).
      It's literally an abandoned factory dystopia with abused dolphins created by humans in one timeline, & then N*zi Dolphins bullying other dolphin cultures in another timeline!
      And that's after the original timeline part where you explore caves & fight a giant shark. The whole game can be intense. Either way, love the game & the other 2 original games (Ecco & Ecco The Tides of Time).
      Ecco Jr is some backstory game with no threats in it, & Ecco Jr on the Sega Pico is just bad.

    I get that DMC 1 compared to modern games of the genre can make it seem kind of quaint and dated, but judging it by its own standard I think it holds up extremely well. I also think it has the best hardest difficulty (Dante Must Die Mode) of the entire series as the DMD in other entries makes enemies feel a little too tedious. And while DMC1's combat might not top some of the genre's latest and greatest, I'd still hold it up above most other action heavy games that have released recently, especially games with floaty Arkham style combat.

    The only thing that I'll agree with you on is the camera and the voice acting but I will say that part of the charm of Devil May Cry 1 is it's voice acting

    • @flamingfighter3334

      Aging poorly would refer to the phenomena of a game feeling dated in comparison to modern iterations of the genre.
      Hes not saying dmc1 is bad to play now, just that the genre and sequels ot served as the foundation for has improved such that its no longer necessarily a "must play" to experience what the medium has to offer.
      Dmc1 isnt dayed because its bad now, its dated because dmc3, dmc4, bayonetta, and other character action games have improved greatly on the formula.
      In a different vein, games like RE: Remake havent necessarily aged badly poorly because games of its style kind of stopped coming out and the games that have come out afterwards dont necessarily improve the subgenre its carved out of

    2) It is very limited if compared to newer iterations, that much is true, but it still is very much playable and there definitely is fun to be had.
    Jet Force Gemini is that one Rare game on the N64 that I've never played and people have been dissing it for over a decade now. I'm almost convinced it is that bad even if I never touched it. But you couldn't talk me out of Musashi. I own it and I'm still gonna play it. Some day...

    I booted up DMC1 (pc hd remaster) a couple of days ago to check out one tiny detail and ended up beating the whole thing. It's aged way better than i remembered (with an updated control scheme).
    It's nothing like 3 or 4, but the combat is still satisfying in it's own way, it's more about exploiting enemies weaknesses rather than styling them into oblivion. The only issue i had the whole way was Mundus' first stage, which has inverted flying controls but only for the vertical axis.

    Kinda disappointing you don't go into the reasons why some elements of older games don't age well aside from the fact that tolerance for BS tends to go down as one gets older. It's an interesting topic but just talking about problems in a few older games without even going into how a lot of these problems tend to be typical for games in general during the era they came out kind of makes it seem like those problems are unique to those specific games rather than a still fairly young form of media still in a younger stage learning how to do things.

    Let's not forget that impossible boss fight with Mizar at the end where you have to shoot his back with only homing missiles. It was near impossible to aim within 1 second but what screwed me over were the upgrade canisters. You can give a character a lot of upgrades for one weapon and have the other lacking that ammunition. And unfortunately, they never told me that I needed to have somewhere near 25 or more on my main character to safely take him down. To this day I have that uncompleted save file for that stupid mistake.

  • @NintendanGX
    @NintendanGX 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    17:38 This statement is untrue. The best examples of collectathon platformers do not waste your time, and utilise all the unique gameplay mechanics on offer to give the playable character fun and interesting abilities to use in tandem with the non-linear level design. You don't need every single item to progress, just a set amount, and it's up to you how you do so or whether or not you need to even go into a level when you have enough to move on to the next hubworld. Banjo Kazooie, Super Mario 64 (mostly), Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Jak & Daxter, Spyro 1, 2 & 3 and even Super Mario Odyssey get this oh so right, and are prime examples of timeless collectathon platformers that can still be enjoyed to this day.
    You yourself just might not be a fan of 3D platformers in general unless they're linear one-and-done deals, which is fine, but don't throw every game in this genre under the bus just because you're not qualified nor interested to talk about. And before anyone even says this, no. It's not an outdated genre. Genres literally cannot be outdated by definition. Judge these games by their own merits, and if you think they're outdated, give me reasons WHY they're outdated, or WHY they're not as fun as later games in the genre. I don't care for hyperbole, I don't care for nitpicking a small section of a game, I need examples, I need to know how the product is overall. If you want to make bold claims with nothing to back it up, I'm not interested, your argument is invalid. You're not entitled to an ignorant opinion, you're entitled to an informed one.

      Hooded Man Text-based games are a dime a dozen, even if you can't find them on the AAA market. You can look up many of the countless games made on Twine or other free browser-based text adventures. It's not hard to find. But besides that, this isn't a conversation about dead genres (which is never permanent by the way, which has been proven time and time again and will continue to be the case for as long as this industry is alive), but rather about how the majority of arguments that a game is "outdated" are poorly explained and the people making these arguments aren't taking into consideration various aspects, such as the criteria by which we determine a game is outdated, whether or not it is still enjoyable to play in spite of that, and whether the person who dislikes this game has reasons partaining to a genre he is invested in or doesn't even enjoy the genre to begin with and isn't qualified to fairly judge the game's quality.

    Brave Fencer Musashi might not have aged all that well, but it had a ton of charm and personality. The voice acting alone was pretty good for the time, and it helped make the world and characters that much more alive and real. I also really liked how you could go around unlocking new areas with your powers that weren't necessarily hard to miss, but still out of the way enough to warrant and reward exploration. To this day I have yet to see another game with cheese aging mechanics.

    Kingdom Hearts 1 also hasn't aged too well. It's still good, but magic was hardly needed outside of Cure, Aero, and the occasional thunder. Platforming was super stiff and jumps were were barely accomplishable. Cutscenes were unskippable. The constant mashing of the X button didn't lend itself well to giving us more variety in our combos, and that wouldn't be fixed until KH 2. Also, Summons were absolute trash, with the only good one being Tinkerbell.

      @Harakengard 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      While i agree that the summons were trash and that the jumps were hard at the beggining, i actually really like the platforming. Was it stiff? Sure it was before you unlock the super jump but that pushed me to actually explore and lose myself into the game... Unlike KH2. Ok first off, i love KH2 to death but while i think it's a step forward compared to the original when it comes to gameplay, i also feel it lost things that made the original immersive : the pleasure of exploring the different worlds is pretty much gone and while both the gameplay and the mini games are fun as hell, the different worlds feel quite the same gameplay wise (with the exception of a couple). The first KH had a lot of little elements that weren't really useful in the main adventure but made the worlds feel more alive. I also hate the fact that you have to level-up the fusions to unlock some special abilities : i feel exploring in KH2 was already pretty dull but they made it even worse by forcing to grind for them. Thankfully, KH3 was a massive improvement over KH2 on that point and is (for me) by far the most fun KH to explore.

  • @iggy9790
    @iggy9790 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jet Force Gemini is like any games from the SNES / N64 and into the GCN era. It wasn't just about taking CoD or Half Life and modding it into a new game - new controls, physics & mechanics were implemented to make the whole experience new (better or for worse).
    If you play Jet Force like a run & gun shooter in the strictest sense - it feels bad. But that's because the game actually incorporates a tactical approach to the gun play with more primary focus on platforming not shooting.
    Ideally you actually use the Pistol 95% of the time switching to other weapons only for very specific reasons that are often quickly resolved and back to pistol you go. You don't mash Pistol either. If you wait 1 and a half seconds between shots the default shot hits the enemies head automatically unless they're running away at the time.
    Machine Gun os used to clear out swarms of fliers and if you feel lazy fighting small shield enemies.
    Big shield enemies can eat your Tri-Rockets.
    You'll also find that the game spoon feeds you enemy relevant ammo the room before an encounter. Ammo that respawns for a refresh once you clear the new room. Also, in the rooms with the Elite flying swarms (the ones with deadly accuracy, massive damage and advanced flying formations) ALWAYS have a limited invincibility item in the room which should last more than long enough to stand their and wipe them out with the Machine Gun.
    Boss fights are isolated to a rail shooter type side dodge & shoot system allowing you to focus on aiming & timing.
    I just finished a play through of it recently on N64 and I actually feel it has held up for what it is. Now that being said, that kind of frankenstein shooter/platforming as a Genre holding up is something else entirely. I personally though that genre maxed out and left the building long before Ratchet & Clank or Jak & Dexter came out.

      Unfortunately changing up your combos with the wait timed presses doesn't change the outcome of most combat.

      Austin Eruption You can't be serious? As a veteran of the series I can tell you that you're dead wrong. It absolutely does make a difference, especially in boss battles. Go watch some pro play vids or something. This is not subjective or opinion. This is 100% pure FACT. Changing attack strings and changing between weapons such as Ifrit DT and Sparda factually does more DPS/Burst Damage than mashing the same button over and over. This is especially true in higher difficulties.

    • @austineruption
      @austineruption  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think you misunderstood what I said.
      I said that when you're casually playing the game on a normal difficulty, there's no need for me to change up my combo strings while getting footage because it literally doesn't change the outcome of what I was doing.

    I'll have to disagree with you on Musashi, I think it's aged quite a bit better than a lot of action RPGs.
    Also, that timed mission was a nightmare even at the time. Also, the sequel isn't a bad game at all. It doesn't capture the magic of the original, but it's still solid

    • @BerryBabaBear
      @BerryBabaBear 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah musashi stills offers A LOT even compared to games nowadays, musashi 2 though just barely a subpar game and didn't even held up against its predecessor. if you compare it side to side, musashi 2 feels have extremely lazy design or maybe very little budget compared to the first. most element in 1 is gone in 2 and it became only a hack and slash genre title.

    Man... seems like someone's forgotten how to have fun. Yeah, some modern conventions have made some of these older games feel slow or wonky but nostalgia isn't the only thing allowing these games to still be fun. Seriously, Ecco the Dolphin for instance is a fantastic emotional experience. The old sounds and sheer emptiness of it make it seem so much more creepy. Even if they were to remake the game, clean everything up, and modernize it, there's a chance that all the charm would get lost.

      Definitely, I often see people say mario 64 is just impossible to control after playing odyssey. Like of course if you play the new mario game then go back to one from over 20 years ago it's gonna feel weird for a bit. That doesn't make it bad, just different.
      To me I feel like for a game to have aged badly, that means it doesn't have enough substance to be enjoyed for very long. The controls or programming or whatever are identical to how they were back in the day, if you could put up with them back then you can put up with them now. Games like OOT are absolutely braindead boring to me now because it feels like it was designed entirely around the player not knowing what 3D space was. Cool at the time but it makes the whole game trivial nowadays. Everything is technically solid about the game, but the puzzles in the final dungeon being as complex as *push block with the sun on it into the sun* isn't fun 20 years later.

    You know, while you were talking about the Afro Samurai, I suddenly felt like playing Furi again.
    And then you mentioned that they both had the same art director. And it all makes sense, even during my first playthrough I recall the game (especially one specific boss) reminding me of "that Afro Samurai manga that came out a few years ago that I never actually read".
    Really neat to know!

    Okay say what you want about the original DMC's gameplay, camera, and "plot," but for me personally, it managed to scratch a particular itch that no other game in the series has been able to since. I just really love the game's aesthetic and overall sense of atmosphere. All the little things you can look at that have flavor text added a lot, and the castle was a really cool interesting location that was surprisingly well fleshed out. None of the other games gave me that same sense of wonder about the world I was moving around. The rest of the series doubled down on the dumb fun action spectacle aspect, and really improved the gameplay, but they never did scratch that same itch the first game did for me. My favorite parts of the original weren't combat encounters, they were just wandering around exploring the castle and island and finding new things to look at.

      But if she was REALLY into it, wanting it to be a regulkar thing...I'd either keep her as a part-time fuck buddy, if she agreed to not force the "furry" thing. Or just drop her all together.

    how is saying DmC is more fun to play than dmc1 heresy? DmC dante is similar to DMC4 Nero. He is just a streamlined vers of dante without styles. Not to say he lacks style. sure he is no Dante from the OG dmc but DmC dante has more style at one time(in combat) than DMC3 dante does on ps2. PC is a different story though because you can mod style switching.
