  • How to solve the problem of a washing machine restarting on its own after a wash cycle. 1.Set wash cycle knob to normal. 2. Turn all other knobs too far left. 3. Hold start button down until cycle status lights goes out (approximately 3 seconds). 4. Turn wash cycle nob one full turn to the left back to normal. 5. Next turn wash cycle knob three clicks to the right. 6. Next turn wash cycle knob one click to the left. 7. Next turn wash cycle knob one click to the right. Stop. (Cycle status lights will come on.) 8. Next turn wash cycle knob to the right until only wash, rinse and done lights stay on. Stop 9. Next push start button and the cycle status lights will turn off. 10. Next unplug the washing machine from electrical outlet for ten seconds and then plug back into outlet. 11. Next open washing machine lid and you are done. FYI You can restart the process at any time by holding the start button down for approximately 3 seconds.

Thanks so much for this post! Saved me from having to call a technician. This is a fix that keeps on working. I did more research and found more detail in the strangest post from Whirlpool that is marked, "Please note these instructions cannot be sent to the consumer." Evidently these washers have something called "Continuous Test Mode" and it is possible to accidentally put your washer into Continuous Test Mode. In my case my daughter came and visited and used the laundry and somehow managed to manipulate the dial just right so make it go into Test Mode.
I had to try a few times to get the fix to work. When you're turning the knob 3 clicks to the right you need to stop for a moment at each click. So for those that want a little more detail until you get to the Step 8 as shown in the main Post, I have copied these steps from the official Whirlpool memo that I found helpful:
-To reset (clear) the washer, rotate the Cycle Selector Know counter-clockwise (left) to clear any sequence
-Rotate the cycle selector knob Clockwise (right) 1 click and wait 1/2 second
-Rotate the cycle selector knob Clockwise (right) 1 click and wait 1/2 second
-Rotate the cycle selector knob Clockwise (right) 1 click and wait 1/2 second
-Rotate the cycle selector knob Counter-Clockwise (left) 1 click and wait 1/2 second
-Rotate the cycle selector knob Clockwise (right) 1 click
All LED lights (except lid locked) should be flashing On and OFF in 1/2 second intervals.
--NOW FOLLOW STEP 8 as described in the main post....

My washer kept on going from Spin cycle back to the wash cycle for a total of two full wash cycles before going to “Done”. This fixed it! It would be helpful for there to be an explanation as to why this worked but still very grateful to the poster for sharing. I love the internet!!

Omg...THANK YOU!!! Washer has been "broken" (endlessly repeating unless i open within 3 minutes of completion...it starts over and over and over). i tried several other fixes that were similar but none worked. THIS DID!!! Huge stressor taken away from my daily life. Thank you!!!

Wow! This solved my problem. It's been over 30 minutes since my last load of laundry finished. Normally this machine would just start all over again. It was driving me crazy! I thought I needed to replace the control board or something. I didn't want to buy another washing machine especially since I have been out of work during this pandemic. I really appreciate people like you who take the time to post these videos to help us all out.

    Thank you for the video!
My parents just purchased a new set 2 years ago and they have had to time it for 40 minutes , so they could catch it on the final rinse cycle before it started over again. They bought a new set and gave me theirs, they didn't even want me to trouble shoot it, they were so sick of it. I just got the set (identical to yours) home, and found your video, and did everything you said and it's been sitting there for 20 minutes after the last cycle and never started on its own again.
Thank You for the video!!!! You fixed my washer!!!!!! ♡

Looks as though you have helped a lot of others! I bought a very lightly used washer today and this same problem was going on! I was furious to find it wasting electricity. However after a two hour search online throughout reviews I finally found your video! To say thank you seems so small, however I do sincerely thank you for posting this video! Such a great help as it worked for my washer!!

Have a Kenmore 400 Series with same symptoms. I did above ^ procedure twice with no lights coming on. I was reading steps and taking my time performing the steps on the machine. Then I asked my wife to read the steps to me and I did each step with a quicker pace. Yay! Lights came on as predicted and the procedure completed as described. First load completed and washer stopped as it should. Fingers crossed that future loads continue as they should. THANKS!

Acer Juglans i do not why Americans consumers and consumers from others countries, specially , 3rd world countries have allowed that the big companies changed their heavy duty clasic models washers for this crap, an example nowadays whirlpool one of the best brand in the market sucks, why?? Cause they changed the whole system of the washer, motor, transmission, control panel( now its a motherboard) these machines are giving a hard time no only to consumers to repairmen as well, using a domestic machine should not be so complicated, for heavens sake, complicated to use easy to break.

I have repaired many appliances, but have never came across this problem until today. Came across a Maytag with the same problem.
That being said, I am attempting to learn more about the electronic models. I am somewhat familiar with the tech sheets. Still trying to get them down pat.
At first, I thought he was going to recalibrate, but I was wrong. I have yet to come across anything about turning the other controls to the right.
I will also look to see what test/purpose Wash, Rinse, and Done lights are used for. I know different light combinations are used for different purposes.
I may buy the one I came across out of curiosity.
If this solves the problem on a consistent basis, it will be great to know in the future.
Btw, not too unusual to find coins under the washplate/agitator.
I saved this video. If I buy the machine that does the same thing, I will rely again.
