Save Money Refilling Your Nespresso Vertuoline Coffee Pods with Mycap Foils

  • UPDATE: I find that the machine is really picky with the type of grind. I find that the thickness of the Lavazza coffee is the perfect thickness for the machine. I tried to grind my own coffee and the pod gets clogged. Pressure builds up inside then the foil kind of explodes off, pouring coffee grinds into the cup. So if you want to grind your own coffee, I suggest you get a good coffee grinder that can grind it to the consistency of the Nespresso grind or the Lavaza one. I also found that pressing the foil down on the inside edges is critical otherwise coffee gets inside that lip unevenly during spinning and the pod gets unbalanced and then the machine makes some horrible noises.
    This is a video on how to refill the nespresso vertuoline coffee pods using the mycap foils. You can buy the mycap foils and holder kit in the links below. I have also provided links to the airtight coffee container I use and also the lavazza coffee type I use.

    • @hatuxka
      @hatuxka 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      gasdorfic muncher this is exactly the problem. they are made in China. god knows what they use as the glue or the tops. I switched to simply heavy duty aluminum foil, cut to about the size of needed to cover the capsule w a margin to spare. Set them on the filled capsule, fold over a bit, put the capsule on the little holder, readjust the position if needed, and clamp the machine top down and lock it. Start the centrifuge and get your coffee made. Works great.

      heavy duty foil I try that , I used three of the sticky foil ones that were in the 100 count kit .
      the machine was not get enough pressure the glue was not holding seal fails no water getting in the cup
      the problem I have with verismo is that I have to drive 3 miles to bed and beyond in a mall to get disks they don't sell at starbucks in town ? and by the time they reach the shelf they are marked up in price to like 1.50 for a half cup of coffee you get at starbucks .
      they make the disks very sneaky soo people cant take the seal off and reuse them lol

      gasdorfic muncher I really like Daniel's method. I was also considering the 100 pack of foil stickers, but after reading your issues, held back.
      I bought 8 of the 16 oz cans of Lavazza espresso grind coffee when it was on sale for $3.99 each. That's what I use in the Vertuoline capsules. It's a good coffee...full bodied. I would say that I use about 1.2 oz in a coffee capsule. Quite a savings from the genuine capsules.
      Wanted to love the foils, but after reading your issues, stopped in my tracks.

    I have to thank you for sharing this video with us. I enjoy my coffee so much more. Many experiments have been performed and its been fun. I bought the full kit and few observation that I'd like to share with you are:
    1 - I tap the pod while in the holder so that the coffee settles down better.
    2 - Once I set the foil over the pod, I use the brush to set the outer rim first. Then I set the inner rim ( using the brush)
    3 - I tuck the foil nicely at the reverse so that it is smooth. This has really helped with the powder spilling out.
    4 - I send out a prayer for you :)
    Thanks again!

    Purchased the kit directly from My-Cap Canada, it arrived in two days.
    Excellent cup of coffee on the first try thanks to this video and some of the helpful comments. I've been drinking Starbuck's Verona for about 6 years so the My-Cap let's me enjoy the coffee I like with benefits of the Nespresso and if I save some money in the process, while reducing the waste, even better. It really isn't that difficult or time consuming once you've cleaned out a few pods.
    I used the Intenso pod with the Verona beans ground a little coarser than the espresso setting on my Breville burr grinder. Filled the pod about 3/4 and gently tamped down.Once I centered and pressed the foil in place, I simply ran my fingernail around the inside ridge to seal it and folded the rest of the foil over. Done.
    I figured it might be a little strong so I held the button down on the Nespresso to keep the water flowing a bit longer, this helped to weaken it a bit and the Nespresso will automatically fill the cup to that level each time. The result was the best cup of Verona I've ever made.
    To date, I've used the Cuisinart with integrated Burr grinder, various coffee presses, Bodem, Keurig, Aero-press and other than the Cuisinart, none has produced as good a cup of Verona (for me) as the Nespresso and I have the added benefit of the crema on top.
    Update: Three weeks in, have switched to the filter as it allows me to use more coffee and produces more crema. Foil ruptures too easily if you use too much coffee. Also, can use regular coffee filters rather than ordering from My-Cap. Sorry My-cap but $100 for a year's worth of filters vs $5.00 just doesn't make sense.

    Right on! This machine makes a great cup of coffee and I've been using the my-cap foils for my wife's pods and I go even cheaper with using the paper filter and plastic disc for my cups. We get a great foam head and I like the flavor of other store bought coffee better than what comes in the Nespresso pods. Their pods are quite expensive and we don't like their coffee flavor, so we buy our own and average about 35 cents for my wife's pods (she has the foil caps) and mine are about 20 cents (I use the plastic disc and cut my own paper filters - bought 100 #4 filters for 1.30 and they produce 6 filter circles per full filter). I couldn't be happier. I was bumming a lot when our old Senseo died years ago - it produced a nice foam, but this Nespresso Vertuoline has crazy foam - I love it!

      @Daniel-mw9jd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amer Aljabr I was buying the whole bean Lavazza Oro for a while and grinding it with a Capresso but I found the grind was inconsistent. It would have multiple sizes of grind. I had issues with the pod "expoding" from time to time because of this so I stuck to the pregrpund Lavazza Oro. I find this coffee has the perfect grind size for this machine. I am sure there are ppl that have struck a perfect cord with grinding it themselves though. You seem to be one of those. what grinder do you use?

    • @ameraljabr405
      @ameraljabr405 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel P. Well, it's about trial and error. If you feel the flow is week just make grinding coarser until you reach the suitable flow speed. Regarding grinder, I use (Hario) manual grinder, process takes from 3-5 minutes, costs around 22$. Now I decided to buy an electric one, after many searching I concluded the best one with a reasonable price is (baratza encore) costs around 155$. The other good grinders are way above that. Good luck

    I like mycap product , im buying 20 caps of regular and 10 of espresso shot. After 8month with 3 coffee per day , the caps work perfectly. the best product to save a lot of money and have a nespresso quality. My best coffee with super creamy coffee is lavazza crema e gusto. the creama are really density. But remember the finnest coffee need to not compress on caps because the water pump have difficult to pass and open the foil by pressure so all of coffee goes out.

    This is an old kit. The new one is much better. Use the end of the brush to go completely around the lip and your problems with unbalanced pods will go away. Mine makes no more noise than the original pods. The biggest mistakes are to pack the coffee down too hard and press the foil down too hard. Both result in an exploded cap and grounds in your coffee.

  • @PaulGrantDesigns

    I would say if you're looking to go through this much trouble, you're probably better off additionally investing in a cheap true espresso machine. I have a classic Nespresso for really fast Americanos. When I want to use my own beans, I grind them and pack those into my Brevelle Cafe Roma... great crema. And when I just want to make a big pot of coffee for a few people, I use a regular Black and Decker coffee maker with the same ground beans. I prefer to grind Kimbo Expresso Bar beans.

Yes Nespresso got smart when they made this new unit, so u have to buy from them only. Older model NOT vertuo, u could get pods anywhere cheap.now only from Nespresso "boutique" on line costs even more. This hack is practical and clean. Just pick the right pod to re-use and good quality coffee. Thanks again.

      +Lisette Tackitt Here was my math calculation (all in $CDN) and based on espresso pods: Nespresso store (or online) bought --> $0.80/pod. Home made pods made with my-cap and Illy brand coffee (premium brand at about $10/250gms) --> $0.25/pod. So savings of approximately 70% or 55 cents per cup.

    • @Daniel-mw9jd
      @Daniel-mw9jd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the reply guys. The foils come to $0.15 cents a piece. The Lavazza coffee I buy is about $6 a pack (Walmart Canada), Each pack is 250 grams. I can get probably about 20 full size pods per pack of coffee. That about $0.30. So that would make it $0.45 a pod VS $1.10 for a full size pod at nespresso. That's a pretty significant savings. I also started using Lavazza Qualita Oro. I find it is a lot smoother than the Crema e Gusto. It costs more but it is worth it.

    • @timfisher393
      @timfisher393 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lisette Tackitt At 15 cents for a cap and 20 cents (at the most) for a couple tablespoons of coffee you should get less than 30 cents a piece. The person who said 45 cents is overpaying for their coffee. 250 grams for $6 - $10? What is this Canada or something? :) Vs. $1.10 for what amounts to industrial grade coffee from them (despite what they say, they even mix in cheap robusta beans and claim it's better). I buy green beans at and roast my own so that's at $11 - $14/lb. for extremely high grade coffee. You can stuff approximately 20 grams in a pod. so a pound should make 25+ pods. I don't do that much since I am using good coffee and it's much much more flavorful than their junk. So I am getting close to 30-35 cents.

      I was just thinking the same thing. There is an 'ease of use' factor to these vs. a traditional coffee machine...which is easier than the myriad of other methods to make coffee or espresso. Anything in life that's worth having is worth putting some effort into.

    Why not just buy the Nespresso Pro machine that has coffee and foam all in one place? I’m trying to figure out the pro’s of going for a machine like this which needs a separate frothing process. Comments?

    • @Daniel-mw9jd
      @Daniel-mw9jd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      djpatrickperez This machine has smaller and bigger pod options. The nespresso pro only has the small pods. The Vertuoline is also cheaper. There's also the fact that if one of the 2 devices breaks, I can just replace that one device.
      The Pro doesn't look like a bad product though!

    • @djpatrickperez
      @djpatrickperez 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel P. Thanks. My comment was more geared toward the pro machine, that has the ability to froth milk as part of the process. Here, it appears, you have to make coffee, then froth milk. The Nespresso pro, is an “all in one” option. This appears to be a machine geared more to coffee (I.e. mugs) drinkers more than espresso drinkers. To make a macchiato, for example, on the Nespresso pro machine, makes much more sense, and is a lot faster. ,

Have you thought about the glue that's on the foil under the pressure of the machine will definitely mix into your coffee as it dissolves with the heat and pressure and so how healthy can that be if you ingest this glue mixed into your delicious crema? Just wondering?

    • @mammothman777
      @mammothman777 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm you should probably go for espresso grind or slightly finer. You could open an unused capsule, put the grind in a zip lock bag and take it with you to Starbucks and have them try and match the grind.

    • @bluemystic7501
      @bluemystic7501 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You want to be on the fine side of medium or the medium side of fine. Grinding too fine will give you that bitter nespresso coffee flavor.

    If $1.10 per cup is too much, then Folgers might be the way to go.

    • @Focusfin100
      @Focusfin100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What if you have multiple drinkers having two cups a day. Now your $1.10 per cup is $4.40 a day or $1600/year. So if you can cut that down by even half, you've saved $800/year.
      There's also the fact that you can choose your favorite coffee and you're not consuming hundreds of pods per year.

      BabyboyEzequias I am still doing it. I am using the exact same machine as in the video. Hasn't broken yet and it's been a few years. There really isn't anything to clog other than the tube where the coffee pours out of I guess but I have had no such issue. There is a new kit I started using lately. It uses a coffee filter and plastic insert. Will make a video of that one soon.

    People: There are cheaper and better expresso coffee machines that dont use capsules, so if you are planing on doing what is shown in this video, you can just buy those machines and save time non refilling capsules ;).

    • @anorthernwolf
      @anorthernwolf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, certainly not cheaper and you will have to buy a good grinder, besides. Then it takes some time and a lot of practice to get a decent shot.

    • @fukushimadaichi415
      @fukushimadaichi415 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@anorthernwolf Not true you can buy one that has a pressurized basket that dosnt need a precise grind. You could order coffee online and have it delivered pre ground for an espresso machine. Or buy a bag from Starbucks have it ground for you at the store or buy espresso ground from your local grocery store. The more expensive machines that dont use pressurized baskets require a quality grinder.

    I mean really dude !!!! Nespresso coffee and machine is the bomb dot com. Do you know Nespresso recycle their capsules if you return them? The money goes to pay for health insurance for the farmers and family, pay for schools and hospitals. Also the grounds and place back on the farmers land. Yes Nespresso provide return shipping and handling label plus bag. And besides, if you register your machine, with Nespresso you will receive special promotion of capsules.
    This dude is not smart and very cheap
