Brilliant! I have been using this method for a couple of weeks and it works like a charm. If you fill the capsule carefully it doesn't wobble when it spins and it makes great crema. A couple of things you can try: Make a foil cutting die from a cookie cutter - sharpen the cutting edge with a Dremel and a small drum sander. Lay the laminated foil on a styrofoam block (I used blue foam) and gently twist the cutter through the foil and slightly into the foam. The firm yet easily cut foam prevents dulling the die and makes a nice round clean cut foil. Separating the inner and outer cups for reuse after you brew can be a bit tricky because the machine presses them together very tightly. A suggestion is to cut out the bottom of the outer cup with an xacto knife to make them easier to separate. Gently press up on the inner bottom while prying the rim up with a dull knife and they will separate quite easily.
I have been using this method for more than 2 or 3 years, works excellent fine thanks a lot, just to add something ... you need to add best quality coffee and you are done!!!
You have an oddly relaxing voice... Thanks for the video, my pod delivery is 3 days past due and Counting. That is the main drawback with this machine I see now, POD accessibility.
Thank you for the tutorial. I followed your example except to use ready made foils to save time and result is 100% success for more than 120 cups. Thank you so much. Below is my review posted in foil product in another web site. But you should get the credit... **** Review below ***** Have done a lot of research in different ways to reuse nespresso pods with my own coffee and balance the efforts to do so. I am quite happy with this product after successful use for about 60 times (never fail once). Strong and reliable. Here are my steps to use 1. Need to reuse and modify two original pods. Carefully cut off the rim to have enough flat edge exposed for foil lid portion with glue. Remove the aluminum cover of the other pod (still keep the rim and bar code beneath intact) as outer pod so that when the first one staggered on top of the 2nd one, the combined edge looks just like one pod. 2. Fill with your choice of ground coffee (I choose fine at about 5 to 6 setting) to top and lightly press it and cover the pod with foil lid. Slightly larger lid actually makes it easier. 3. Fold the portion of lid that extended over the edge. It is fine to cover the bar code since it is inner pod. Check if edges stay clean as one after staggering with outer pod. 4. I would recommend removing the pod after use while it is still warm. I never have pod failed to eject even if I did not have smooth edge. Else, it may sometimes stick a bit and machine may stall when it tries to eject the pod. When it happens, just power cycle the machine, and the machine will open fully to allow manual retrieve. 5. Some complained the foil is hard to remove. It is actually very easy to do in this usage. Glue is so strong that I can start ripping the foil edge from any point like peeling onion. I actually appreciate the lid is slightly larger. Easier to align, less glue in contact of coffee (lid is food safe but stil) and easier to remove. If not in a hurry to make a coffee, it takes only a minute or two to make your own pod. I get to choose any organic coffee beans, even decaf and save money and environment along the way.
Great hack! I love having the freedom to choose a high quality organic coffee to refill my pods with! I like to buy decaf organic whole bean coffee & grind it fresh at home. The Nespresso ground coffee is at least 1-2 months old by the time it reaches my door.
Thank you! This is the easiest method for me to use. It works flawlessly every time! I especially like that I don't have to buy anything special to do it.
Great video! I never stop learning from your videos. Of course I subscribed. You are an excellent teacher talking clamly and clearly. Great job, thanks.👍👍👍
Doing this for 3 years now, BUT had to tweak / improve method to SAVE time and pods! 1) i flipped the pods…full rim with foil on INSIDE, cut rim with barcode on OUTSIDE. The cut rim basically stays semi-STUCK in the machine…I just pop in full rim pods (no more crushed pods!). Only need to cut / sacrifice one pod to get the job done, the others remain full rimmed and DURABLE. 2) I dry/sterilize the pods in my air fryer (4min @ 250deg); prevents contamination, saves me from drying each and waiting, allows me to grind the coffee while i wait. 3) Doing in BULK (60 pods at one sitting) I’m down to 40 sec per pod, aka $100 per hour. In this video, it takes him like 4min per pod (which is crazy). In my case (i.e. I'm not a CEO and I still cook my own eggs for breakfast), 40sec each pod is time well SPENT.
Nice jack. I think i created the first foil hack video but in mine i was cutting the foil with on the backside with a razor so the bar code was showing. However over time the issue with that the bar code degrades from from slicing over it and the machine eventually quits being able to read it so your inner pod method solves that!!
Thanks for the hack!! Was trying just using press n seal and was getting alot of grounds. This hack seals up real nicely. Accidentally tried just using one of the inner pods and machine would not do anything. Finally dawned on me that I had not put in an inner pod, d'uh.
I'm glad it is working well for you Jay. Yes, using just the glad press n seal is not enough... that will only work some of the time but when it fails (bursts) it is a mess. Yep, I've forgotten to put the outer pod with the barcode on before too :)
Hi. Thanks for the video. I followed the steps and tried on my Nespresso vertuo pop and Nespresso vertuo next. The coffee was not getting dispensed to the cup. Then, I found out that the coffee is going to the (Drip tray) underneath the (Used Capsules Bin). What could be the reason? Am I doing something wrong?
Question. After the capsel is breached by the pins and nossle, do the pins retract before spinning? Im just wondering if its the (18) pins or the tripple steel propel or both that makes the capsul spin.
I'm glad it worked for you Debbie. Now the fun begins with experimenting with different coffee. Just a note, the crema can really vary depending on the coffee but at least you know the refill approach works. Enjoy!
It does not work for me with the Vertuo Next machine. It does not put enough water through for some reason. I have done a good job of making the refil pods.
doesn't it affect the spin? I thought this machine spins the pod to extract the coffee. If you put it in another pod, then will it still spin correctly?
With the capsules I learned to make with you my vertuo machine is making a loud noise and the foil is popping up (getting grounds in the works). What can I do to correct that. I was successful for a couple months using your technique but now about every other capsule messes up. Please help!
Thank you for your generous information. First - do you think using 2 pods puts extra stress on the machine? Since I would definitely want to fill and reuse pods to save money, I wonder if opting for the original line of machines would be a better choice....?? I can see online sources for ordering refillable, stainless steel pods. I imagine there is nothing like this for the Vertuoline with it's bar code pods required for the machine to read and work. Also there are compatibles for the Nespresso Capsules for the original machines.
Hi Shirley, great questions. By cutting the thickness off of the lip of the inner pod, I do not feel like this is adding any additional stress on the machine. That step is important because if you don't remove that rim and double stack them then it would add stress. I've been doing this for over 3 years and have not had any issues personally. As far as Original Line vs Vertuo Line... do you mostly want coffee or espresso? The Vertuo machine do both but are specifically targeted to the North American market where coffee is more common. Vertuo capsules come in 5 sizes... espresso, double espresso, lungo, coffee, and alto in that size order. The Original Line machines focus on espresso and have more selection in that area compared to the Vertuo machines. If have an Original Line machine and want a larger cup like coffee then you brew an espresso and add extra hot water (Americano). The machine that is best for you will depend on what you like to drink. I'm a coffee drinker so the Vertuo machines are the best match for me. The patents for the Original Line machines expired which is why you see compatible capsules from 3rd parties. Nespresso fought that tooth and nail and lost the battle. However, they learned from their mistakes when designing the Vertuo Line. New patents and the barcode also gives them IP protection. I doubt we will ever see 3rd party capsules so refilling is really the only option if you want, well, more options.
@Mariel Kraus After a lot of indecision I finally have settled on keeping my Vertuo Nespresso. I ordered the kit from My-Cap, and I use the reusable cap with filter. www.my-cap.com/collections/frontpage/products/my-cap-vpack-complete-solution-to-make-your-own-capsules-for-nespresso-vertuoline-brewers?variant=44263248074 I am truly enjoying it and the freedom to experiment with my own coffee blends. I have gone from a partial cup in the mornings to having a 2nd. Love the crema and frothed milk in place of my old, powdered creamer.
Yes Candice you certainly can. I often make a full week of them at a time. You don't even need to put them in the outer barcode pod until you are ready to brew so you just need multiple inner pods to make them in advance.
yeah, but you do risk losing freshness because it's not vacuum sealed. That's the key to the Nespresso brand pods - good coffee beans and vacuum sealed so they stay fresh
The fact of using extra material cause of the barcode on the edge of the pod,on long therm will mess with sealling of the pod seat with the brewing chamber! Its tuned to be tight with only one pod edge, making pods having the double of thickness of the edge it will ruin the sealment and start to leak water or coffee while brewing whenever you want to use an original brand new Pod!
I tried your method and it works. Only thing is that it’s not making that thick crema top layer, it quickly dissolves. Do you think it’s the coffee? I’m using Bustelo, thanks.
Hi Leo, I'm glad my method is working for you. The coffee makes a big difference in the amount of crema. I don't know about Bustelo specifically but I've had some coffee that makes less crema than the Nespresso pods and others that make more than the Nespresso ones. In my testing everything remained the same (grind size, fill amount, etc) and I would consistently get a certain amount of crema for different coffee beans. I usually go to a local roaster but I also like Peets and Starbucks which are easy to find in the grocery store. Give some others a try!
Coffee Research Lab After some trial and error, I increased the cup size from 8oz to 12 oz and I am getting a very nice crema layer throughout. Subscribed✅👍🏼
maybe not gloss over the most important part.. which is using another pod for the barcode, because I really have no idea what your talking about. Doesn't the pod you filled with coffee have a bar code? You actually edited out the part where you combined the pods. Beautiful.
Oh No! I just bought a Vertuo Next and was planning to reuse the pods using this hack. Were you able to figure out how to use with Next? I hope your machine was NOT damaged as a result. Appreciate your feedback!
@@tatosvideos33 The machine is working ok so far but the hack is hit and miss. So far I am only able to reuse the grey alto pods and not always successful. The coffee came out much lighter than original pods.
@@avis8619 I am waiting for my Virtuo Next to arrive and am eager to try this hack. Nespresso pods are NOT available on Guam so it's such a hassle (and expensive) to keep shipping pods from the mainland. I'll let you know soon, thanks for taking the time and good luck!
I just got one of those machines, so I'm no expert on the subject, but I'm pretty sure you need to pack it in more. You are losing alot of the intended pressure by just scooping it in.
Ok..I need one of you brave ingenius Nespresso Vertuo hackers to figure out if the COMMERCIAL Ristretto capsules will work by dropping into Vertuo espresso pod? I can’t find any where in the inter webs that anyone has tried it yet.
Tara, I've never seen one of those in person but I don't believe that would work. The Vertuo machine will force water through the capsule so getting the foil seal right is important. Of course, if you emptied the coffee out of one of those then it probably could be used following my method but I don't think that is what you are trying to do.
I am very sad and upset. I did exactly as you said and I’ve tried using cling wrap which was really difficult to cut. So I thought I’d try the foil route. My brand new machine machine broke. It will not start up. Light goes on. Nothing. I’m really upset. Hacker beware!!
in the time and effort it takes to do this you can boil water and do a quick pour over which is hands down the better tasting method. a pour over cone can be as cheap as 5$ sometimes less. and filters cost 2$ for 100.
That's a good point BUT to do a proper pour over you need a scale, an electric kettle, and a chemex/V60/Malita type device. It's a whole different thing than the one-touch machines.
Here's a thought...if you want the ultimate in flexibility, you want to be able to use any coffee you please, you want to pay less per cup for your coffee and don't like Nespresso's pricing model -- then buy a real espresso machine and don't get the Nespresso. Yes, you will have to buy a coffee grinder that can do a good espresso grind to go with that espresso machine. But you will be drinking better coffee assuming you buy freshly roasted beans from an artisan roaster. And over time the cost savings on coffee will have paid for the equipment. To me it makes no sense to buy a Nespresso, the major benefit of which is convenience, and then spending a lot of time and effort trying to beat their system and making it inconvenient to use so you can save some money.
Why on earth would you refill coffee pods? The whole point of pod machines is convenience and to take the faff out of the process, if you want your own blends then a pod machine is not for you. Just by a proper coffee machine.
Convenience is only one nice thing about these machines. The way it works, with the centrifugal action feature, etc., It creates an amazing cup of coffee, with crema. With methods like these you can use the machine with many different types of coffee. Yeah, it's a pain, but it expands it's capabilities of you want to try different varieties, and save money.
Why… 🤦🏽♂️ as an avid coffee drinker this just boggles my mind. 1st thing is, if you want espresso, a regular automatic espresso maker is simply better and can make w/less work. 2nd it can be had for just about the same price of these machines. 3rd can make much better espresso or coffee. 😅
This takes way to many minutes to save one dollar, you need to know your worth. I would gladly spend the 1$ instead of doing this. Don’t make your own pods find a way to make more money. The. Buy the pods.
This is to give you freedom from the copy protection placed on this system and freedom to explore your own beans brewed using this system. It does take a bit of (reasonable) effect and won't be right for everyone.

since this vurteo spins the pods with centrifuge, won't the outer pod slip on the inner?
The expresso should be finely grind right?
which side of the foil goes towards the coffee, the plastic or the aluminum?
The plastic side goes toward the coffee.
I don't get it toward the end. You wrapped the foil over the barcode. How is it supposed to scan after that? Did you skip a step somewhere?

I just got one of those machines, so I'm no expert on the subject, but I'm pretty sure you need to pack it in more. You are losing alot of the intended pressure by just scooping it in.
Brilhant,genius,,😂😂😊
Hi, your trick is amazing. But I have an better idea, with that you don't need aluminum, the result is even better than the original!😀😃😄
THANK YOUUUUUUU!
Omg thanks
good

Ok..I need one of you brave ingenius Nespresso Vertuo hackers to figure out if the COMMERCIAL Ristretto capsules will work by dropping into Vertuo espresso pod? I can’t find any where in the inter webs that anyone has tried it yet.
Tara, I've never seen one of those in person but I don't believe that would work. The Vertuo machine will force water through the capsule so getting the foil seal right is important. Of course, if you emptied the coffee out of one of those then it probably could be used following my method but I don't think that is what you are trying to do.
WOW 🤩👏👏👏👏👏
I am very sad and upset. I did exactly as you said and I’ve tried using cling wrap which was really difficult to cut. So I thought I’d try the foil route. My brand new machine machine broke. It will not start up. Light goes on. Nothing. I’m really upset. Hacker beware!!
You were supposed to use Press N Seal, not cling wrap.
try these foils you wont have any issues check out these foils

in the time and effort it takes to do this you can boil water and do a quick pour over which is hands down the better tasting method. a pour over cone can be as cheap as 5$ sometimes less. and filters cost 2$ for 100.
Pour over coffee is great too!
That's a good point BUT to do a proper pour over you need a scale, an electric kettle, and a chemex/V60/Malita type device. It's a whole different thing than the one-touch machines.
And go buy a new coffeemachine when it's not work. Buy a set for refill with barcode insted much more safe.
This hack doesnt work at all. Makes a mess inside the machine as the pod spins at high speed.
I'll just buy a regular espresso machine! LOL
Nah, hacking is so much fun🤣🤣🤣
Anyone dont believe that is wrong suggestion.
Don't buy their machines I'd they don't give you the option . Just get a regular expresso machine. End of Story.
too much work though! might as well just make regular coffee lol
Not at all, you can mix and blend any combination to suit
Why on earth would you refill coffee pods? The whole point of pod machines is convenience and to take the faff out of the process, if you want your own blends then a pod machine is not for you. Just by a proper coffee machine.
Convenience is only one nice thing about these machines. The way it works, with the centrifugal action feature, etc., It creates an amazing cup of coffee, with crema. With methods like these you can use the machine with many different types of coffee. Yeah, it's a pain, but it expands it's capabilities of you want to try different varieties, and save money.
defeats the purpose of getting a machine with pods if you have the fill the pods.
Expresso !!! 🤦🏼♂️
Nope way too much effort
daddy af 😍
Why… 🤦🏽♂️ as an avid coffee drinker this just boggles my mind. 1st thing is, if you want espresso, a regular automatic espresso maker is simply better and can make w/less work. 2nd it can be had for just about the same price of these machines. 3rd can make much better espresso or coffee. 😅
This takes way to many minutes to save one dollar, you need to know your worth. I would gladly spend the 1$ instead of doing this. Don’t make your own pods find a way to make more money. The. Buy the pods.
Seriously...? Real freedom is just grinding straight into the portafilter on a traditional coffee machine. This is absurd.
you obviously haven't tasted these... I have used so many systems. this machine makes a fantastic espresso with great crema....
This is to give you freedom from the copy protection placed on this system and freedom to explore your own beans brewed using this system. It does take a bit of (reasonable) effect and won't be right for everyone.
then why are you here? just to be a snob?
This is awesome. Thank You!
