I just heard a heartwarming story about Prince Philip. After President Kennedy was assassinated and Jackie Kennedy was making funeral arrangements, she lost track of the then three year old John Kennedy. She found him playing on the floor with Prince Philip who had come to attend the funeral. His long life had to be filled with fascinating stories that I hope to hear.

Prince Philip was someone you have to appreciate for his willingness to say what he was thinking. I would MUCH rather know who I am dealing with than someone that is covert. He reminds me of my father-in-law. He can sometimes be cringy but you never, ever have to doubt or wonder where you stand with him. Take it or leave it. When he tells me I am getting a bit chunky, I know it is truth and don’t let it hurt my feelings. But when he tells you he loves you, it is like a badge of honor and there is no second guessing that either. My heart goes out to the queen.

When I was seven, in 1956, Philip visited my home city. The school arranged for some of us to go into the centre to be at the front near the Town Hall. His procession arrived, he was in a big black car. It stopped a little distance off the grand entrance to allow him to walk past us flag wavers.
Being the cheeky kid, I shouted out, "Prince Philip! How do you like Manchester?" He came over, smiled, and replied, "I've not seen much of it yet." I suppose that bit from the car to me was twenty paces at most, so not much indeed.

One thing people also need to take into consideration when they talk about some of his humour being offensive is that he was a military man from the age of 18 and right up to his retirement at the age of 96 he spent a lot of time around military personnel and as anyone who has served knows, the military and those who have served in it have a very different culture and sense of humour to the civilian population which most civilians find very shocking and highly offensive. So it is most likely that those 'gafs' were more a case of his military side slipping out than any prejudice or intention to cause offence.
In fact when questioned about it he did say that sometimes he would say things to people then realise that what he said might have caused offence and felt bad about it so he would go and try to make it right with the person he said it to.

I have an observation in regards to Prince Philip’s impolite statements. Although I understand that many people feel insulted by them, I think it’s important to take into consideration that he was 99. So many things have evolved in a century! Comments that people used to make only 20 years ago are considered offensive today, and in the same way some of the words/expressions we have today may not be appropriate in a few decades. So, my point here is if we look at history and the numerous events that took place in the past century, it’s important to understand that interpersonal communication also developed and will continue to do so.
My comment here is not a judgment of what is right or wrong, I just think we need to take his age into consideration and look at the bigger picture.

Philip had a very unsettled childhood. His father ran away with his mistress and his mother was institutionalized due to schizophrenia. He bitterly resented all the sympathy that was doled out to him by the various relatives who took him in, then sent him elsewhere. He thrived in boarding school because no one pitied him or brought up his parents. His tough, sometimes blunt, prickly character was forged very early in childhood.

Dear Dr G, thank you for wearing my favourite pink shirt for this video. Although I live in Australia, I am English, and I am quite shocked at how much this news has deeply shocked and saddened me. Along with most people in the United Kingdom, and the rest of the Commonwealth family of countries, lI feel very upset and somewhat unnerved at the death of HRH The Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh, as the British Royal Family has just ‘been’ there for the entirety of my life. Philip had problem adjusting not with the royal duties but when his wife unexpectedly became queen he had to live under one roof with the ex queen and mother-in-law Elizabeth and grandmother-in-law Mery, also an ex queen.
What normal man can adjust for living with three queens. So he was often missing from the palace spending quality time with his pals, partying, dancing, drinking. To keep her marriage Elizabeth moved her mom and grandma and gave him green light to do whatever innovations and modern accommodations he wished to. Thus she kept him closer and busy.

Many English people have a very dry humour and some people don't get it. My best friend has this quality. I liked Prince Phillip. He seemed to be a little immature compared to Queen Elizabeth, even when she was young. She seemed quite serious. For me, he seemed like a kid who needed growing up. I don't think he was serious when he said those inappropriate words. He really loved the Queen but it took some time for him to accept that she was much smarter and more important than him. I have watched some of The Crown and so far impressed. Harry reminds me of his Grandfather. I am not too keen on Prince Charles and wish Prince William is the next King. That was a great presentation. As a Canadian I am interested in the crown. My mother loved the Queen and looked a lot like her and about the same age. I would like to know the reason they live so long. Genetics or living a sheltered life ❤️❤️🇨🇦. Love your shirt and your plants are doing well...your humour makes me smile everytime.

I paused to say- The Lord High Admiral title would have meant a lot to Phillip- it was very touching. His was "on track" in his career to become "First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff"- the office of which which had been held by his Grandfather and Uncle. He had to resign from the RN when George V died so young-he had every expectation of a long Naval career at the time of his marriage. He was an alpha male for sure. He had a very sad childhood and made the most of his life he could. A wonderful Husband for the Queen. Edit to say- That was on the whole- a lovely respectful analysis. Thank you. He definitely was judged on his worst moments. I would like to add that the Queen is a "great bird" they had a "passionate" relationship-with all that entails - but her mother and sister were annoying to him- they were most likely what he complained about. Margaret was an entitled, spoiled, rude woman in her youth. I think she was humbled by old age and infirmity.

@@TheCandiceWang I dont. I read "Ma'am Darling" about "Margo"- that was eye opening. Margaret was imperious and demanding to be around by all accounts. And fun I am sure- but she was entitled. She did spend a lot of time with the Queen and Prince Phillip in her younger days. I think over all they were a close family. The Queen Mother had her reservations about his suitability. They did butt heads. Philip actually had more Royal Blood in him than the Queen or Margaret. The Queen Mother was chosen to be a suitable bride (by Queen Mary) for "the spare" not the heir. So she had no reason to be a snob about Phillip. But she was a great Queen. Queen Mary was the best Queen and one of the most interesting British Royals of the 20th century IMO.

As a somewhat anti-monarchist Brit, I’m usually Royal Family averse - you can only imagine how extensive the seemingly wall-to-wall media coverage of the Duke of Edinburgh’s passing is over here in the UK - but obviously I make an exception for a Dr. Grande video! Sincere apologies that my comment offended you, @TheCandiceWang [or anybody else]; that was certainly not my intent.
Due to the the British media’s persistent propensity, purportedly dissecting with often "questionable" journalistic integrity, absolutely *ANYTHING,* & _EVERYTHING,_ even _remotely_ royalty-related [although, _very occasionally,_ reporting a member of said family’s *ACTUAL* scandalous behaviour…'cough! _Prince Andrew + Jeffrey Epstein,_ cough!'😱] - plus _numerous_ royal family births, marriages, divorces, deaths & funerals having occurred during my *own* lifetime thus far, & the resultant, seemingly never-ending, infinitely lengthy accompanying blanket coverage devoted to said events over the decades - are almost _ENTIRELY_ the cause of my attempted, all-encompassing avoidance & encyclopaedic-averse, decidedly lacking comprehension of their family’s antics & extended biographies…beyond the unavoidable, ineludible bare minimum, anyway!
Hence my wholehearted agreement with you of my self-admitted, *complete &* _utter_ *ignorance* of _THAT_ particularly noteworthy nugget of knowledge!🙃 - regarding them being _actual_ distant cousins!😬

Three yrs before Prince Phillip was born much of Europe was still a Victorian era feudal empire. Extensive discussions with my parents & grandparents prove a completely different frame of reference with disease caused by miasma in air or ill wishes & a sense of hierarchy predestined. Yes they superficially changed with times, but attitudes were ingrained from their teenage years.

Prince Philip, trying to be as English as possible (like Korda, Leslie Howard, Pressburger etc., he came to England as a foreigner and turned himself into the ultimate English patriot), recognized that the most important national character trait of the English is humour. He tried to be humorous as a way of being very English and in that almost unique way the English have of developing ideas in conversations with others using humour, a catalyst for thought.
