I find the comfort and trust with each other that is between all the men in this video is such a change from the street life one encounters in North America. These guys may not have all the material things, but they do have a a strong honesty and connection with their community. It’s wonderful to see that.

What do you mean lost? This is a standard procedure to extract silver from its alloys.
1st, I appreciate your video, but I am astonished that this man would use this acid without some type of respirator because the fumes, the red fumes are life threatening.

wow look at the nitric/sulphuric acid fumes, would be harsh on the delicate lung tissues
He used a drop of nitric acid to dissolve little silver and convert it to silver nitrate, then tested it with brass key. Brass is an alloy of Zinc and copper, so it reduces the silver nitrate to silver powder back.
He added Nitric acid from the black can to dissolve the silver material to get silver nitrate solution with other impure metal salts. He selectively precipitates silver with copper plates. Blue solution is copper salt solution.
You can see the difference clearly from the initial weight and final weight. There is some loss. So, you can understand that silver material was not so pure.

I would love to spend some time with these guys.
No need this is very crude method, since he is an expert he handles cautiously. But for layman safety first, handling acids are dangerous, you can see the brown fumes, not an healthy thing, currently many suppliers give safe equipments to handle them safely.

What's the purpose of the copper? What does it do?
It makes silver stronger so it will not broke or bend
The silver atoms comes out of solution and attache themselves to the clean cooper surface.
The silver nitrate is in solution and the metallic copper will dissolve to form copper nitrate; as it does, it will precipitate the silver in solution as metallic silver. That is, copper is exchanged for the silver in solution and silver is replaced by the copper that is not in solution.
