Heart breaking absolutely heart breaking. First an foremost we lost a good man yesterday. My buddy got a ride down the taxi way in the back of a P51 piloted by David last year. Second what a shame this beautiful piece of history has been forever lost. Thankyou for giving us all the opportunity to see such an amazing aircraft that at one time was so secret a handful of people knew it existed.

I saw this plane when it was being rebuilt many years ago with my son we both took to it right away, something beautiful and simple about its design we loved.
Cant help feeling its a little personal its lost and very sad for Dave and his family.
You can tell in this video he loved what he did and flying that craft. Tragic is all one can say.

I'm very sad to learn the loss from this aircraft and he's pilot, but i remember that this flying wings (Horten had similar design and problems) was always unsafe in certain situations...the Only flying wing who was realy safe without "fly by wire" was the Fauvel, who use a "autostable" profile (+ 2 vertical rudders for yaw controll) but such profile is only efficient at relative low speeds (less than 300km/h) , so was mainly use on gliders (See Fauvel AV 361)...Fauvel wings was close impossible to stall because they recover alone without pilot action...

Not sure how much of it is the flex in the camera mount contributing but looking at the background that does seem like there is some nasty pitch instability going on as well.

Aircraft crashed recently killing the pilot. Condolance to all involved. Also piece of history lost. I have mixed feelings about flying rare aircraft. PS Noticed all the control movement without much response from the aircraft.

Perhaps this is where I should post my question(s) as your post answered one of my questions:
I only very recently heard of the crash and pilot's death. But,I have lost track: #1 was THIS aircraft in the video the last of the ORIGINAL prototypes? #2 part of my confusion is due to it being not that long ago I saw several magazine articles showing what was billed as the "restored" last original on a truck trailer being towed "eastward" to be put on display, never to be flown again. (Every aircraft fan within 100 miles of the route took to the road to get a first hand view, I couldn't gettime off from work...) #3 The articles mentioned that. the plane had been "test flown" without FAA permission during the restoration. Is this video one of those flights? #4 I also recall an article with the aircraft next to a recently constructed prototype duplicate that was slated for production. It had a computer to assist aircraft stability. I was questioning the FAA allowing production due to the instability of the flying wing design. The B2 uses a computer AND a military pilot, not a sportsman pilot. Yes, I did pay close attention to how the plane responded to the control. At least I had the chance to ride along, even if it was via a video. THANK YOU!

@@rogerc.roberts4705 All great questions. I can say this was one of a few original prototypes Jack Northorop made in the 1930!. This indeed was the one and only last flying M9M.
The other prototypes are gone, except one (non flying) one in the National Aerospace Museum (I think).
The N9M prototype led to the XB35 and YB49 and eventually the B2. As you said those early flying wings didn't have fly-by-wire stability control, and the jet powered YB 49 crashed. That ended the program with the Air Force, and is the reason why Edwards Air Force Base is named, after one of pilots killed in the YB 49 flight test.
The early Flying Wings had a tendency, if flown at very high angle of attacks, when it stalled, it didn't drop the nose and fly again, but it actually flipped backwards.

@@gmcjetpilot You answered my question, as I recall, there were 3 of this prototype, or six? I remember the photo of three being flown to their "final resting place" when testing was canceled, two in formation and the third chasing them as its take off had been delayed and the photo op was ruined.
I am very aware of the flying wing design becoming unstable and rolling end over end as I "have been known" to make and throw boomerangs, and have experimented with wing angle.
Not happy with only getting to see a B2 up close at the USAF museum where the "Ohio" is on display.
However, here in Central Ohio during past Octobers it was cool enough to spot the contrails of B2's flying westward toward Dayton(?) now and then.

Yes it looks like it wasn't fun to fly. At 4:29 you can see the vertical speed indicator show up and down when you wouldn't expect such variation. Also telling is the location of the indicator. It's right under the attitude indicator as opposed to under the altimeter. Making it almost a primary instrument for control of the aircraft.
